Railway Viaduct - Meudon - Hungary - Built 1938/1840
Photo taken by Andre Kertesz
In Meudon, the dissimilarity between the viaduct, the construction at its base, and the dilapidated rowhouses is as unsettling as the man furtively walking towards the viewer with a large package under his arm. Visually tying it all together is the train steaming overhead into the scene. To capture this fleeting image, Kertész relied on his new Leica, a portable camera that allowed him to act quickly when he encountered marvelous tableaus as he wandered the streets.

(Louis, surprised) Is my sister, the Imperial Princess, not attending our meeting?
(Charlemagne) No, Your Imperial Highness, she is not part of the order of succession and is therefore not able to participate.
(Henri) My nephew, let's listen to Monsieur de Maupas for the moment
(Louis, angry) Explain the situation to us then
(Charlemagne) The armoured car avoided the worst of the situation, Your Imperial Highness. Her Imperial Majesty, the Empress, suffered no physical injury. She undergoes medical tests for safety.
(Henri) And my brother the Emperor? How is he?
(Auguste) A small group of protesters were armed that evening. An investigation into them is underway. They threw several grenades at the car of the imperial couple. The police officers were killed on the spot, as well as the motorbikes accompanying the convoy. A fire started when the vehicles exploded and began to spread…
(Charlemagne, in brief) The Emperor is in a coma at the moment. He saved the Empress from the flames, but the fumes from the explosion asphyxiated him. It has reached his brain.
(Auguste) Monsieur Prime Minister!
(Charlemagne, ignore) The situation is very worrying, on several levels. The doctors believe that if His Majesty does not wake up in a few hours, then he could... die
(Henri) My God!
(Charlemagne) The laws of the Empire require that in this situation, Your Imperial Highness, you act in the name of the Emperor. We must quickly announce something to the French, everyone is waiting for news all over the world
(Louis, scared) Wait! Wait for God's sake! Where is my father hospitalized? I must see him!
(Charlemagne) His Majesty is in the Tuileries Palace, in the Imperial Apartments. It was out of the question that His Majesty should be hospitalized in town
(Louis) As long as my father's condition is uncertain, no French or person should know that the Emperor is in a coma. No word or comment on this matter in any media.

Beginning ▬ Previous ▬ Next
The imperial prince Louis and the imperial prince Henri are brought together at the château de Meudon by the Prime Minister, Charlemagne de Maupas. They are in the presence of Auguste de Morny, President of the Legislative Body, the chamber of deputies in Parliament of the Empire.
