Meiji Restoration
The Meiji Restoration was a political event that took place in Japan in 1868. In it, the Tokugawa family, a warrior clan that had ruled Japan for more than 260 years, was overthrown by a group of political activists who proclaimed that their goal was to restore the imperial family to power.
After they successfully overthrew the Tokugawa shogunate, Emperor Mutsuhito (1852-1912) adopted the reign title Meiji, which means "enlightened rule." The Meiji Restoration is almost universally regarded as the dividing line between 'traditional' and 'modern' Japan. While it did bring to power a new government that introduced radical policies that fundamentally altered Japanese society, because it was not an especially violent event in itself, there was also a great deal of continuity between pre- and post-Restoration Japan.

Japanese Hairstyles: Historical Overview Part 01
Hairstyle Name: Tate-Hyougo (立兵庫) lit. “Standing Army Warehouse”
This is a variation of the Hyougo-mage hairstyle. The style depicted is not at all similar to the other hairstyle of the same name. This variation was most likely created in the mid-Edo period in the various red-light districts. It would have been one of many stylish variation of the Genroku-era Tate-Hyougo style. In the ranks of the mid-Edo Yoshiwara, Zashikimochi and Heyamochi courtesans would have worn this hairstyle. For more information on these courtesan ranks, please read here.

Meiji Period
The Meiji period refers to the period in Japanese history from 1868 to 1912 during which the Meiji Emperor reigned. Following the overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate in the Meiji Restoration of 1868, Japan's new leaders embarked on a program of radical reform aimed at strengthening the country so it could resist the threat of European imperialism.
A new political structure modelled on those in Europe was put in place and the country rapidly industrialised. Building a modern army and navy, Japan successfully fought wars against China and Russia in 1894 and 1905, respectively. By the end of the Meiji period, Japan was not only the strongest country in East Asia but was also a world power.
