Hankies of Yore: The Pink Thread Applique

I remarked in my book that the fact that the Dress Doctors even had rules about which kind of handkerchief one used when may have been one set of rules too many, and young people snapped.

Of course, their rules were actually based on logic and usefulness. A hanky or bandana during sports is handy for wiping dirt and sweat, never mind blowing your nose. And everyday hanky would be useful for many of my students for whom I keep a box of paper tissues in my office. People sneeze, they come in from the cold, and very rarely they weep, and they have nothing but their sleeves available. One season, so many students had colds that I brought a box of tissue to class because I could not take the constant sniffling.

And then there are the very fine handkerchiefs, that are so pretty you almost don’t want to use them, and yet you love to have them in hand. Although this one is mere cotton, not silk or linen, it has hand-stitched applique where the fabric is doubled creating flowers and little leaves. The Dress Doctors would have thought it perfect for a date. Which is precisely where I am taking it tonight.
