Research - Artistic Research
Excerpts from:
What is artistic research?
JULIAN KLEIN, What is artistic research?, Gegenworte 23, Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften 2010
WHAT IS ARTISTIC RESEARCH?
Research
According to the UNESCO definition, research is "any creative systematic activity undertaken in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture and society, and the use of this knowledge to devise new applications." (OECD Glossary of Statistical Terms, 2008).
(...)
Research therefore means not-knowing, rather: not-yet-knowing and desire for knowledge (Rheinberger 1992, Dombois 2006). Research also seems to be no unique selling point of scientists, but to include many activities that have been made by artists, for example.
(...)
"Research about / for / through Art | Art about / for / through Research."
(...)
Even natural scientific research alone is very diverse in its objects, methods and products, as McAllister (2004) notes. How much more this applies to research including the humanities and social sciences, and further industrial, market or opinion research. Not surprisingly, this is also true for artistic research. Among the authors cited here, there is agreement that this diversity has to be preserved against efforts to canonical restrictions.
(...)
The principal diagnosis is, however, "research" in the singular exists not more than "science" or "art" - they all are collective plurals, assembling very different processes, which often are closer related to others over category boundaries, like disciplines, than with some other members of their own faculty, and then assemble much better under common interdisciplinary roofs, such as topics, methods or paradigms. This “urge of singularization” is probably the strongest root of the supposed and stubborn opposition between art and science: Baecker (2009) calls this the "organizing principle of the functional difference", which emerged in the 19th century according to Mersch & Ott (2007).
Art and science are not separate domains, but rather two dimensions in the common cultural space. (...) However, at least not everything, what is considered being art, has therefore to be unscientific and not everything that is regarded as science, inartistic.
Research is not only artistic, if carried out by artists (as helpful as their participation may be), but deserves the attribute “artistic”, when made under the specific quality of an artistic experience.
Artistic Experience
In the mode of aesthetic sensing perception is present to itself, opaque and sensible. Artistic experience can be determined similarly as the perception mode of sensible interfering frames (for details see Klein 2009). (...) The artistic experience as well as the aesthetic sensing are modes of our perception and, as such, constantly available, even outside of art works and art places.
In the experience the subjective perspective is constitutively included, because experience can not be delegated and only be negotiated intersubjectively in second order. This is a major reason for the conception of the singular nature of artistic knowledge (Mersch & Ott, 2007, Nevanlinna 2004, McAllister 2004, Busch 2007, Bippus 2010. Dombois 2006 points to Barthes' proposal of a "mathesis singularis" in 1980). Artistic experience is particularly dependent on and inseparable from the underlying undergoings. Artistic experience is an active, constructive and aesthetic process, in which mode and substance are fused inseparably. This differs from other implicit knowledge, which generally can be considered and described separately from its acquisition (see Dewey 1934, Polanyi 1966, Piccini and Kershaw 2003).
Artistic Research
If "art" is a mode of perception, "artistic research" must be the mode of a process. Therefore, there can be no categorical distinction between "scientific" and "artistic" research - because the attributes independently modulate a common carrier, namely, the aim for knowledge within research. Artistic research can therefore always also be scientific research (Ladd 1979). For this reason, many artistic research projects are genuinely interdisciplinary, specifically: indisciplinary (Rancière in Birrell 2008, Klein & Kolesch 2009).
Against this background the phrase "art as research” seems to be not quite accurate, because it is not the art, which evolves into research somehow. What exists, however, is research that becomes artistic - so it should be rather named "Research as Art", with the central question: When is Research Art?
In the course of a research, artistic experience can occur at different times, be of different durations and different importance. This complicates the categorization of the projects, but allows on the other hand a dynamic taxonomy: At what times, in which phases can be research artistic? First, in the methods (such as search, archive, collection, interpretation and explanation, modeling, experimentation, intervention, petition,...), but also in the motivation, inspiration, in reflection, discussion, in the formulation of research questions, in conception and composition, in the implementation, in the publication, in the evaluation, in the manner of discourse - in order only to begin the list hereby. These phases can be summarized only posthoc and categorize, for example in the usual triple of object, method and product. This sequence is important: for the discussion on artistic research is not to fall into a normative restriction in a canonical system (Lesage 2009).
At what level will the reflection of artistic research take place? In general at the level of artistic experience itself. This does not exclude neither an (subjective or intersubjective) interpretation on a descriptive level, nor a theoretical analysis and modeling on a meta- level. But: "It is a myth that reflection is only possible from the outside." (Arteaga 2010). Artistic experience is a form of reflection.
Artistic knowledge
Who are we? How do we want to live? What are things meaning? What is real? What are we able to know? When does something exist? What is time? What's a cause? What is intelligence? Where is sense? Could it all be otherwise? - These are examples of common artistic and scientific interest. Their treatment does not always lead to secure and universally valid knowledge (with regard to the history of science: only in very few cases, no?). The arts are granted the authority to formulate and address such basal and yet complex issues in their specific ways, which don’t have to be less reflected than those of philosophy or physics, being capable to gain specific knowledge that could not be delivered otherwise.
(...)
Some authors require that artistic knowledge must nevertheless be verbalized and thus be comparable to declarative knowledge (e.g. Jones 1980, 2004 AHRB). Others say it is embodied in the products of art (e.g. Langer 1957, McAllister 2004, Dombois 2006, Lesage, 2009, Bippus, 2010). But ultimately it has to be acquired through sensory and emotional perception, precisely through artistic experience, from which it can not be separated. Whether silent or verbal, declarative or procedural, implicit or explicit - in any case, artistic knowledge is sensual and physical, "embodied knowledge". The knowledge that artistic research strives for, is a felt knowledge.

1. Angelika Boeck: my understanding of artistic research
Since 1999 I have been carrying out research using the means and methods of my artistic practice. My dissertation, titled De-Colonising the Western Gaze: The Portrait as a Multi-Sensory Cultural Practice (2019), is also committed to this position. Artistic research is a broad field; it encompasses many different concepts. I prefer to use the term art practice-based research, as I consider it to be research founded on a particular art practice: firstly, on the artist’s activity in pursuit of a concrete question or a set of not yet clearly defined questions by employing artistic means and methods, and secondly, on the presentation of the process and/or outcome in the form of an artwork. The proximity to scientific strategies and practices lies in the “not-yet-knowing” (Klein 2011: 1); in the desire to show and understand; and in the fact that artists often use ethnographic, sociological, collecting/archiving or laboratory work practices; that they experiment with processes that produce images or deal with new media and technosciences (for example the Brazilian media artist and theorist Eduardo Kac, who manipulated living organisms according to aesthetic criteria as part of his Bio Art or Transgenic Art in the early 1990s). Thus, artistic research can be considered as a means of approaching human subjects (including oneself), objects and contexts (current or historical) — an examination often combined with an interest in gaining concrete experiences in an endeavour to convey these in a sensorially perceptible form (to incite reflection, amusement, disturbance or provocation). Artistic research is therefore not just a matter of analysing a given circumstance or certain emotions.
Reflection takes place during artistic production. Other forms of knowledge production (particularly in the natural sciences) require the use of approved methods, being part of a theoretical discourse and a verifiable, generalisable and comprehensible depiction of the research process. Artistic research functions differently: methodological and the theoretical aspects can often only be identified retrospectively, through a process of reverse engineering. This means that the creation process of the artistic works is examined and put in relation to the works of other artists, scientists and theorists in order to extract the components of which they are made. A written reflection of the artist (formulating the question, identifying the context and conditions, providing information on the method and theory, self-reflection) is possible, but not absolutely necessary; though I do consider it to be profitable.

Excerpt from KabK, Lectorate Art Theory and Practice. Taken from: https://www.kabk.nl/en/lectorates/art-theory-and-practice/keywords/artistic-research
Artistic research is distinguishable from other forms of academic research by the central role of artistic practice. The research question derives from the artistic practice of the artist-researcher, the research methods are characterized by the use of artistic practice and materials, and the results of the research project contribute to both artistic practice (on an individual as well as on a more general level) and to artistic academic discourse. Because artistic research is carried out by artist-researchers this produces knowledge, experiences and understanding that cannot be obtained by any other means. They are manifest in the art works and the artistic practices themselves.

Now that I’ve had the time to process and somewhat calm down from our freak out...one of the reasons I love Wisco so much is you never know who’s going to show up on the scoresheet, but you can always count on the whole team contributing. It’s always such a team effort, tonight being the prime example. Yes, they lean on guys like Cole (who came throughhhhh tonight 😍), but when Dylan was lost everyone pulled their weight. We’ve got guys like our captain Ty stepping up, getting a goal and assist. We’ve got under-appreciated guys like Mersch and Tarek contributing assists on back to back Wisco goals. We’ve got young guys stepping up like Stange, Owen had an assist, Linus is consistent. While they weren’t on the board tonight, guys like Dylan, Roman, Brock, TPB, Mike, Ty Inanoto, Ess, the list goes on are always contributing in some way, whether it’s grit, energy, D, leadership. They look so good this season bc they play as a team.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk. Happy game day!
I approve this message. There’s a lot of solid players on the team who all contribute in their own ways. They may have given us multiple heart attacks last night but they made it. Happy game day!!

EXPERIENCED LAS VEGAS ERISA ATTORNEY
At the Law office of Julie A. Mersch, in Las Vegas, we've the talent and skill to assert your employee edges rights effectively under ERISA. Our founding attorney, Julie A. Mersch, has quite a period of experience in insurance and employment law. This includes many years of with success handling ERISA cases for shoppers within the Las Vegas area and throughout Nevada. ERISA Las Vegas
Tumblr media
WHAT IS ERISA LAW?
ERISA is an descriptor for the employee Retirement financial gain Security Act of 1974. This federal statute governs the overwhelming majority of insurance claims submitted by staff with profits through their leader benefit plans. Unfortunately, few attorneys are willing to accept denied claims governed by ERISA. Why? Because success on the merits of the claim is difficult; the remedies available to claimants are limited; and an award of attorney’s fees is discretionary with the federal court (even if the attorney “wins” in court). Consequently, the people making the decisions to deny or pay claims — known as The Plan Administrator or the Claims Administrator – have little incentive to reverse a denial of benefits. (In simple terms. ERISA is meant to make sure you get the benefits you deserve and were promised by your employer. If you don't, it gives you the correct to sue.) ERISA mandates that the selected fiduciary overseeing the administration and interpretation of the arrange for edges (either the arrange Administrator or each the arrange Administrator and also the Claims Administrator) act with the utmost look after your interests, as if they were administering their own claim with their own interests at heart. Failure by the arrange Administrator to try and do therefore is unjust below ERISA.
WHAT YOU OUGHT TO DO IF YOUR CLAIM IS RULED BY ERISA
Once you recognize that you just will be making an claim through your leader profit plan, you should invite 3 documents: 1) the arrange Document 2) the outline arrange Description and 3) the shape 5500 The arrange Document is that the official written contract explaining your edges and the way to use them after you want them. The outline arrange Description (SPD) is the “user-friendly” version of the arrange Document. it's usually given to you upon rent can} be familiarly cited as an “employee handbook” or a “benefits handbook.” With most claims, the language of the arrange Document will replace the language of the SPD if there are variations in language between the two. the shape 5500 must be filed with the inner Revenue Service by the employer. it's proof that AN ERISA arrange is in effect. Since some plans are exempt from ERISA – admire governmental entities and church teams – it is vital to get the shape 5500 to make sure your arrange is ruled by ERISA. If it is not, the remedies offered to you (and so your ability to retain legal counsel if necessary) are greatly increased. you {must} requests these three documents from each the arrange Administrator and also the Claims Administrator. See [request for docs PA and request for docs CA ]
Tumblr media
WHAT YOU OUGHT TO DO IF YOUR CLAIM IS DENIED
If your claim is denied, you {must} like a shot request the 3 documents noted higher than if you haven’t already. At the tip of your denial letter, the author of the letter must advise you of your right to file an charm; the cut-off dates among that the appeal must be filed; and alternative rights afforded you below ERISA. among the past few years, the Department of Labor has created it easier for claimants to receive the documents cited or relied upon by the arrange Administrator in reaching the choice to deny a claim. you ought to immediately request those documents and they ought to be sent to you among thirty (30) days of your written request (make certain you send your letter certified mail, come receipt requested). For example, if you're disabled and your denial letter cites to an freelance medical review because the basis for the denial, you are allowed to urge the actual report by the medical reviewer. to help in your appeal, you'll be able to then take that report back to your own doctor for a written response. See [request for docs after denial ]. Note that you just cannot file suit in court unless you've got “exhausted your body remedies” first. That is, you need to complete the review method set forth within the arrange Document before you'll be able to file suit. In addition, be conscious of deadlines for filing your charm. it's vital that your appeal be submitted in time. Again, your denial letter ought to note those deadlines as can the arrange Document and SPD. though you are doing not ought to have an professional person represent you before you've got exhausted your body remedies, it should be useful to talk to an attorney for additional steerage on a way to submit a good appeal. Why? If your appeal is denied and you proceed to file suit, you may not be able to submit further data on your behalf for the court’s review. Absent special circumstances, courts won't enable the worker or the arrange Administrator to “supplement the executive Record” when suit is filed. A knowledgeable professional person will assist you in providing thorough documentation in support of your appeal.
Tumblr media
REMEDIES OFFERED UNDER ERISA If you're seeking payment of advantages --- whether or not health, disability, or life — and you prevail in federal court, the decide can order the arrange to pay benefits with interest from the time benefits ought to are paid till they're paid. The court also can fashion additional relief, reckoning on the facts of a selected case. For example, the court might award professional person’s fees to you to defer the value to you of transportation suit to redress your rights. Conversely, if you lose in federal court, the court can award attorney’s fees to the arrange Administrator. Your attorney are able to advise you at every stage of your case of your options, given your particular facts.

LONELINESS: The Ant Theory
Loneliness is a complex and usually unpleasant emotional response to isolation. Loneliness typically includes anxious feelings about a lack of connection or communication with other beings, both in the present and extending into the future. To be happy, we need intimate bonds; we need to be able to confide, we need to feel like we belong, we need to be able to get and give support. Of course, being alone and being lonely aren’t the same. Loneliness feels draining, distracting, and upsetting; desired solitude feels peaceful, creative and restorative. There are several types of loneliness. Of course, not everyone experiences loneliness in the situations described — for instance, not everyone wants a romantic partner. But for some people, the lack of certain kinds of relationships brings loneliness. Once we’ve pinpointed the particular kind of loneliness we’re experiencing, it may be easier to spot ways to address it. 7 Types of Loneliness 1. New-situation loneliness You’ve moved to a new city where you don’t know anyone, or you’ve started a new job, or you’ve started at a school full of unfamiliar faces. You’re lonely. 2. I’m-different loneliness You’re in a place that’s not unfamiliar, but you feel different from other people in an important way that makes you feel isolated. Maybe your faith is really important to you, and the people around you don’t share that — or vice versa. Maybe everyone loves doing outdoor activities, but you don’t — or vice versa. It feels hard to connect with others about the things you find important. Or maybe you’re just hit with the loneliness that hits all of us sometimes — the loneliness that’s part of the human condition. 3. No-sweetheart loneliness Even if you have lots of family and friends, you feel lonely because you don’t have the intimate attachment of a romantic partner. Or maybe you have a partner, but you don’t feel a deep connection to that person which in turn bring feeling of loneliness. 4. No-animal loneliness Many people have a deep need to connect with animals. If this describes you, you’re sustained by these relationships in a way that human relationships don’t replace. Many
people feel like something important is missing if they don’t have a dog or cat (or less conveniently, a horse) in their lives. 5. No-time-for-me loneliness Sometimes you’re surrounded by people who seem friendly enough, but they don’t want to make the jump from friendly to friends. Maybe they’re too busy with their own lives, or they have lots of friends already, so while you’d like a deeper connection, they don’t seem interested. Or maybe your existing friends have entered a new phase that means they no longer have time for the things you all used to do. For example, everyone has started working very long hours, or has started a family, so that your social scene has changed. 6. Untrustworthy-friends loneliness Sometimes, you get in a situation where you begin to doubt whether your friends are truly well-intentioned, kind, and helpful. You’re “friends” with people but don’t quite trust them. An important element of friendship is the ability to confide and trust, so if that’s missing, you may feel lonely, even if you have fun with your friends. 7. Quiet-presence loneliness Sometimes, you may feel lonely because you miss having someone else’s quiet presence. You may have an active social circle at work, or have plenty of friends and family, but you miss having someone to hang out with at home, whether that would mean living with a roommate, a family member, or a sweetheart. Just someone who’s fixing a cup of coffee in the next room, or reading on the sofa. Most of us can relate to that. Understanding Loneliness What makes us feel happy and content in life? Some people may point to fabulous fame and fortune. Yet hands down, surveys show that friends and family are the real prize. Even though our need to connect is innate, some of us are always home alone. On the flip side, a person could be surrounded by people throughout the day or even be in a lifelong marriage, yet he could still experience a deep and pervasive loneliness. Isolation affects all types and ages of people, but some are more in danger than others. Young people are at high risk of isolation. It doesn’t matter if a teenager has 500 Instagram connections, a vast network doesn’t ameliorate the emotional desolation of loneliness. Fewer and closer personal relationships are what really matter. Another age group at high risk is the very old. Research reports that more than 20 percent of people over age 60 feel lonely—frequently and intensely. As we age, friends and family age with us, and sometimes we are the last ones standing. Getting out to meet new people isn’t always easy for the very old. Yet it is imperative to connect, even a friendly exchange of smile with a neighbour can help.
Lonely Ants Die Young: They Don't Know What to Do When Alone. Socially isolated ants lose digestive functions and suffer due to this loss There are always "surprises" that cross my desk concerning the cognitive and emotional lives of nonhuman animals (animals). For example parrots dying very young when they're forced to live alone, Captive Grey Parrots Suffer from Social Isolation Loneliness. Now we know that an invertebrate, namely carpenter ants, also suffer from social isolation. In a landmark paper published in the journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociology by researchers Akiko Koto, Danielle Mersch, Brian Hollis, and Laurent Keller called "Social isolation causes mortality by disrupting energy homeostasis in ants," we learn that young ants who are forced to live alone die much younger than group-living ants. The abstract for this paper reads as follows: Social deprivation can have negative effects on the lives of social animals, including humans, yet little is known about the mechanisms by which social withdrawal affects animal health, resulted in important behavioral changes and greatly increased locomotor activity. The higher activity of single ants and their increased propensity to leave the nest to move along the walls suggested that the increased mortality of isolated ants might stem from an imbalance of energy income and expenditure. This view was supported by the finding that while isolated ants ingested the same amount of food as grouped ants, they retained food in the crop, hence preventing its use as an energy source. Moreover, the difference in life span between single and grouped individuals vanished when ants were not fed. The results show that isolated ants lived only six days, whereas group-living ants lived up to ten times as long (averaging 66 days of life). Group-living and food sharing may be important for survival This study on ants shows that social isolation and health are closely related and much more research is needed in this area. It's notable that "even ants" show a negative reaction to loneliness, as do many other species, including humans. It should also be noted that because ants show such negative responses to social isolation, they should not any longer be forced to live alone.

Peta Clancy - The importance of ambiguity, of drawing in and pushing out
Australia holds a dark history; one not known by nearly enough people. Undercurrent by Peta Clancy is a deceptively simplistic work. It is only through the reading of the image that the audience is able to find strings to tug on, and it is in this process that we are led to self-directed research; a process many unfortunately have to undertake in order to understand this country’s past, and thus present. This is a practice similar to that of Hayley Millar-Baker’s work, who intentionally leaves her works ambiguously intriguing to incite her audience to begin their own journeys of discovery.
Initially, Clancy’s images offer little information; the trees, the river could be from anywhere, the old photo used shot by anyone, the title drawing a blank. However, presented within the Bendigo Art Gallery, close to the land depicted, the trees become distinctly Australian flora. With this known, the old photograph is likely of colonial origins, its technology introduced through the invaders. The title begins to suggest something occurring beneath the surface which cannot be merely seen; the process of discovery has begun and the audience begins the research.
The land with which the two photos were taken are massacre sites, part of an era of Australian history only recently reassessed. The reflection of the land is metaphorical for a land turned upside down; by flooding, by the gold rush, by invasion. This simple photo, created through the mirrored appropriation of a colonial daguerreotype and a modern image taken by Clancy, becomes anything but. It is now heavy with untold history and implication.
Nancy Rexroth’s photograph ‘A Woman’s Bed’, begins humbly too. Initially, it is a photo of a bed; finally, it is a symbol for birth, death and the life in between.
It is through this process of reading imagery, incited by seductively ambiguous photographs, that audiences are drawn to look beyond the frame. It is a particular process of communication, presented most effectively in pensive or vague manners, as exhibited excellently within Clancy’s Undercurrent series.

Meester van Hoogstraeten - The burial and lamentation -
oil on panel, Height: 94.8 cm (37.3 in). Width: 66.2 cm (26.1 in)
Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp
The Master of Hoogstraeten (c.1475 – c.1530) is the notname given to a Flemish painter active in Antwerp in the early 16th century. He painted mainly religious paintings and is considered a member of the Antwerp Mannerists.
The identity of the Master is not known, although attempts have been made to link him with Passchier van der Mersch, a Flemish painter who was a pupil of the leading Antwerp painter Hans Memling. Because of a clear Dutch influence on his work, it has also been surmised that the Master was in fact originally from the Northern Netherlands.
The notname Master of Hoogstraeten was coined by the historian of Early Netherlandish art Max Jakob Friedländer after a set of seven panels each depicting one of the Sorrows of the Virgin that originally hung in the church of Saint Catharina in the town of Hoogstraten (now in the Antwerp province of Belgium). The panels believed to have been painted in 1505 remained in the church until the beginning of the 19th century and are now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. The Master may have been a pupil of Hans Memling himself, but his work also shows the influence of Flemish artists like Gerard David (1460 – 1523) and Hugo van der Goes (1440 – 1482). A painting of Madonna and Child with Saints Catherine and Barbara, now in the Uffizi Gallery, was once attributed to Hugo van der Goes, but is now claimed to be a work of the Master of Hoogstraeten. He is known for religious works.
The Antwerp Mannerists typically depicted religious themes, which they interpreted generally in a more superficial manner than the Flemish artists of the previous century in favour of a more fluid form and an abundance of meticulously rendered details. They also show a preference for a changing palette. Their compositions are typically shock-full with agitated figures in exotic, extravagant clothes. The compositions typically include architectural ruins. The architecture is initially Gothic but later Renaissance motifs become dominant. Many of the panels or triptychs produced by the Antwerp Mannerists depicted scenes of the Nativity of Jesus, usually situated at night, the Adoration of the Magi and the Crucifixion. The theme of the Adoration of the Magi was in particular dear to them as it allowed the artists to give free rein to their preoccupation with ornament and the simulation and imitation of luxury products.

BCE e FED valutano l'emissione di criptomoneta
Tumblr media
Come? Read the full article

Hiiiiiiiii, unfortunately my laptop decided to break on me whilst I was on holiday meaning I haven't been able to post! However, now it's finally fixed again I can share with you the many art galleries I've visited, along with illustrations I've been working on, the progress of my summer puppet project and much more! This may mean that over the next few weeks I will be posting a lot more (well of my laptop doesn't die again!) so I apologise in advance! The photographs above are from the Red Brick art exhibition in Glastonbury. Where I saw the work from Carrie Pooler, Volker Mersch and Suzy Wright. It was lovely to see such a wide variety of art and different techniques that have been used by the artists. Personally Suzy Wright's work was my favourite, I loved the incredible amount of detail that she produced in all of her pieces and how she uses multiple coloured threads to get a stunning tonal range. I recommend you pop into see the work if you're passing!
