Ohoo’s decision to offer Maury’s Bagels, pastries (scones, cookies, croissants) from Oh La La Bakery, and coffee from LA roaster, La Mill, shows a commitment to quality. The milk tea is made with premium loose leaf tea (the teas are brewed but the drinks are made to order), whole milk, and housemade furit purees. The taiyaki is made to order.
For drinks, choose from fruit tea, premium milk tea, classic milk tea, ice blended drinks, espresso drinks, and drip coffee. You can specify the sweetness level. Add-ins include brown sugar boba, popping boba, jellies, and aloe vera. No grass jelly or crystal boba. If you order a drink, you can add a taiyaki for $2 (regular price is $3).
Red bean taiyaki: served super hot, had a nice chewy mochi consistency. The red bean filling was very hot. The taiyaki had crispy edges. Felt like there wasn’t enough filling. Also, the filling has never been that hot before (when I ordered taiyaki from other places that also make the taiyaki to order)
Red bean organic assam milk tea ($6.49): The drink didn’t have much red bean and the tea flavor (assam) wasn’t strong. The red bean was at the bottom of the drink and didn’t add much flavor to the drink. The milk tea wasn’t as creamy as usual.
Seniors (65 and up) enjoy a 15% discount. The shop has limited seating and seems to attract high school kids. There are three small tables and a counter with seating.

I visited Makisupa during the soft opening. They do not roast their own coffee but they serve coffee from Colectivo Coffee. It’s laptop camping friendly but with limited tables (more seating than tables). The shop is named after a Phish song.
Score: 41/50
Food: 5/5 – They have your typical pastries (croissants, cookies, donuts, cinnamon rolls), Maury’s bagels, mini burritos, and a breakfast sandwich. The burrito was small but satisfying. The salsa is housemade.
Coffee: 4/5 – Your typical espresso drinks and cold brew. Milk options: whole milk, oat, almond. The flat white had simple foam art and was flavorful (needed a bit more foam).
Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, password in the lounge area.
Ambiance: 4/5 – Stylish Mid-Century modern seating lounge shared with the salon next door. The building itself is Mid-Century Modern. The shop also is very attractive with a wood island, wood cabinets, tile floor, and plants.
Noise: 5/5 – Mellow music, might even be Phish
Plugs: 3/5 – Spotted a couple of outlets
Parking: 5/5 – There’s parking in the back. Park in the spaces for the pilates studio (they took over the pilates studio space).
Comfort: 3/5 – Chairs aren’t padded and the tables are small
Bathroom: 4/5 – One restroom, it’s nice though
Art: 3/5 – None
Tips: Coffee beans and some merchandise are for sale.

“I’m pregnant.” Smiity’s serious tone made John blink, slow to glance up from the video he was editing to stare at his boyfriend’s form leaning against the doorway. His hands were pressed lovingly against the bottom of his stomach, which was hidden by the oversized sweatshirt John knew had been stolen from his bed. 
“Yeah?” He asked, not missing a beat when watching Smiity nod. 
“You’re the father.” 
“You can’t prove that.” He spun the computer chair to face the approaching man, grunting when Smiity eagerly crawled into his lap. Smiity flopped his legs into the hole of the armrest, his arm jabbing into John’s chest. “Hey, this chair ain’t meant to hold three.” 
“Well whose fault is that?” Smiity grinned before wiggling on John’s lap, making him scoff and pretend to shove his boyfriend off.
“The guy who knocked you up, go bitch at him.”
“I will take your ass to Maury.” 
“Good, always wanted to be famous for my penis.” The flat statement caused Smiity to burst into laughter, making John smirk. He wrapped an arm around Smiity’s waist to keep him from toppling over in laughter. “You ate all my leftover mac and cheese, didn’t you?”
“Our food baby should go to Cornell for cooking.” Was Smiity’s reply, making John groan and knock his head against his boyfriend’s arm.  
“What am I gonna have for dinner, bitch?” 
“Bagel bites are in the oven.” John’s ear was tugged without real pressure, but it got him to look up at the man grinning on his lap. “Should we name him Mack or Cheeseter?”
“God I hate you.”
But the kiss that he placed on Smiity’s lips begged to differ.

The owners of Good Luck Wine Shop in Pasadena, who happen to be Altadena residents, took over Altadena Beverage & Market a year ago. Altadena Beverage was established 1949. The new owners have created an upscale neighborhood market very similar to Wine & Eggs in Atwater Village. I think it’s better than Wine & Eggs. They carry some of the best locally produced items, things I haven’t seen in other shops.
There’s lots of beverages – wine, beer, spirits, non-alcoholic drinks; some singles, some cans, some packs. They also sell cookbooks, soaps, trays, coffee and coffee accessories, locally made ceramics, wooden spoons, greeting cards, aprons, candles, cutting boards, condiments, spices, fresh flowers, snacks, candy (including candy from France), etc. But they do not sell fresh produce. 
You’ll find pastries from Gjusta, lasagna and sauces from Gjusta, cookies from Gjusta, Bub & Grandma’s bread, and Maury’s Bagels. They also host pop-ups and I think they have sandwiches on weekends.
My picks:
4 pack of Maury’s Bagels ($9): These were softer than I expected
Gjusta biscotti ($12): Almond Orange flavor, extra crunchy but with a bit of chewiness from candied orange peel, yum
Minor complaint – a lot of items do not have prices. Park in the neighborhood. There is no seating inside but they have two benches outside. The shop is hipster cute.

52. How long could you go without talking?
I was on a pretty good three-week streak with CC there where I pretended he didn’t exist, but actually not letting sound pass my lips any time or with anyone? I actually tested that once and lasted about half a day. It was a just-because experiment and I blew it when I went to class and habitually said “sorry” to someone when we were passing something between us and I missed. Everyone else knew what I was trying to do and the whole room blew up like it was a Maury taping.
53. What has been you worst haircut/style?
I got a perm when I was 11 or 12 and I also had longish hair so I looked like a stick of broccoli. I also had dreadlocks for a few months and I didn’t entirely hate them but besides the cultural appropriation fuck-up, I got them in Summer and insisted on wearing a bandanna while at work so no amount of rosemary shampoo and Knotty Boy cooling spray stopped me from furiously scratching at myself in public.
54. Have you ever baked your own cake?
I make an apple crumble cheesecake that would satisfy you gastronomically and sexually.
55. Can you do any accents other than your own?
A very dodgy British accent (which i’m told I also did as a kid when I was just talking normally and also don’t come from England at all so figure that one out)
56. What do you like on your toast?
Avocado and goats cheese, Mayvers super nut butter (except I find chia seeds hours later), or something like this morning where I put cream cheese and sliced banana on a bagel (don’t knock it), but i’m also rediscovering the simple comforts of plain buttered toast
57. What is the last thing you drew a picture of?
A smiley face. I lack even the basic skills for doodling.

Brooklyn Bagel Bakery on Beverly Boulevard Is Finally Returning
Since early summer 2015, when Brooklyn Bagel Bakery shut down its retail operation, my family has been in somewhat of an ongoing crisis. It’s not a predicament without remedy, thankfully. We can head west to the Bagel Broker, Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co., and the Nosh of Beverly Hills, or track down goods from one of the new-wave bagel crafters who pop up around Silver Lake and Highland Park.
But when Brooklyn Bagel resumes retail sales on Beverly Boulevard near Alvarado this Friday, November 9, the general area’s bagel situation will finally feel righted again. And all those debates about bagels in L.A., and bagels in L.A. versus bagels New York, can resume and rage on indefinitely.

Brooklyn Bagel shut down when a wall collapsed in the approximately 100-year-old building on Memorial Day 2015. Its then-relatively new owner, Vanik Elchibegian, transferred wholesale operations to a commercial baking facility in Montebello, where he also runs two other companies, Breads Los Angeles and Oliver’s Artisan Breads.
The neighborhood just west of downtown wasn’t called Historic Filipinotown back in 1965 when Seymour Friedman moved his growing enterprise to Beverly Boulevard after he began rolling, boiling, baking, and selling bagels out of a West Adams spot 12 years prior. His father, Louis, had been one of the founders of the New York Beigel Bakers Union in the 1920s. Elchibegian purchased the business from Richard, Seymour’s son, in January 2015.
Now in the new retail space located in a building next door to the still-closed former Brooklyn Bagel Bakery HQ, Elchibegian has upgraded the customer experience while maintaining historical continuity and honoring the Friedmans’ legacy. He relocated the former owners’ treasure trove of beloved Dodgers images and family photographs, and he added images of the cracked beam from the bow-and-truss building that caused the wall collapse and the business’s subsequent closure.

More conspicuous is the scratched and aged hand-painted Brooklyn Bagel menu board that hangs behind the bagel case, although it functions more as an art piece and cultural document rather than menu with accurate pricing. (Bagels now cost $1.45 each, not a quarter as the first layer of the sign indicates.)
Fortunately, the wholesale component meant the city hasn’t been without Brooklyn Bagels during the three-plus years the Beverly Boulevard outpost has been out of commission. Delis including Canter’s, Factor’s, and Nate’n Al are still loyal buyers—one of the many ways Elchibegian has maintained Brooklyn Bagel Bakery’s place in the local food ecosystem. Even though Elchibegian notes that bagel making “is not similar in production at all” to other baked goods, when it comes to “taking orders, distribution… there’s a lot of similarity in the wholesale business.” (He bought the company in part because Breads Los Angeles was Brooklyn Bagel Bakery’s largest wholesale client, and he and Richard Friedman became friends over the years.)

While the product is deeply familiar to longtime fans, the shop-within-a-wholesale-bakery vibe won’t be revived, at least for now, Elchibegian says, even if the signature blade sign is still attached to the shuttered old building. Instead, the walk-in bagel shop with its dedicated on-site bakery has distinct advantages.
“As one of the baskets has been emptied, you’re going to have a fresh one go in. We’re going to be baking 24 at a time,” he notes. There will be “more bakes during the day, which keeps the freshness and quality,” he says. Varieties of three-ounce bagels will keep skewing classic, with some additional flavors, but nothing too crazy. (“Banana walnut? Why did we even have that?” Elchibegian wonders.) Wholesale baking and orders, however, will continue in Montebello as it has for the past few years.
As for what inspires Elchibegian to be a steward of sorts for this L.A. legacy brand, it’s “making something authentic and simple—that’s what makes me happy.” In a world full of industry shortcuts, Brooklyn Bagel still stands out. Elchibegian says that because of “the nature of our process here, you can’t become a big wholesaler” compared to other local companies.
Plus, Elchibegian adds, “I love the community.” For the less patient among us, Brooklyn Bagel Bakery is the type of place where you can walk in and quickly grab bagels for a crowd, which is something the current craft bagel renaissance doesn’t exactly accommodate. As for next-gen, retro-inspired newcomers with an artisanal baking bent and much lower output, such as Belle’s Bagels, Maury’s, and Yeastie Boys (which he clarifies is “more of a sandwich thing”), Elchibegian only sees an upside. “I think it’s awesome.”
“The better and more the bagels, the happier the population,” he says, laughing.

Heya, everyone. It’s me, Ezra, back at it again with my shitty writing, but this time there’s more of it. Yay! I took the prompt about a superhero AU, with Katya as the hero and Trixie as the villain, and this is part one. Enjoy!
“No! No, Brian, this just isn’t enough to file charges. I need some solid evidence, from reliable sources, if you want me to do anything about it. “
The young, yet already balding, man, slams his fist into the wooden desk. The only other man in the office, a little older than the first, smiles and makes a strange gesture with his hands: “Relax, Firkus. It’s just an article about some superheroes. Why are you so riled up? Are you getting enough sleep? “ The detective raises his eyebrows with an offended grimace on his face: “Am I getting enough sleep… NO! Of course i’m not getting enough sleep, not with this- this SHIT in the newspapers. This SHIT going on in my town. “ The detective sits down now, drumming his fingers in the table, atop of the newspaper in question. The cover is a picture of two women in colourful costumes, one running from the scene of a crime, the other chasing her. “Okay, okay, Firkus, I get it. I’ll put an officer on the case. Is that okay?” The guy behind the desk nods, smiling up at the other man: “Yeah. It’s good. Thanks. “ Brian smiles, making yet another gesture with his hands: “No problem. Do you want to get a late dinner before we start on that serial-killer case? “ They share a small smile.
“Sure, detective McCook. The bagel place on the corner? “
“You read my mind, detective Firkus. “
“So, what do we have on this case so far? Johnson and Brown had this case before us, right?“ The older of the two men, Brian, opens a file on his computer. The other Brian furrows his brow at the picture: “Is that- Alaska Thunderfuck? What happened to her? “ Brian doesn’t answer his partner, he just clicks to the next picture: “No- not Raja too- What’s going on here? Is this guy targeting our superheroes? Oh- is that Sharon Needles? And Raven. So not just the heroes then. “ Brian closes the file and looks over at his partner with a single nod: “The only thing these murders have in common are that this have been left at all the crime scenes. He pulls an evidence bag towards him and hands it to Brian. “It’s- it’s a barbie doll, McCook. You don’t think that- “ He nods, and types something on his computer, pulling up the exact picture they were discussing earlier. The one from the newspapers. “I know that Trixie Mattel has a bad rep, but she never actually killed anyone before. “ Detective McCook nods and takes the bag from Firkus. “I know that she was your childhood hero back in Milwaukee, but after she moved here she’s been more of a villain. “ Detective Firkus runs a hand through his hair.
“I know. But we can’t bring in an anonymous supervillain and question her. We can’t even find her! “
Trixie Mattel is standing on top of a building. She’s clearly waiting for someone, though had it been just a couple of years ago she would probably have been watching over her city instead. She’s still bitter about it, but that’s a matter for another night. Tonight she has got more important stuff to deal with. Like Sasha Velour, the famous comic book artist a day, one of many superheroes at night. That’s who she’s waiting for tonight. A pale woman with a bald head, a red costume to match her lips, and painted on black eyebrows. “Trixie Mattel? What are you doing here? “ Trixie turns around with a big smile on her over-painted lips: “Oh, this isn’t Maury Povich? “ Sasha furrows her painted brows: “Wait- what are you talking about, Trix? Did you leave that message on my door? How do you know where i live? “ Sasha is stepping closer with a worried look in her eyes. Trixie grins, raising her arms: “Alright, public school, calm down. By the way- how’s your boyfriend? What was it- Jaren? “ Shea’s eyes widen and she pulls away: “No- what did you do to him? “ Trixie tilts her head, still smiling, and pulls out something from one of her pockets: “Me? Nothing. Trixie Mattel, though- that’s a different story. She’s not a nice person. “
A single gunshot makes its way into the silent night, along with a loud, piercing scream.

Maury’s started as a pop-up at the Hollywood Farmer’s Market and the brick and mortar opened in March. Baker/owner Jason Maury Kaplan was inspred by his East Coast childhood and the lack of good bagels in LA. The brick building on the corner that houses Maury’s has a beautiful exterior and the interior is beautiful- high ceilings, wood accents, lots of white, and a few plants. The bagels are made there. They also had some baked goods (cookies, cake).
There were a few refrigerators with bottled beverages (including kombucha) and schmears. Bagel varieties include everything (their best seller), salt, salt & pepper, plain, sesame, za’atar, onion, poppy, garlic and jalapeno cheddar. One bagel is $1.60,1/2 a dozen $9 and a baker’s dozen $18. Schmears include plain, scallion, hot pepper, lox, strawberry and vegan cashew. Then there are various bagel sandwiches to choose from, including lox, whitefish salad, trout, egg salad, etc. You can even build your own.
* Avocado bagel sandwich ($9 closed, $14 open face): cream cheese, tomatillo, radish, red onion. I chose the jalapeno cheddar bagel. The veggies were shaved paper thin. The avocado was served in slices. There was a generous amount of cream cheese. The bagel was smaller, dense, and very chewy. I’d say that it was a bit too dense. But the bagel sandwich was simple and delicious – the tomatillo tasted pickled? There were fresh elements and creamy elements.
* Za’atar bagel: It’s like their plain bagel only they rolled it in za’atar spice. There wasn’t enough za’atar to give the bagel that much extra flavor.
Sightglass Coffee is served. While there is no indoor seating, there are a few small tables and a bench outside. The bagels are made with local flour.

All Day Baby: For the entire month of June, this Silver Lake restaurant will donate 100% of proceeds from apparel sales to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. They’ve also hosted a sidewalk bake sale, where 100% of all profits were donated to Black Lives Matter. Check their Instagram for their latest initiatives.

Eightfold Coffee: This Echo Park cafe has created a Free Internet Resource Guide with details on Black-owned coffee shops, steps to non-optical allyship, and various nationwide and local fundraisers.
Eszett: The Silver Lake spot is donating 100% of proceeds from sales of their new Blood Orange hot sauce to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. For more information, check out their Instagram.

Gather For Good: On June 19, the community organization is hosting “Pies For Justice,” an online bake sale to benefit Black Lives Matter LA and The Gathering For Justice. Big-name restaurants like n/naka, Rustic Canyon, and All Time will be baking, as will several LA independent chefs and bakers. For more information, check out their website.

Hail Mary Pizza: The Atwater Village spot donated 100% of pizza sales to Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp, and has been using their Instagram to promote Black artists, activists, publishers, and more.
