Vin + Omi to launch new eco label during LFW
Danielle Wightman-Stone
|
Wednesday, February 06 2019
Sustainable design duo Vin + Omi is teaming up with premium out-of-home media owner, Ocean to launch a new limited edition eco fashion accessories label during London Fashion Week.
The fashion label, will mark the first from a UK outdoor media owner, and will see Vin + Omi repurposing Ocean’s advertising displays to create accessories for men and women from used vinyl panels.
The collaboration is part of a long-term partnership in which all Ocean vinyls will be repurposed, turning it into a zero-waste business, with the label also helping to raise fund for its charity partner, Marine Conservation Society to help it in its efforts to fight against marine plastic pollution and protect the world’s oceans and marine life.
The contemporary accessories range will be designed with the help of students at Oxford Brookes University, added Vin + Omi, and will feature in the duo’s London Fashion Week show on February 14.
Commenting on the collaboration, Vin + Omi said in a statement: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Ocean on this project. They have taken a great innovative approach to recycling their old advertising canvases. We hope to develop this collaboration to produce a range of items made from the canvases and in return support the Marine Conservation Society from the proceeds.
“Working with us on this project are students from Oxford Brookes University. It’s great that a planet responsible company like Ocean is helping us educate a new generation in how to do the right thing.”
Ocean senior marketing executive Liliana Teixeira added: “As a 95 percent based digital media company, Ocean is actively moving away from the use of vinyl. That said, it’s important we find the best possible way to upcycle the vinyl we do still use. This partnership also allows us to support emerging creative talent which adds to its scale and impact.”
To help promote the new label, Ocean will also carry highlights from the London Fashion Week show on February 18 across The Grid network and on the Piccadilly Lights (owned by Landsec).
Vin + Omi are pioneers of eco fashion in the UK, they have previously develop recycled polyester (rPet) textiles including silk like finishes and wool which are spun from salvaged plastic primarily sourced from river and ocean clean-up projects internationally.

New York still global elite’s favorite place to buy real estate: report
New York still global elite’s favorite place to buy real estate: report
But London beat NYC for overall number of high-wealth individuals, a new Knight Frank-Douglas Elliman report shows
The Ascent of Billionaire Money (Chart via Knight Frank’s The Wealth Report)
The New York market may have cooled in 2018, but the city is still appears to be the most popular place in the world for prime property investment.
New York is the world’s leading city for both residential and commercial investment, cementing its position as a global wealth hub, according to Knight Frank and Douglas Elliman’s 2019 wealth report. The study, which surveys global trends among the highest-wealth individuals, looked at property investments of $10 million or more.
It wasn’t all good news for New York, however. The city fell to second place on the overall wealth ranking, beaten by London because of two metrics: the number of high net-worth individuals and lifestyle, which refers a city’s security and affordability.
New York’s relegation to second place may have been due to “stock market volatility and a strong U.S. dollar, which led some foreign buyers to sit on their hands during 2018,” the report said, and could have been compounded by “the underlying structural issue of oversupply.”
While London beat New York for most resident high net-worth individuals, defined as those with over $30 million, New York still has the most billionaires, with 94 resident in the city. New York also saw the highest rate of new high-net worth individuals, adding 55,434 in 2018 alone.
At a launch for the new report held at JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group’s new luxury condo tower 111 57th Street, Howard Lorber, CEO of Douglas Elliman, acknowledged that 2018 had been a tough year for the firm in New York City.
“Our business was probably down about 15 percent,” Lorber said. “About half of that was velocity, meaning sales. And about half of that was pricing.”
But he said he didn’t the market bottomed out yet, at least not “until the prices come down, and the inventory is bought up.”
Prices will stay static in New York over the next year, the report predicted.
But Susan De Franca, president of Douglas Elliman Development Marketing, said that the wealthy demographic surveyed in the report were less affected by market fluctuations than other buyers. She pointed to high-profile sales like Ken Griffin’s $238 million penthouse at 220 Central Park South, and big deals at 432 Park Avenue.
“The real high-profile properties that have very limited inventory — those super ultra high wealth individuals are still looking at them at a very significant asset class,” De Franca said.
While New York’s results were mixed, there was good news for Los Angeles and Miami, where the report predicted investment by high net-worth individuals would grow by 2 percent and 5 percent respectively in the coming year.
“Florida’s low tax status may spur some U.S. residents to move to the sunshine state in the wake of the new State and Local tax (SALT) deductions,” the report said.
Globally, however, wealth growth is slowing, especially in the U.S. where it is now at 3 percent, down from 10 percent in 2017. Despite an overall cooling, Asia is leading wealth growth, with the report predicting India will see 39 percent growth in the next five years, followed by the Philippines with 38 percent and China with 35 percent.

All The Other Props and Some Judges: Should We Kill Daylight Savings Time in California?
In the final statewide installment of our 2018 L.A. Taco Voter Guide, we run down the rest of the propositions on the general ballot in California. We’ll also discuss a few key Superior Court judgeships for Los Angeles County.
Remaining Propositions
Proposition 3: Water Projects in the Central Valley
Both the L.A. Times and DSA LA have flagged this proposition as being a huge break for large agriculture companies in the Central Valley, and suggest a no vote. The Central Valley is where a lot of our agriculture comes from, so who should pay for the direly needed projects to sustain growth there. Water is going to become a greater political and economic issue in the coming years, and any proposition that addresses that is worth consideration. Read more here.
Proposition 4: Giving Children’s Hospitals Millions in Funding for Construction
No one is opposing this initiative that would give $1.08 billion to non-profit children’s hospitals. Though DSA LA points out, there are some problems with the prop. Read more here.
Proposition 5: Giving the Rich Another Tax Break
This ballot measure is aimed at taking money from schools and cities so that rich homeowners can transfer to new homes and keep their old, cheaper property taxes. It’s a boondoggle that would only benefit the rich and real estate companies. Read more here.
Proposition 7: Should We End Daylights Savings?
This would allow the state to control Daylights Savings for … Why? What? Who cares? Ending Daylight Savings in California would still require federal approval. Why do we have Daylight Savings Time anyway? Read more here.
Proposition 11: Giving Ambulance Workers Paid Breaks
A 2016 California Supreme Court ruling that applied to security guards and a fear of pending lawsuits launched this initiative. In the ruling, the court said guards did not have to be on call during a break. As a result, private ambulance companies are scared of a similar ruling locking them out of the current status quo, where their private EMTs get paid for their breaks but are required to be on call. It’s similar to cops, firemen, nurses, and doctors. If an emergency call comes in, they have to roll. The fact that private companies bankrolled a ballot initiative to prevent a class action lawsuit is shady. But then ask yourself if you want to be in an emergency when everyone is out to lunch? The idea that companies should hire more workers to fill those gaps is great. But is there really a minimum amount of emergency workers that would be enough? Emergencies by their very nature are unpredictable. It’s definitely a complicated issues that requires some thought. A “Yes” vote would keep the status quo. A “No” vote would essentially end it. Read more here.
Proposition 12: Animal in Cages
This one bans the sale of meat and eggs from animals who are confined in small cages. Read more here.
Local Judges
Superior Court 4: Veronica Sauceda
Veronica Sauceda is has a ton of experience as a public interest lawyer. She grew up in Southeast Los Angeles, is the daughter of Mexican immigrants, and represented low-income people for free for thirteen years. Her opponents are career prosecutors with lower ratings from the County Bar Association. Read more here.
Superior Court 16: Patricia Hunter
Patti Hunter is a prosecutor with 28 years of experience putting away criminals, her opponent has a record of defending wealthy, blue-collar criminals and her husband is president of the California Rifle and Pistol Association. Read more here.
Superior Court 60: Holly Hancock
Holly Hancock is another lawyer who has dedicated her career to defending poor people in court. She is a career public defender who is a vocal critic of the cash bail system. Read more here.
Superior Court 113: Javier Perez
Javier Perez has 11 endorsements from fellow judges, and his opponent faces ethical questions that a candidate shouldn’t really face, especially going into a seat on the court. Read more here.
Reporter Sam Ribakoff contributed to this report.

Beautiful bobcat photographed in El Sereno’s Ascot Hills Park
El Sereno  — Earlier this year we wrote about bobcat sightings at Ascot Hills Park. Today we can share a photo of a bobcat that was taken last week by Pedro Ramirez, a bird walk leader with the Audubon Center of Debs Park.
The bobcat was photographed near the northern stretch of a seasonal creek that runs down the center of the park, about 20 feet away from a trail, said Jamie Chen, a landscape architect with Northeast Trees, which is restoring habitat in the approximately 93-acre park.
In an interview earlier this year, Miguel Ordeñana, an urban wildlife expert at the Natural History Museum, said the Los Angeles is the perfect area for bobcats because of all the available food resources and wide range of mobility.
“People shouldn’t fear the bobcats since they’re mostly hunting for smaller prey and hide during the day away from people,” he said.
Ascot Hills Park is currently denuded, under utilized, overrun by weeds, and prone to erosion, said Chen. Her group’s habitat restoration — which includes tree plantings, swales to collect stormwater —  will help restore the native flora of the park and also attract native fauna.
“We are excited by the evidence that our habitat restoration project has encouraged the bobcat to stay,” Chen said in an email.

Kris & Kylie Jenner show off their designer-done digs
Since it’s the weekend, the cat’s away and the mice (Yolanda) want to play. So how about something a wee bit offbeat? Don’t fret, our regularly scheduled programming will return shortly.
We know many of our snootier readers dislike the Kardashians and deride them as being famous (and famously rich) for absolutely nothing. “No talent!!!” they scream. But Yolanda finds these people oddly fascinating. Just how have they captivated the world for so many years? Folks have been predicting the demise of their “15 minutes” for well over a decade, yet here they are — still hogging space on every website from Time Magazine to TMZ. Come on — that alone is a talent! This family is here to stay.
At this point, the Kardashians are wealthier than 90% of “A-list” celebrities, and their famously brash spending — seems like they can never buy enough mansions, exotic cars and rapper/baller baby daddies — has recently kicked into ultra-high gear. The family now presides over a real estate empire worth well in excess of $100 million, according to Yolanda’s research.
Two of the clan’s biggest spenders — Kris Jenner and her 21-year-old near-billionaire daughter Kylie Jenner — have both purchased new homes out in Hidden Hills, deep in the belly of the San Fernando Valley, and the fine folks at Architecural Digest recently got a firsthand tour of the designer-redone digs.
So while Yolanda knows certain folks would rather push a camel through a needle’s eye than read about this family, Yolanda is gonna write about them. Let’s begin with Little Miss Kylie Jenner, shall we?
Back in fall 2016, a then-19-year-old Miss Jenner paid $12,050,000 for a new monster mansion.
We wrote about the 13,200-square-foot beast when she bought it and described the spec-built home as “very fancy but slightly banal” in style. “Couldn’t Miss Jenner go for something a bit sexier?” Yolanda wrote. And it’s true. The neutral interiors, while luxurious and wholly inoffensive, verged on the matronly.
Tumblr media
Back in the day (2016)
But that was then, and the house looks dramatically different now. To sex up the Cape Cod-style abode, Miss Jenner engaged the services of theatrical interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard and spent many months workin’ on a hideously expensive total redo of the place.
Well, the now-21-year-old lip kit queen’s castle is finally done, and it’s insane. The enormous structure is chock-full of name brand art and custom furniture — Yolanda can pretty much guarantee that Miss Jenner spent well into the seven figures on this job. Check out the full story on Architectural Digest .
Yowza! Even if this ain’t your style — and it certainly is not Yolanda’s style — it’s sure fun to look at. The place looks “perfect for Instagram,” as one of our friends told us. And really, ain’t that the whole point?
At least one of the home’s eight bedrooms was converted into a “glam room” and a purse closet to house Miss Jenner’s million-dollar handbag collection. And the art used as decor! Oh my. It’s all great stuff — Beau Dunn‘s condom art, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Basquiat (but does Kylie Jenner even know who Basquiat is? Apparently she does!)
Tumblr media
The million-dollar purse closet
We can pretty much guarantee you will never, ever see another 21-year-old with a home this ludicrous. But before we digress any further, let’s check out her mama’s new pad, which is similarly expensive but done up in a much different, more demure manner.
In late 2017, Kris Jenner ponied up nearly $10 million for a spec-built mansion elsewhere in Hidden Hills (it happens to be directly across the street from the much larger home of her daughter Kim Kardashian and son-in-law Kanye West).
Ms. Jenner still owns her old Hidden Hills house — the Mediterranean-style one made famous on Keeping Up With the Kardashians — though she only uses it for filming purposes these days. And maybe to house some of her assistants/glam squad, we dunno.
Anywho, Ms. Jenner is learning about art and architecture — for which we applaud her — and wanted a more sophisticated look in her new home. For that she hired the acclaimed Waldo Fernandez and Clements Design to imbue the property with a “calming” energy.
Yolanda confesses we absolutely love this place — we’d live there in a heartbeat, and the art, furniture and materials are all top-notch and very correct. The one (slight) criticism to be made is that everything feels a tad too impersonal. Kinda like a giant hotel suite. A beautiful five-star hotel suite, to be sure.
Watch the video and tell us if we’re wrong. Does anything in the house — other than her “proud of” sheep — have any real meaning to Ms. Jenner? It sure ain’t seem that way, but what do we know?
For more delicious pictures of the new Kris Jenner estate, check out the Architectural Digest story in full.
So there’s the properties. See y’all, that wasn’t so bad. But you haven’t heard the last from Kardashian real estate, not by a long shot. Within the past few months, Kris Jenner dropped another $12 million out in La Quinta’s exclusive Madison Club community, and Kylie Jenner just copped a $13.5 million “in-town” pad in the mountains above Beverly Hills. So we fully expect those places to be redone and eventually skip their way into a future Architectural Digest issue.
And just for kicks and giggles, check out Kourtney Kardashian’s Richard Landry-designed Calabasas mansion, also decorated by Martyn Lawrence Bullard — and also featured in Architectural Digest.
See kids, we’ve discovered the Kardashians’ talent — their knack for amassing and spending loads of money. Thankfully, they mostly invest in real estate, which helps keep Yolanda in the black.

People on bikes and on foot will have their own path between Silver Lake and Atwater Village
Construction kicked off Monday on a pedestrian bridge that will span the Los Angeles River and connect cyclists and pedestrians moving between Silver Lake and Atwater Village.
The new 430-foot-long bridge will use piers that were left behind by the Pacific Electric “Red Car” trolleys.
“This new amenity has been sixteen years in the making,” Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, who represents the area, said in a statement. “My number-one transportation priority is pedestrian safety, and this project will allow more people to safely cross the Los Angeles River.”
Part of the project involves relocating a mural depicting the Red Car trolleys by Raphael Escamilla. The city’s cultural affairs department will help find a new home for the artwork.
The new bridge is expected to be complete in a year.
Tumblr media
A rendering of the bridge as seen from the 5 Freeway offramp at Glendale Boulevard.
Via the Bureau of Engineering
The completed pedestrian bridge will be “critical” during the retrofit and restoration of the Glendale-Hyperion complex of bridges, said O’Farrell. The bridge complex opened in 1928 and is awaiting a major seismic retrofit.
The pedestrian bridge will make it possible for people on bikes and on foot to cross the river safely during the three years it’s expected to take to upgrade the Glendale-Hyperion bridge complex.
But the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council would like to see the crossing be a little bit safer. The council has launched a letter-writing campaign aimed at convincing city leaders to include a pedestrian underpass on the east bank of the river under the Glendale-Hyperion bridge complex.
Putting a pedestrian and bike underpass there would create a “loop” connecting amenities on the west side of the river—the riverside bike path and the Sunnynook River Park— an existing pedestrian bridge on the north side of the Glendale-Hyperion bridge, and the forthcoming Red Car pedestrian bridge on the east side.
Tumblr media
An image from a 2008 study for the Sunnynook River Park. The Atwater Village Neighborhood Council wants to build an underpass on the east side of the river, under what the map calls the Glendale/Hyperion viaduct. The Sunnynook Pedestrian bridge exists now. The new Red Car Pedestrian Bridge is represented by the yellow dotted lines over the river on the southeast side of the bridge.
Via Bureau of Engineering
In the form letter it’s using for its campaign, the neighborhood council argues that eight-lane-wide Glendale-Hyperion bridge complex is “unsafe to cross [on a bike or on foot], even if there’s a future crosswalk close by.” The addition of an underpass is vital and necessary for safety and connectivity, “top among the city’s stated goals for river revitalization,” it says.
The letter contends that because the retrofit of the Glendale-Hyperion bridge is still a ways off, there’s still time to add the underpass to the plan, but the window of opportunity is closing.
“For the city, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create this fiscally prudent and socially responsible continuous river path,” the letter says.
Finding funding for the project is an issue, though the neighborhood council has reached out to a number of state and county sources about possible funding for studies needed before the underpass can officially be added to the project.
Another issue for the underpass would be the timing of the project. With the renovation on the Glendale-Hyperion complex scheduled to begin in the summer of 2020, adding the underpass would have to happen quickly.

Brooklyn Bagel Bakery on Beverly Boulevard Is Finally Returning
Since early summer 2015, when Brooklyn Bagel Bakery shut down its retail operation, my family has been in somewhat of an ongoing crisis. It’s not a predicament without remedy, thankfully. We can head west to the Bagel Broker, Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co., and the Nosh of Beverly Hills, or track down goods from one of the new-wave bagel crafters who pop up around Silver Lake and Highland Park.
But when Brooklyn Bagel resumes retail sales on Beverly Boulevard near Alvarado this Friday, November 9, the general area’s bagel situation will finally feel righted again. And all those debates about bagels in L.A., and bagels in L.A. versus bagels New York, can resume and rage on indefinitely.
Jessica Ritz
Brooklyn Bagel shut down when a wall collapsed in the approximately 100-year-old building on Memorial Day 2015. Its then-relatively new owner, Vanik Elchibegian, transferred wholesale operations to a commercial baking facility in Montebello, where he also runs two other companies, Breads Los Angeles and Oliver’s Artisan Breads.
The neighborhood just west of downtown wasn’t called Historic Filipinotown back in 1965 when Seymour Friedman moved his growing enterprise to Beverly Boulevard after he began rolling, boiling, baking, and selling bagels out of a West Adams spot 12 years prior. His father, Louis, had been one of the founders of the New York Beigel Bakers Union in the 1920s. Elchibegian purchased the business from Richard, Seymour’s son, in January 2015.
Now in the new retail space located in a building next door to the still-closed former Brooklyn Bagel Bakery HQ, Elchibegian has upgraded the customer experience while maintaining historical continuity and honoring the Friedmans’ legacy. He relocated the former owners’ treasure trove of beloved Dodgers images and family photographs, and he added images of the cracked beam from the bow-and-truss building that caused the wall collapse and the business’s subsequent closure.
Jessica Ritz
More conspicuous is the scratched and aged hand-painted Brooklyn Bagel menu board that hangs behind the bagel case, although it functions more as an art piece and cultural document rather than menu with accurate pricing. (Bagels now cost $1.45 each, not a quarter as the first layer of the sign indicates.)
Fortunately, the wholesale component meant the city hasn’t been without Brooklyn Bagels during the three-plus years the Beverly Boulevard outpost has been out of commission. Delis including Canter’s, Factor’s, and Nate’n Al are still loyal buyers—one of the many ways Elchibegian has maintained Brooklyn Bagel Bakery’s place in the local food ecosystem. Even though Elchibegian notes that bagel making “is not similar in production at all” to other baked goods, when it comes to “taking orders, distribution… there’s a lot of similarity in the wholesale business.” (He bought the company in part because Breads Los Angeles was Brooklyn Bagel Bakery’s largest wholesale client, and he and Richard Friedman became friends over the years.)
Jessica Ritz
While the product is deeply familiar to longtime fans, the shop-within-a-wholesale-bakery vibe won’t be revived, at least for now, Elchibegian says, even if the signature blade sign is still attached to the shuttered old building. Instead, the walk-in bagel shop with its dedicated on-site bakery has distinct advantages.
“As one of the baskets has been emptied, you’re going to have a fresh one go in. We’re going to be baking 24 at a time,” he notes. There will be “more bakes during the day, which keeps the freshness and quality,” he says. Varieties of three-ounce bagels will keep skewing classic, with some additional flavors, but nothing too crazy. (“Banana walnut? Why did we even have that?” Elchibegian wonders.) Wholesale baking and orders, however, will continue in Montebello as it has for the past few years.
As for what inspires Elchibegian to be a steward of sorts for this L.A. legacy brand, it’s “making something authentic and simple—that’s what makes me happy.” In a world full of industry shortcuts, Brooklyn Bagel still stands out. Elchibegian says that because of “the nature of our process here, you can’t become a big wholesaler” compared to other local companies.
Plus, Elchibegian adds, “I love the community.” For the less patient among us, Brooklyn Bagel Bakery is the type of place where you can walk in and quickly grab bagels for a crowd, which is something the current craft bagel renaissance doesn’t exactly accommodate. As for next-gen, retro-inspired newcomers with an artisanal baking bent and much lower output, such as Belle’s Bagels, Maury’s, and Yeastie Boys (which he clarifies is “more of a sandwich thing”), Elchibegian only sees an upside. “I think it’s awesome.”
“The better and more the bagels, the happier the population,” he says, laughing.
Amen.

Report: Lakers trade for Reggie Bullock
The Los Angeles Lakers have been active as we approach the trade deadline. The team has tried all they can to get their hands on Anthony Davis, to no avail.
Now, it appears the LA front office is focused elsewhere.
According to a report from Shams Charania, the Lakers are trading end-of-rotation player Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk to the Detroit Pistons for Reggie Bullock.
Via Twitter:
LA is also reportedly sending a second round pick to the Pistons in the deal.
Bullock could help add some 3-point shooting to this Lakers squad. He’s shooting 38 percent from range this year, which has helped Bullock average a career-high 12 points per game.

Bucking trend, Paragon Commercial to invest $500M in “neighborhood shopping centers”
Bucking trend, Paragon Commercial to invest $500M in “neighborhood shopping centers”
The El Segundo firm is dedicating $200M to SoCal retail properties alone
Paragon’s Co-Founder Jim Dillavou and a photo of one of their retail plazas
As mall operators and retailers across the country struggle with sales, one local firm is going all in.
El Segundo-based Paragon Commercial Group will invest $500 million over the next 18 months in retail property acquisitions, the company announced in a release Tuesday.
Jim Dillavou, Paragon co-founder and principal, said the firm will focus on “neighborhood shopping centers” that typically have a grocery market. Each acquisition will range from $20 million to $80 million.
The retail development firm will invest alongside some of its existing partners, both institutional and private.
Out of the $500 million, about $200 million will be invested in Southern California properties while the remainder will go to Northern California properties. Dillavou said the firm has been looking to grow its portfolio in the northern half of the state.
Paragon’s portfolio includes a 79,400-square-foot retail property in Orange County, purchased through the Canyon Catalyst Fund, and Gelson’s Shopping Plaza in Manhattan Beach. The firm completed construction at the South Bay retail center last November, landing the high-end grocery chain Gelson’s to anchor the project.
In the Bay Area, the firm recently made headlines for selling the ground lease to an In-N-Out Burger located in San Jose. A private investor bought that property for $6.9 million.
While Paragon will invest in smaller shopping centers, landlords of large malls nationwide have dealt with big-box spaces going vacant after retail chain bankruptcies. In response, some mall owners have been redeveloping those empty spaces into residential developments, sprawling “country club”-like fitness centers, medical facilities and co-working spaces.

After designing a bridal gown for a royal wedding, Stella McCartney has decided to launch a full collection of bridal. Meghan Markle debuted the British designer’s first foray into bridal design in her second look at her wedding in May, and the simple yet stunning ivory silk crepe, high-necked and open-backed gown was well received by critics and spectators alike.
Stella McCartney has now unveiled her first bridal collection, which she calls “Made With Love.” While the new Duchess of Sussex had provided a lot of widespread marketing hype to McCartney’s bridal design, the McCartney wants it to be clear that her bridal collection is “not just for one type of bride.” She told Vogue, “It was important to me to embody the core values of our house, so the collection has elements of sustainability as well. It truly reflects different ages, and I think so many different women come to us, so I really wanted to reflect that in the bridal offering. It is not just for one type of bride; it is truly made with love.”
True to McCartney’s sustainable motives, the pieces in “Made With Love” are mainly made from viscose, a traceable fabric sourced from certified forests in Sweden, along with lace and chiffon.
The collection is comprised of 17 pieces, including a feminine tuxedo, a jumpsuit, and gown options with both long sleeves and sleeveless designs. Each versatile style allows a level of personality for today’s modern bride. And there’s an added bonus for fans of Meghan Markle’s wedding dress: McCartney’s offering includes a style almost identical to Markle’s dress.

Fed rate may surpass 3% in 2019: Federal Reserve’s Karen Gilmore
Fed rate may surpass 3% in 2019: Federal Reserve’s Karen Gilmore
Higher rate expected to push up cost of borrowing -- but only one to two hikes expected this year, she confirmed at a CREW-Miami luncheon

In 2019, the benchmark federal funds rate could crack the 3 percent mark for the first time in more than a decade, according to the Federal Reserve’s top official in Miami.
During a luncheon this week hosted by CREW-Miami, Karen Gilmore, vice president and regional executive at the Miami branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, said the regulatory body is anticipating two hikes this year that could bump up the rate to 3.25 percent. The rate is currently between 2.25 percent and 2.5 percent. A higher fed rate is expected to push up the cost of borrowing for commercial and residential loans.
Gilmore told attendees at the Four Seasons Hotel Miami that the Federal Reserve has dialed back its projected rate hikes for 2019, confirming earlier reports that there will only be two increases this year instead of three. In 2018, the Federal Reserve raised rates four times.
“The federal policy makers [have indicated] there will be one to two adjustments,” Gilmore said. “In September, they were much more aggressive about what would happen in 2019. They have pulled back the pace of the interest rate changes in the coming year.”
While the economy and the labor market finished strong in 2018, there are signs the record growth is slowing down, Gilmore said. The last time interest rates went over 3 percent was in 2005, three years before the global financial collapse and subsequent recession.
Gilmore said the economy and job growth are still tracking upward, but certain employment trends could slow things down. “We are not going into a recession,” she said. “However, a hot labor market can have other ramifications.”
The historically low unemployment rate can lead employers to be forced to raise salaries and wages to attract qualified workers. Those business costs are absorbed by raising prices for goods and services, Gilmore explained. In turn, consumers could end up spending less money, she added.
Another area of concern is that the Republican-led tax cut plan has not led to more spending by businesses that benefited from it, she said. Proponents expected tax cuts would entice companies to invest in new capital such as buying new equipment or building new warehouses, Gilmore said. “But businesses have not been strong investors in their businesses,” she said. “A lot of the tax savings went to stock buybacks and dividends.”
The trend will continue in 2019, she added. Moreover, the Trump tariffs and trade war has dampened economic enthusiasm generated by the president’s tax cut plan. “It put the brakes on all the positive sentiment created by the tax cuts,” she said.
There has also been a pull back on home buying, Gilmore said, with consumers questioning if they should be making long-term investments when interest rates are rising.
Lyan Fernandez, CEO of Attica Consulting Group and a past Crew-Miami chapter president, said Gilmore’s outlook lines up with what the real estate industry is expecting the Federal Reserve to do in 2019. “There was no reason to accelerate raising rates,” Fernandez said. “What she said underlies what everyone in the real estate community already knows: we are on the downside of the cycle.”

Area Has First of Its Kind Day to Connect Homeless with Services
Locals and officials from California Assemblymember Laura Friedman’s and Los Angeles City Councilmember David Ryu’s offices gather near a table of donated clothing in October for the area’s first Homeless Connect Day. Photo: Blake Dellinger.
GRIFFITH PARK—Local, state and county officials gathered at Friendship Auditorium in October with non-profit and other service providers for the first of its kind local “Homeless Connect Day.”
Former San Francisco Mayor and current gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom created the first such day in 2004, which has since grown to be a national movement to “connect” homeless persons with services in their communities.
According to those involved in the local October 9th event, about 100 people attended and were able to receive immunizations, identification cards from the Dept. of Motor Vehicles, legal advice and more.
California State Assemblymember Laura Friedman was one of many officials that participated.
“Folks come to have a shower. They can have a haircut. They can have food. They can get clothing and handbags—everything that they need to help them,” she said. “Most importantly, they can talk to a whole range of service providers who can give them information about how they can find transitional housing or help with job training—all the tools that they need to get off the streets.”
Also on hand was Josh Hertz of the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council (AVNC) who said such days are important, as services for the homeless often fall through the cracks due to bureaucratic red tape.
According to Hertz, Atwater Village’s homeless population often gets left behind regarding county services because the community unfortunately straddles two county service regions and the closest provider is not funded to serve in the area.
“Connect Day helps fill that gap,” said Hertz. “It allows our homeless stakeholders to receive the services they need all in one spot. It’s a good thing to have.”
While the local event was the first Homeless Connect Day in the area, it likely won’t be the last.
“This is a massive crisis and it’s all hands on deck,” said Friedman.
Also on hand for the event was the local neighborhood homeless coalition, called SELAH—an acronym for Silver Lake, Echo Park, Los Feliz, Atwater Village and Hollywood; representatives from the Los Feliz and Silver Lake neighborhood councils and Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl.
The AVNC also donated $1,500 for food from Palette Food and Juice, located on Glendale Boulevard in Atwater Village, and provided attendees transportation to the Saban Community Clinic for vision tests and blood work.
According to the most recent homeless count, conducted in January 2018, Los Angeles County currently has over 53,000 homeless people in the county, including 31,000 in the city of Los Angeles alone.

Inside the Nation: Previewing day two of the NHL Draft and a Broberg breakdown
With day one of the NHL Draft in the books and rounds 2-7 still to come, Dusty Nielson is back with another episode of Inside the Nation to break it all down. In today’s episode, Dusty breaks down the Philip Broberg selection from last night, including where he fits on the prospect depth chart, and previews day two with a list of players the Oilers might be interested in with their second round pick.
To kick off today’s edition of Inside the Nation, Dusty starts off with a look at the Philip Broberg pick that kicked a hornet’s nest and whether or not the reaction was justified. For as angry as some folks were, Broberg is a legitimate prospect that may take some time to get up and running but does have the potential to be a real difference maker if he can put it all together. From there, we turn to the second round of the draft and look at which forwards might still be available when the Oilers step up for pick #38. With Broberg taken last night, you’d have to think a forward will be next up, right? We shall see. Lastly, Dusty takes a walk through the rumour mill to see any of the chatter surrounding the Oilers will actually turn into a trade. From what he’s been told, Jesse Puljujarvi will either be traded today or not at all so that will be a storyline to follow all day as we move through day two of the NHL Draft.

Orange County May Not Know Elections Results for Weeks
Some analysts have called Orange County ground zero for whether there will be Democratic control of Congress but we won't know for sure who wins some races for days, maybe even weeks.
The head of the elections office in Orange County says they have been gearing up since the spring when they knew they were going to have some competitive Congressional races. A typical midterm election has some 5,000 to 6,000 people working at polling places or in the counting room. On Tuesday, there will be an extra 2,000 to 3,000 people working the polls.
"I have never seen a midterm like this," said Neal Kelley, the Orange County Registrar. "Early, in-person voting is 130 percent ahead of where we were in 2016. That's really kind of the indicator for tomorrow where we can have strong turnout."
Races could have huge national implications. Some 80,000 people have registered in the last 30 days. But even with more resources and workers added, election officials say prepare for results to take awhile.
"I would estimate it's going to take us about three and a half weeks to get the full count complete," he said.
Here's why -- 65 percent of voters in the county use mail-in ballots. Unlike before, Kelley says, many are waiting to drop them off on Election Day.
"If you think about it, it will take us another 10 days roughly to process that many ballots."
Then there are the provisional ballots for voters who are not on the rolls or have some other issue. Also, for the first time in the county, there is same-day registration. People can walk in and do it all at once.
Voters also are allowed to make corrections and if a signature doesn't match the one at registration voters now have up until Dec. 1 to make corrections.

Neiman Marcus iLabs exec no longer believes in internal teams
The founder of the Neiman Marcus iLab contends retailers are hindering innovation - a surprising theory from a retail executive who six years ago had helped develop an innovative program to use technology to improve the consumer experience.
With this background and strong stance on the state of the retail industry, Scott Emmons has joined TheCurrent Global as CTO "to bring insights and expertise to global retail brands," a company press release states.
During his 13-year tenure with Neiman Marcus, Emmons helped the retailer to exist on the forefront of innovation, through consumer-facing technological introductions such as a memory mirror, 4K touch table lookbooks, intelligent mobile phone charging stations and smart fitting room technology.
Despite his success in advancing Neiman Marcus' stance in the industry, Emmons now believes that internal teams are unable to produce the necessary results to drive the industry forward. Following this belief, Emmons is now part of a retail consultancy firm.
TheCurrent Global was founded in 2017 by Liz Bacelar and Rachel Arthur with the mission to transform how consumer retail brands use technology to advance. Despite its youth, the firm has worked with a client list that includes the British Fashion Council, LVMH, Gucci and Burberry.
The consultancy firm uses its teams combined experiences from founding Neiman Marcus iLabs to creating Decoded Fashion, as per Bacelar's background, to deliver tools for integration and experiences to global retailers.
TheCurrent Global believes that the retail industry is entering a new era of innovation. move marks a new era for retail innovation. It sees increased competition, and a growth of companies embracing risk, as a cue that the industry is in need for experimentation.
“Corporate innovation programs seem to start strong and sharp, but over time, they are devoured and diminished by surrounding day-to-day business processes, making it nearly impossible to maintain momentum," Emmons said at New York's NRF Big Show. "It’s time for that to change. For fashion and retail brands to succeed, they need to shift from an internally driven culture to one focused on open innovation with the world’s top technology and talent."
Liz Bacelar, CEO of TheCurrent Global, added in a statement, “Real innovation can only happen today by tackling problems in a new way. We all know it is insanity to expect different results using the same approaches. With the help of outside experts, businesses can achieve growth in a new way, with both speed and efficiency."
