No. 1 Cal Sweeps No. 9 Stanford At Big Row

Cal Retains Schwabacher Cup

REDWOOD CITY – The No. 1 California men's rowing team had a successful outing at the Big Row against No. 9 Stanford, taking both the varsity and second varsity eight races at Redwood Shores on Saturday and retaining the Schwabacher Cup. The Golden Bears have now won nine straight matchups against the Cardinal and extended their series lead to 70-19. Both crews remain undefeated this season heading into the Pac-12 Championships in two weeks. In the varsity eight race, Cal was able to build an open-water lead of about two seats by the 1,000-meter mark. Stanford was able to keep the distance over the next 500 meters, before the Bears made a push to extend their lead to a few seats of open water to win by five seconds in a time of 5:31.7. In the second varsity eight race, the Bears got off to a great start and built a three-seat lead in the opening 500 meters before extending it to open water by the halfway mark. Cal continued to extend its lead through the sprint and won in convincing fashion, almost 25 seconds ahead of the Cardinal, with a time of 5:41.2. "I thought both crews raced really well," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "I wanted today to be an internal, positive-momentum-building kind of race and I think there was that for both crews. The second varsity got off to a really good start and got out early and just extended the lead through the rest of the race course, so I was pleased with how they performed. The varsity had a really good race. Stanford stuck with them through the middle, but we were able to win by a second or so of open water. So good results and execution of the race for the guys. Lately I've been actively trying to read more older sci-fi, especially written by women. I found CJ Cherryh and Vonda N McIntyre by searching back through Hugo award lists from the 70s and 80s. There's a fantastic vibe to a lot of these books that I don't really find in a lot of more recent sci-fi, though I'd definitely like to find it.

If I ever pin down exactly what it is, I'll probably have more luck.

I finished Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy this month, I had been eking the series out over a few months to savour it. It really is a masterful hard sci-fi series, managing to dig deep into the scientific concepts, but also to carry a huge, gripping, and deeply human story.

The other notable read this month was Carnage, by Mark Dapin, which is a true crime book, doing a deep dive on Jack Karlson (of Succulent Chinese Meal fame). It's a really fascinating take on Australian crime from the 60s-2010s, and is also a really nuanced character portrait of someone who is largely known as a meme.

The Countess of Wessex, Chairman, Women’s Network Forum, this afternoon chaired a Meeting at Buckingham Palace. However, injuries have kept Gauthier sidelined since March 17th, which gave Jaxon Castor the chance to lead the Nailers into the postseason. He did that by winning each of his last three starts and allowing only four goals in the process. With four games in five days to begin the series, it wouldn't be a surprise to see both Indy netminders receive playing time right away, as the two were within 100 minutes played of each other during the regular season. Zach Driscoll finished tied for fifth in the ECHL with 22 wins, while Mitchell Weeks was 11th in the circuit with a 2.75 goals against average. Weeks is the only one of the four who has played professional playoff games. DefenseWheeling: Bunz, Drake, Lee, Nickl, Roehl, WaughIndy: Cairns, Cameron, Centorame, Grima, Hadfield, MacDougall, PerrottThe number one job of a defenseman is to prevent the opposition from scoring, and there are some large men who have created havoc for opposing forwards with their imposing play in the defensive zone. Wheeling's Thimo Nickl finished the season with a +25 rating, which is the best for any player on either roster, while Christopher Cameron led Indy at +19, and both are more than capable of throwing the body around. From an offensive standpoint, the Nailers have some powerful weapons on the blueline, as Justin Lee and Davis Bunz both reached the 30-point mark with 19 combined goals. Ross MacDougall was the leading defensive scorer for the Fuel, as he accumulated seven goals and 29 points. Consistency was also key for Wheeling's defense, as five of the six players starting on the playoff roster played in at least 54 games. Indy's back end got reshaped as the season went on, with the additions of Matthew Cairns, Victor Hadfield, and Nick Grima. OffenseWheeling: Addamo, Frasca, Hamaliuk, Jankowski, Kiefiuk, Koopman, Laderoute, Laviolette, Manz, Martel, WestcottIndy: Bellant, Bilek, Bulmer, Gagnier, Hausinger, Hillis, Howarth, Jordan, Lang, Lemos, Maksimovich, Malone, Martin, SpodniakTwo powerful offenses are set to collide, as the Nailers finished the season with 232 goals, while the Fuel turned on the red light 230 times. Jordan Martel was an enormous addition for Wheeling, as he averaged over a point-per-game with 47 points in 45 games after being acquired in a trade from Utah in December. Indy also has a forward averaging over a point-per-game, as Cameron Hillis finished the year with 61 points in 54 matches. Both teams also have superb rookies on their rosters, as Tanner Laderoute of the Nailers and Kyle Maksimovich of the Fuel each produced at least 20 goals and 50 points in their first full seasons as professionals. Martel (35) and Maksimovich (26) were the leading goal scorers for their respective squads. 15 of the 25 forwards who are on the starting playoff rosters reached double digits in goals, with eight for Indy and seven for Wheeling. AHL EligiblesWheeling: Ansons, Belliveau, Headrick, Quercia, Sparks, Svejkovsky, VierlingIndy: KingThe two teams are looking at drastically different situations, when it comes to filling out the remainder of their open roster spots. Indy has named 23 of its 24 players, and only has one player eligible to return from the AHL. That means defenseman D.J. King is expected join the Fuel at some point during the postseason, and if that happens, their work will be done. Wheeling has five open roster spots, with seven possible players to choose from for those positions. Four of the seven spent significant time with the Nailers this season, as Isaac Belliveau, Matthew Quercia, Lukas Svejkovsky, and Evan Vierling all played in at least 30 games. Those four combined for 133 points, which would be a huge injection to the offense. The two teams are in identical positions when it comes to the playoff statuses of their affiliates. Pittsburgh and Chicago both failed to qualify for the postseason in the NHL, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Rockford have both clinched their spots in the AHL's Calder Cup Playoffs, which begin next week. Special TeamsWheeling: PP- 20.5%, 11th. PK- 77.7%, 21st.Indy: PP- 20.9%%, 9th. PK- 78.7%, 15th.As indicated by the numbers, this is a category that is incredibly tight. Indy finished the season with three more power play goals than Wheeling on nine more chances, and there were seven goals of separation between the two penalty kills. And although both teams finished with success rates higher than 20%, the players will have to be alert at all time, as no division saw more shorthanded goals (60) in 2023-24 than the Central. 17 of those goals came from these two clubs. The Nailers scored nine, led by three each from Matthew Quercia and Matt Koopman, while the Fuel had eight, including two by Andrew Bellant. Indy's Bryan Lemos and Cameron Hillis both racked up 21 power play points, and 39 of those 42 came via assists. Jordan Martel was Wheeling's biggest weapon on the man advantage, as he collected ten goals and 21 points with an opponent in the sin bin. The two sides are well aware of how potent the opposition is, as over 1/4 of the power plays were scored on in the 11-game head-to-head season series. Both teams cashed in 12 times against the other on 94 total chances. CoachingWheeling: HC- Derek Army (4th Season, 110-112-15), AC- Mitch Giguere (1st Season)Indy: HC- Duncan Dalmao (3rd Season, 93-55-13), AC- Geoff Schomogyi (1st Season)Derek Army and Duncan Dalmao have a lot of similarities in their paths that have led them to their current positions. To start off, both head coaches spent the majority of their playing careers in the ECHL. Army played parts of five seasons with the Nailers, while Dalmao played for five different ECHL teams, with his longest stint being four seasons with the Roanoke Express. Both gentlemen began their ECHL coaching careers as assistant coaches with different organizations. For Derek, that was the Worcester Railers from 2018-20. For Duncan, that was the 2019-20 Brampton Beast. Army and Dalmao were then hired by their current clubs as assistant coaches, as Derek worked under Mark French, and Duncan worked under Doug Christiansen. Both coaches were promoted to interim head coach in the middle of a season, as Army took over Wheeling's job in 2021, while Dalmao took over Indy's job in 2022. Derek and Duncan both helped their teams return to the playoffs in their first full seasons as head coach, and both will be making their second career appearance behind the bench in the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Mitch Giguere and Geoff Schomogyi may both be new to their respective squads this season, but both bring loads of prior coaching experience to the table, which has helped the two head coaches steer their ships to postseason play. ExperienceWheeling: 1,558 North American professional games (0 prior Kelly Cup Champions)Indy: 3,513 North American professional games (0 prior Kelly Cup Champions)This is not an unfamiliar position for Wheeling, as the Nailers tend to be on the younger side of the age spectrum in the ECHL. David Drake and Matthew Quercia are the only two players remaining from the 2021-22 Nailers, who won a thrilling seven-game opening round series against Fort Wayne. Drake is also the lone veteran (260 pro games or more) on the Wheeling roster, as he has appeared in 327 career contests. Jordan Martel is the only other Nailer outside of the AHL Eligible List with professional playoff experience, as he is playing in the Kelly Cup Playoffs for the third straight spring. On the flip side, Indy is utilizing all four of its veteran spots, as Jon Martin, Brett Bulmer, and Bryan Lemos have all eclipsed 300 pro games, while Chase Lang also qualifies. The Fuel have 11 players who appeared for them in the 2023 postseason, in addition to two players who were with Wheeling in 2022 - Cam Hausinger and Mitchell Weeks. Every single player in this series is looking to have their name engraved on the Kelly Cup for the first time ever ArenasWheeling: WesBanco Arena (opened in 1977), UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex (opened in 2015)Indy: Indiana Farmers Coliseum (opened in 1939)Two classic buildings with history, character, and modernizations will open their doors for this series and the two passionate fanbases that are hungry to see their teams succeed. Wheeling's WesBanco Arena opened in 1977, was fitted for hockey in 1992, and starting in 2014, has gone through various renovations to deliver a modern fan experience. Indiana Farmers Coliseum opened 1939, and experienced its largest renovation prior to the arrival of the Fuel in 2014. WesBanco Arena is one of the smallest buildings in the ECHL, with a seating capacity of 4,700. It also boasts the smallest rink surface, which is most noticeable in the neutral zone. Indiana Farmers Coliseum checks in with a seating capacity of 6,200. Despite only having 1,500 more seats than Wheeling, that puts Indy right in the middle of the pack (4th of 7) for Central Division arenas. Both teams use home ice advantage as a major strength, as the Nailers went 21-13-1 at home this season, while the Fuel were 21-9-6 in their back yard. That note has also held true throughout the years of the head-to-head series, as home teams have won 49 of the 80 (61.3%) all-time meetings between Wheeling and Indy. hi sappy i just saw the chris hadfield vanity fair video you posted about some time back really amazing watch really!! just have to say something abt him speaking on the martian btw (im obligated to coz im a huge fan): the dust storm scene at the start of the book is the only one where andy weir has admitted to taking artistic liberty, and im glad chris also talked about it. also yeah weir kinda did outsource his science at the time. he used to publish this book chapter by chapter on his blog when he wrote it long back, with people who read it via mailing lists would sometimes correct. if u remember the 'fuel burning to create water in the hab' scene, that was one where he fucked up a bit and a chem phd guy told him that with much combustion, mark would def blow up (this was an interview but ive seen so many now idk where it is). so um. uhhhhh soz ig for nerding out in your ask box abt this but you saying that youve read the martian recently has given me brain worms apparently. ima stop rambling now :) byee

In 2013, an orbital event that took place at the International Space Station (ISS) was marked by a special symbol – a deer made of saye. The deer, also known as Sayedne, was created based on the traditional Saye ceremonies of the Anishinaabe people and was placed on the space station by one of the two Canadian astronauts aboard at the time, Chris Hadfield.

The Sayedne deer symbolized the traditional ceremonial exchange of gifts between the Anishinaabek (Ojibwe) Nation and the astronauts of Canada who serve at the ISS. Throughout the ceremony, the astronauts and ground crew exchanged gifts and words of appreciation and peace.

In addition to its symbolic significance, the Sayedne deer also served a practical purpose. The cervine was equipped with a special coin-shaped medallion designed by the Astronaut Program in collaboration with the Enewutakew (Turtle) Clan of the Anishinaabek Nation. This medallion allowed the astronauts to use the deer’s unique caribou shape as a space reference point, helping them to navigate their way around the ISS with more accuracy.

The significance of the Sayedne deer symbol has since extended far beyond that of a navigational tool. For many, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing relationship between the Anishinaabek Nation and the astronauts of Canada. Furthermore, it’s a source of inspiration to explore new heights and take on challenging goals.

John Lee Tipton of Greenville, SC, met his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, on March 18, 2022. He was born in Coatesville, PA, on June 10, 1944, to Isaac Walter Tipton and Betty Hadfield Tipton. He leaves two brothers, Ronald Walter Tipton of Milton, DE, and Isaac Walter Tipton, Jr. of Downingtown, PA. He was married for 58 years to Barbara Princo Tipton, and they had three children, Nancy Lee Tipton of the home, Victoria Lynn (Mark) Payne of Gillette, WY, and John Lee Tipton, Jr. (deceased). John also had two foster daughters whom he loved dearly, Jan Loftis Sinde of Greenville, SC, and Cathy Bridges Powell of San Antonio, TX. He is survived by seven grandchildren and three foster grandchildren.

He served his country in the US Army 529th Military Police in Heidelberg, Germany, and Washington, DC.

He earned a master of arts degree in Bible in 1982 from Bob Jones University and joyfully served the Lord as an assistant pastor at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Cedar Lane Road, Greenville, SC, since 1983.

Visitation and viewing are at Mount Calvary Baptist Church (115 Cedar Lane Road) on Monday, March 21, 4:45–6:45 p.m.; with the funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. Private interment at Coleman Cemetery in Travelers Rest, SC, will be held Tuesday, March 22. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Men's Ministries at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 1430 Hampton Ave. Ext., Greenville, SC 29601.

Bears Varsity Eight Caps Undefeated Season With 18th IRA Title

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The varsity eight entered Sunday's Grand Final with an undefeated record this spring, and with 1,000 meters to go at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship, the Cal men's rowing team's hard work was showing signs of a hard-fought victory. With the win, the Bears secured the program's 18th national championship and 100th national title overall for Cal Athletics. The Varsity Challenge Cup was not the only hardware Cal took home. The Bears' second varsity eight won silver in the Kennedy Cup in a thrilling comeback.  "Really proud of how the guys raced today," said head coach Scott Frandsen. "A full team effort leading to the varsity being able to really have their best race of the year and represent the team and win. They executed their race perfectly, really happy for those nine guys and the full 60 guys on the team. This has been the goal all year and the guys did it." Like it did all season, the V8+ got off to a fast start. The top four boats of Cal, Yale, Washington, and Brown separated themselves from the remainder of the field in the first 100 meters. By the 500-meter mark, the Bears had a two-seat advantage on the Bulldogs. By the 1,000-meter mark, the Bears and Bulldogs pulled away from the rest of the field, with Cal extending its lead over Yale. The Bears' championship boat, led by Pac-12 Male Athlete of the Year Ollie Maclean, Newcomer of the Year Gennaro di Mauro as well as all-conference honorees Elliott Kemp, Angus Dawson, and Campbell Crouch, defeated a Yale boat that featured three Olympians by over two seconds, finishing with a time of 5:44.239. Cal took home their 18th Varsity Challenge Cup in a long and storied history stretching back nearly a century. The Golden Bears also won national championships in 1928, '32, '34, '35, '39, '49, '60, '61, '64, '76, '99, '00, '01, '02, '06,'10 and ‘16.  It is also believed to be the first undefeated season for the V8+ since 2001 when Frandsen was in the boat for the Bears. In the battle for the Stewards Cup, Yale, Harvard, and Washington took the early lead. The Bears began their move over the final 1,000 meters to try to chase down Dartmouth and Washington for a place on the podium but ran out of race track to take fifth with a time of 6:11.513. In the final for the Kennedy Cup, the 2V8+ was tremendous. The Bears opened the race in the lead pack but sat in fifth behind leaders Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and Washington. At the 1,000-meter mark, Cal began its charge, moving into third and closing fast. Over the final 100 meters, the Bears took control of second and held off Dartmouth, capturing silver by over three seconds with a time of 5:54.052.
