22nd Wednesday
Running under double reefed Topsails and foresail. Sighted Prince Edwards Isles: neared them in the afternoon and passed them in the first watch. The Snow was lying on The high Land in great quantitys and the air very cold. Several very handsome Cape Pigeons flying about. Slight Snow Shower.
Campbell's Notes:
Prince Edward Isles, Marion (Latitude 46°55'S, Longitude 37°45'E) and Prince Edward (Latitude 46°54'S, Longitude 37°42'E) Islands, may have been sighted by a vessel of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (Dutch East India Company), the Maerseveen, on passage from Cape of Good Hope to Batavia in 1663 and called Dina and Maerseveen, but were definitely sighted by Marion Dufresne on 13 January and Crozet Island on 23 January 1772. (Headland, Chronological, p. 12 and Duyker, An Officer, p. 175.) Prince Edward Island was named by Captain Cook, 12 December 1776 ‘As thise islands have no name in the French Chart, I shall distinguish the two we have seen by the name Prince Edward Islands after His Majesty's 4th Son, and the others Morion and Crozets Islands.’ (Beaglehole, Journals…Resolution and Discovery, I. pp. 25–6.) Prince Edward was Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent, 4th son of King George III. He married Victoria Mary Louise, widow of Emich Charles, Prince of Leiningen and daughter of Francis, Duke of SaxeCoburg and Saalfield and had one daughter, Victoria, who became Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain &c.
Cape Pigeons, or Pintado Petrel, Daption capensis. Roberts, Edward Wilson's Birds, p. 94. Hadoram Shirihai, Complete Guide to Antarctic Wildlife, pp. 139–41, gives modern form Daption capense.

Book Recs: Feline Reads
Mimi Lee Gets a Clue by Jennifer J. Chow
Mimi Lee hoped to give Los Angeles animal lovers something to talk about with her pet grooming shop, Hollywoof. She never imagined that the first cat she said hello to would talk back or be quite so, well, catty - especially about those disastrous dates Mimi's mother keeps setting up. When Marshmallow exposes local breeder Russ Nolan for mistreating Chihuahuas, Mimi steals some of her cat's attitude to tell Russ off. The next day the police show up at Hollywoof. Russ has been found dead, and Mimi's shouting match with him has secured her top billing as the main suspect. Hoping to clear her name and save the pups Russ left behind, Mimi enlists help from her dreamy lawyer neighbor Josh. But even with Josh on board, it'll take Mimi and Marshmallow a lot of sleuthing and more than a little sass to get back to the pet-grooming life - and off the murder scene.
This is the first volume in the “A Sassy Cat Mystery” series.
Lawyer for the Cat by Lee Robinson
Sally Baynard is one of the best lawyers around. In the years since her divorce from Family Court Judge Joe Baynard, she dedicated herself to representing the worst and craziest Charleston, S.C. had to offer. But none of the murderers, burglars, or angry divorcing clients compared to Sherman, the dog her ex-husband appointed her to represent. Although the miniature Schnauzer found his way into her heart (and brought his handsome vet Tony along too), his case was a thorny one. With that business out of the way, Sally is happy to move back to non-canine clients... until a probate judge asks her about a cat. Agreeing to represent Beatrice, a black cat who's the beneficiary of a multi-million dollar trust and a plantation, Sally must put her wit, charm, and brains to the test, choosing among three colorful potential caregivers while dodging the former owner's angry son. Meanwhile, Sally must juggle the demands of the court with those of her aging mother and make a decision about Tony, who wants to get more serious. Lawyer for the Cat is Southern women's fiction at its most delightful, featuring strong, smart characters, a charming setting, and plenty of adorable critters.
This is the second volume in the “Sally Baynard” series.
Probable Claws by Rita Mae Brown
With the New Year just around the corner, winter has transformed the cozy Blue Ridge Mountain community of Crozet, Virginia, into a living snow globe. It’s the perfect setting for Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen to build a new work shed designed by her dear friend, local architect Gary Gardner. But the natural serenity is shattered when out of the blue, right in front of Harry and Deputy Cynthia Cooper, and in broad daylight, Gary is shot to death by a masked motorcyclist. Outraged by the brazen murder, Harry begins to burrow into her friend’s past - and unearths a pattern of destructive greed reaching far back into Virginia’s post-Revolutionary history. When Harry finds incriminating evidence, the killer strikes again. Heedless of her own safety, Harry follows a trail of clues to a construction site in Richmond, where the discovery of mysterious remains has recently halted work. Aided as always by her loyal, if opinionated, companions, crime-solving cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker the Corgi, Harry hunts for a link between the decades-old dead, the recently violently deceased - and ancient secrets that underlie everything. And while other deaths are narrowly averted in a flurry of fur, the killer remains at large - ever more desperate and dangerous. The deep-rooted legacy of corruption that’s been exposed can never be buried again. But if Harry keeps pursuing the terrible truth, she may be digging her own grave.
This is the 27th volume in the “Mrs. Murphy” series.
The Cat Who Saved Books by Sōsuke Natsukawa
Bookish high school student Rintaro Natsuki is about to close the secondhand bookstore he inherited from his beloved bookworm grandfather. Then, a talking cat named Tiger appears with an unusual request. The feline asks for - or rather, demands - the teenager’s help in saving books with him. The world is full of lonely books left unread and unloved, and Tiger and Rintaro must liberate them from their neglectful owners.
Their mission sends this odd couple on an amazing journey, where they enter different mazes to set books free. Through their travels, Tiger and Rintaro meet a man who leaves his books to perish on a bookshelf, an unwitting book torturer who cuts the pages of books into snippets to help people speed read, and a publishing drone who only wants to create bestsellers. Their adventures culminate in one final, unforgettable challenge - the last maze that awaits leads Rintaro down a realm only the bravest dare enter...

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT PETER CHANEL The Protomartyr of Oceania Feast Day: April 28
"It does not matter whether or not I am killed; the religion has taken root on the island; it will not be destroyed by my death, since it comes not from men, but from God."
Peter Chanel was born on July 12, 1803, in the hamlet of La Potière near Montrevel-en-Bresse, Ain département, France. He was the fifth of eight children, and is the son of Claude-François Chanel and Marie-Anne Sibellas. His intelligence and piety were noticed by the local parish priest, Trompier, who helped him enter the seminary.
He won the esteem of his bishop, who said of him: 'He has the faith of a child and leads the life of an angel.'
After ordained as a priest on July 15, 1827, he was appointed for three years to the rural parish of Crozet, where he brought about a great religious revival. However, his heart had long been set on missionary work, and in 1831 at the age of 28, he joined the Marist Fathers, who were involved in missions abroad.
In 1836, he landed on the island of Futuna in the southwest Pacific, where the name of Jesus Christ had never been preached before. After learning the local language and healing the sick, he gained the confidence of the people and converted many of them.
By his preaching, he destroyed the cult of the evil spirits, in which the chieftains encouraged in order to keep the tribe under their rule.
They sent a band of native warriors. The day before his martyrdom, he said: 'It does not matter if I die. Christ's faith is so deeply rooted on this island, that it cannot be destroyed by my death.'
King Niuliki believed Christianity would undermine his authority as high priest and king. When his son, Meitala, sought to be baptised, the king sent a favored warrior, his son-in-law, Musumusu, to 'do whatever was necessary' to resolve the problem. Musumusu went to Meitala and the two fought. Musumusu, injured in the fracas, went to Chanel feigning need of medical attention.
While Chanel tended him, a group of others ransacked his house. Musumusu took an ax and clubbed Chanel to death on April 28, 1841. A few years later, all of the natives were converted to the Christian faith.
Beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1889 and canonized by Pope Pius XII on June 12, 1954, his major shrine can be found in Futuna.

Paula Wanece Grasty Frazier passed away on Tuesday May 30, 2023, at home with her family by her side. Paula was born on August 25, 1928, in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Eula and Ernest Grasty of Crozet, Virginia.
Paula aka Wanece or "Nece" spent her early years running wild on her family orchards, there was one Cherry tree in particular that housed her on a regular basis. She left the mountain to go to Bob Jones University where she graduated with her B.S. in Education, years later receiving her Master's in Administration from U.V.A.
Paula married Robert Eugene Frazier and began the adventure of her life as a military wife. Their homes are too numerous to mention but the longest residences were Arizona, Germany, Nashville, Japan and finally back home to Charlottesville.
During all these travels she taught school, raised children, Robert Frazier II and his beloved wife, Sharon Frazier-Cotton, and Paula Gene Frazier Clark; loved and enjoyed her six grandchildren, Robert Eugene Frazier III, Loman Alexander Frazier, Paula Olivia Clark, Bianca Wanece Clark, Joseph Nolton Frazier and Jessica Marie Frazier, as well as a gaggle of treasured great-grandchildren.
Her accomplishments were many, an excellent cook, seamstress, knitter and jewelry maker but most importantly she was the rock of our family. She will be missed and loved always.
A graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Satursday, June 3, 2023, at Hillsboro Cemetery, Crozet, Va.

Le challenge Charlotte illustré
Tumblr media

Saint Peter Chanel
Born to a peasant family, he was a shepherd as a boy. An excellent student. Ordained in 1827 at age 24. He was assigned to Crozet, a parish in decline; he turned it around, in part because of his ministry to the sick, and brought a spiritual revival. Joined the Society of Mary (Marist Fathers) in 1831. Taught at the Belley seminary for five years. Led a band of missionaries to the New Hebrides in 1836, an area where cannabilism had only recently been outlawed; he was the first Christian missionary on the island of Fortuna. He converted many, often as a result of his work with the sick. He learned the local language, and taught in the local school. Killed by order of Niuliki, a native priest-king who was jealous of Peter's influence; the king's own son and daughter had become Christians. First martyr in Oceania.

Wish You Were Here by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown
I like a cozy mystery with a cool gimmick  Wish You Were Here has one.
Following Mary Minor Harristeen ("Harry") post mistress of small town Crozet, Virginia; her grey tabby cat Mrs. Murphy and her corgi Tucker. When postcards with gravesites start showing up in select mail boxes, and the recipients turn up dead, the trio end up trying to solvea murder mystery.
If this sounds a bit Scooby-Doo,  don't worry. While we get the perspective of the cat and the dog, it does shift between them and the humans of the book. People can't understand them in any case. The animals of the book have a decidedly  non human viewpoint of the world, and are consistently frustrated by the dulled senses of their human companion
The Mystery is good, I figured out who did it, but the journey was fun.
There are a few things that I didn't like. The pace of the story is slow, this is not helped by the very etiquette driven version of the south that the author depicts. Few people say things outright which means you read a paragraph to get a sentence's worth of information.
Like Dean Koontz the author uses the characters to opine on the inadequacies of the world, but thankfully there aren't that many, and some of them come from the animals which makes them less irritating (at least to me).
All in all, I enjoyed it.

Memorial of Saint Peter Chanel, priest and martyr

From the Strategist: The Best Turkeys You Can Order Online, According to Experts
Tumblr media
Getty Images
From fresh to fried, how to get turkey shipped straight to your door, from the Strategist
Thanksgiving 2020 is shaping up to be unlike any other. More people will be driving to see their relatives than flying, and many folks may not travel at all, choosing instead to spend the holiday with close friends (or with Zoom). Factor in the need to put together an elaborate meal, and stress is inevitable — especially when it comes to sourcing a turkey. If you’ve never been in charge of the bird before and have no idea where to begin, don’t fret. We spoke to four experts, including the heads of two professional test kitchens and a fourth-generation butcher, who told us about the best turkeys you can get shipped straight to your door (including one option that’ll arrive mostly cooked, requiring minimal day-of work). Just be sure to order soon, as Thanksgiving is only a few short weeks away.
The Best Turkey to Order Online
Tumblr media
There are dozens of places to get a turkey from online, but Gaby Melian, the test kitchen manager at Bon Appétit, says that she’s always turned to D’Artagnan for high quality birds. Over the five years she’s been ordering turkeys for the magazine, she estimates she’s bought roughly 100. “This year was extra challenging, due to COVID and long distances, since the team was in different places,” she says. (Add to that the challenge that BA orders turkeys in summer, when they’re not yet in season.) “I was able to get them through D’Artagnan here in New Jersey and they were sent as far as L.A. This company is reliable, and their products are fantastic,” she says.
The Best Fried Turkey to Order Online
Tumblr media
If you don’t want to spend hours making a turkey, consider the deep fried turkeys from Brooklyn-based operation Jive Turkey, which “has its very own cult following,” says Elle Simone Scott, executive editor at America’s Test Kitchen and founder of SheChef Inc. “Their fried turkey has been their claim to fame since being featured on Food Network in 2009.” The company ships nationwide out of Chicago and offers 15 versions of fried turkey, including lemon pepper, red wine cranberry, and barbecue. Best of all, it only has to be reheated on the big day.
The Best Heritage Turkey to Order Online
Tumblr media
If genetic diversity is important to you, consider purchasing a heritage turkey like UK-favorite KellyBronze, now sold through one iconic Michigan retailer. “Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is really the granddaddy of mail order food in the Midwest,” says Brenna Houck, editor of Eater Detroit. “Around Thanksgiving, it’s basically a one stop shop for anything one could possibly want for an at-home feast. Want a heritage-breed turkey? Zingerman’s is shipping out 15 to 17 pound rarified birds from a farm in Crozet, Virginia. Need a brine for that turkey? Zingerman’s has you covered.”
The Best Organic, Free Range Turkey to Order Online
Tumblr media
For those who like to make sure their turkey lived as happy a life as possible, there’s the certified organic turkeys from Mary’s, based in California and operated by the Pitman family since 1954. “I love Mary’s because they’re a family-owned business doing meat the right way,” says Cara Nicoletti, founder of Seemore Meats & Veggies and a fourth-generation butcher. “Their turkeys are all free-range, treated humanely, and fed a vegetarian diet.” The company offers not only organic turkeys, but heritage and non-GMO varieties as well.
The Best Small Turkey to Order Online
Tumblr media
If you’re feeding a small group of just four to five people, a whole bird may be too much. Luckily, Greensbury, which specializes in grass-fed livestock and sustainably sourced meats, has you covered with this 4–5 pound turkey breast. “They control the entire process, from the farm to your door, and the care that goes into their products shows,” says Nicoletti. “I love when meat companies are super transparent about where their meat comes from, and they do a great job explaining this to customers.”

Want a heritage-breed turkey? Zingerman’s is shipping out 15 to 17 pound rarified birds from a farm in Crozet, Virginia. Need a brine for that turkey? Zingerman’s has you covered.”

If you’re feeding a small group of just four to five people, a whole bird may be too much. Luckily, Greensbury, which specializes in grass-fed livestock and sustainably sourced meats, has you covered with this 4–5 pound turkey breast. “They control the entire process, from the farm to your door, and the care that goes into their products shows,” says Nicoletti. “I love when meat companies are super transparent about where their meat comes from, and they do a great job explaining this to customers.”

POLARISCOPE, STEPHANE DUGAST
Tumblr media
