An Ironwood meta that just randomly popped into my head.
So I’ve been skimming over a lot of the observations on RWBY from @bionic-jedi and aside from the glurge of absolutely adorable Nuts ‘n Dolts stuff (Which I appreciate, I ship it now), the part that really got my attention was all the shit going down around Ironwood. I don’t watch the show anymore, not that I hated it or anything I just sorta lost interest in the show itself, decided it ultimately wasn’t really for me and mainly just enjoy it through fanart and shipping now, but from what I gathered from bionic-jedi’s Let’s Watch Ironwood sounds absolutely fascinating in all the ways that I don’t think was intentional by the CRWBY but is still pretty awesome that it’s there.
Forgive me if I get the details wrong since I haven’t kept up with the show and all my info is coming second hand from @bionic-jedi, but from I could gather Ironwood comes across as a man who:
- Is an experienced veteran fighter who individually is very badass with a proven tactical record on the battlefield
- Has the natural charisma to instill genuine loyalty and belief in his cause into his subordinates (To paraphrase Mass Effect 3 for a bit, you can pay a man to fight, you can pay him to charge up a hill, but no amount of money in the world will ever convince a man to believe in you), and does possess a genuine care for the troops under his command
- Will nonetheless still engage in abusive behavior if a subordinate is not performing in a way he believes is proper for their duty (Yeah I would consider forcibly hacking a sapient being to count as that)
- Carries around a very cool badass revolver as a signature weapon
- While brilliant tactically, possess horrible long term strategic assessment skills that if allowed to be acted upon could have/did end in disaster
You know what that sounds like? Ironwood is almost a perfect RWBY equivalent for George R. Patton (with maybe a bit of Bernard Montgomery thrown in).
Tumblr media
Like, I think that the CRWBY may have accidentally written a scenario that asks “What if Patton was the Supreme Commander of the Western Front instead of Eisenhower?” And the results are an absolute clusterfuck unfolding in real time, but I feel I gotta clarify this.
Patton is one of America’s most celebrated and respected generals, and for good reason. Dude was a badass with a keen sense of armor tactics and mobile warfare that proved repeatedly that he could beat the Germans at their own game. His personal bravery could also never be called into question, having proven his mettle in direct combat during both the Hunt for Pancho Villa and WW1, as well as putting his own life in danger being very close to the front lines numerous times during WW2, one time even riding a tank into a German-occupied village to inspire his men. He also did genuinely care for the lives of his men, only ever seen openly weeping when mourning for the lives of his fallen soldiers, treating his wounded troops with the highest respect, and properly giving praise when they did a good job.
For all of Ironwood’s faults, his own mettle is certainly not into question given he suffered such grievous injuries that half his body is now cybernetics, and the man for sure knows how to fight and fight well, so that’s one similarity with Patton. He has also inspired real loyalty in Winter and the Ace Operatives, and in turn he does seem to actually care for them, and he had no real reason to give Yang a new prosthetic arm (and rather quickly fast tracking her an incredibly advanced one at that), so he’s not completely heartless or devoid of empathy.
However, Patton was a man focused on the tactical short term in lieu of long term strategic planning, and possessed with some horrendous character flaws that bit him in the ass on several occasions. One of them being the, even by the standards of the 40′s, deplorable manner in which he treated soldiers wracked with what we in the modern day would diagnose as PTSD. The man flat out did not believe PTSD was a real thing, thinking of it as cowardice and...you know what? I’m just gonna let the Wikipedia quotes say it all, I bolded some choice quotes for convenience:
Private Charles H. Kuhl, of L Company, U.S. 26th Infantry Regiment, reported to an aid station of C Company, 1st Medical Battalion, on 2 August 1943. Kuhl, who had been in the U.S. Army for eight months, had been attached to the 1st Infantry Division since 2 June 1943. He was diagnosed with "exhaustion," a diagnosis he had been given three times since the start of the campaign. From the aid station, he was evacuated to a medical company and given sodium amytal. Notes in his medical chart indicated "psychoneurosis anxiety state, moderately severe (soldier has been twice before in hospital within ten days. He can't take it at the front, evidently. He is repeatedly returned.)" Kuhl was transferred from the aid station to the 15th Evacuation Hospital near Nicosia for further evaluation.
Patton arrived at the hospital the same day, accompanied by a number of medical officers, as part of his tour of the U.S. II Corps troops. He spoke to some patients in the hospital, commending the physically wounded. He then approached Kuhl, who did not appear to be physically injured. Kuhl was sitting slouched on a stool midway through a tent ward filled with injured soldiers. When Patton asked Kuhl where he was hurt, Kuhl reportedly shrugged and replied that he was "nervous" rather than wounded, adding, "I guess I can't take it." Patton "immediately flared up,” slapped Kuhl across the chin with his gloves, then grabbed him by the collar and dragged him to the tent entrance. He shoved him out of the tent with a kick to his backside. Yelling "Don't admit this son of a bitch," Patton demanded that Kuhl be sent back to the front, adding, "You hear me, you gutless bastard? You're going back to the front."
Corpsmen picked up Kuhl and brought him to a ward tent, where it was discovered he had a temperature of 102.2 °F (39.0 °C); and was later diagnosed with malarial parasites. Speaking later of the incident, Kuhl noted "at the time it happened, [Patton] was pretty well worn out  ... I think he was suffering a little battle fatigue himself." Kuhl wrote to his parents about the incident, but asked them to "just forget about it." That night, Patton recorded the incident in his diary: "[I met] the only errant coward I have ever seen in this Army. Companies should deal with such men, and if they shirk their duty, they should be tried for cowardice and shot."
Private Paul G. Bennett, 21, of C Battery, U.S. 17th Field Artillery Regiment, was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Army, and had served in the division since March 1943. Records show he had no medical history until 6 August 1943, when a friend was wounded in combat. According to a report, he "could not sleep and was nervous." Bennett was brought to the 93rd Evacuation Hospital. In addition to having a fever, he exhibited symptoms of dehydration, including fatigue, confusion, and listlessness. His request to return to his unit was turned down by medical officers. A medical officer describing Bennett's condition
And yet another incident like this:
The shells going over him bothered him. The next day he was worried about his buddy and became more nervous. He was sent down to the rear echelon by a battery aid man and there the medical aid man gave him some tranquilizers that made him sleep, but still he was nervous and disturbed. On the next day the medical officer ordered him to be evacuated, although the boy begged not to be evacuated because he did not want to leave his unit.
On 10 August, Patton entered the receiving tent of the hospital, speaking to the injured there. Patton approached Bennett, who was huddled and shivering, and asked what the trouble was. "It's my nerves," Bennett responded. "I can't stand the shelling anymore." Patton reportedly became enraged at him, slapping him across the face. He began yelling: "Your nerves, hell, you are just a goddamned coward. Shut up that goddamned crying. I won't have these brave men who have been shot at seeing this yellow bastard sitting here crying." Patton then reportedly slapped Bennett again, knocking his helmet liner off, and ordered the receiving officer, Major Charles B. Etter, not to admit him. Patton then threatened Bennett, "You're going back to the front lines and you may get shot and killed, but you're going to fight. If you don't, I'll stand you up against a wall and have a firing squad kill you on purpose. In fact, I ought to shoot you myself, you goddamned whimpering coward." Upon saying this, Patton pulled out his pistol threateningly, prompting the hospital's commander, Colonel Donald E. Currier, to physically separate the two. Patton left the tent, yelling to medical officers to send Bennett back to the front lines.
As he toured the remainder of the hospital, Patton continued discussing Bennett's condition with Currier. Patton stated, "I can't help it, it makes my blood boil to think of a yellow bastard being babied," and "I won't have those cowardly bastards hanging around our hospitals. We'll probably have to shoot them some time anyway, or we'll raise a breed of morons."
There were serious cries for Patton to get sacked after theses incidents, his reputation and job only saved because Eisenhower knew his tactical command abilities were simply too valuable to give up and so was only temporarily relieved of duty instead. Point I’m trying to make here is that while Patton could definitely hold sympathy and understanding for his men, it was contingent on them acting in a way he believed was properly honoring their duty. If they erred from his ideals of a how a proper soldier behaved, he could lapse into some seriously abusive behavior disturbingly quickly.
I can’t be the only one that sees some parallels between this and Ironwood hacking Penny am I? A man who cares for his troops but as soon as Penny acted in a way he deemed to be out of line, immediately sought to violate her autonomy and rights as a sapient being to force her back into line and back into his ideals of how a proper soldier should behave. Perhaps he wasn’t as violently physically aggressive about it as Patton, but arguably what Ironwood did was ethically much worse than slapping the shit out of and threatening people.
Patton also wasn’t the type to worry about the long term consequences of his actions. Before he died in a car accident shortly after WW2 he was unceremoniously sacked from his job after making one too many aggressive comments towards the Soviet Union, potentially nudging towards a potential Operation Unthinkable, and carelessly allowing former Nazis back into political power. Both of these were unthinkably horrible for obvious reasons.
There is one key difference between Patton and Ironwood however. Eisenhower was keenly aware of Patton’s potential shortcomings and he was kept on a leash and out of the highest levers of power, thus preventing him from ever being in a position where his worst traits would allow him to truly fuck up. Ironwood however I feel got Peter Principle’d hardcore and was promoted way above his level of competence (Always a risk for men who gain a reputation as “fightin’ generals”, see: John Bell Hood), where his positive qualities of personal physical bravery, combat skill and tactical leadership is wasted and his worst qualities of hyper-focus on short sighted tactical victories over long term strategic goals, paranoia and distrust leading to an excessive need for control, and moral cowardice are allowed to flourish.
And we see the consequences of it. He may have started with solid pragmatic ideas, but his insanely one-track minded obsession with short term strategic goals like making sure he has control over the Winter Maiden is costing him big long term strategically by burning bridges with potentially valuable allies and isolating himself and his command. Valuable time and resources that could have been spent coordinating forces against Salem wasted on various shenanigans involving Penny, RWBY and JN_R. Especially devastating given that Atlas is the only industrialized military power worth a damn in this world and isn’t reliant on mostly independent and unorganized Hunters and Huntresses (individually skilled but too few in number and takes far too long to train each one to reliably stop a Grimm invasion), and he’s just wasting the resources of the world power best able to hold the line against the Grimm.
Next part is a bit of a non-sequitur and really long so I put it in between the dotted lines if y’all ain’t interested and want to skip on over to the relevant Ironwood parts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Getting a feel for the strategic situation in Atlas, I get a strong sense that what Atlas needs more than anything else right now is a Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower the the exact man needed to lead the Western allies, and I can’t see anyone else doing as realistically as good a job as he did, this is a hill I’ll die on. It wouldn’t look like it at first, the man had never once commanded a unit in battle (a fact that made many of his “actually seen combat” rivals bitter), and his softer, more easy going disposition would seem at odds with the alpha-male take charge image cultivated by men like Patton and Montgomery that would be stereotypically expected of a general, much less a Supreme Commander.
However, that calm exterior hid a man with a sharp eye on the necessary strategic goals needed for victory, expert resource and personnel management skills, the humility to listen to his subordinates and admit his own mistakes, and most importantly, both the smooth negotiating skills and the iron will necessary to deal with larger than life figures.
The western allies were made up of many different nations and factions and filled to the brim with what I would call (to put it lightly) strong personalities. This was an organization that involved:
- Franklin D. Roosevelt
- Winston Churchill
- Charles De Gaulle
- Bernard Montgomery
- The aforementioned Patton
- Occasional dealings with Stalin even
All of them larger than life personalities, all of them strong willed and possessed of their own ideas of how to win the war as well as their own political/personal motives, and all of them vying for dominance in the strategic decision making of the Western Allies. It was like herding a clowder of cats, but all the cats had frggin tanks and bombs. Eisenhower actually managed to cut through the bullshit and resist all the arm twisting and actually got all the different countries, armies and leaders together to act upon a united plan. He did this while still being able to control his subordinates worst impulses and (mostly) was able to resist the shitty plans put up and embrace the good ones (for the most part, Montgomery did manage to convince him to approve of Operation Market Garden, and it was the last major German victory of the war mostly due to Monty’s mishandling). Tactical battle ability was largely irrelevant for Eisenhower’s role, and his ability to see the big picture clearly and being able to maneuver through the internal politics meant everything to his success as a Supreme Commander.
If Eisenhower or an Eisenhower-esque figure was in charge of Atlas during this latest season, you’d probably get a drastically different turn of events. An Eisenhower would not be so quick to drastic action as Ironwood was. An Eisenhower would probably sit down with their subordinates, hear out all their arguments for why or why shouldn’t a specific action be taken, then calmly consider their actions. An Eisenhower would probably then say “Working with an enemy agent to hack into the Winter Maiden is a dumb idea” and proceed to create plans on how to coordinate all available forces in Remnant to best fend off Salem.
Atlas as a whole doesn’t really strike me as the type of organization that would raise an Eisenhower though. Militaries are always offshoots of the cultures that create them, and I don’t believe it to be a coincidence that a Supreme Commander like Eisenhower would be American. The country was literally founded on democratic ideals and it was enshrined very early into its history that the military would always be subordinate to the civilian government. This precedent makes it necessary that anyone that rises high enough in the military must be able to respect a strong civilian presence and be able to work with both internal and external politics. Any general that rises high enough must be half-general half-politician by necessity (there’s a reason why former military often do have successful political careers after retiring from service, including the aforementioned Eisenhower who eventually became the 34th President of the United States).
Atlas just doesn’t strike me as having that same sort of cultural framework. If anything the Atlas military strikes me as having a cultural framework closer to WW2 Germany where tactical efficiency and high tech weaponry/tools is prized above all else, often at the cost of long term strategic goal setting. Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan never set realistic goals for themselves and predictably got steamrolled eventually. Occasionally you’ll get an online thread asking “What if Germany/Japan had smart top leadership during WW2?” But that’s a trick question. A WW2 Germany/Japan with sensible leadership...just isn’t WW2 Germany/Japan at all, it was intrinsic to the identity and character of those nations in that time period. Similarly, I just don’t see an Atlas military that sees a potential Eisenhower in their ranks and thinks to promote them to High Command as opposed to just shuffling them off as an aide to some random officer and never consider them for higher promotion. An organization that prizes short term tactical victory over long term strategic goals just isn’t the type of organization to do that.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thing is though, I think just from what I gathered, Ironwood just shot up to be my favorite RWBY character because of how frigging fascinatingly horrible he is. He’s not an entirely awful person (at least not at first), but his own paranoia and fear combined with his habit of confusing short term tactical advantage with long term strategic goals leads him down the path of utterly despicable actions while convincing himself that it’s all for the greater good. All while being an idiot and wasting the legitimate game-changer resources of having an actual army when everyone else is still dicking around with hunters and huntresses as their only defense.
Smart money is he’s gonna die, it seems to be where he’s heading. If CRWBY’s writing staff has some serious cajones however, it’d be really cool if they pulled a Catra on him and see how low they can make him sink before making him hit rock bottom, realize his mistakes and force him to work hard for a redemption arc. I dunno, maybe I’m giving him too much slack but I actually do feel for him a little bit. The dude was clearly an alright guy that had the world fall down on him and just wasn’t suited for the massive responsibility that circumstances forced on his shoulders. He’s still a soldier that genuinely wants to protect Atlas, he’s just too short sighted to see how his actions just aren’t what Atlas is gonna need in the long term. Maybe a harsh talking to by Glinda would do him some good (I still ship IronWitch don’t @ me). I dunno, I just think that a redemption arc would be a lot harder to write than just killing him off, and thus would be that much more satisfying to see it pulled off right like what Noelle Stevenson did with Catra’s character in She-Ra.

Is there a Plant-based Treatment for Malaria?
Introduction
Approximately 210 million people get infected with malaria, and close to 440,000 people die from the disease. These numbers affect mostly young children in Africa, and currently, no vaccine has been approved for human use for malaria. The gravity of the situation is clear, for it only takes an infected mosquito to bite and transmit the parasite to numerous people. Preventative measures are key and organizations such as the World Health Organization, chooses to remind individuals in the tropical and subtropical countries to wear protective clothing, set up bed nets at night and use insect repellents. But there are medicines that are currently used as part of the treatment for the disease, which are effective (when diagnosed correctly), even though there is no official vaccine (“Malaria”).
Malaria, AKA the “King of Diseases”, is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium and the most serious type of it known as Plasmodium falciparum. There are other human species as well, such as P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae. The need for effective and practical diagnosis is increasing, especially since it is a global issue. To do this, diagnosis needs to be more streamlined and for that, it is important that early symptoms are caught at the right moment, especially since they are very nonspecific and variable (Tangpukdee).
______________________________________________________________________________
Symptoms
Earliest symptoms - make it hard to diagnose and can be overlapping with other viral or bacterial infections (Tangpukdee). These are considered as the more common combination of symptoms:
Fever
Headache
Myalgia
Chills and weakness
Abdominal pain
Diarrhea
Nausea
Vomiting
Malaria “attacks”: some individuals can experience these “attacks” that begin with shivering and chills, followed by high fever, then sweating, then back to normal temperature (“Malaria”). These are considered the stages for the classical malaria attack, as written by the CDC, and lasts for about 6-10 hours.
Serious, severe malaria occurs when organ complications come into play and failures or abnormalities in the blood or metabolism are observed. According to the CDC, here are the following manifestations:
Cerebral malaria
Abnormal behavior
Impairment of consciousness
Seizures
Coma
Other neurological abnormalities
Severe anemia due to destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis)
Can lead to hemoglobin in the urine (hemoglobinuria) as a result.
ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome)
It is an inflammatory reaction in the lungs that basically inhibits oxygen exchange, which is what our lungs are responsible for.
This could occur even after parasite counts have decreased after treatment
Low blood pressure due to cardiovascular system collapse
Acute kidney journey
Excessive acidity in the blood and tissue fluids - Metabolic acidosis
Low blood glucose - Hypoglycemia (can also occur in pregnant women with uncomplicated malaria)
Hyperparasitemia
When more than 5% of the RBCs are infected by malaria parasites
**There are many strains of the parasite and these symptoms are from the common strains observed.**
Malaria Relapses: within P. vivax and P. ovale infections, patients who may have recovered the first time around can suffer from additional attacks - “relapses” - after months or even years without symptoms. These relapses occur due to P.vivax and P. ovale have parasites (“hypnozoites”) that can remain dormant in your liver and can reactivate later. There are treatments to reduce these relapses and should follow the treatment of the first attack (“CDC - Malaria - About Malaria - Disease”).
______________________________________________________________________________
Treatment
Maximum drug effects, as observed, were between 18-24 hrs of parasite development; once again, showing the importance of early diagnosis. Increase in parasitic metabolic activity correlated with decreased drug sensitivity.
Chloroquine (CQ)
Quinine (QN)
Artemisinin (AR)
Sodium artelinate (SA)
AR and its related compounds produced the most rapid parasitic clearance, followed by CQ and then QN. Basically, the artemisinin compounds, which behaved similarly, “had an overall broader time window of antimalarial effect than either CQ or QN ''(Terkuile, 91). In severe malaria cases, artemisinin derivatives also showed greater likelihood of inhibiting parasite cycle than other drugs.
CQ shows the most rapid onset of action out of the four drugs by inhibiting the parasite’s protein and nucleic acid synthesis. In contrast, there is a lag time of 1-4 hours before AR compounds begin to show any of the measurable effects, but after this, the reaction is very rapid as compared to CQ and QN.
Based on this information, the delayed activity of AR and SA would be in favor for those with blood concentrations that were constant or above the concentration that inhibited parasite activity (or the inhibitory concentration) for several hours. Basically, these drugs are stage dependent and thus, the stage of infection will dictate which drug is best fit (Terkuile, 92).
______________________________________________________________________________
Plant Based Treatment
Based on an assessment conducted by Alshawsh et al., the following information provides an overview of some Yemeni Medicinal plants that have antimalarial properties (specifically against Plasmodium falciparum).
The following medicinal extracts are commonly used in Yemen by traditional healers and the study conducted evaluated their behavior against isolates of Plasmodium falciparum, in vitro (not in a biological setting, isolated).
The IC50 of a medicine is the concentration of the medication in the blood that can inhibit the replication of the malarial parasite. It is the concentration at which 50% of the parasitic replication will be inhibited (“Concentration”). A low concentration indicates that less of the medication is needed to have an effect, thus implying the efficiency of the product.
Out of the 6 plants, there were three that were found to have significant positive effects with their IC50 value being less than 4 microgram/ml.

This table shows all the medicines lined up and compared with the SMI or inhibition rate of the parasite of Chloroquine, which is a widely used drug for malaria. Among all of the medicines, only Acalypha fruticosa, Azadirachta indica, and Dendrosicyos socotrana showed any inhibition against parasite growth.
Acalypha fruticose
Traditional Uses: Antiinflammatory, antimalarial, antibacterial.
Active components: Tannins, terpenoids, flavonoids, proteins, polysaccharides
IC50 = 1.6 microgram/ml
Azadirachta indica
Traditional Uses: Antimalarial, fever, digestive disturbances, skin problems, general fatigue, intestinal parasites, diabetes, fungal infections, inflammatory diseases.
Active components: Flavonoids, terpenoids Polysaccharides, proteins, tannins
IC50 = 2.0 microgram/ml
Dendrosicyos socotrana
Traditional uses: Urinary retention, cystitis, symptoms of diabetes, problems with the liver and burns, constipation
Active components: Terpenoids, proteins, polysaccharides
IC50 = 2.3 microgram/ml
Based on the commonalities within the active components, the presence of tannins, polysaccharides and proteins in the aqueous extracts (Table 2), might have been responsible for the antiplasmodial (against malaria, stemming from the genus Plasmodium) activity of those products(Alshawsh).
Another plant based on West African Plants, conducted by Zirihi et al., researched 33 plant extracts and found certain plants that have been described with having antiplasmodial activity – which is what we are looking for in medications (Zirihi, G.N.).
The root extract of Rauvolfia vomitoria (IC50 = 2.5 micrograms/ml, SI = 9-10)
Important medicinal plant used for many illnesses such as neuropsychiatry disorders, jaundice, gastro-intestinal, measles, and more.
The stem bark extract of Funtumia elastica (IC50 = 3.3 micrograms/ml, SI >15)
Traditionally used for the treatment of haemorrhoids
The stem bark extract of Fagara macrophylla (IC50 = 2.3 micrograms/ml, SI = 9-12)
Has a potent “antifeedant activity” (naturally occurring substance in the plant that causes an unfavorable reaction in the organism that consumes it) against the larvae of both Spodoptera frugiperdaand Spodoptera littoralis (species of moth)
Hypothesized that these substances also make the plant have antiplasmoidial activity.

Symptoms
Earliest symptoms – make it hard to diagnose and can be overlapping with other viral or bacterial infections (Tangpukdee).
Excessive acidity in the blood and tissue fluids – Metabolic acidosis
Low blood glucose – Hypoglycemia (can also occur in pregnant women with uncomplicated malaria)
Hyperparasitemia
When more than 5% of the RBCs are infected by malaria parasites
**There are many strains of the parasite and these symptoms are from the common strains observed.**
Malaria Relapses: within P. vivax and P. ovale infections, patients who may have recovered the first time around can suffer from additional attacks – “relapses” – after months or even years without symptoms. These relapses occur due to P.vivax and P. ovale have parasites (“hypnozoites”) that can remain dormant in your liver and can reactivate later. There are treatments to reduce these relapses and should follow the treatment of the first attack (“CDC – Malaria – About Malaria – Disease”).
______________________________________________________________________________
Treatment
Maximum drug effects, as observed, were between 18-24 hrs of parasite development; once again, showing the importance of early diagnosis. Increase in parasitic metabolic activity correlated with decreased drug sensitivity.
Chloroquine (CQ)
Quinine (QN)
Artemisinin (AR)
Sodium artelinate (SA)
AR and its related compounds produced the most rapid parasitic clearance, followed by CQ and then QN. Basically, the artemisinin compounds, which behaved similarly, “had an overall broader time window of antimalarial effect than either CQ or QN ”(Terkuile, 91).

Five of Trump’s coronavirus claims fact-checked | Coronavirus pandemic News
United States President Donald Trump has repeated daring claims all through the coronavirus disaster, from fast journey bans to claims that he has “total” authority.
Whereas many of these claims have been met with reward from his supporters, they’ve been scrutinised by others.
Extra:
Whereas there may be reality to some of his claims, many seem to have factual inaccuracies. Here is a take a look at 5 of Trump’s most typical coronavirus claims:
1. ‘China journey ban’
Trump has repeatedly boasted about his January 31 order to dam journey from China, saying at a information briefing in March: “We’re the ones that gave the great response, and we’re the ones that kept China out of here. … If I didn’t do that early call on China – and nobody wanted that to happen. Everybody thought it was just unnecessary to do it”.
Whereas the order did block entry to the US from those that have been in China within the final 14 days, US residents and sure certified overseas nationals had been exempted.
Practically half one million folks had travelled to the US from China for the reason that coronavirus was introduced to worldwide well being officers in January, The New York Occasions reported on April 4.

There have been 1,300 direct flights between China and 17 US cities earlier than Trump’s order, and lots of who travelled acquired “spotty screening” upon arrival, based on the newspaper.
No less than 40,000 folks – largely US nationals – had made the journey for the reason that January 31 order, The New York Occasions mentioned.
Trump has additionally claimed the US led the world in banning journey. Nevertheless, different nations halted journey from China at roughly the identical time.
This contains Afghanistan, which restricted journey from China on January 31, the identical day as Trump. Kazakhstan stopped issuances of visas to China on January 29 and ended common air visitors to China on February 3.
North Korea appeared to shut its borders to China on January 30, based on DailyKhaleej information company.
Whereas the administration insists the journey ban saved lives, research have referred to as into query the widespread efficacy of journey bans and affirmed testing and isolation as more practical measures.
2. ‘US is a frontrunner in testing’
Throughout each day information briefings, Trump has repeatedly praised US testing efforts, claiming the nation is main the world and that “anyone who wants a test can get a test”.
However testing for COVID-19, the illness attributable to the coronavirus, was initially sluggish and the assessments had been fraught with defects.
Whereas German officers developed their very own take a look at, which was shortly adopted by World Well being Group officers in January, the US Facilities for Illness Management and Prevention (CDC) determined to develop its personal, because it has performed in earlier outbreaks.
Watch – Trump: US main the world in testing
Preliminary tips restricted assessments to those that had been exhibiting signs, partly on account of restricted testing capability on the CDC laboratory.
Throughout February, CDC knowledge reveals authorities labs processed 352 COVID-19 assessments. This averages roughly a dozen per day.
Moreover, many of the assessments had been shipped with defective reagents, a element used to trigger a essential chemical response throughout the take a look at.
CDC Director Dr Robert Redfield mentioned at a March 6 press briefing that authorities “found that, in some of the states, it didn’t work … We figured out why. I don’t consider that a fault. I consider that doing quality control. I consider that success.”
Governors in a number of states this week mentioned they’re nonetheless not in a position to give a take a look at to anybody who needs one, with many calling on the federal authorities to do extra to help their efforts.
3. ‘Complete’ authority
The Trump administration has lengthy lauded the energy of the US financial system beneath its steering. The coronavirus disaster has upended that declare, with over 16 million US employees submitting for unemployment in lower than a month and retail purchases plummeting.
The administration is pushing for a reopening of states based on a nationwide plan, however some governors are signalling their resistance.
Trump claims the authority of states pales in comparison with that of the president.  “When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total”, Trump mentioned at a press briefing on Monday.
This isn’t correct, based on the US Structure, the doc on which US legal guidelines and governance are based mostly.
Whereas the Govt Department of the US authorities – the top of which is the president – has wide-ranging powers, they aren’t “total”.
The 10th Modification of the structure provides powers not afforded to the federal authorities to the states or the folks.
“There is no light switch here, it’s more like a dimmer,” California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has unveiled his personal plan to reopen the state, mentioned.
Newsom’s workplace has said that California will reopen based on suggestions from science and well being officers.
4. Hydroxychloroquine
Trump has repeatedly said that an anti-malarial drug, hydroxychloroquine, is a doable remedy for COVID-19 that could possibly be a “game-changer”,  seemingly based mostly on anecdotal proof.
“What do you have to lose? Take it,” Trump mentioned at a press briefing on April 4.
There are presently no research that show the drug, which has been used to deal with malaria for years, is efficient in its remedy of COVID-19 signs.
A recent French study checked out 181 folks admitted to the hospital for COVID-19. About half the folks got hydroxychloroquine, however there was no statistical distinction within the dying fee in both group, the examine mentioned.
Trump’s personal staff has warned towards putting an excessive amount of religion within the drug. Dr Anthony Fauci, a number one authorities skilled on infectious ailments, mentioned “No. The reply isn’t any,” when requested if there was proof to recommend hydroxychloroquine handled or prevented COVID-19.
Fauci careworn that outcomes from different assessments are pending.
Trump has repeated that folks ought to seek the advice of with their docs earlier than taking the drug.
Outcomes from additional research are pending.
5. Obama administration response to H1N1
Trump has contrasted his administration’s response to the coronavirus with that of former President Barack Obama’s efforts to comprise the H1N1 virus, additionally referred to as swine flu.
“Sleepy Joe Biden was in charge of the H1N1 Swine Flu epidemic which killed thousands of people”, Trump tweeted on March 12, criticising the presumptive Democratic nominee for president who will run towards Trump in November.
Sleepy Joe Biden was in cost of the H1N1 Swine Flu epidemic which killed hundreds of folks. The response was one of the worst on document. Our response is one of one of the best, with quick motion of border closings & a 78% Approval Score, the very best on document. His was lowest!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 13, 2020
Trump mentioned the response was “one of the worst on record” and touted his “78 percent” approval ranking for his administration’s response.
The primary swine flu case was detected within the US in April 2009, three months after Obama took workplace.
From April 2009 to April 2010, the virus killed an estimated 12,469 US residents and contaminated over 60 million, based on CDC numbers.

From January 20 to April 15, the coronavirus has contaminated an estimated 610,000 folks within the US, killing not less than 26,000 folks.
The Obama administration’s appearing director of well being and human companies declared the virus a public well being emergency on April 26, 2009, earlier than it was declared a world pandemic.
Additionally, polling on the time confirmed roughly 67 % of the US was assured within the authorities’s response to swine flu.
Trump’s determine of 78 % is believed to have referenced polling from February, earlier than the US skilled any COVID-19 fatalities.
Biden didn’t play a outstanding position within the Obama administration’s response to the H1N1 outbreak, based on the fact-checking web site PolitiFact, although his marketing campaign’s web site does point out the Obama administration’s response to the virus as proof he may do a greater job than Trump.

Coronavirus 2020 Outbreak: Latest Updates
Tumblr media
News about the coronavirus outbreak that started in Wuhan, China, is changing rapidly. The respiratory infection, named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO), is closely related to SARS and MERS. The majority of cases are no longer in China, and the disease has been diagnosed in more than 100 other countries, including the United States. We'll provide the latest updates on cases, deaths, travel restrictions, and more here.
What is the latest news?
More States Tighten Restrictions as Coronavirus Rages New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, California, and Illinois have issued "shelter-in-place" orders that ask residents to stay home and request that non-essential businesses close.  In New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy issued a "stay-at-home" order Saturday.  “We know the virus spreads through person-to-person contact, and the best way to prevent further exposure is to limit our public interactions to only the most essential purposes. This is a time for us all to come together in one mission to ‘flatten the curve’ and slow – and eventually halt – the spread of coronavirus," Murphy said in a statement. In Connecticut, Gov. Ned Lamont asked that all non-essential businesses close starting Monday at 8 p.m. and he urged residents to stay home and work from home is possible. The order does not include services such as health care and law enforcement. Gov. J.B. Pritzker's order will require all Illinois residents to remain at home except to go to the grocery store, visit a health care professional, take walks and go to the drug store. Illinois has nearly 600 cases and five deaths.  New York's order will go into effect Sunday night. In addition to banning non-essential services, it also bans any type of gathering for any reason, among other restrictions. New York has more than 8,500 cases and more than 50 deaths. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who issued a statewide stay at home order effective at midnight March 19, that will remain in place until further notice. Essential services such as groceries, banks, laundromats, car repair, and restaurant take-out will be open. Essential state and local government functions will continue. Residents are asked to stay home except to get food, care for a relative or friend, get necessary health care or get to an essential job.  Newsom projected that up to 56% of California's residents, or about 25.5 million people, could be infected with COVID-19 in the next 8 weeks if strong measures are not taken. President Donald Trump says he doesn't see a need yet for a national "lockdown" to curb the spread of the new coronavirus and supports states making their own decisions. Pence Staff Member Tests Positive One of Vice President Mike Pence's staff members tested positive for COVID-19. Pence said he is doing well, and he did not have direct contact with the staff member. Even so, Pence and his wife will be tested Saturday afternoon. More Tests, Not Sure of Progress from “Social Distancing” Measures Yet In a White House briefing Saturday, President Trump and other officials said that testing for COVID-19 had expanded. At the same time, they said they did not know yet how much of an effect social distancing efforts are having on its spread. The nation is at the 6-day mark in the 15-day Stop the Spread effort, which asked people to not gather in groups of more than 10, avoid restaurants and bars and to and stay home when sick. Since the guidelines were issued, many states and cities have shut down bars and restaurants. "We know we are clearly having an effect but can't quantify it now,'' as that takes time to analyze said Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The administration has said it will reevaluate the measures after the 15 days are over. Pence said testing for the virus is “expanding rapidly.” More than 195,000 who have had symptoms have been tested, he said, and that number does not include county hospitals or health care labs." The country has more than 22,000 confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University. On Saturday, the FDA issued the emergency use authorization for a COVID-19 test that can give results in 45 minutes. Cepheid, the test maker, expects to roll it out by March 30. It can be used on more than 23,000 Cepheid automated systems already in use worldwide, the company said. As for who needs a test, Pence said: "If you don't have symptoms don’t do a test. It is another way we can be sure we are preserving resources that our health care workers need." Pence said they were also working to address shortages of masks and other personal protective equipment for health care workers. Deaths Jump in Italy Italian officials reported 793 additional deaths on Saturday, the largest single-day increase so far in that country, the New York Times reported. More than half of its cases and death have come in the past week. Over the past few days, Italy moved ahead of China as the country with the most deaths. The country has more than 53,000 cases and more than 4,800 deaths. The nation is under lock-down, which the army is helping to enforce.
How many people have been diagnosed with the virus, and how many have died?
According to Johns Hopkins University, there are more than 287,000 cases and nearly 12,000 deaths worldwide. For the first time since the new coronavirus outbreak began in December, China -- once the epicenter of what would become a global pandemic -- reported no new domestic cases Thursday. The National Health Commission, however, reported 34 new cases, all of which were imported from outside China. It's been 81 days since the first case was announced in Wuhan, China. There have been more than 81,000 cases in China and more than 3,200 deaths there Italy now has more deaths from the new coronavirus than any other country. Italy, China, and Iran are the countries with the most deaths. A new study from the Italian national health authority reports that more than 99% of those who have died from the coronavirus there had other medical problems. However, the study only looked at the backgrounds of 18% of the nearly 3,000 people who have died, which means of the estimated 536 cases investigated, 531 had a pre-existing condition.
How many cases of COVID-19 are in the United States?
There are nearly 20,000 cases in the U.S. of COVID-19 and more than 160 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. See a map of cases and deaths by state here.  Washington, New York, and California are the states with the most deaths in the U.S.
What travel restrictions are there?
The State Department has urged all U.S. citizens to avoid any international travel due to the global impact of the new coronavirus. If you are currently overseas, the department wants you to come home, “unless are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period,” according to a statement. “Many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders and prohibiting non-citizens from the entry with little advance notice,” the agency says. In addition, the State Department says it will not issue any new passports except for people with a “qualified life-or-death emergency and who need a passport for immediate international travel within 72 hours.” The U.S. is banning all foreign travel to the United States from most of Europe for the next 30 days beginning midnight Friday, March 13. American citizens are not included in the ban. On Saturday, Trump said he would extend the ban to include the UK and Ireland. The U.S. has also temporarily suspended non-essential travel to Mexico and Canada.
What are officials doing to help contain the virus?
Alex Azar, secretary of Health and Human Services, says there's been tremendous progress on testing for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. He says tens of thousands of tests are being done every day. But Anthony Fauci, MD, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says while testing is improving, the reality is that some people can't get tests even though they have symptoms. He says he understands and sympathizes with people who would like to get the test and can't. "We're not there yet," he says. The U.S. is also working to fast-track possible anti-viral medications to treat COVID-19. President Donald Trump said the U.S. is looking at the possible use of anti-malarial drugs called chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine for coronavirus. The drugs are also used now to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Stephen Hahn, MD, the FDA commissioner, says potential COVID-19 treatments will be checked in large clinical trials. Hahn says the FDA will also look into making some potential medications available through "compassionate use" rules, which let some sick people use drugs outside a clinical trial. Fauci was cautious about the possible use of anti-malaria drugs like hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19. The president said he felt positive about their usefulness, but Fauci says testing is needed. "We need to get data to see if it works and it's safe for people with COVID-19," he says. He says serious harmful effects from the drugs are rare when taken for malaria, but we can't be sure how people will react when they're used for another disease, like COVID-19. Hahn says vaccine trials are underway, but it could be at least 12 months until one is ready for the public. He also says the FDA is looking into the possibility of collecting blood samples from people who have recovered from COVID-19 to see if properties in them can provide immunity benefits to others. Pence also says the U.S. is also working with industry to increase the number of N-95 respirators that can be used by health workers. He says millions of these masks could now become available. click here to read more on crohnsdigest click here to read and buy Echinacea for cold and flu Read the full article

The case tally on Friday had more than tripled in the space of a week.Johannesburg: Sub-Saharan Africa recorded its second coronavirus death on Friday as infections rose in South Africa, where the government warned bluntly of a long haul in the fight against the disease.Despite stringent restrictions ranging from flight bans to school closures, countries south of the Sahara have recorded two deaths in three days, and the case tally on Friday had more than tripled in the space of a week. The central African state of Gabon announced its first fatality from coronavirus -- a 50-year-old man, whose death followed that of a 62-year-old woman in Burkina Faso on Wednesday. Both had diabetes. The total of known cases across all of Africa, compiled by AFP, stands at more than 900 and is rising fast after lagging other continents. Madagascar, with three, and Zimbabwe, with one, recorded their first cases on Friday.Health experts have issued loud warnings, for most African countries are desperately short of intensive-care units, equipment and trained staff. The Sahel state of Mali has just a single respirator.South African warningBallooning from one case two weeks ago to 202 on Friday, South Africa has the highest numbers in the subcontinent.Health Minister Zweli Mkhize pointed to established scientific projections showing that infections "ultimately can affect up to 60 percent of the population."But it "doesn't mean they will all be affected at the same time, doesn't mean that they will all have serious illness. It just means that the way the viral infection spreads, that will likely happen," Mkhize said. The virus is "going to be with us for quite a while," he warned."It's a reality we must face, but it's not a reality that says we now face an apocalypse."Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said South Africa had prevented foreign nationals who arrived Friday in 20 international flights from high-risk countries from disembarking. One of the flights was an Air China plane that landed at Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport from Shenzhen.Only South Africans were allowed to disembark while 68 Chinese nationals were refused permission to leave the aircraft. The country's flag carrier, South African Airways, suspended all regional and international flights until the end of May in line with government-imposed travel bans aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.South Africa has adopted slew of other measures, including banning gatherings of more than 100 people, shutting schools, and suspending major cultural and sporting events.Restaurants are limited to less than 50 people at time, no alcohol can be served after 6 pm, while peddling of fake news will attract a six-month jail term.Lagos challengeIn Lagos, Africa's biggest city, authorities faced an immediate challenge in implementing limits on religious gatherings decreed just a day earlier. At the Zawiyat Sofwat El-Islam mosque, in a rundown part of the city, religious leaders struggled to restrict numbers gathered outside -- eventually the gates were flung open and around a thousand worshippers entered. The service proceeded swiftly, lasting less than 30 minutes. The chief imam announced the cancellation of a special Sunday service and directed the faithful to observe it in their homes."I am here despite coronavirus to offer prayers to God. The Almighty Allah is the giver and taker of life. We should all pray and ask Him to take this strange disease from the world," said Alhaja Basirat Okeowo.Health officials in Lagos meanwhile reported cases of poisoning by chloroquine caused by self-medication, after US President Donald Trump touted the anti-malarial drug as a potential treatment for the virus.East Africa tightens measuresIn East Africa, Ethiopia, which announced three new cases Friday, taking its total to nine, said its state-carrier, the continent's biggest airline, would suspend flights to 30 countries.Ethiopian Airlines had been under pressure to follow other regional airlines, such as Kenya Airways, in suspending flights to China. Science by press release: When the story gets ahead of the science | Appradab

Science by press release: When the story gets ahead of the science | Appradab
The media’s protection of those developments has additionally been at “breakneck velocity” — as a result of discovering any solution to stall the unfold of this illness is so crucial. For instance, a number of scientists lately known as me each on and off the document to relay their optimism that a vaccine might be accessible by the start of subsequent 12 months. It could be a remarkably quick course of, on condition that vaccine improvement is usually measured in years or many years, not months. So this previous week, I took a step again to dig deeper into the research and look into the supply of this optimism. I used to be shocked at how skinny the accessible information really is in peer-reviewed medical journals.
There isn’t any query that on this atmosphere, velocity is of the essence. Scientists are scrambling to be taught in regards to the virus, the illness and methods to preserve individuals from dying. Well being officers are working onerous to place sound public well being measures in place that do not overburden society or shut down the economic system. And journalists are working ragged making an attempt to cowl all of it.
However there are additionally rising considerations — on the a part of scientists and journalists — that the research being supplied up and showcased aren’t prepared for “prime time.” Actually, many aren’t research in any respect, however subjective conclusions primarily based on information, and strategies that stay hidden and thus troublesome to validate. By no means earlier than has full and speedy transparency been so essential, and by no means earlier than has the scientific image round Covid-19 been so opaque.
What distinction does the supply make?
Press releases, pre-print papers and revealed papers all serve totally different functions, and carry totally different weight for each scientists and journalists.
A press release “is there to make your establishment, your shopper, your large identify researcher, your product, your drug firm and its merchandise, look pretty much as good as may be, hoping that that press launch will persuade journalists to put in writing about it,” Gary Schwitzer defined to Appradab. Schwitzer is a longtime well being journalist and writer, and the founding father of HealthNewsReview.org. As a result of it is written by whoever is selling the product, it is virtually by no means adverse, Schwitzer stated.
Historically, pre-print papers have been articles that researchers and lecturers put out on pre-print servers to get suggestions from their friends earlier than they submit their examine to a journal. Throughout this pandemic, the profiles of a minimum of two of them — medRxiv (pronounced med-archive), for well being sciences, and bioRxiv (pronounced bio-archive), for biology — have been tremendously elevated. “Pre-print servers are a lot, way more essential than they ever have been in Covid-related areas — in different phrases, in life sciences, in scientific medication. They simply weren’t a participant earlier than this,” Dr. Ivan Oransky instructed us. Oransky is the co-founder of RetractionWatch.org, Vice President of Editorial at Medscape, and a medical journalism professor at New York College.
A examine revealed in a reputable scientific journal is — in principle — the ultimate, full model. To get revealed right here, a examine has to bear a course of known as peer assessment. Kate Grabowski, an assistant professor within the division of pathology at Johns Hopkins College, calls the peer-review course of “a number of, unbiased units of eyes” on a paper. Whereas peer assessment is in no way fool-proof, it usually displays the experience of many individuals in a specific subject who do not essentially have a “canine within the race.”
“I believe it is simply so invaluable to selecting up potential errors which are largely unintentional, and in addition simply making the science higher. Normally once we submit papers, they’re like tough drafts, after which might get refined [several times] till they are much higher,” Grabowski stated. She described the method, to us, as “iterative.”
However the previous few months have highlighted that the highway to strong science may be stuffed with potholes, velocity bumps, blind spots and hairpin turns. If you’re not cautious, typically that highway can lead you straight off a cliff.
Listed here are a number of latest examples of the story getting forward of the science:
HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE: By now, you may have absolutely heard of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine. However, it’s possible you’ll not have recognized that on the time President Trump touted its advantages, there was a pre-print report from French researchers initially posted on-line on March 20. That study was of simply 42 sufferers, and it has been criticized for complicated information, poor protocols and never clearly accounting for all of the sufferers’ outcomes, in keeping with Oransky’s Retraction Watch web site. On April 3, the Worldwide Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy — the society that publishes the journal the paper was alleged to publish in — issued a discover saying, “the article doesn’t meet the Society’s anticipated customary.”
On Could 11, one other examine on hydroxychloroquine appeared on medRxiv. 9 days later, the examine was withdrawn. In the abstract is now a press release saying: “The authors have withdrawn this manuscript and don’t want it to be cited. Due to controversy about hydroxychloroquine and the retrospective nature of their examine, they intend to revise the manuscript after peer assessment.”
Sadly, none of this stopped the hype across the drug, resulting in critical shortages for patients utilizing it for the efficient therapy of lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. As extra thorough revealed analysis on the drug lastly began to emerge, it was proven to work neither prophylactically nor as a treatment for Covid-19, and its uncomfortable side effects had been discovered to be doubtlessly harmful to certain patients. The US authorities now has a stockpile of 63 million doses.
DEXAMETHASONE: Extra lately, examine outcomes on the generally used steroid treatment dexamethasone had been launched via press conference first, irritating researchers who wished to see the onerous information upon which these good-news findings had been primarily based. Harvard well being knowledgeable Dr. Ashish Jha tweeted: “First — it’s now a function of this pandemic that the majority findings made public by way of press launch with little information to supply context. Second — that is REALLY excellent news if it seems to be true.” The issue is that on the time we hear about these leads to the general public, we should always have the arrogance to say it’s true. Not like with hydroxychloroquine, the examine outcomes of dexamethasone seem to carry up. In sufferers on ventilators, mortality was decreased by one third, in keeping with the pre-printed, early study, which was launched the next week. However, as soon as once more, we nonetheless must see if it’s going to maintain as much as the trials of peer assessment.
MODERNA: Moderna, one of many firms within the very aggressive race to provide a vaccine in opposition to the coronavirus, set off a frenzy on Wall Street after sending out a press launch on what some thought-about hyped-up partial outcomes from Section 1 of its trial. On the time, Dr. Peter Hotez, a number one knowledgeable on infectious illness and vaccine improvement at Baylor School of Medication, instructed Appradab he discovered the outcomes of Moderna’s press launch “uninterpretable.” “It did not include any information,” he stated. “So principally — it is opinion. It was spin and opinion.” When requested by Appradab to reply, Moderna issued a press release saying: “The Firm labored cooperatively with NIAID to correctly characterize the interim information supplied by NIAID. Moderna additionally stated on its subsequent investor name that we count on NIAID and its scientific companions to publish full information from the trial at a future date.”
The Moderna vaccine has been developed in partnership with the Nationwide Institutes of Well being’s Nationwide Institute of Allergy and Infectious Illnesses, headed by Dr. Anthony Fauci. Fauci has usually cited the velocity at which the vaccine was dropped at Section 1 trials. “That’s overwhelmingly the quickest that has ever been achieved,” he said. He additional added, “Given the truth that we would have liked to do that as rapidly as doable with out sacrificing security or scientific integrity, the federal authorities partnered with a number of of those firms and stated, ‘Guess what? We’ll transfer quick and we’ll assume we’ll achieve success. And if we’re, we have saved a number of months. And if we’re not, the one factor we have misplaced is cash.’ However higher lose cash than lose lives by delaying the vaccine.”
Fauci is optimistic in regards to the potential vaccine however was additionally disenchanted by the early launch of outcomes. “I did not like that,” he told STAT News. “What we might have most popular to do, fairly frankly, is to attend till we had the info from your entire Section 1 — which I hear is sort of just like the info that they confirmed — and publish it in a good journal and present all the info. However the firm, after they seemed on the information, as all firms do, they stated, ‘Wow, that is thrilling. Let’s put out a press launch.’”
Actually, in relation to the vaccine race, regardless of all of the speak you’ll have heard from Moderna or Oxford College or “Operation Warp Pace,” or having billions of doses by the top of the 12 months, bear in mind: We have solely seen that one examine revealed in The Lancet. That is it. We have to bear in mind to mood our hopes and enthusiasm with the info we have now.
I embody these examples as a result of they present how totally different components of the method can break down.
“Attempting to do science by press launch, with out backing it up, both with a standard journal or a preprint … has universally led to misunderstanding and has no place in science. The biotechs are doing it as a result of they’re writing for his or her shareholders, they’re writing for his or her buyers, however it’s being achieved in a manner that is oblivious to its public well being impression and must cease,” Hotez stated.
Put one other manner by pissed off analysis scientist James Heathers in a tweet: “Science by press launch is simply guarantees with numbers sprinkled on it. GIVE. US. THE. GODDAMN. PAPER.”
Whiplash for shoppers of well being information
When this occurs — and particularly when errors are revealed or papers are retracted — public belief is eroded and folks start to doubt science.
“It is like whiplash,” Oransky stated. “I would be actually confused.”
However these days that whiplash has turn into virtually inevitable as a result of that forwards and backwards is how science strikes ahead on this Covid lifestyle.
Including to the whiplash and confusion is simply the sheer variety of research popping out. In keeping with Grabowski, who primarily based her estimate on the NIH’s iSearch COVID-19 Portfolio, roughly 35,000 articles have been amassed so far on the subject — and so they preserve coming.
To get a deal with on all of them, Grabowski heads up a workforce of about 50 Johns Hopkins College researchers on the Novel Coronavirus Analysis Compendium, which curates and evaluations rising analysis. She estimates they display between 1,500 and a pair of,000 articles per week, and have checked out greater than 10,000 of them complete. As you would possibly count on, some are rubbish and a few are gems.
“I might say there’s positively some wonderful research which are being carried out beneath a extremely speedy timeframe,” Grabowski stated. “It is actually superb to see science shifting at this tempo. I do not suppose we have ever seen something like this earlier than.”
Purchaser and vendor beware
All of the consultants stated it’s nice information that a lot analysis is being achieved, even though a lot of the work is rising by way of press releases and pre-prints.
“The truth that scientists are getting work on the market earlier in order that different scientists can pore over it and we are able to possibly be taught issues extra rapidly — that is a superb factor,” Oransky stated. “The truth that we’re treating all of it equally as if it is all been … topic to the identical stage of scrutiny — that is the issue.”
Schwitzer cautions journalists and those that disseminate data to take the time to do it proper. “Simply reminding individuals to decelerate. A lot of what we’re doing, reporting breathlessly at breakneck velocity, does not have to be reported restlessly at breakneck velocity,” he stated, including, “Phrases matter and the info matter.”
So, what does this all imply for you? “I believe that somebody studying, viewing, watching, listening ought to by no means make any choices primarily based on a single report they learn, whether or not it is a examine or a information report on a examine,” Oransky stated. “Significantly if that information report does not put into context every part that is come earlier than and does not clarify what we nonetheless do not know.”
Appradab’s Andrea Kane and Nadia Kounang contributed to this report.

The Seattle-based company reported total gross bookings of $17.89 billion, including a decline of as much as 90% in the second half of March as the pandemic took hold. Revenue fell 15% to $2.21 billion, its first quarterly drop in eight years.
Turkey Declares #MissionAccomplished (4:57 p.m. NY)
The communications director for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the country’s outbreak has been contained. Turkey had 152,587 confirmed coronavirus cases, ninth-highest in the world, as of Wednesday.
“Turkey under Recep Tayyip Erdogan invested billions in healthcare infrastructure, let top scientists devise a strategy and treated all COVID-19 patients for free,” Fahrettin Altun said in a Twitter post. “The result? Our recovery rate is almost 75 percent. The pandemic has been contained. #MissionAccomplished.”
Disney, Universal to Submit Florida Reopening Plans (4:25 p.m. NY)
Walt Disney Co., Comcast Corp.’s Universal Studios and SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. are taking another step toward reopening their massive theme parks in Orlando, Florida.
The operators will begin submitting their plans to a reopening task force on Thursday, a spokesperson for Florida’s Orange County said in an email. Universal is slated to make its presentation on Thursday, with the others coming at a later date.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said last week that theme-park operators could begin reopening once they submit plans and win approval from local authorities. Jerry Demings, the mayor of Orange County, later said it will still likely be June or afterward before the resorts completely reopen.
Ohio Unemployed Data Exposed (4:15 p.m. NY)
Ohio said that “about two dozen” Pandemic Unemployment Assistance applicants were apparently able to view the personal data, including social security numbers of the more than 100,000 other applicants. The state has hired Deloitte consultants to clean up the mess and give free credit monitoring to about 130,000 people who might have been impacted.
The access to others data was “accidental” and that there is “no evidence of any widespread data compromise” from the mistake, Ohio’s Department of Job and Family Services said.
On Sunday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s office disclosed that a glitch in a newly launched state system for processing unemployment claims for gig workers had publicly exposed personal information.
U.S. Cases Rise 1.3% (4 p.m. NY)
Coronavirus cases in the U.S. increased 1.3% as compared to the same time yesterday to 1.54 million, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg News. That’s less than Tuesday’s 1.6% rate, which was on par with the average of the past seven days. Deaths rose 1.6% to 92,645.
New York cases rose 0.4% to 354,370, according to the state’s health department. That was below the average daily increase of 0.6% over the past week.
New Jersey reached 150,399 cases after adding 1,670, a 0.9% increase that matched the rate of the past seven days, according to Governor Phil Murphy. The death toll reached 10,747 with 168 new fatalities, the sixth-straight day of fewer than 200.
Florida reported 47,471 cases, up 1.1% from a day earlier, according to the state’s health department. That compared with an average increase of 1.6% in the previous seven days. Deaths rose 1% to 2,096.
California added 2,262 cases, a 2.8% jump, for a total of 84,057. There were 102 daily deaths, the most in four weeks.
Texas cases climbed 2.8%, in line with its average over the past seven days, to 51,323.

Important Measures taken, opportunities & revamp required in India amid COVID-19 & post lockdown
We face the greatest challenge at the start of the millennia right here right now. These are very challenging times & needs very strong & resonating decisions to ride the waves of pessimism & uncertainty to overcome collectively. The mood of the business & the Govt. is worry some; of course there is a reason to be so however there is no ESCAPADE from this crisis.
This crisis has certainly forced most of us to see at things in a different way & going forward Digitization of Businesses & processes will even be more critical & mandatory for the Government as well as Corporates, MSME’s & small Businesses.
I have few suggestions which the Government may consider implementing in the short & long term basis to revive the business sentiments & minimize job losses any further across Industry
Confirmed Tax Breaks for a period of 6 Months or at least deferred Tax payments – Agriculture, Manufacturing & Services
Revise the interest on the late payment charges on direct & indirect tax deposits- burdened industry will have a respite
Government should revise the incentives or sops for promoting Exports rather than curbing during this pandemic as it opens up bigger opportunities for Indian manufacturers in the overseas market- Putting a carpet ban on the exports of Masks, Sanitizers, PPE or Coveralls etc. is a classic example of short sightedness of the Policy makers
Set up product wise special manufacturing zones across India and incentivize the investing company by granting approvals through single window within a defined time period and with a conditionality of engaging min 40-50% work force from the local area or vicinity- to minimize the migration of skilled and unskilled work force from one region of India to the other
Spending on R&D has to be boosted under the various industry verticals where even the private players has to mandatorily allocate budget and provision for R&D to boost research- This can enhance quality of products & services across the board
Set up specialized procurement and distribution hubs- through PPP mode and enhance the storage capacities across the board for different industry verticals & product categories
The Logistics division under the Min of commerce should be entrusted with the task of setting up a ONE STOP web based system for Logistics and REAL time Inventory management with provisioning and different interfaces for Stakeholders
Develop the coastal areas further with the state of the art warehouses and distribution points for coastal movement of goods & relax the coastal movement policies under the Indian Customs Act and Maritime Acts-This can considerably engage the local population in terms of job opportunities & reducing the transportation cost considerably
Create a Robust IT platform and further leverage the potential of Digital India programme by allowing more investments in innovation and digitization processes- Target should be to achieve 100% migration towards e-Governance
Thrusting more on Education, Services Sector, Agriculture, Healthcare, Pure Manufacturing not  just Assembly
IT networking for Agriculture based activities
Promote Technological Innovation in Agricultural production and cultivation methodology
Setting up of specialized Manufacturing hubs with Geographically spatial distribution industry & vertical wise- e.g. Pharmaceutical companies in Baddi/Solan (HP), Pant Nagar/Rudrapur (Uttarakhand), Mining in Jharkhand, Agri Tech in Bihar & West Bengal & North East India, Heavy Manufacturing in Gujarat/Maha/TN, Cement in Chattisgarh/MP, Warehousing clusters near Coastal areas
Views & Suggestions Authored by- Ravi Shekhar Jha (Personal Views)
‘Direct Marketing’ helps decongest Mandis and facilitates timely marketing of farm produce during lockdown
Government of India has been making concerted efforts to facilitate farmers in direct marketing and assure better returns.  At the same time the Department issued advisories to maintain social distancing in the mandis to prevent the spread of Corona Virus in the wake of COVID19 pandemic. The States have been requested to promote the concept of ‘Direct marketing’ to facilitate farmers/ group of farmers/FPOs/ Cooperatives in selling their produce to bulk buyers/big retailers/processors etc.
The Union Agriculture Minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar sent a letter on 16th April, 2020 to the Chief Ministers of States reiterating the need for direct marketing through Cooperatives/ Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) etc and encouraged all the stakeholders and farmers to adopt this process. The Department also issued an advisory to the States to promote direct marketing without insisting for licensing procedures and facilitate the farmers in timely marketing of farm produce.
In order to decongest wholesale markets & to boost the supply chain, following two modules under National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) have been introduced:
FPO Module: FPOs can directly trade with e-NAM portal. They can upload produce details from collection centers with picture/quality parameter and avail the bidding facility without physically reaching to the mandis.
Warehouse Based Trading Module: Farmers can sell their produce from Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority (WDRA) registered warehouses notified as deemed market, and do not physically bring the produce to the nearest mandis.
Various States have adopted Direct Marketing and taken several measures:
Karnataka exempted Cooperative Institutions and FPOs in the State for engaging in wholesale trade of agricultural produce outside the market yards;
Tamil Nadu exempted market fee on all notified agricultural produce;
Uttar Pradesh allowed trading in e-NAM platform from  farm  gate  and promoted  issuance of unified licence to processors  for direct purchase from farmers and  also allowed FPOs to undertake procurement operations of wheat;
Rajasthan allowed direct marketing by traders, processors  and  FPOs. In addition to that, Primary Agriculture Credit Societies (PACS)/Large Area Multi-purpose Cooperative Societies (LAMPS) in Rajasthan have been declared as deemed markets.
Apart from Individuals, firms, and processing units, Madhya Pradesh  has allowed to set up private purchase centres outside the market–yard to purchase directly from farmers with an application fee of Rs. 500/- only.
Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Gujarat have also allowed direct marketing without requirement of any licence.
Uttarakhand has declared Warehouse/Cold storage and Processing plants as sub-mandis.
Uttar Pradesh Government has recently relaxed the rules and norms for declaring warehouses/ cold storages as Market-yards.
Impact of Direct Marketing:
Rajasthan has issued more than 1,100 direct marketing licences to processors during lockdown period wherein farmers have already started selling directly to the processors.  Out of more than 550 PACS declared as market-yards in rural areas, 150 PACS have become functional for direct marketing and village traders are performing trade transactions successfully.
Due to market fee waiver in Tamil Nadu, it was observed that traders have preferred to buy the produce from farmers from their farm gate/ villages.
In Uttar Pradesh direct linkages have been established by FPOs with farmers and traders thereby supplying their produce to consumers in cities which saved wastages and directly benefitted the farmers. Further, the State has facilitated in establishing linkages with FPOs and Zomato Food Delivery App thereby ensuring smooth distribution of veggies to consumers.
As per the report received from the States, the Direct Marketing has facilitated the famers groups, FPOs, Cooperatives and all the stakeholders in effective and timely marketing of farm produce.

CSIR-IICT initiatives to reduce dependency for APIs and drug intermediates
Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates are the key components of any drug that produces the intended effects. India is largely depended especially on China for supply of APIs and drug intermediates. Now Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, is collaborating with another Hyderabad-based integrated pharmaceutical company, LAXAI Life Sciences, to develop and manufacture APIs and drug intermediates. The initiative may help in reducing the dependency of the Indian pharmaceutical sector on Chinese imports of these ingredients.
IICT, a laboratory under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is working with LAXAI for synthesis of drugs being used in the fight against the Corona Virus.  The collaboration will primarily focus on Umifenovir, Remdesivir and a key intermediate of Hydroxy Chloroquine (HCQ).
India, one of the largest producers of anti-malarial drug HCQ, has seen a spurt in demand in the recent weeks. India has sent HCQ to over 50 countries over the last few days, including the United States. The collaboration will result in a cost-effective process with minimal dependency on China for key raw materials. In addition, Remdesivir, which has been previously administered to Ebola virus patients, is currently under clinical trials to evaluate efficacy and safety against COVID -19.
Realizing that drug security and undisrupted access to essential medicines are critical for public health, the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, has approved a special package for promotion of bulk drug manufacturing in India and reduction of our dependence on China.
LAXAI Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. was established in the year 2007, with a vision to accelerate the discovery chemistry campaign of global pharmaceutical companies. Today LAXAI has grown into an integrated pharmaceutical company with presence in API / formulation development as well as API manufacturing.
The collaboration will use the know-how for commercial manufacturing of the products. LAXAI Life Sciences shall be one of the first few to commercialize these products.  The manufacturing of these APIs and intermediates will be taken up at U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA)/Good manufacturing practice (GMP) approved plants held by LAXAI through its subsidiary, Therapiva Private Limited.

Daily Current Affairs 08th April 2020
Today’s  Important  Topic’s  For UPSC Preparation
1.  INDIA LIFTS BAN ON EXPORT OF HYDROXYCLOROQUINE.2. OPPOSITION SLAMS DRUG EXPORT.3. KERALA-KARNATAKA BORDER ROW SORTED OUT, CENTRE INFORMS SC.4. LOSS OF SMELL MAY BE LINKED TO CELLS: STUDY. 5. SBI CUTS MCLR BY 35BPS. 6. ECONOMY TO CONTRACT 4.5% IN FOURTH QUARTER, SAYS ICRA.
INDIA LIFTS BAN ON EXPORT OF HYDROXYCLOROQUINEWhat is hydroxychloroquine and what is it used for?
It is an antimalarial drug option, considered less toxic than chloroquine, and prescribed in certain cases.
Doctors also prescribe hydroxychloroquine for patients of rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
Who makes this drug in India?
Hydroxychloroquine had a market size of only around Rs 152.80 crore in the 12 months ended February 2020, according to pharmaceutical market research firm AIOCD Awacs PharmaTrac.
However, several countries source the drug from India.
Mumbai-headquartered Ipca Laboratories had nearly 82% of the market, with its brands HCQS and HYQ.
Around 80% of the volumes produced by Ipca are exported.
Ahmedabad-headquartered Cadila Healthcare (Zydus Cadila) prepares the brand Zy Q, with 8% of the market.
Wallace Pharmaceuticals (OXCQ), Torrent Pharmaceuticals (HQTOR) and Overseas Healthcare Pvt Ltd (CARTIQUIN) have smaller shares.
Why has the COVID-19 outbreak spotlighted hydroxychloroquine?
In a study last month in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents (IJAA), French scientists reported: Twenty cases were treated and showed a significant reduction of the viral carriage.
Compared to controls, and much lower average carrying duration than reported of untreated patients in the literature.
Azithromycin (an antibiotic) added to hydroxychloroquine was significantly more efficient for virus elimination.
The study was flagged as being too small to draw a definitive conclusion.
However, by March 21, Trump had begun to call the drug a “game changer”, and has since been pushing it.
At the end of last month, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) issued an advisory recommending the use of hydroxychloroquine in asymptomatic healthcare workers treating COVID-19 patients.
And also allowed doctors to prescribe it for household contacts of confirmed COVID-19 patients.
However, the government has stressed that the drug can only be used in COVID-19 treatment on prescription, and that it should not instill a sense of “false security”.
Since when has India stopped exporting the drug?
The US has been looking to procure the drug for emergency use.
On March 21, Ipca told stock exchanges here that the US Food and Drug Administration had “made exception” to its import alert against the company so that it could get stocks.
India decided to ban exports of the drug on April 4. On Tuesday, the government decided to ease the ban.
Is hydroxychloroquine actually effective?
Two large trials are under way on the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine, and even chloroquine, in COVID-19 treatment.
In the World Health Organization (WHO) solidarity trial, of which India is a part, clinicians worldwide are to follow a common protocol to treat patients with hydroxychloroquine.
The second is the chloroquine accelerator trial, largely funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
As of now, the jury is still out on how effective these drugs can be against the virus, according to virologist and CEO of the Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance Dr Shahid Jameel.
Both of these are testing very large numbers of patients according to the random testing protocol used to test medicines.
The results of those trials are not available yet.
If people in high exposure situations such as health workers are taking hydroxychloroquine/chloroquine as a preventive measure in limited ways, it may be fine.
But, it is not all right for the general public to go around popping these drugs hoping that they will be protected.
They may not be protected, but they will definitely cause themselves some harm.
Why in News?
India on Tuesday announced that it had rescinded its earlier ban on the export of malaria drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ).
In view of the humanitarian aspects of the pandemic, it has been decided that India would licence paracetamol and HCQ in appropriate quantities to all our neighbouring countries who are dependent on our capabilities.
We will also be supplying these essential drugs to some nations that have been particularly badly affected by the pandemic.
The MEA announcement came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said that India could invite “retaliation” if it withheld supplies of HCQ, for which the U.S., Brazil and other countries have already placed advance orders.
OPPOSITION SLAMS DRUG EXPORT
The Opposition criticised the Union government for the quick capitulation in the face of a veiled threat by U.S. President Donald Trump on the ban on export of anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine.
The government lifted the ban within hours of Mr. Trump’s comments.
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to argue that Indians have the first right over life-saving medicines during the coronavirus pandemic.
Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that though the Congress valued and cherished India’s friendship with the U.S., it saw Mr. Trump’s language as ‘unwarranted’.
Allowing the export of hydroxychloroquine by bowing down before a foreign power cannot be in national interest, he said.
The government should think deeply about the export of essential medicines as our citizens have the first right over them.
Let down India: Yechury
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the statement by the U.S. President was completely unacceptable.
But Modi govt has succumbed to the threat by allowing the export.
That this happened after an expensive gala was organised for him by Modi, instead of preparing to contain Covid-19, shows how this govt has let down India.
Senior TMC leader and Lok Sabha member Saugata Roy said that while the humanitarian gesture made by the Indian government was welcome, it should have raised concern over the language used by Mr. Trump.
KERALA-KARNATAKA BORDER ROW SORTED OUT, CENTRE INFORMS SC
The Supreme Court on Tuesday disposed of a bunch of petitions concerning the Kerala-Karnataka border sealing case after the Union government informed that a consensus had been worked out to allow patients requiring urgent medical treatment to cross the Talapadi border and access hospitals in Mangaluru.
Appearing before a Bench led by Chief Justice of India Sharad A. Bobde, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said a meeting was held among the Union Home Secretary and the Chief Secretaries of the States to amicably resolve the crisis.
An agreement had been reached on the parameters and protocol for allowing patients into Karnataka.
On April 3, the court ordered the Centre, Kerala and Karnataka to confer immediately and “formulate parameters for passage of patients for urgent medical treatment at the border at Talapadi”.
The court then listed the case on April 7.
The April 3 order was based on petitions highlighting how Karnataka had enforced a blockade which, the court was informed, had resulted in deaths as ambulances bound for Mangaluru were not being permitted to cross the border.
The petitions asked the court to intervene to facilitate free movement of vehicles carrying persons who need urgent medical treatment across the border.
Karnataka argued that the blockade was put in place in the interest of public health.
The situation regarding COVID-19 was “really dire”.
Kerala was the “worst-affected” State in the country, with nearly 194 cases.
In this, Kasaragod, adjoining Karnataka, was the “worst-affected” district of Kerala with over 100 positive cases, it said.
LOSS OF SMELL MAY BE LINKED TO CELLS: STUDY
Multiple reports have surfaced, primarily from Europe and the United States, from physicians and ear, nose and throat specialists, of COVID-19 patients complaining of an inability to smell — or anosmia.
However, it is not clear whether neurons in the brain that are responsible for recognising various odours are damaged, or whether other cells may be involved.
Researchers at Delhi’s Indrapastha Institute of Information Technology report in the study that is still being peer-reviewed but available as a public preprint.
It is not neurons but a class of cells in the upper regions of the nasal cavity that may be involved: these are called sustentacular cells and horizontal basal cells.
Crucially, both are not directly involved in helping us smell, but nourish and support the cells that help us do, and so the virus may be inflicting an indirect attack on the olfactory sensory cells.
While research on this aspect of the disease is emerging, studies say the loss of smell is different from diminished smell or a lack of perceiving flavour in food when one is afflicted with a cold or stuffy nose.
The coronavirus has spike proteins that bind to ACE 2 receptors on human cells and the enzyme’s presence is a proxy to revealing the signature of the virus in the body’s cells.
Clinical Symptoms:
Research so far suggests that it take between 5-14 days for clinical symptoms of the virus — dry cough, laboured breathing and fever — to show and unless this manifested, those infected are likely to continue socialising and spreading the virus.
Because the loss of smell surfaces much earlier, anyone who does not feel sick but registers a significant inability to smell could self-isolate.
A questionnaire could be used via an app, for users to check or report these systems to a doctor.
An analysis by a team at King’s College London showed that 59% of COVID-19 positive patients reported a loss of smell and taste, compared with only 18% of those who tested negative for the disease.
These results were much stronger in predicting a positive COVID-19 diagnosis than self-reported fever.
SBI CUTS MCLR BY 35BPSWhat is marginal cost of funds-based lending rate or MCLR?
The RBI introduced the MCLR methodology for fixing interest rates from 1 April 2016.
It replaced the base rate structure, which had been in place since July 2010.
The marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) is the minimum interest rate that a bank can lend at.
MCLR is a tenor-linked internal benchmark, which means the rate is determined internally by the bank depending on the period left for the repayment of a loan.
MCLR is closely linked to the actual deposit rates and is calculated based on four components:
(a)            The marginal cost of funds,
(b)           Negative carry on account of cash reserve ratio,
(c)            Operating costs and
(d)           Tenor premium.
Under the MCLR regime, banks are free to offer all categories of loans on fixed or floating interest rates.
The actual lending rates for loans of different categories and tenors are determined by adding the components of spread to MCLR.
Therefore, the bank cannot lend at a rate lower than MCLR of a particular maturity, for all loans linked to that benchmark.
Fixed-rate loans with tenors of up to three years are also priced according to MCLR.
Banks review and publish MCLR of different maturities, every month.
Certain loan rates, like that of fixed-rate loans with tenors above three years and special loan schemes offered by the government, are not linked to MCLR. Read more..

Aap chronology samajhiye: How coronavirus has changed the world in just 3 months
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/aap-chronology-samajhiye-how-coronavirus-has-changed-the-world-in-just-3-months/
Aap chronology samajhiye: How coronavirus has changed the world in just 3 months
In the three months since China first came across a new coronavirus, the world has been plunged into turmoil.
A pandemic has been declared, schools and shops from New York to New Delhi shuttered, half the global population is confined in some form, while governments have scrambled to announce massive aid packages amid recession fears.
Here is a look back at the dramatic first months of 2020:
A NEW CORONAVIRUS STRAIN
On January 8, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) says cases of pneumonia reported since December in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, could be due to a new coronavirus strain.
In December, 59 people are officially diagnosed with the illness, which can cause serious respiratory problems. The confirmed cases include several employees from a Wuhan market selling live animals for food.
SPECTRE OF SARS
The new virus reignites grim memories of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), another coronavirus that hit mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003, killing nearly 800 people in some 30 countries.
A first virus death is announced on January 11 in China and the epidemic spreads across provinces, and then beyond the borders of the mainland.
France is the first country to report a case in Europe, at the end of January. The early infections are found in people either from China or who have recently returned from there.
The illness, at this stage generally described as a form of flu, appears particularly dangerous for older or more vulnerable people.
CHINA PROVINCE UNDER LOCKDOWN
In the hope of slowing the spread of the epidemic, Chinese authorities take the radical step of confinement, first locking down the city of Wuhan and then, on January 25, the whole of Hubei province, cutting off its 56 million people from the rest of the world.
Other countries begin repatriating their citizens and putting them under quarantine on arrival home.
At the end of January, with almost 6,000 cases officially recorded in mainland China, the number of infections from the new coronavirus overtakes that of SARS.
The WHO declares a global health emergency, but it stops short of recommending trade and travel restrictions.
TOURISTS BLOCKED
Nevertheless, international airlines begin reducing their flights to mainland China and tourist groups start postponing holidays.
Thousands of people are stuck on several cruise liners after cases are detected on board. More than 3,700 are quarantined from February 5 on a ship off Japan’s coast and more than 700 infections emerge among the passengers and crew in a few weeks.
SCALY MAMMAL LINK?
Early February researchers in China identify the pangolin, a scaly endangered mammal, as the potential link that facilitated the spread of the virus from bats to humans.
When Li Wenliang, a 34-year-old ophthalmologist in Wuhan succumbs to the disease, his death unleashes a wave of anger in China at authorities.
The doctor was among a group of people who sounded the alarm about the virus in late December, only to be reprimanded and censored by the authorities in Hubei province.
The US raises criticisms over what it calls a lack of transparency from China in its response to the outbreak, but the WHO defends Beijing, listing the ways it has collaborated with the international community.
Although much remains unknown about the new coronavirus, the disease gets a new name: “COVID-19”.
ECONOMIC REPURCUSSIONS
The first death outside Asia is announced on February 15, in France.
Around the world, concerns are raised about the economic repercussions, as international meetings and sports competitions are progressively cancelled.
On March 24, the International Olympic Committee takes the historic decision to postpone the Summer Games in Tokyo to 2021 instead.
By the end of February, the number of infections is rising, notably in Italy, South Korea and Iran. Chinese authorities believe the epidemic is reaching a peak on the mainland.
WORLD REACTION
On March 6, the number of reported cases worldwide tops 100,000.
Hard-hit Italy is the first country after China to impose strict confinement measures on its population.
Accounts from Italian medical staff raise concerns as they describe increasing numbers of sick people needing treatment, shortages in medical equipment and overwhelmed hospital wards.
On March 11, the WHO declares COVID-19 a “pandemic” and urges the world to take action.
The US begins sealing its borders to foreign visitors from Europe.
World stock markets register historic losses while governments and central banks announce massive aid packages.
Widespread panic causes stockpiling and long queues at supermarkets.
HALF OF HUMANITY CONFINED
The WHO declares Europe the new virus epicentre and through the month of March, Spain, France and Britain imposed their own confinement measures.
Several countries worldwide follow with various forms of lockdown, while the number of deaths continues to rise and overstretched hospitals struggle to cope.
By April 2, half of the world’s population is called on or obliged by their authorities to stay at home.
Curfews and states of emergency multiply in various countries, sparking fears over the erosion of civil liberties.
Flights are grounded, schools and universities are shuttered, and working from home is the new norm.
In Madrid, an ice rink is turned into a morgue. In New York, emergency field hospitals are opened in Central Park.
In poor, overcrowded neighbourhoods, limiting movement proves difficult to enforce and some officials use violence and gunfire to disperse crowds.
SHORTAGES AND CONTROVERSIES
Most countries experience shortages of masks and other protective medical equipment, sparking competition for resources.
There are worries too of intensive care units being overcrowded, and shortages of drugs and medical staff.
While most countries reserve testing for patients showing severe symptoms, South Korea, Germany and Singapore opt for widespread testing and avoid imposing strict containment measures.
South Korea also tracks cases through the use of technology, which is more difficult to employ in countries with stricter privacy laws.
As the hunt for a vaccine goes on — unlikely to be available before at least a year — several countries experiment with the use of anti-malarial drugs such as chloroquine, but experts urge caution until bigger trials validate their effectiveness.
VIRUS VICTIMS
While most of those infected with the virus recover, the illness can cause serious pulmonary complications, even in young patients.
Children had been considered safe from the more serious conditions, but rare cases of adolescent deaths in France, Belgium and Britain spark concern. Two babies die from COVID-19 in the US.
Retirement homes are hit hard as the virus sweeps through.
Among the famous names that start appearing on the list of deaths is the 86-year-old Afro-jazz legend Manu Dibango.
And those infected include British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who remained in charge of the government despite being admitted to hospital for tests after suffering “persistent symptoms”, the heir to the British throne Prince Charles, and Hollywood actor Tom Hanks, who has now recovered.
WORST CRISIS SINCE 1945
The coronavirus pandemic is the worst global crisis since World War II, the UN says at the end of March. It could trigger conflicts around the world and an economic recession “that probably has no parallel in the recent past”.
World powers promise billions of dollars to restart the world economy, which has been mostly brought to a standstill, while unemployment claims in the US soar to new records.
Hubei province and its capital Wuhan begin to open up after a months-long lockdown, but Italy, the country with the biggest death toll, tops 10,000 fatalities at the end of March, shortly followed by the same in Spain.
A quarter of global infections are in the US.
At the start of April, as the world toll tops more than a million infections and 60,000 dead, questions are raised over what will come next.
Could there be a second wave of infections, when restrictions are lifted? Has China minimised its official death toll of more than 3,000, as claims the US? What of the economic impact, and that on democracies worldwide?

The best advice I can offer to someone who is facing a challenge they feel is insurmountable, is to take some time and think about all the things they’ve overcome in the past. Even your small wins are proof that you are far more capable, then you give yourself credit for. Tap into your faith & remind yourself that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains!

I handmake jewelry and started my store 6 months ago today on Etsy. I also have a huge passion for beauty, which I really dove into during a dark time of depression and it turned into a beautiful hobby that has opened several doors. I wasn’t happy with my job after 8 years, I made very good money but I was at such a low place I knew I had to change something, so I walked away, into the unknown but I’m better for it. I would tell anyone who is struggling to find something that makes you happy, that focuses your mind at the task at hand, rather that is a hobby or a potential career opportunity you make for yourself. When I started my Etsy I had no idea what I was doing but I taught myself and constantly look for ways to improve and for a 6 month old shop I’ve been pretty successful. If you are feeling defeated or that things are too hard that is life, nothing is easy. we all have our struggles, highs and lows and that we have to do our best to enjoy and take advantage of the highs so that we can navigate ourselves through the lows because they will happen. There is always light at the end of the tunnel and how quick you get there depends on how determined you are to succeed. What we put into the world is what we get out of it.

My best advice for someone who feels their challenge is insurmountable is to examine the facts vs. the feelings.  Ask yourself if you simply “feel” that way or if it is a “fact” that the challenge is insurmountable.  Can you say that it is 100% true that the challenge is insurmountable.  I can assure you that 99% of the time that is not true.  We simply feel that way & we tend to allow how we feel about the circumstances dictate our decisions.  We feel like the road ahead will be hard, filled with mountains, and very unclear.  However, the fact is that we only feel that way because the path ahead is new to us.  The fact is that it’s not insurmountable, and that the only thing we need to do is take the NEXT STEP in front of us. The path will appear as you keep taking those next steps. Trust the facts vs. your feelings!

Think back to another time you had an impossible goal— a really large challenge that someway, somehow you made it through. Thinking back to other tough times will encourage your spirit to know that you can press through and will be able to stand withstand the challenge you’re facing now.

Take it on by bit by, day by day. Once you break down a big problem into little ones things get a little less overwhelming, at least in my experience.

We all can feel that way from time to time! We have both openly shared our struggles with anxiety, motherhood and business. Our best advice is not to be afraid to reach out for help, whether that’s seeking counsel from friends or family, a trusted industry peer or even speaking to a counselor or doctor. Try and break down the challenge into much smaller manageable tasks or steps and know that this too shall pass!

The best advice I have for someone who’s facing a challenge that feels insurmountable is to talk to someone they trust and respect about the situation.  Never underestimate the value of someone else’s insights and experience to help you put things into perspective.  And know that nothing is ever really insurmountable – you just have to rationally figure out how to navigate through it!

I think that it’s important to realize and we aware that we are going to go through challenges throughout life, and some are going to be bigger than others. It’s something we have to learn how to accept. Life isn’t supposed to be a straight paved road w/ no obstacles. Every bump in the road is there to reach a lesson and to help us grow as humans. So when facing a challenge we feel is to big for us, think about the end results! Regardless of how it goes, it was placed in our life for a reason. So don’t give up!

I would tell that individual first and foremost that nothing is insurmountable. If you keep limiting yourself & emitting vibes that say this challenge is insurmountable— then it most definitely will be! The more emphasis the universe will put on what you can not accomplish. You will be standing in your own way at that point. Change up your mindset. Change up your habits. If you have to go back to the drawing board a thousand times. Who cares?! Do it! The goal is to progress further than where you were before. The little successes add up to the biggest triumphs. So go hard or go home!

The best advice I would give to someone who is facing a challenge that is insurmountable, is to turn to their loved ones. When I’m struggling with anything, I turn to family, friends, and my spouse. Being a mom of two young children, running a business and doing all of my mom/wife duties, gets to be overwhelming at times. I’ve learned that no matter how well you plan, and how well you execute your plan, you will always have setbacks. I take these setbacks as learning lessons and always ask for help if I need it. Always remind yourself that nothing will last forever, no matter how bad things may seem! Be confident, Stay Positive, remember to laugh, give hugs and PRAY! This has always helped me get through my crazy days and keep life less stressful and fun!

My father always taught us to “be the river”. My interpretation of that continues to evolve but I do know a river doesn’t stop running because a stone, or even a mountain, gets in its way. It either finds a way around or creates an entirely new path by withering down the obstacle with its persistency. When a storm comes, it uses the downpour as fuel to push harder. Even a drought doesn’t last always – the river is patient and waits to be replenished by the source that feeds it. Stay the course, be the river.
