Copenhagen Cowboy (TV Series) Review | Venice Film Festival 2022 | Exclusively on Netflix
Director Nicolas Winding Refn has found a way to turn Copenhagen Cowboy into his usual format of a feature-length film. It is the rare movie-as-miniseries that feels compatible with the form. The return to his native Denmark for the first time since the Pusher series finds the pushing his foot on the accelerator across the six episodes of his Netflix series. Refn spreads out his sensory overload giving all the threatening and boldness ample space to breathe. It can be repetitive, yes, but never monotonous.
Critics frequently complain about Refn’s work prioritizing style over substance that is the films become more supportive than storytelling. The film Copenhagen Cowboy avoids this by leaning into mythology-making. Conventional plotting is still scant in the series, but at least there’s a little bit more to hang onto here through what Refn suggests. Even though the normal profession suggests an extract of the prototypes of the American west to Denmark, the series recalls the folklore of Japanese samurai stories.

BRIEF STORY
The six-episode story centers around a woman who dives into the criminal underworld of Denmark in search of revenge. “Copenhagen Cowboy” revolves around a young heroine called Miu (Angela Bundalovic). After a lifetime of slavery and on the verge of a new beginning, she crosses the hostile landscape of the eponymous city’s criminal netherworld. Searching for justice and enacting vengeance, she encounters her opponent, Rakel, as they embark on a journey through the natural and the supernatural.
The past ultimately transforms and defines their future, as the two women discover they are not alone, they are many. The mysterious Miu arrives in Copenhagen and quickly becomes a skilled samurai without a master. Each episode takes Miu deeper and darker into the city’s sordid underbelly in pursuit of justice. These are not necessarily self-contained chapters as Miu’s network begins to converge over time, but it’s the rough frequency at which she gains a new employer or interest to serve.

The Mole: Infiltrating North Korea (2023)
In 2010, Danish director Mads Brügger received an email from a stranger who had seen a documentary he had made about North Korea. He asked if Mads would be interested in making a new film about his quest to become a member of his local North Korean ‘friendship’ association in Denmark to enable him to travel to Pyongyang undercover. There are Korean Friendship Associations (KFA) in countries around the world, and their members, bizarrely, are devoted to the glorification of the world’s last totalitarian communist dictatorship. In this first of two extraordinary episodes, the stranger becomes a mole and rises through the ranks of the KFA, tunnelling his way ‘undercover’ to North Korea.

Cold Case Hammarskjöld / Fallet Hammarskjöld (2019)
¡Oi!

The Red Chapel (2009) is a documentary about three comedians from Denmark who enter North Korea under the pretense of being a comedy troupe on a cultural exchange. Film director Mads Brügger plays the troupe’s director accompanied by comedians Jacob Nossell and Simon Jul, who were adopted from Korea but had never visited. The trio is constantly led by a handler, Mrs. Pak, and their recordings are checked by DPRK officials every night. Jacob, who describes himself as spastic, is the trio’s “dark horse” in terms of speaking freely: the North Koreans cannot understand him when he speaks Danish due to his condition.
Jacob is the most interesting character because he is aware of the rumored human rights violations by the North Korean government against disabled people. Although it is difficult to obtain information about the country, it has been reported that the country commits infanticide against disabled newborns and holds disabled adults in camps. While everyone Jacob meets is incredibly nice to him because of the propaganda he embodies, he is aware that people like him are not allowed to live freely, or at all, in North Korea.
Ultimately, this is the problem with The Red Chapel, and any film made with the cooperation of the North Korean government. You are participating in a cultural exchange, but what you give them is propaganda that will be used against the North Korean people, who are victims of atrocious human rights violations. Jacob and Simon are two South Korean-born Danes, who returned to their “homeland” of North Korea. They did everything the DPRK government asked of them because they had no choice once they arrived.
What did Brügger and company get in return? They got a few instances where they maybe slyly indicated to some locals that they were aware of their country’s fascist roleplaying and suggested they should find ways to rebel against the government. They got some footage of themselves secretly disrespecting the North Korean government without their knowledge. But none of this really hurts their leaders or helps their people. They exposed the roles these people have to play, and it’s really sad, but it’s not worth the trade.
I don’t think the insights this film might bring are worth participating in an authoritarian regime’s propaganda against their own people. I’ve watched a few documentaries filmed inside North Korea, and they all basically fall for this trap. You can’t participate in the propaganda machine and expect to beat it.

“a kind of a horror that would put all my shenanigans to shame”
I generally prefer to look for movies and books in brick-and-mortar stores, especially used stores and thrift stores, in part because that’s how you find what you didn’t know you were looking for. It’s a very distinct pleasure which the online shopping experience can’t quite replicate.
By the same token, Cold Case Hammarskjöldmight…
