About the prompt: The following is the rough plot we have in mind for now, but we can always tweak and change things before Areiton begins the writing process (if we win the auction). If you join the pod bid, you get to participate in the discussion for the plot–if you want! :D Steve and Tony are two naval aviators who were chosen to attend Top Gun, the elite Naval Fighter Weapons School that trains the top one percent of US Navy pilots. They don’t get along at first due to their different flying and fighting approaches, but they eventually fall in love and quietly get together–the classic enemies/rivals-to-lovers trope. 

Tony never advances past Captain because he likes to fly. Steve reluctantly does. Both of them are crushed when Ben (Peter’s uncle aka the Goose of this AU, iykyk) dies in a flying accident, especially Tony. Fast forward years and years later. Tony is still crushed about Ben’s death. Steve tells him it’s not his fault, but try telling that to Peter (the Rooster of this AU), who is the new hotshot at Top Gun. Where Rhodey just sent Tony to teach.

About the pod bid: We pool together our money and collectively bid on Areiton as a group during MTH 2022 auction week–October 23 to October 29! As we said in our closing message at the end of this year’s auction, we've become something bigger and better than we ever imagined we could be when our journey began in 2018. As we mark half a decade of Marvel Trumps Hate, we want to share a few milestones with you starting with this year's auction results, so if you're used to our auction results posts…well, this one will look a little different. 😉

This year, 152 "Marvel"-ous creators came forward to offer 264 auctions.

And this year, we raised…

Back in 2018, our first auction total of $19,262.52 blew our minds—and this is over $16,700 more than that! 😮💖🎉

This was a quieter year than most (surely we're not the only ones suffering burnout because this has been A Year), so we're extremely grateful and proud of what we accomplished together. We broke records, some of which we were aiming for and some which we weren't. Of the ones we didn't expect, the record for the highest amount donated to a charity, which we smashed in 2021 ($6,349.98 to Planned Parenthood), was shattered with a whopping $8,039.99 going to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). We also had the biggest amount raised by a single auction this year: an unbelievable $2,101.67. All hail the power of pods!

And the biggest record of all that we set in 2023…

Drum roll, please…

With the help of 923 unique creators offering 2,217 auctions over the past five years, we raised a grand total of…

WE RAISED OVER $200,000, EVERYONE! No, we can't believe our eyes either. We're floored to say the least although maybe we shouldn't have been surprised. Every year, you manage to surprise us and set records, and this year was no different. You came out of the gate running and somehow you blazed right past our expectations, continued to make us adjust our stretch goals as bids and donations came in, and hit a number we weren't sure we'd reach even as we began to hope for it.

It’s been an incredible journey, with the mod chat pinging at all hours with excited gifs, effusive heart emojis, and inarticulate keyboard smashes as we expressed our love for the wonderful people in our fandom. It’s been very hard not blurting out the milestones as we reached them when we desperately wanted to share these amazing results with you all.

Creators, we couldn't have started this auction without you. We loved seeing so many veteran creators sign up again and were pleasantly surprised by how many new faces showed up to the party.

Bidders, as crazy as it sounds, most donations were small ones including a lot of those crazily high winning bids—so many of them were the result of people pooling their five dollars together! This has been consistently the case since MTH began. It just goes to show how much of an impact you can have when you’re part of something bigger than yourself. Each donation has a ripple effect, and enough ripples can cause a wave. You matter, and you can make a difference.

We also owe our success to our amazing signal boosters. There can’t be an auction without any participants, so to every fandom community Tumblr that agreed to reblog our posts, every Discord server mod who let us post announcements, and every person who shared our posts and encouraged their fandom friends to sign up and/or bid, thank you so much! Together, we reached hundreds of fantastic creators and bidders from all corners of the Marvel fandom, many of whom we didn't know and some who were hearing about us for the first time.

We’re so touched by the massive number of people who donated above and beyond their pledged amount, creators who took on multiple auctions and offered multiple winner slots, and bidders who accepted their second-place wins with such eagerness! We also had people make donations in the spirit of MTH even though they didn’t win an auction, which was beyond generous.

In addition to the astounding amount of money we were able to raise for charity, MTH was successful in other ways. We strove to be as inclusive as possible, determined to make this event a fandom-wide effort. Considering that the auctions covered over 381 unique platonic and romantic relationships and character-centric options (if we include "all ships/gen"-inclusive relationships, this number is even higher) across 36 universes within the Marvel multiverse, we can safely say that we accomplished our goal.

This spirit of inclusion also applies to our auctions and charities. Every one of 264 auctions was bid on, and every one of our 30 supported charities received donations. We’re in awe of your commitment to supporting all our creators and charities and thrilled that you spread all the love around, bidders!

Work Description: I am just starting out in my podfic practice, but I'd love to put your story to audio! You can see a few examples of my previous pods on my AO3 page. The higher starting bid reflects the time needed for both recording and editing. The longest pod I've done so far is 20 min, about 4k words, but I'm willing to go for longer stories. They may take a while for me to start and complete, as I often have to wait until I am home alone for the best recording environment, but I will do my best to get them done by the 2024 deadline, probably earlier. I see you recommending fics in POTS a lot and hyping people up and I've noticed that you focus on spotlighting your friends which is amazing because it's great to spread the love, but I think it would be awesome if you used your incredible platform to uplift smaller creators rather than people who already get lots of reads. I feel like that makes fandom more accessible to new faces and that would be amazing. Thank you! I hope you have an amazing day.

This was fun to come home to. 

Anon, I’m shocked by this message for a few reasons, and responding publicly for a few more. I would hope that if you’re active in POTS, you know that my entire purpose in fandom is to be welcoming to the whole community, and the insinuation that I don’t do that, or focus on that is very hurtful. Additionally, I generally rec my own fics because they’re the only ones I remember. I wish I knew who you were talking about, because I try to encourage all creators at all times. 

But by your choice to engage in this conversation through anon means - even though I think I’ve made it incredibly clear that my DMs are always open - says to me that you are not interested in a conversation, you are simply interested in shaming me for a perceived slight that I now have no way of correcting. I have no idea who you’d rather I be recommending or how you’d rather I handle it... or even if we’ve ever spoken!

I’m responding publicly because this idea of friends vs. smaller creators is... I know it’s A Thing for a lot of people. 

Okay, so I’m obviously friends with Ferret. And I know I’ve talked about her fics. Sabre’s too.  But I’ve also talked about how much I loved working with Marie, and desdemona, and Tina, and tig, and Robin, and Kait, and Neb, and Rise, and Issa, and 99%Stardust, and Shadow, and Darkness, and jehbeeeh, and moody and more whose names are escaping me right now because I admittedly typing this very emotionally - and I honestly can’t tell you any of their stats or anyone else’s, tbh. I know who I love to read because styles work for me or don’t. 

Additionally, fandom is about community. I don’t read tags, usually, and so something has to be rec’d in the server to catch my attention or written by an author I’m already following. Apologies that I subscribe to my friends, who have supported me, and my work, and make me feel like this fandom is home, when my life is so stressful that I’m usually one breath away from cracking. 

Finally, Ferret and I go out of our way on the pod to showcase as many creators and community members as possible. We ask people to highlight recommendations under 300 kudos as often as possible, I’ve interviewed far more community members who would consider themselves small than anyone else. So any insinuation that I don’t support smaller creators is just... I’m also happy to show you my MTH bid list and how much I spent on creators I didn’t even *know* because I wanted to support smaller creators. 

I know that stats and likes and recommendations are important and feel fleeting sometimes. I know that whenever people recommend political fics and my Rose Garden AU isn’t on their list, I wonder if they hated the fic and what I did wrong. I think sometimes those feelings are normal, and I’m sorry that they seem to be so strong for you that you felt obligated to send this very confusing message. I hope you can find whatever you’re looking for by sending this to me and others.

What if a certain someone - that may or may not be named Steve Rogers - has more than one soulmate? How would our dearest darlingests handle that? I worry there might be some flying off the handle in the works somewhere but I'm getting ahead of myself - or rather, ahead of @betheflame 's fantastical idea and words for this Wickedly fun AU.

Featuring Steve as Elphaba and Tony as Fiyero - our romantic soulmates destined to be together, but who need a little help believing the other wants them for real.

And, Steve's very Popular BFF, Bucky "Glinda" Barnes as his platonic, but no less important, soulmate. I mean, who else would you turst to teach you how to fix your hair?

I'm a multimedia artist working in the entertainment industry, and while I haven't offered any commissioned work in over ten years, this benefit auction is a rare chance to win a completely custom original watercolor/gouache painting from me featuring one of two colorful possibilities: 1.) Your pet (or your favorite animal) reimagined as a Marvel character! Think Alligator Loki, Throg, Wolf Bucky, or similar. The combination is up to you, but if it's off the beaten path, it would be fantastic if you drop me a message to ensure I can do your idea justice. 2.) As a second possibility, I'm also open to painting my take on an existing canon Marvel animal character such as Rocket, Cosmo, Jeff, Devil Dinosaur, Zabu, Redwing, or Lockheed! While I don't have a wide range of examples of watercolor/gouache Marvel fan art, rest assured that I'm extremely familiar with characters that are in the MCU and various series in addition to a range of scattered comic runs. That said, I'm also very much open to illustrating other Marvel characters as long as you supply the info and references for me to dig into! I have a lot of creative styles I can leverage ranging from fantastical realism to more comic-inspired approaches, so I'm very flexible with options to help bring your idea to life. :) Likewise, if you'd like to pursue a hero-infused painting of your pet, please make sure to collect some photos to share with me so I can capture your animal friend's likeness as accurately as possible. The more photos the better! In terms of bidding, I'm keeping my approach simple and straightforward: The higher the bids on the auction goes, the more time I will pour into rendering your furry, feathered, or scaled friend. I have no outstanding commissions on my plate (I no longer offer custom illustrations outside of special occasions like MTH), and all of my work for MTH 2022 was completed within about a month of when the auctions closed. Do you even know who were on the pod for the mth? How many people donated? Tbh I feel left out I can't even read the fic.

I think I only know two people who were part of the pod -- the person who's the official bidder (and was in contact with me about the prompt and I reckon gathered the other people of the pod together) and someone else who mentioned on tumblr that they were part of the pod. I reckon that the people in the pod are fannish friends/acquaintances who'd come together in some online space somewhere, and that’s pretty much all I know. I'd also like to add that this bid win was one of two that I offered in MTH 2019, where the other bid was for an a/b/o sequel I posted last year, and I have no idea if that winner was a single person or part of a pod as well.

It's a bummer to feel left out, but fandom is massive and has scattered pockets all over the place, and sometimes it's just a matter of luck if you're at the right place at the right time to see an activity that you'd like to participate in. I have no idea what's going on beyond my dash most of the time, and I'm not on twitter or discord, where there's more fannish interaction to be had. At the end of the day the MTH auction is for charity, and everyone gets to enjoy the fic & art & video output that results from it, not just the people who won bids.
