Will Luka Modric Continue With Croatia or Retiring ?
Tumblr media
After finishing the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the third place, Croatia star midfielder Luka Modric is likely to end his World Cup career while the speculations have been made over his international career post World Cup.
The 37-year-old Modric has made his country proud by back-to-back World Cup podium finishes and added another feather in his cap.
Luka Modric Retirement Rumors
Modric said in Qatar, "No, I won't leave the national team. I feel very fit, very good and I'll stay here until I can. There's no reason to retire. It's my choice. People say I should leave and focus on club football. I don't agree."

Dejan’s snippet-High school AU
Check the notes for the link of previous parts in the masterlist or find a link in my description.
I know, I know it has been super long since @domo-no-domo-yes and I updated this fic but here it is. Warnings for some self depriciating thoughts in this snippet. Enjoy :)
It was ten in the morning. Sure, it was late by most standards, but not for Dejan. Not on a Saturday, and definitely not after the Friday night he spent with Mario, Leona and Mo. His head was still pounding from the drinks, and he was pretty sure that his eyes were pretty bloodshot. In short, Dejan was still hungover and the furthest thing from being happy about being woken up this early. By the constant chime of his doorbell, no less. There was nothing more he wanted than to sink into his feather mattress and bury his head under a pillow. Unfortunately, however, that was not meant to be.
He sat on his bed, trying to think of who on earth would come at this ungodly hour. Definitely not Leona or Mo. They were drunk as skunks when he dropped them off last night. Mario? Dejan considered it, then shook his head. Mario wasn’t the sort to wake up early during the weekend either, unless there was an important game he had to train for. He then realised that the tutor Mrs. Vida had told him about was supposed to come over. Shit, he thought. He remembered that Mrs. Vida told him to expect his new tutor at around ten in the morning.
Dejan practically jumped out of the bed, scurried towards his front door and looked through the peephole. Standing outside the his door was the guy whom he presumed to be his tutor. Holy shit, he’s hot, Dejan gasped, shaking his head and rubbing his eyes before looking out once again, to see if it really was the cute guy, and not a random dweeb. Honey blond hair, skateboard tucked under his arm, muscular legs. Still the same guy. Looking at his new tutor’s face, something about the guy seemed rather familiar. Dejan shook it off, however. They were from the same school after all, so he might’ve bumped into him in the hallways at one point, and they probably shared some classes. He quickly pressed his phone’s camera on the peephole and snapped a picture, grinning to himself before opening the door, forgetting to put on a shirt.
He only remembered that he was half-naked when he saw his new tutor’s look of surprise. The guy’s golden eyes were wide and his soft lips formed an “o”. He obviously looked taken aback by Dejan’s lack of clothing. Dejan felt himself blushing as his tutor’s expression swiftly morphed into a dark scowl.
Come to think of it, the scowl matched the black clothes Dejan observed that the punk, Lukas, Luke or whatever his name, was wearing - a short-sleeved zip-up hoodie with studs on the shoulders, shorts with way too many zippers and straps, combat boots and fingerless gloves with metal letters spelling “FUCK OFF” on the knuckles. He also did notice, however, that around the guy’s neck was a lavender choker, and that his eyeshadow was of the same color. He couldn’t help but stare, and Lukas - or whatever his name was - cleared his throat.
“Can you please put on a shirt or something before we start...if you don’t mind? Unless that's equally hard for you as math obviously is, of course.”
Dejan smiled lazily at the small, annoyed tutor, whose face was becoming redder by the second, as he stepped aside so the latter could get in. He showed him the way to the small living room before heading back to his room to grab a shirt.
When he was safely behind his door and away from those sharp topaz eyes, he rubbed his head, which was still throbbing a little, as he picked up the shirt he had discarded on the floor the night before. As he began to pull it on, a slightly devious idea popped into his mind. He snickered, before taking off the shirt once more and opening his closet. He pulled out his team sweatshirt - red and white, with the letters “DL” in blue on its left chest area, and a large, blue number six printed on its back - and put it on. As he looked at himself in the mirror and combed his slightly mussed hair with his fingers, he chuckled, deciding that he now looked more like the rich footballer bastard that his new tutor probably took him for. He knew that look well enough. So be it.
He headed back to his living room with his school bag over his shoulder, reasonably decent this time. His new tutor took one look at his sweatshirt, glared for a second before ever-so-slightly rolling his eyes and pointing at the dining room, just immediately adjacent.
“I think it would be better if we studied over there.” He gestured towards the small, round dining table before slinging his backpack over one shoulder. Dejan wasn’t sure about the idea. He was more accustomed to studying in the comfort of his own bed, and for a few moments, actually toyed with the idea of inviting the punk to tutor him in his bedroom. He stopped himself, however, and forced a nod. The last thing he wanted was to get his balls cut off. His tutor might have been small, but something told Dejan that he was fully capable of messing anyone up when given the chance.
Dejan hastily checked his phone as he followed his tutor to the dining table, looking at the reminders he had written down yesterday after Mrs. Vida had talked to him about his new tutor. Among them was the name “Luka Modric”, which had to be his tutor’s name. Luka had planted himself on one of the chairs and was now taking out his math textbook, his notebook as well as some sheets of paper with problems written on it in surprisingly neat handwriting. Dejan’s eyes grew as he peered at the problems. He expected his tutor to come prepared, but not THAT prepared.
“Are you even prepared for this, Lovren?” Luka looked up and gave Dejan a questioning look. Dejan chuckled slightly before pointing at his messenger bag. He put it down before noticing that Luka was rubbing his stomach. It was a subtle gesture, but he noticed it all the same. He arched a brow at the gesture, and met Luka’s eyes.
“You hungry? Don’t pretend I didn’t see that.” Dejan nudged Luka on the shoulder before turning around and heading for the pantry. He opened it, and before he took out anything, he glanced over his shoulder and noticed Luka’s guarded, yet slightly curious expression. He smiled, before reaching for a box of Domacica and turning around to show it to the punk. Luka bit his lip, and his mouth was still expressionless, but Dejan could’ve sworn he saw the small teenager’s eyes light up for a couple of seconds. He shook his head, still smiling, before sitting down and opening the box. He then pushed it towards Luka, offering to share.
To say that he was not prepared to witness his tutor eating was an understatement.
As Luka began to walk him through the first few problems, Dejan noticed that he was stuffing his mouth with Domacica almost too quickly. Not just one at a time, but rather two, and a few times even three. Dejan himself was crazy for the chocolate tea biscuits, but this was a whole new level of madness, or hunger, or both. He shook his head slowly and bit his tongue as he tried to stifle the laughter that was threatening to escape from his mouth as he saw chocolate smudges on his new tutor’s lips and fingers. He honestly did not know whether to feel sorry for Luka, who most likely skipped breakfast, or find the sight of Luka stuffing his face hilarious and rather adorable.
“You do know that skipping breakfast is bad for you, right? I wouldn’t mind if you showed up a bit later. You really should eat.” As soon as he said that however, Dejan wished he could have taken it back. Luka's face seemed to close off even more and the scowl that had disappeared when he started explaining math came back.
“Like you don't pig out on those, Lovren. Don’t pretend that you don’t have four more boxes in your fucking cupboard, and probably many more empty ones in your trash.” He hissed back. Dejan felt his face heating up and reddening, and cursed himself for reacting that way. It wasn't as if he was ashamed of hoarding Domacica, but something in Luka’s glare made him feel exposed and naked, as if his faults were all on display for the world to see.  He averted his gaze, shrugged and tried to concentrate on doing his work instead.
They fell back in silence and relative peace, save for Luka's careful explaining of the material and the occasional snarky comment from him every once in a while. The atmosphere was still rather tense but Dejan was actually beginning to understand the material they were working on. Much more than he understood things back when Mrs. Vida gave the class a pre-test a few days ago to assess their readiness. He remembered that he only got three out of ten items right. Thankfully, it didn’t count towards his grade for the term, but it was still rather embarrassing for him. He wasn’t a bad student in general, but he much preferred being out on the pitch or hanging with his friends rather than spend late nights studying, and even though Mrs. Vida was an excellent teacher, his own attention span wasn’t the best. He was seventeen, after all.
After an hour and a half, he found that he was nearly finished with the exercises Luka had prepared for him. There was one part that he didn't fully understand, however, and he felt his anxiety over not being good enough going up every second. He began chewing on a nail as he tried to take in the problems.
How stupid and idiotic could you be? To not even understand simple math?! Dejan heard the voice in his head chastising him, not once but over and over. This wasn’t the first time it happened, and he knew he should know better and ignore it, yet it still managed to get under his skin.
“Dejan. Dejan!” Luka snapped his fingers in front of his face to get his attention. The taller boy blinked twice at the gesture, nearly falling out of his chair as he rocked backwards instinctively.
“Sorry. I-I kinda zoned out.” Dejan shook his head before shifting his eyes towards Luka,  who looked almost...worried? Impossible, he thought.
“It's alright...we can finish up for today since you couldn’t seem to concentrate.” Luka’s words still had their characteristic edge, but the venom that was present the whole morning was oddly missing. Dejan wasn't sure what to think of what he observed.
“No, I didn’t mean it that way...it’s just that…” Dejan tried to explain, before he trailed off as he looked helplessly at the question he couldn’t understand. He didn’t want to disappoint Luka or give the impression that he was stupid to yet another person. Yet, his pride got the better of him. If he admitted that he didn’t understand, he risked facing remarks that he would rather not hear. His ego wasn’t going to allow him to tell the truth. So instead, he kept his mouth shut.
“It’s just that you’re most likely feeling lazy, that’s what. I’m only letting this slide because it’s our first day. Any other day, I’m sure Mrs. Vida would love to hear about it.” Luka snarked, the coldness back in his tone as he began to clear the table.
Dejan sat unmoving and silent. Had Luka noticed? Or was he just thankful that the tutoring session was over? Dejan was inclined to think the latter, judging from the fact that it was a Saturday, and Luka probably had better things to do, unless he was an utter bore with no sense of fun.
He quickly masked his fear and anxiety with a smirk, hoping he looked more nonchalant than he felt. In truth, the tutoring session went much better than he expected and he didn't have anxiety attack over failing at most simple math tasks. Even though he didn’t manage to understand the last problem all that well, it was already an improvement over how he usually was.
“I’m sure you’ll be more than happy to inform her about my laziness in the future, golden boy.” Dejan teased back as he instinctively reached out to ruffle Luka’s blond waves. They looked so soft to him, and he couldn’t resist the urge to touch them, even though he was pretty sure that Luka was going to kill him for trying.
Luka saw Dejan’s hand coming, and immediately whacked it aside. Hard. He glared at Dejan, and the latter couldn’t help but notice Luka’s golden eyes flash with warning. Though the new tutor was silent, his posture and the fire in his eyes told Dejan that he was anything but calm at the moment.
“Unlike you, Lovren, I don't use my parents’ money to get good grades. And it seems my style is working better than yours, as of the moment...or should I say, for three years running.”  Luka replied as he as he gathered his books and neatly placed them into his bag.
Dejan bit back a hurtful comeback that managed to make its way to tip of his tongue. He was more than an airheaded football player with rich parents. His math grades may have not been the best but that didn't mean he was an idiot, and if there was one thing he could live without, it was being made to feel as if he was stupid and ineffectual.
Aren't you, though? It seems as if everyone thinks you are. And who are you but what everyone sees you as?
He wanted so much to scream at his own thoughts to shut up and stop bothering him. He hated that they tormented him constantly. He looked away and rubbed his head a few times, barely noticing that Luka already picked up his skateboard and was heading towards the door. When he looked back and noticed that Luka had gone on ahead, he gave a rather sheepish smile as he he quickly followed.
“I guess we'll see each other...um…” Dejan trailed off, trying to remember if they even discussed the next tutoring session.
Stupid. You can't even remember to do basic stuff. How did you even pass your subjects until now?
“I'll text you. Mrs. Vida gave me your phone number.” Luka stated, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Dejan tried to stifle a blush upon hearing that. His tutor had his phone number? He definitely dreaded the inevitable stream of study reminders that might come flooding in, yet a part of him was genuinely curious about whether his tutor would really take the time to text him.
“Right. Makes sense. Have a good weekend?” Dejan nervously shifted from one leg to another, realizing too late that what he said sounded more like a question than a statement, as if he was asking if it was an alright thing to say. If he had to be honest with himself, he felt uncomfortable under Luka's observant look. It was as if Luka could get under his skin or see right through him - see that he wasn’t exactly the smug bastard that could charm almost anyone with a few sentences and a cocky smirk.
You are such a fucking joke. Pathetic.
He needed Luka to leave immediately, before his anxiety could rear its ugly head in front of his new tutor.
“Anyway, I gotta get prepared for practice now. See ya!” He quickly blurted out, as he practically pushed Luka out the door and slammed it. Dejan then turned around and leaned against the locked door, sighing to himself with relief as he wiped off the cold sweat on his forehead. I’m a fucking disaster, he thought.
He just hoped he could make it through the next tutoring sessions without any further incidents. It was nothing personal to either of them and Luka obviously despised him anyway. It wasn’t as if he was going to warm up to such a rude and obnoxious tutor anytime soon.
Besides, how hard could it possibly be, anyway?

Neymar to Barcelona, Eriksen to Man Utd, Ozil exit – Transfer deals to expect in January | Football | Sport
Neymar to Barcelona, Eriksen to Man Utd? Big Debate on transfer deals to expect in January (Image: GETTY)
Transfer news is a hot topic these days with fans eagerly anticipating mega-money deals being pushed through by their respective clubs.
Barcelona, Manchester United, Tottenham and their fellow big guns splashed out this summer but must now wait until January to do more business.
A number of transfers which did not go through before the respective deadlines across Europe could be resurrected in the new year.
And Express Sport is on hand to run down the moves we expect to happen when clubs are free to throw their cash around once again.
Transfer deals to expect in January
Matthew Dunn
Mesut Ozil to China
Arsenal have long been trying to ship their £350,000-a-week star off their books and so far Mesut Ozil has resisted a move to China.
That said, he has a large fan-base in Asia and the bleakness that he faces in the weeks ahead could just tip him over the edge.
With Unai Emery happy to go with all three of his attack-minded players – Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe – he will be unable to carry Ozil’s lack of defensive resilience as well.
His style of play is at odds with Emery’s high-tempo vision and the clock is ticking on Ozil louder than ever.
Christian Eriksen to Real Madrid
The stuttering start to the season suggests all is still not well at the Bernabeu and it would not be the first mid-course rethink the Spanish giants have had in recent seasons.
By then, Christian Eriksen’s value will be burning a hole in Daniel Levy’s pocket – although he if he is considered vital to Tottenham climbing back aboard the Champions League gravy train next season, he may be too valuable as a player for them to cash in.
Otherwise, Jan Vertonghen could be sacrificed as Tottenham look to recoup some of their summer spending while still paying for their stadium.
Neymar to Barcelona
Drawing Real Madrid in the Champions League – with awkward Galatasaray lurking – makes Paris Saint-Germain susceptible to an unthinkable group-stage exit.
That would open the exit doors finally for their prize asset to return to his former club Barcelona.
The lack of competition in French football means unless PSG look like reaching the final stages of the Champions League there is little for Neymar to play for and time is ticking for him to realise his full talent on the game’s biggest stages.

James Benson
Christian Eriksen to Real Madrid
Unless Tottenham are challenging for the Premier League title – which is improbable – Daniel Levy will not pass up the opportunity to bring in some cash for a player who will otherwise leave for free in the summer.
With Real Madrid unlikely to be able to prise Paul Pogba away from Manchester United in the new year, Christian Eriksen is a good, high-quality back-up option.
Zinedine Zidane needs a replacement for Luka Modric, too, and Eriksen can fill the void the Croatian will eventually leave behind.
Michy Batshuayi to anyone (on loan)
Michy Batshuayi will one day leave Chelsea a Premier League winner but his spell at Stamford Bridge has had few moments to cherish.
The striker, after failing to make a breakthrough into the Blues’ starting XI and having been loaned to Valencia and Crystal Palace last season, is now behind Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud in the pecking order under Frank Lampard.
And, with a place in Belgium’s Euro 2020 squad in his sights, Batshuayi will surely push for a move away.
Toby Alderweireld to Manchester City
As with Christian Eriksen, it will depend on Tottenham’s title hopes, but he is also out of contract next summer.
Manchester City look decidedly light at centre-back, following Vincent Kompany’s summer departure and with Aymeric Laporte now injured, so could do with a reinforcement.
Alderweireld has proved his ability in the Premier League and would be an astute signing around the £20m mark, even if he only stays at City for a couple of years.
Tumblr media
Christian Eriksen was eager to leave Tottenham for Real Madrid or Barcelona over the summer (Image: GETTY)
Luke Gardener
Christian Eriksen to Manchester United
While it didn’t happen this summer I can see the Dane making a move to Old Trafford.
I’m not convinced Real Madrid are that interested despite the Tottenham star wanting a move to the Bernabeu.
Manchester United will desperately need more creativity by January and Christian Eriksen could decide it is the best option for him. If it happens, you can expect Paul Pogba to leave for Real Madrid next summer.
Neymar to Real Madrid
The Brazilian wants out of Paris Saint-Germain and would prefer a switch to Barcelona but the Catalan club cannot afford he forward.
Florentino Perez has a history of pulling off big transfers and signing Neymar would be the perfect deal for Los Blancos.
Real Madrid could need to bolster their ranks as Barcelona and Atletico Madrid look strong this season already.
Toby Alderweireld to Manchester City
This is a left-field choice but with Vincent Kompany leaving for Anderlecht and Aymeric Laporte out injured long-term it would be a cheap and good option for Pep Guardiola.
Toby Alderweireld is in the final year of his contract and Spurs would be forced to sell if a good enough offer came in in January.
I expect City to bolster their defensive ranks in the next transfer window even if it isn’t with Alderweireld.
Tumblr media
Ben Chilwell could swap Leicester City for Manchester City during the January transfer window (Image: GETTY)
Jack Otway
A striker to Manchester United
I’ve decided to leave out any names because, as things stand, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is happy with what he has.
But if Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial continue to struggle – and Mason Greenwood spends more time on the bench than in the starting XI – then that may change.
Manchester United distanced themselves from free agent Fernando Llorente before he joined Napoli but they could pull a surprise out of the bag this January.
Neymar to Real Madrid
Realistically, Neymar won’t be going anywhere.
But despite all the talk of a return to Barcelona this summer, I can see Real Madrid sealing his signing instead.
Los Blancos, come January, may be stuck in a rut. Neymar will no doubt again want to leave Paris Saint-Germain and Barca can’t afford him. It’s these sort of situations that Florentino Perez is so good at exploiting.
Christian Eriksen to Real Madrid
Real Madrid didn’t move for Christian Eriksen because they were hoping to get Paul Pogba instead.
But that may change if they’re off the pace in January.
Spurs will no doubt look to sell the Denmark international before losing him for free – and that would suit Real who would no doubt pounce on his significantly reduced price tag.
Tumblr media
RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano might be Unai Emery’s next recruit at Arsenal (Image: GETTY)
Lewis Winter
Dayot Upamecano to Arsenal
Arsenal were said to have made a late £55m bid for the RB Leipzig defender in the summer and they could return with another in January.
David Luiz joined from Chelsea on deadline day but he is not the long-term, or maybe not even short term, answer to Unai Emery’s problems at the back.
Dayot Upamecano is only 20 but has been a regular in the Leipzig side for a couple of years already and would be an upgrade on the Gunners’ current centre-backs.
Christian Eriksen to Manchester United
Christian Eriksen is out of contract at Tottenham at the end of the current season and chairman Daniel Levy will not want to let him go for nothing.
The Dane can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January but his dream club Real Madrid have their eyes on other targets, such as Paul Pogba.
Manchester United need a midfielder with a goalscoring threat and Eriksen would be just the man.
Mesut Ozil to DC United
Mesut Ozil is yet to step on the pitch for Arsenal this season and his future at the club does not look certain.
MLS side DC United will need to replace Wayne Rooney as he heads for Derby County and they were linked with Ozil in the summer.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s late departure will mean the German gets more minutes at the Emirates but it is hard to see how he gets into the starting XI after Dani Ceballos’ positive start to his loan spell.
Tumblr media
Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford (Image: GETTY)
Matt Atherton
Nemanja Matic to Inter Milan
Nemanja Matic has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United, and appears to be unhappy with life at Old Trafford.
He recently ‘liked’ a comment on Instagram slamming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he’s seen as just a back-up in the Norwegian’s plans.
His exact destination is up for debate, but on the face of it, a big, strong player like Matic is destined for a move to Inter Milan.
Ben Chilwell to Manchester City
Manchester City were rumoured to be interested in Ben Chilwell in January 2019, but backtracked after Oleksandr Zinchenko’s superb end to the season.
But, with Benjamin Mendy’s injury record, Pep Guardiola may be tempted to find an alternative left-back in January.
Chilwell has been excellent for Leicester City since bursting onto the scene, and is rightly considered England’s best left-back at present.
Bruno Fernandes to Tottenham
Bruno Fernandes’ transfer saga became increasingly tiresome as we edged closer to the English deadline last month.
But, he’s still made it clear that he wants to leave Sporting Lisbon, and a deal for the Portugal international is likely to come to fruition in January.
Tottenham are likely to be the destination for Fernandes, especially if they aren’t in or around the top four by the time January comes around – Daniel Levy may be tempted to splash the cash in order to sustain Spurs’ dominance over north London rivals Arsenal.
Tumblr media
Arsenal and Everton both had a look at Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha during the summer window (Image: GETTY)
Jamie Anderson
Christian Eriksen to Manchester United
Signing Christian Eriksen is an absolute no-brainer for any club in world football.
The Denmark international, 27, has made it perfectly clear that he intends to leave Tottenham when his contract expires in June 2020.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will have no option but to sell the playmaker for a discounted price in January or watch him leave for free six months after.
And with 50 goals and 64 assists in 210 Premier League appearances – that’s a bargain Manchester United simply can’t afford to miss.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs more guile and creativity in his ranks and, with Paul Pogba still desperate to join Real Madrid, Eriksen is the perfect candidate to fill his boots.
Bruno Fernandes to Tottenham
The transfer saga of the summer could finally come to fruition in January.
Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham were all linked with the Portuguese midfielder during the window – but the 24-year-old remains a Sporting Lisbon player.
However, with Christian Eriksen set to leave north London, Fernandes is the obvious replacement.
Fernandes has already admitted agreeing terms with Spurs a few weeks before deadline day but the two parties failed to agree a fee.
Now, with Eriksen on his way, Daniel Levy could be prepared to open his cheque book and secure a marquee signing for Mauricio Pochettino.
Mesut Ozil to anyone prepared to pay his wages!
Wilfried Zaha to Everton
Surely Wilfried Zaha’s days at Crystal Palace are numbered?
The Ivory Coast international was reported to have handed in a transfer request on deadline day to secure a £70million move to Everton.
Eagles chairman Steve Parish snubbed that offer – but has publicly admitted that he’ll not stand in Zaha’s way should he wish to leave in January.
Marco Silva’s side have lofty ambitions and should they be there or thereabouts in the battle for European qualification – another raid could be in the offing.

Luka Modrić deserves his place among the soccer gods
Tumblr media
Luke Modrić’s Ballon d’Or wasn’t a repudiation of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but a celebration of soccer’s underrepresented geniuses.
After he became the first Croatian player to ever win the Ballon d’Or, Luka Modrić said:
“History will say that a Croatian player representing his small country, won the Ballon d’Or after Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi, who are players at another level. Nobody has the right to compare themselves to them. They are the best in the history of this sport.”
Modric dedicated his award to players like Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Wesley Sneijder, midfielders like him “who could have won the Ballon d’Or ... but it didn’t happen,” players who never got to be praised on the grandest award stages because they were unfortunate to play in the era of the Ronaldo-Messi duopoly. He suggested that his victory might be an indication that, after ten years, people are in the mood for someone new.
There will be obvious debates over the validity of Modrić’s victory because, even as he admits, Ronaldo and Messi are on another level. As individuals, they were still the two best players in the world last season. Ronaldo finished with 48 goals in 48 appearances for club and country, with 10 assists. Messi ended with 47 goals in 54 appearances, with 21 assists. The award is arguably skewed towards forwards, but the fact remains that we’re still in the era of the two best players in soccer’s history.
What seemed to push Modrić above them was a combination of voter fatigue and the heroic story of Croatia’s World Cup journey. Argentina and Portugal lost in the first round of the knockout stage, while Croatia went to the World Cup final for the first time in its nation’s history.
Croatia was the best story of the tournament. They were an underdog that exemplified hard work, persistence, and a little bit of talent — everything that appeals to our most optimistic ideas about individualism and meritocracy. Faced against bigger countries — teams with more resources and talent, the superpowers who had won World Cups before — Croatia were the hope that privilege and circumstances are not the defining factors of how far one can go, that limits can be broken by individual quality, fight, and belief.
During the summer, Modrić showed the whole world that even if he is not on the same level as Ronaldo and Messi, he is the player closest to them. He was the best player all tournament, but I think it was in Croatia’s victory over England that his claim to being the best player in the world was solidified, both in performance and in story.
youtube
When Croatia met England in the semifinals of the World Cup, many of Croatia’s players were either injured or hobbling. Croatia had already played and won two extra-time games in the knockout stages. England’s loss against Belgium in the last game of the group stages meant that they were able to avoid the stronger half of the bracket that included Belgium and France. They looked like the favorites to make it to the final on the side where they had to face Colombia, Sweden, and then Croatia.
England scored five minutes into the game, and looked composed against a tired Croatian team. But Croatia, full of players who never seemed to give up, equalized in the 68th minute through Ivan Perišić. The game went to extra time, and somehow the team full of players who could barely walk, let alone run, and playing its third extra-time game in a row, won through a Mario Mandžukić strike in the 109th minute.
Croatia’s made its first-ever World Cup final because Modrić dominated the midfield against England, as he had against every opponent all tournament. He ran circles around England’s midfield even while he was visibly exhausted. Modrić at his most fatigued was still several levels better than everyone he faced. Not because his opponents were that bad, but because Modrić was that good.
There were so many instances when he would find small opportunities to catch his breath because he and his partners in midfield, Ivan Rakitić and Marcelo Brozović, had run themselves into the ground to stay alive.
Sometimes when he was taking a corner, Modrić would lean against the advertisement boards as players set up in the box. When he went into a slide tackle and missed, or whenever he hit the ground, he stayed down for a few extra seconds, breathing hard, before getting back up and continuing his work.
Once in the second half against England, a Croatia cross was headed out to the edge of England’s box. The ball bounced once, and as it was coming down again, and with Harry Kane tracking back to win it, Modrić jumped for the header. Kane slide under him. The foul was called against Kane, but immediately after his foul, Kane was fouled himself and stayed down from the pain. The referee stopped play, and as Ashley Young conversed with the referee about the incident, Modrić put his hands on his knees and took deep breaths. He looked completely worn out.
Then on his next touches on the ball, Modrić bamboozled Dele Alli and broke England’s pressure by one-touching the ball back to Brozović, floating behind his man and between the wall that Alli and Kane had formed, and receiving the ball back between them.
Tumblr media
Modrić made England’s press look amateurish. He does things like that so casually that it can be mistaken for being easy. He exploits space so well that he seems to be everywhere at all times. He’s technically perfect, able to play any pass with both feet with the vision to see the pass as soon as it’s possible. Modrić’s first touch always leads to his next move, and he hardly ever has a bad touch.
My personal favorite aspect of his game is his dribbling and close control, which involves a lot of feints since he’s not the fastest or trickiest player. It’s ridiculously fun to watch him avoid multiple defenders while barely touching the ball.
Modrić is also a factory worker as much as an artist — an everyman who also happens to be an exceptional genius. As much as he is pleasing to the mind, in terms of beauty, he is also pleasing to a heart that appreciates passion and persistence.
Modrić works just as hard as anyone, if not harder. Against England, he constantly needed to catch his breath because as soon as play restarted, he was sprinting all over the field, intercepting passes, sliding into tackles, and committing the odd cynical foul on Alli to prevent a goalscoring opportunity. Early in the second half against England, a commentator described him as “Modric, who never stops running.”
When he was subbed off in the 119th minute, the whole stadium applauded him. He didn’t score any of goals, but everything positive for Croatia had gone through him. Before Croatia played France, it was a foregone conclusion that he was going to be named the best player of the tournament. Combined with his success at club level, he was in pole position to be named the best player in the world.
It’s ridiculous now to think that in his first season at Real Madrid, Modrić was once voted as the worst signing of the season. Now he’s the player who won three Champions League titles in a row, took Croatia to the World Cup final, and finally broke the dominance of Ronaldo and Messi for the Ballon d’Or.
In his acceptance speech for the award, Modrić added, “I consider myself a normal person and act that way ... I am happy that someone normal is able to win the Ballon d’Or.” This past season, Modrić proved that even mere mortals can become football gods, too.

Meaning: Person From Lucania, Italy
[toc]
1. Meaning of the name "Luka"
Luka is the spelling of Russian and Slavic Lucas (Latin) from Greek meaning Lou Louasas means a man from Lucania, an ancient district of southern Italy. The Latin Lucas was often used in the Middle Ages as the official written form for the more colloquial “Luke.”
During the post-classical era, Lucas was more commonly used as a surname, rather than a first name. In modern times, the name became more misleading and more common as a published name with the publication of the Authorized New Version of Use, Lucas, is Luke's preferred spelling, That makes it a more learned sound.
The “Luke” names mainly owe their popularity to the author of the third gospel of the New Testament, The Gospel According to Luke (written in the first century A.D.). Luke was a resident of Antioch (present-day Turkey/Syria); he was a physician and colleague/convert of Saint Paul.
Luke's Gospel in the form of a letter records an ordered account of Jesus' birth, life, death and resurrection from the perspective of a historian. Luke’s portrayal deals mainly with Christ as the savior of the world (particularly the poor, downtrodden and outcasts).
His stories focus on Jesus’ compassion for all people as evidenced by the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son (both of which appear in Luke’s gospel). The New Testament’s Book of Acts is also attributed to Luke’s authorship.
All four gospel authors (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) have been lending their names to scores of baby boys throughout the Western World for two millennia. Luka's Slavic form is particularly common in southern Slavic states.
It happened to be the No. 1 name for boys in Croatia and Slovenia. Luka also ranks high in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Luka's spelling also works well in Belgium and France.
2. Loukas

This can’t be almost done, can it? It feels like just yesterday we had a fresh tournament, clean and blank, nothing but 32 teams and possibilities. Four teams now remain, and we are clinging to these last beautiful moments of the 2018 World Cup. But we are due for some beautiful moments. The final four teams are richly deserving. France has been the most talented team of the tournament, notching signature wins over tough opponents Argentina and Uruguay, looking mighty — if a bit safe — in the process. They’ll take on Belgium, the wildly entertaining (perhaps too much so) side which throws caution to the wind against everyone and is trying to score beautiful goals at every opportunity. On the other side there is England, young, fresh and fun England (who thought we’d ever say those words?), scoring goals and being led beautifully by Gareth Southgate. They’ll take on Croatia, led by Luke Modric — perhaps the player of the tournament. There are only four matches left in this World Cup. Let’s cherish all of them.

The rivalry between Manchester City and Manchester United has always been present, but it has intensified in recent seasons due to the dominance of the blue half.
Pep Guardiola guided City to the Premier League title in the 2017-18 campaign, leaving United 19 points adrift in second place.
Jose Mourinho failed to win a trophy with the Red Devils this season, and he came under the microscope numerous times regarding his treatment of the players.
Publicly, the Portuguese coach criticised the likes of Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial, while questions were raised over Paul Pogba’s form.
The midfielder, who re-signed for United from Juventus in the summer of 2016, has struggled to live up to his £89m price tag.
The France international has had moments of brilliance on the pitch, but the consistency has not been there.
It is rare for those associated with United and City to compliment one another, but according to Get French Football News, Pogba told TV station Canal + that a number of his rivals are better midfielders than himself.
City stars Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Yaya Toure made the list, which has sparked an interesting reaction from fans.
