Here are the planned Long Island Railroad service patterns for when East Side Access opens!
Dashed lines show peak-hour service variations. Not all stopping patterns are shown—some trains may not run the entire route, and some may skip stops or make additional intermediate stops along their route.
The emphasis of these timetables seems to be giving the majority of stops direct service to both Penn Station and Grand Central, with most major branches interlined with an hourly train to each Manhattan terminal.
In off-peak hours, Grand Central has hourly trains to Port Washington, Huntington, Ronkonkoma, Hempstead, Babylon (local), Far Rockaway (weekdays only), and Long Beach (weekends only).
In off-peak hours, Penn Station has hourly trains to Port Washington, Huntington, Ronkonkoma, Babylon (local and express), Long Beach (weekdays only), and Far Rockaway (weekends only).
In off-peak hours, Atlantic Terminal has hourly trains to West Hempstead and two additional hourly trains to Jamaica. In peak hours, it also has trains to Hempstead and Freeport.
Long Island City is only served in peak hours, as the endpoint for express diesel trains from Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson, and Montauk.
A couple more examples of how service patterns are designed for direct access to both stations: Babylon trains bound for Grand Central will stop at Lynbrook to complement the Long Beach service to Penn, and Huntington trains bound for Penn will stop at Floral Park to complement the Hempstead service to Grand Central.
If you want to view the timetables for yourself, here's the link: https://new.mta.info/agency/long-island-rail-road/lirr-to-grand-central/schedules
One final note: I'm very proud of this "trident" shape for showing Grand Central, Long Island City, and Penn Station. It feels both elegant and memorable, and I think it's the best way to show the three endpoints without condensing the routes.

Adieu to 2023
2023 is history. Not that I will look back upon it fondly. Too many scary things reared their ugly heads during the year gone by. I fear though, that 2024 will disappoint us even more. November 2024 will be a water shed moment for the US. And I am not hopeful. But enough of these dark thoughts. It has been quite a while since the last blog appeared here. I just never seemed to find the time and…

Long Island Railroad - LIRR Class BB3 electric locomotive Nr. 328A + 328B

Long Island Railroad - LIRR Class BB3 electric locomotive Nr. 328A + 328B by Historical Railway Images Via Flickr: Noisily shuttling through complicated coach yard switches, the deceptively diminutive BB class electric locomotives proved the workhorses of passenger stations in Philadelphia, New York and Long Island. Affectionately dubbed "rats" by railfans and railroaders, the mighty little boxcabs switched consists for famous name trains and commuter runs alike.
LOOK AT THIS.

I wanna see the parallel world where the LIRR got M2s.

Friday – photo by Mitch Waxman November 7th, and one back in NYC – I had to move the car for alternate side, so I went to a point of elevation nearby HQ for an hour and shot a bunch of train photos not unlike the one above. I also ran out a pretty large panorama shot, which you can look at here. I’m working on a City focused transliteration of the Bible which I dub “The New Yorker Testament”…

LIRR ran four of these little hirail VW Transporters back in the 1960's -- basically for less cost and hassle than a Fairmount Speeder and just as good on gas...

Came equipped with a homemade pintle jack turntable for fast U-turns! Seemingly the track maintenance crews, who called themselves the Cockney slang "Gandy Dancers" lovingly called this versatile little Volkswagen Transporter a "Gandyvvagen"

i once heard a someone praise the LIRR as a fantastic example of what public transport should be like and it was at that moment i fully realized exactly how pathetic and broken public transport in the usa really is.

When I was in New York I had to go to target in Brooklyn to pick up an order for my cousin and this target was like directly next to the Barclays Center and the whole time I was like damn. MCR performed here. so yeah I’m thinking about that today.
