Tomás Saraceno, Poetic Cosmos of the Breath, 2007.
For the International Artist Airshow in Gunpowder Park London, in 2007 Saraceno was invited to present a new installation, commissioned by the Arts Catalysts. Poetic Cosmos of the Breath is a solar dome of around 60 m diameter, made of thin iridescent foil, anchored with sandbags to the ground. On September 22nd 2007 at dawn, the giant dome slowly inflated with the air and gradually grew with the sun. Aided by the participants, Poetic Cosmos of the Breath is a performative event and an invitation to collectively attune to the natural rhythms that encircle us, the clouds, the sun, the blue skies and rainbows.
As the sun rises, the air inside the sculpture starts to heat up, causing the sculpture to start to lift and activating the iridescent foil into a cascade of reflections and refractions. The irradiating surface of the foil becomes illuminative compliment to the natural environment of the park, redirecting and expanding the reflections of the sky and its ever changing, boundary-blurring weather patterns. In his artistic practice, Saraceno expands on the aesthetic experience as a synesthetic moment, encouraging the viewers to ponder the gamut and boundaries of our sensorial perception. The iridescent surface traces the sun’s rays, kaleidoscopically casting colours, shadows and reflections around. Air and light lend the sculpture its form, inviting a shift in our perceptual norms, engendering the imaginative capacities of humans to consider different modes of being and dreaming of different futures, that embodies a symbiotic relationship with the Earth, the sun and the elements.

Ukrainian pilots will start training on 4ª generation Western fighters in the United Kingdom, focused on the F-16

Ukrainian pilots will soon begin flight training for NATO's standard fourth-generation fighter operation, the UK government confirmed before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to London on Monday.
In February, the UK Prime Minister announced plans to develop a new training program for Ukrainian pilots to support their efforts to build a new Ukrainian air force with standard NATO F-16 jets.
This summer, the United Kingdom plans to host an elementary flight phase for Ukrainian pilots to learn basic training.

This will adapt the program used by UK pilots to provide Ukrainians with piloting skills that they can use on a different type of aircraft. This training goes hand in hand with the United Kingdom's efforts to work with other countries in the supply of F-16 jets - Ukraine's favorite fighters.
“This is a crucial moment in Ukraine's resistance to a terrible war of aggression that they did not choose or provoke. They need the sustained support of the international community to defend themselves against the flood of relentless and indiscriminate attacks that have been their daily reality for more than a year,” said UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
"We shouldn't disappoint them. The front line of Putin's war of aggression may be in Ukraine, but the flaws extend all over the world. It is in our interest to ensure that Ukraine is successful and that Putin's barbarism is not rewarded.

Next month, the United Kingdom will host a Ukraine Recovery Conference to galvanize international investment to support the reconstruction of Ukraine, promoting the emerging sectors where the country was thriving before Putin's large-scale invasion, such as clean energy and technology.

The day before his visit to London, Zelensky visited Germany, which promised its largest military aid package for Ukraine, valued at more than 2.7 billion euros.
It is also important to note that the United Kingdom confirmed last week that it provided Storm Shadow precision missiles to Ukraine. These are the first long-range cruise missiles in Ukraine's arsenal and have already been used by Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion, according to several reports.

At the Farnborough Airshow, Boom Supersonic presented a revised version of its supersonic aircraft. Instead of 55 passengers, the aircraft will now be able to carry 65 to 80 passengers, and instead of two engines, Boom Supersonic plans to equip the aircraft with four engines. For the launch customer United Airlines, however, nothing will change for the time being.
The U.S. airline has ordered 15 Boom Overture passenger aircraft from U.S. start-up Boom Supersonic. The first flights are planned for 2026, and the first passengers could not board until 2029. Flight times could change drastically: The planes are expected to make the New-York London route in 3:30 hours instead of 6:30 hours now. Tokyo-Seattle could shorten from 8:30 hours to 4:30 hours, and Los Angeles-Sydney could be done in 8 hours instead of 14:30.
The purchase price per jet is $200 million (about 165 million euros). There are no further financial details on the agreement. However, it includes a purchase option for 35 additional aircraft. Supersonic aircraft have disappeared from civil aviation since the early 2000s with the end of the Concorde. The name recalls an era when it was possible to fly from London to New York in just three hours.

This isn’t a book you can read in a hurry – you need time to get into it and remember who is who. In the novel we have Marion Graves set in early mid 1900’s, who wants to be a pilot. Move forward to 2014 - Hadley, is an actress who has been offered the role of playing Marion in a film based on her life. The 2 stories run parallel through the book telling us of their early lives & loves. Both have troubled backgrounds growing up.
Marions dad was the captain on The Josephina, an ill fated ship in the 1920’s which sank. They were all onboard on a family trip but when it came time to abandon ship her mother had disappeared leaving her twin babys (Marion & Jamie) behind. Her dad was left with a choice of throwing his babies into a lifeboat for strangers to bring up or jumping in with them. He chose the latter which meant he went to prison for neglecting his passengers & not staying onboard until the end. Marion and her twin brother Jamie were raised by their uncle who was a well known artist and often left them to their own devices. Caleb lived nearby and was a friend to both of them but he and Marion had a love relationship too. Caleb stays in and out of her life most of the way through the book. Marion is strongwilled and after watching & talking to some stunt pilots at an airshow decides that being a pilot is what she wants to do. Nobody will train her because she is a woman, women don’t fly planes. This is set during the early pioneering aviation events of people such as Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earheart. Marions dogged determination and the money and obsession of a man called Barclay McQueen enabled her to fulfil her dream. However, Barclay wanted to own & marry her. He became a huge thorn in her side and tried to control her.
War started and Marion joined the effort by going to England to fly planes to where they were needed. Marion takes us Through Prohibition, WW2, Montana to London
Jamie was different/opposite to Marion. He was quiet & disliked killing of any kind. He had gone to college and fallen in love with Sarah from a wealthy family in Seattle but the relationship ended when her domineering father who was into meat wholesale business discovered Jamie was a vegetarian. Jamie never stopped loving Sarah. Jamie was an excellent artist, like his Uncle, so eventually joined the war effort as an artist – drawing what he saw on and around ‘The Front’ for the American government.
Marion, after the war, wants to fly from north to south pole, starting in New Zealand. Her dream is achieved with financial help from Jamies daughter.
Hadleys life is nowhere near as interesting although she has a couple of things in common with Marion. Hadley's parents were killed in a plane crash when she was 2 & she was raised by her uncle.
She starts to do a little research on Marion's life to get into the film part & unearths some surprises about Marion
I much preferred the story of Marion the aviator. I found it interesting and absorbing. Hadley I started to skim through some of the dialogues and unnecessary descriptive information towards the middle of the book. So long in between time & chapters I couldn't remember who was who. There are 670 pages with a lot of words on each page. It took a long time to read. Marion is a fictional pilot (I had to look this up to check). This was a saga of a book which could have been condensed and still been good.
