Halloween Costumes Headcannons **Thirsty**

Mitch - Cop His shock is visible from across the room. He's leaning against the wall as if his sole job was to hold it up and when he sees you walk into the party his posture straightens almost immediately. You smirk to yourself as you greet people you know making your way around the party towards the open bar. You pour yourself a drink in a red solo cup and move to turn around and see if he'd left his spot. But before you could move you felt a body pressed up against your back and smelt Mitch's subtle cologne. "So how much jail time would I get for assaulting a police officer, officer?" He husks out into your ear making you shiver against him. You grinned at his approval of your halloween costume that you had agonized over which one to get, finally choosing on the tight revealing police officer costume. "Minimum 5 years but if you're good we'll let you out early." You purr to him and feel his erection twitch against your ass. "It'd so be worth it. The things I wanna do to you baby girl." He growled out into your ear before nipping at your lobe. "Show me Rapp." You gasp out as you lean back into him resting your head back on his shoulder. "But you just got here." He says softly. "Don't care lets go." You say quickly before grabbing his hand and dragging him out of the party and towards your apartment.

Marcus - Witch He tries his damned hardest to keep his gaze above your shoulders. But fuck is it hard. A witch's costume should not be that revealing. His eyes dart around the office and he can see that most of the other ladies in the office had opted for costumes similar to yours. Sarah was dressed as nurse with too short white dress, Diane was dressed as firefighter with a bright red crop top and suspenders attached to cut off jean shorts, and Leigh was dressed as a zombie with ripped and torn clothing that left nothing to the imagination. But while the other ladies all wore revealing clothing it was only your costume that had seemed to entrance Marcus. Your low cut dress revealed far more skin of your chest than Marcus had ever seen on you and he had seen you go undercover as a prostitute back in your earlier force days. And the hem of the dress was pulled up high to the middle of your thighs before it fell longer in the back revealing more of your shapely legs. Who knew he would find calf muscles attractive. Just then he felt a presence next to him and he turned to face your beaming smile. "Isnt this great?! Everyone's able to let loose for once." You said happily as you stood close to him. Marcus stifled his groan when his eyes fell to the tops of breasts that were on display and framed by pretty purple fabric. You cleared your throat and Marcus' eyes darted to yours to only see the satisfied smirk and dancing eyes of yours. "Like something you see Pike?" You purred softly to him and Marcus gulped watching as you stepped impossibly closer. "I-I don't what you're talking about." He answered quickly. "Shame, I guess I'll have to find another victim to put under my spell." You teased before looking around the room as if searching for a victim. Marcus gripped your elbow firmly in his hand making you look up at him shocked. "Don't you dare." He hissed out and you smirked up at him. "I've put a spell on you." You sung softly to him and you began to slowly and unnoticeably lead him out the room.

Francisco - Dia De Los Muertos “Mi Vida (my life), you look so fucking hot.” he grunted out softly as his hands gripped and bunched up the long black lace skirt of your dress. The material slid slowly up your legs and over your hips to bunch at your waist making you shiver. “Fuck you look so hot.” You gasp loudly as you feel his fingers swipe across your covered core and your body just melts underneath his attention. “You can thank Santiago later, he’s the one who said you’d appreciate this costume more than the other ones I had picked out.” you gasped out as your hands that were painted like bones came up to grip his shoulders. “Fuck that little shit. He knew it’d get me worked up at the party that I would have to do something.” Frankie grunted out as buried his face against the side of your neck trying to be mindful of the paint on your neck. “Mi vida I need to taste you while you’re in this costume. Por favor.” he pleads with you softly as he sinks to his knees in front of you. You gasp softly at the sight of him on his knees for you as your fingers card through his hair, your nails scrape along his scalp and he moans loudly as he buries his face against your cover core. Slipping a hand up the outer side of your leg he moves it to hook over his shoulder and your back leans back to press against the wall. “Fuck Frankie, please don’t tease.” you cry softly to him as your head falls back to thud against the wall. His fingers pull your panties to the side and his tongue flicks out against your folds making you groan loudly. “You’ve got to be quiet mi Vida.” he instructs you. You nod your head quickly and gasp as he once again buries his face in your core. Mewling softly your fingers resume their track through his hair as he works his mouth and tongue against you. Not long after you find yourself gasping for air and clutching at your skirt to keep it away from his face as you tumble over the edge of bliss. Frankie helps you come down from your high slowly and when he stands up he cups your face in his hands and presses a heated kiss to your lips before licking into your mouth. When the two of you go back out to the party Santiago calls out. “Oi! Couldn’t keep your hands off her could ya?” You frown over at him before looking at Frankie and chuckling softly. “What is it mi vida?” he asks and you lean up brushing your thumb against his lips. “You got some black lipstick on you.” you answer with a soft smirk.

Stiles - Inmate “You gonna cuff me officer? I’ve been a bad girl lately.” you husked into Stiles’ ear and felt him stiffen next to you as you leaned into him. He jerked around to look at you as well did Scott who had heard your words. The two of them stared at you in silent shock as they spotted the short tight orange jumpsuit you wore as your costume. Scott’s smirk was devious as he looked at first you and then turned to his best friend. Stiles just stood there with his mouth hanging open as he stared at you. Reaching forward you pressed your index finger to the underside of Stiles’ chin and closed it for him. Smirking sultrily at him you crossed your wrists in front of you and held them out to him. “Well officer?” you questioned. “Fuck me.” Stiles gasped out and his eyes widened before darting up to your face where he saw the wicked grin forming on your face. “That’s the plan Stilinski.” you teased around that wicked grin of yours. Stiles suddenly growled and grabbed the back of your head dragging you forward until his lips slanted across yours. You mewled against his mouth and pressed forward into him gripping onto his biceps for stability. Stiles backed you up against the wall and when you thought your head would connect with the wall his hand was there protecting you. “I’ll uh, I’ll just be over there Stiles.” Scott said quickly as he watched his best friend devouring you up against the wall. When Stiles pulled away he rested his forehead against yours. “I thought you were going to dress up as a cop like me?” he asked softly. You shrugged your shoulders and grinned up at him. “Lydia found this costume for me. Said it’d get a better reaction out of you.” you answered him just as breathless. “Fucking Lydia.” he grunted out as his hands came to grip tightly onto your hips and tugged you forward into him before he pressed you back into the wall. “No fucking Lydia. Fuck me.” you moaned out to him softly and he growled lowly in response. “Remind me to thank her for this.” he said and his finger came up and pulled at the collar of your costume.

Tequila - Cow (he’s bull) You grinned as you looked at yourself in the mirror. This was your last ditch effort to get Tequila to take you seriously when you flirt with him. If this didn’t work you were giving up on the clueless rodeo clown. Leaning forward you shifted the headband with your cow ears so that they sat correctly on your head. Champ had wanted to do a group halloween costume and had suggested Old McDonald’s Farm as the theme. He would of course be old McDonald and the rest of the field agents and Ginger would dress up as various animals and farm hands. You had thought Tequila would’ve chosen a farm hand like Whiskey had but when you had heard him going on and on about being a bull for his costume you had laughed because it was so fitting given his previous career. So you had conspired with Ginger to find you a costume that compliment his and imply you were a couple. Your main goal to clue Tequila in since he hadn’t picked up on any of the hints you had been giving him. When you walked into the bar that Champ had rented out for the Halloween party you grinned as you spotted Ginger dressed up at a horse before your eyes landed on Tequila standing next to her dressed up like a bull. He had done a really good job with finding black clothing but also the horns, and the large noticeable fake nose ring made you grin. Sidling up to him you watched as he turned and silently eyed your costume. You were dressed in a white shirt that you had painted with black large spots, as well as a short white tennis skirt that you had painted with black spots and black kitten heels. You had even fashioned a short white tail to the back of the skirt. “Well don’t you look moo-varlous!” Tequila said with a wide grin. Turning to him you smiled and flicked the fake nose ring and he jerked back slightly. “You’re just bull-tiful.” you teased back and watched as his eyes lit up in delight. He leaned closer to you and you felt your breath catch in your throat. “I know what this is.” he said softly to you and you tilted your head in curiosity. “What is it?” you asked hoping he would finally understand. “You’re trying to steal my title of best costume.” he said as he turned back to the bartender ordering another beer. You hung your head and knew you would have to be more direct with the clueless man. Reaching up you grabbing his chin between your thumb and index finger dragging it to face you. “No, I want to take the bull by the horns and show him how much I wanna be mounted.” you husked out to him before pressing your lips to his. Tequila didn’t move for a good few seconds and you began to feel unsure and as you pulled away he lunged at you nearly toppling the two of you to the ground. “You mean it?” he asked softly when he pulled away. “Of course I do idiot.” you scoffed at him and he pressed his lips to yours again. “Then let’s get outta here.” he begged you. “What about your title?” you teased him and he shook his head. “Don’t matter anymore.” he rushed out and began leading you out of the bar quickly.

Whiskey - Nurse “Well heeelllloooo nurse.” came the soft drawl of the field agent who had been tailing you ever since he almost barrelled into you in the hallway three weeks ago. You rolled your eyes and turned to face him on your bar stool. The little straw in your drink was clasped between your teeth and you silently surveyed him. He wasn’t dressed up in a costume for the halloween party that Statesman was throwing. “Did you wait all night to come here and say that?” you asked incredulously. His grin faltered a little bit and you smirked knowing you had tripped him up yet again. Running over the back of his neck he grimaced softly. “I might have.” he responded sheepishly and you couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him. Smiling up at him you watched as his eyes focus on your fingers playing with the fake stethoscope hung around your neck. You watched as his eyes slowly trailed down to the deep v neck of your costume and he gulped silently. “Need me to take your temperature agent?” you asked sultrily and his eyes darted back up to yours. “Or do you have an ailment that needs attending?” you asked with a wicked grin spreading over your lips. “Hmmm, there’s something on me that needs attending honey.” he husked out as he stepped closer to you. Your hand fell from your neck and landed at his hip, your fingers curled into his belt loops and tugged him closer to you with a jerk of your hand. “I can take you back to my place and do a full check.” you suggested sultrily to him and he smirked down at you. “I’d like that very much nurse. Can never be too cautious with your health.” he rasped at you and you shifted upwards pressing your lips to his. You hummed when you tasted the whiskey on his lips before he pressed in closer to you and caged you up against the bar. “Let’s get outta here agent.” you gasped out to him once you pulled away for air.

Isaac - Little Red Riding Hood “Well if it isn’t little Red Riding Hood. What are you doing out and about? Don’t you know the big bad wolf is on the prowl tonight?” Isaac asked with a wicked smirk on his face as he leaned in close to you. You scoffed at him and rolled your eyes as you took a sip of your drink. “You know I’m not dressed like this for your benefit right? It’s only because Scott wanted to do a stupid group costume.” you bit out to the werewolf. You had to admit he looked hot in his fake werewolf costume and it didn’t help that you had always found yourself attracted to him even before the bite. But now that he had been bitten and his new cocky attitude had emerged it had been easy to curb your feelings, slightly. “Oh c’mon red we both know that you dressed up just for me since I’m your rival.” he said into your ear and you tried your hardest to stop the shiver running down your spine. “You mean villain?” you scoffed at him and he grinned at you again. “Now how could I be the villain when I’ll want to do is eat you up?” he asked in a low tone and your eyes darted over to his and saw the heated look of desire in them. “Scarf boy! Lay off Little Red!” came Stiles’ shout from across the room and you felt as if you could kiss the lanky young man for saving you from Isaac. Isaac growled lowly and you watched him shoot a glare at Stiles. “Maybe some other time wolfie.” you said sarcastically and Isaac turned back to you with another grin. “Oh there’ll definitely be another time Little Red.” he said sultrily and you stepped back slightly before he grinned and walked away from you.

Raymond - Mechanic “And what is it you’re supposed to be?” you hear in his raspy British accent. Rolling your eyes as you turn you throw your arms out to your sides to show him your full costume. “Seriously Ray?” you asked on a scoff. His eyebrow quirks up as his eyes dance up and down your body clad in a pair of overalls with a red bandana tied around your hair and a pair of large gloves on your hands while a wrench, or what you think is a wrench sticks out of your pocket. When he doesn’t respond you huff at him and watch the smirk slip onto his face. “I’m a mechanic.” you said discouraged, you wondered if he was just teasing you once again or if he honestly didn’t get your costume. “Oh now I see it. A bit out of your scope of practice though isn’t it?” he asked softly and you furrow your eyebrows at him. “What do you mean? I work for Ros’ garage. I'm literally in that scope of practice.” you said confused and feeling exasperated by his teasing tone. “Well you’re an assistant to the boss of a garage. I’m pretty sure you have no clue what that tool in your pocket actually does.” he teased further as he stepped closer to you still with that insufferable smirk on his face. “Oh and like you do?” you asked huffily as your arms crossed over your chest in aggravation. “I know what that tool does. And better yet I know how to use another tool that you might be interested in.” he rasps out huskily to you and you feel the blush consume your cheeks as desire shoots straight down your spine. Leaning in closer to him you know you’re taking his bait but you can’t help it after so long you’ve wanted to act on these emotions and feelings that had developed ever since you met the Brit. “Hmmm, I might be interested. But that’s a big might.” you respond to him and he grins wolfishly at you making your breath catch in your throat. Feeling a surge of confidence you press your front to his and lean up into his face. “Gonna check under my hood for me huh Ray?” you whisper to him and suddenly his arms are around you caging you against his body and his lips are slanted against your own as he groans into your mouth. Your hands comes up to cup his cheeks and you whimper softly against him. “Jesus Ray! Why don’t you take her home before you give us all a show?!” calls out Mickey and you’re jerking away from Ray gasping for air to only see everyone eyeing you and your counterpart with gleeful expressions on their faces. Ray grabs a hold of your hand and nods his head at Mickey before dragging you from the room hurriedly. Once outside in the hall you press Ray up against the wall and lean up on tiptoe to press another heated chaste kiss to his lips. “You’re right I have no idea how to use the tool in my pocket.” you start to explain and one of your hands trails down from his chest to cup his erection against his pants. “But I do know how to use the one in your pocket.” you pur to him and he groans low in his throat before he’s pulling you out of Mickey’s house and towards his car.

Forrest - Not a costume but a newer dress The air is growing crisp and cool as you walk out of the general store. Autumn was quickly falling over Franklin County and you eagerly await for the leaves to begin changing and falling from the trees. Pulling your shawl further up your shoulders you smile as you pass Mr. Henry as you make your way down to the end of the line of shops. “Well look who we have here Forrest.” comes a familiar call and you look up to spot Howard and Forrest Bondurant stepping out of their car. Smiling kindly to them you stop not far from where Forrest leans against the side of the car watching you. “Hello boys. How are you this morning?” you ask politely. “Doing mighty fine now that we’ve seen you, aren’t we Forrest?” Howard replies teasing you and you shake your head at him. “That’s enough Howard, go get the supplies.” Forrest says gruffly and Howard wiggles his eyebrows at you before leaving to go to the shop. You shake your head at him as he passes you and you turn back to Forrest smiling softly at him. “Don’t let him get to you Forrest, he's only just teasing.” you say kindly before you step off the walkway in front of the shops. You don’t move much closer to him knowing that he’s not one for affection or any type of emotion really. “Is that a new dress?” he asks through a grunt and you feel your eyes widen slightly surprised by his attention to detail about you. You look down at your dress and your hand slides down the front of it smoothing the fabric. “Why yes it is. Thank you for noticing.” you say kindly as a blush spreads over your cheeks. You watch him step a little closer to you and you take in breath and hold it wondering what he would do. “You look nice.” he grunts out and you can’t stop the wide happy smile that spreads over your lips. The blush that had formed over your cheeks grows in intensity at his words and you watch as he falters at your reaction to his words. “Thank you Forrest.” you breathe out softly and take a brave step closer to him resting a hand on his forearm gently. “That’s very kind of you.” you say warmly as your smile turns softer. “Will I see you at the gathering tonight?” you ask boldly and watch as his eyes widen a little. He grumbles softly and tilts his head down to the ground and fiddles with his hat. Smiling down at the ground in front of you you take a step back from him giving him the space he needed. “I’ll be seeing you Forrest.” you say softly before moving along down the road towards where you lived grinning softly to yourself.

ADhD, something to think about.

A friend sent me this: (I’m copy/pasting, mistakes are the authors.)

“Kan, saw this on FB, thinking of you.”

I was asked a while ago by a friend to share my thoughts on ADHD, and what I believe about this unique neuro-diversity that we all seem to have. It has taken me some time to put it into words, but here is the basic gist of it and I hope it can help someone to understand the “why” behind what we all experience.

ADHD is not a curse, It is not broken, it is NOT a malfunction of the brain or a “Mis-wiring”. It is not from your mother smoking cigarettes when you were in utero, and it is NOT from too much television as a child. ADHD is a Nuero-diversity. It is a different wiring of the brain as it relates to the body and to information collection AND most importantly it has a purpose! Before I get to that piece though, let me share with you what I KNOW about ADHD.

ADHD is a label that we have assigned to individuals that present with a specific set of symptoms associated with a diagnosable neuro-diversity. These symptoms can include things like distractibility, forgetfulness, inattention, hyper-focused attention, emotional storms, irritability, feelings of worthlessness, active or overactive imagination, tardiness or skewed senses of time, imposter syndrome, out of control thoughts, and severely low self-esteem.

Recently, research studies have identified three (3) aspects of ADHD that are experienced by almost everyone with this neuro-diversity and not experienced by almost none without it.

Interest-based nervous system: Not just interest-based attention, but your entire nervous system functions differently based on your level of interest. When you find something truly interesting it will actually energize you. Sleep is irrelevant, Food is a fleeting thought. You are sustained by interest. Have you ever found yourself up way past time to go to bed, forgot that you had to go to the bathroom, or didn’t eat, just because you were so interested in something? Yeah, me too.

Emotional Hyper-Arousal: Imagine this like you have a volume knob for “Emotions” and yours is turned up 5 notches higher than the neuro-typical people around you. Your highs are higher, your lows are lower. Merely funny is hilarious and mildly sad is sorrowful. Everything is extreme. Not worth humor is funny and not worth heartache is indeed sad. Every emotion felt is more-than.

Rejection-sensitive-dysphoria: Basically, we are hypersensitive to rejection, from anyone. It doesn’t really matter if we consciously care about the individual or group that is enacting the rejection. We are just hyper-sensitive to being rejected by anyone for any reason. Even if we don’t want to be part of the club, we are sensitive to the club not wanting us as a member kind of thing.

Now if we combine these symptoms and aspects we begin to see some pretty obvious and reoccurring traits that cause problems in daily life.

Imposter syndrome: Minimizing our accomplishments and maximizing our failures or faults. If we succeed, then it was easy or luck, but if we fail it is because we are flawed or broken and we are totally responsible.

Hyper-focus: I can be focused on something that I am interested in, but cannot manage to pay attention to a board meeting. I am all about the next book coming out, but forget my anniversary.

Emotional storm: I have a thousand thoughts running through my head and each one has an emotion that I have to feel as it passes and therefore I feel a thousand emotions in the span of a few seconds and cannot differentiate between them.

There are many many more that I don’t think that I need to list. You can see the patterns I am sure.

What if…..?

What if ADHD was natural?

What if ADHD was not ADHD, but something else?

What if ADHD was NOT a Deficit or a Disorder, but an adaptation?

Scientific research now suggests that what we know as ADHD is actually an evolutionary adaptation to a Hunter/Gather lifestyle.

In a natural environment, where there are predators and prey, where the rustling of leaves, or the flash of game in the periphery, or the trickling of water heard, could mean the difference between life or death, it is actually an extreme benefit to have an overabundance of involuntary attention. It is a bonus to be hyper-aware (distractable).

This is why so many that have ADHD wired brains find solace in natural environments. There is so much to “Pull” our attention, but so little to “Pay” attention to. We find ourselves recharged by walks in the forest or sitting near a babbling brook. This is our natural born element and so it invigorates us.

So why so few of us then? Well, let's look at that. Darwin’s theories of evolution state that: If there is a mutation in an individual that is part of a species that makes that individual more likely to survive, then that mutation will be passed along to its offspring and therefore make the offspring more likely to survive than it’s counterparts of the same species and thus, the mutation will eventually, though the process of natural selection, be distributed to the entire species and will no longer be a mutation, just part of the species. For example: if a bird has a mutation that increases its beak size and that increases its survivability, then eventually the entire species will have larger beaks. So, let's look back at 20,000 years into our human history. Everyone that existed on the planet were hunter/gathers. It is very likely that at that time, the majority of individuals were also what we call today, ADHD. Then one day, someone decided that it would be a good idea to plant & farm & build walls & raise livestock & stay in one place.

Now we have these sedentary people that are NOT hunting or gathering in dangerous environments. They are protected by walls and removed from danger.

However, we still have all these ADHDers that cannot stand being still, so they are still hunting and gathering and putting themselves in danger.

Who is more survivable now?

Fast forward 20,000 years…..97% of all humans are sedentary and only 3% are ADHDers.

ADHD is not new, it is not made up by Pharma, it has always been here, just never called the same thing. The first mention of an individual that appeared to display ADHD symptoms that I found was from the writing of Hippocrates, also known as the father of modern medicine, he stated: The patient has quickened responses to sensory experience, but also less tenaciousness because the soul moves on quickly to the next impression.

Back then, “soul” was the word for mind and “impression’ was the word for thought. So what he was saying is ...The patient has heightened responses to external stimulation but has less follow-through because the mind moves on quickly to the next thought.

If that is not ADHD I don’t know what is.

This is not a bad thing though. All we need to do is look throughout history to see ADHDers in action. We can take the symptomatology that we know now and apply it to historical figures and we see that the most innovative and influential individuals in history were probably ADHDers.

ADHD is not the “fault” it’s the exception. We have always been here and we have always been the ones that are changing the world.

There is statistically a higher percentage of ADHD in America than in Europe. Researchers believe that this is because our founding fathers and the immigrants that are our heritage had the out-of-the-box impulsiveness to pack up and go across an entire ocean to make a better life!

ADHD is not a curse, it is not a disorder, society has the disorder because as much as it touts individuality, it is only acknowledged once an individual complies with the obligation of normalcy. You cannot be creative unless you can get to work on time. You cannot be innovative unless all your bills are paid. Blah Blah Blah….

Being born with ADHD is like being born with a beautiful pair of raven black angel wings. Imagine for a moment how that would be. You would be shunned as a freak. Called an abomination. You would try to hide your birthright if only to “Fit in” or be “normal”, and always throughout all of the insults and put-downs, through all of the pain and sorrow, all you would have to do is spread those beautiful black wings and soar….

We are not the problem. We are the solution. We are the R&D while everyone else trudges on the assembly line. We are the inventors and the visionaries, while the neuro-typical are content with the status quo. We take the risks and run the chance….sometimes to our detriment, but also sometimes to glory.

Doubt yourself all you want. Tell us all that “your” ADHD is a disorder or a disability, but make no mistake…..You are amazing.

For as long as I can remember, the Vietnamese sandwich known as banh mi, has been a part of my life. Even as a Chinese American, this stuff would always be around my family and friends. It was cheap, easy to sell/make and tasted better than most American sandwiches. For $5, you can get at least four – one for each person in the typical 4-person Asian family. It was the go-to fill-up snack because it was cheaper than anything at McDonald's. Even if we didn't have a store-bought sandwich, we'd have some variation of the banh mi. As a kid in elementary school, I'd have my mom's mutated version which consisted of thick slices of the Vietnamese meatloaf known as cha, liverwurst (American pâté) and mayonnaise – smacked between two pieces of Wonder bread. On fishing trips with family friends, there'd be an endless supply of Capri Sun and banh mi in the cooler. Hungry? Have a banh mi! We'd pick that sandwich up with our fish and worm-flavored hands and go to town. My Lao aunt in Fresno also ran a small sandwich business right out of her kitchen and guess what we got to eat every time we were there - banh mi. Banh mi was seriously around so often it was like a brother to me – always there to wrestle and play video games with.

So you can understand why one would take a hiatus from the beloved sandwich. I was tired of it. After I graduated from high school, I don't think I touched banh mi unless I had to. As a college student, I made quick trips to Little Saigon to satisfy my broke ass. To me the food was nearly forgotten as I found love in other things such as noodles. Then around 2006, Vietnamese sandwich shops started popping up like the current food trucks as more Vietnamese residents and immigrants moved out of Rosemead and El Monte. On Valley Blvd. alone, you'll find at least a dozen places selling banh mi, including chains like Banh Mi Che Cali and Lee Sandwiches. This was the mainstream for the people of San Gabriel Valley and certainly not earth-shaking news.

Then earlier this week, my friend sent me a link to a New York Times article titled "The Vietnamese Sandwich. Banh Mi in America" by a Jordan Michelman. This was published after last year's banh mi craze in New York City which left me and I'm sure many others, scratching our head. Interesting considering most people look to New York as the pioneer of trends, especially fashion and food. This isn't the first time an article on banh mi has been published. But it was the first time I realized how long it has taken Vietnamese culture to be recognized in the history of America – especially since the Vietnamese have been here as early as the late 1960s. A few decades for New York Times to "discover" this sandwich? You don't see Jonathan Gold writing an article every 6 months on banh mi to remind us that it exists. Does something have to go through the New York "fad machine" before it gets any attention? Even in Los Angeles, the banh mi mutant can be found at places like Six (banh mi burger), Mendocino Farms (pork belly banh mi) and Nom Nom Truck (banh mi tacos). But I thought to myself, this is indeed a great time to really advertise the shit out of this delicious, Vietnamese sandwich... and really aggregate the credit it deserves.

Banh mi may be big in New York and Los Angeles right now, but it isn't big until it goes national. And when it comes to sandwiches, there's no one more sandwichy than Jared Fogle's Subway nation. Not sure why I even linked to Subway... you've got to be from space if you haven't heard of it. I like to have fun when I eat – especially with corporate places like Hometown Buffet, Souplantation and Yoshinoya. So I decided to have some fun with Subway and find out if I can actually make the Vietnamese sandwich an American favorite. But what do you call this new potential menu item?

Well, if a sandwich is a "Sammy", then a banh mi must be a "Bammy"!

On a random weeknight, I find myself standing in the most depressing line ever at Subway. There are five of us, heads tilted up 45 degrees staring at the menu of bland food. Is this what we as Americans resort to? A life of 9-6? 2 hour commutes? Buying goods by bulk at Costco? Lunches at Subway? Do I want to pay $5, $6 or $7 for a foot long blandwich? Should I have the blandwich with teriyaki sauce or the ham & bland sandwich ? The menu is simply comprised of words put up to disguise the word "bland" and there is no difference in what you order because it won't have any taste period. When a "sandwich artist" asks me what else I'd like to add to my sandwich, I usually respond with, "flavor."

But actually, as I'm standing in line with the other customers waiting for toasted boredom to be served, I smile a little. I have an advantage over the other customers and employees - and they don't even know it. I'm equipped with an actual banh mi sandwich from Chinatown's Buu Dien, some Maggi sauce, fresh jalapeno slices, scrambled eggs from home and some real Vietnamese pate. Yes! And tonight's challenge is to see whether or not I can make an actual Subway sandwich edible and dare I say, as tasty as a Vietnamese banh mi.

It's now my turn to order and I order a toasted black forest ham and turkey Foot Long for $6, which by the way is equivalent to five banh mi sandwiches at your average Vietnamese joint. I wanted to keep this as authentic to Subway's ingredients and build. I picked the black forest ham because it is the closest in color and taste to the pink, headcheese (gio thu) and BBQ pork (xa xiu) used in banh mi. I picked the turkey because it is the closest in color and taste to the grey meatloaf known as cha. For the toppings, I added cucumber, cilantro, pickled jalapeno slices, salt & pepper and a thin line of mayonnaise. No oil, vinegar or whatever liquids they offer. I asked the "sandwich artist" not to fold the sandwich over and F up the innards. They even kept it served open face for me and placed it on a tray. I'm pretty sure they considered me crazy. Love it. Haha.

I then drew an imaginary DMZ line to distinguish the Northern and the Southern region of the sandwich. On top is Subway's Sammy using original store ingredients plus pate and Maggi Sauce vs. SaigonWay's Bammy with the traditional fixings.

Subway's Bammy - plain bread - ham - turkey - cucumber - canned, pickled jalapeños - cilantro - mayonnaise - pate - Maggi sauce

SaigonWay's Banh Mi - plain bread - ham - turkey - cucumber - fresh jalapeño slices - cilantro with stem - pickled radish & carrots - mayonnaise - pate - Maggi sauce - fried egg (optional, it's what I love adding to my banh mi)

Subway's "Sammy" For the first time in a long while, I felt fear. The last time from a serving of deep fried insects at a food stall in Cambodia. I had prepped myself with a few neck cracks and got my gag reflexes ready. I grabbed the sandwich... crumbs from the shitty bread landed on the tray. What am I doing? I took a bite and not to my surprise... there was absolutely no flavor. There was so much bland matter due to the sawdust bread and processed meat - I couldn't taste anything! Maggi Sauce is used to PROVIDE flavor. But yet it could not provide this time – it let me down. I put this sandwich down after the 2nd bite. Even a foot long of Cambodian fried insects had more flavor.

SaigonWay's "Bammy" Now, on to the real test. I opened the sandwich and made sure everything was evenly distributed. It was the moment I've been waiting for. Actually the moment every American slave of the corporate lunch cafeteria known as Subway was waiting for. If I succeeded, I knew that I have done something for my country. I had at least provided ONE item on Subway's menu that actually had something called flavor. I took a bite, and I have to say, it was a familiar taste. Even though the meat wasn't the right kind, the balance of Maggi Sauce, fried egg, pate, fresh jalapeno, fresh cilantro and fresh daikon and carrots made so much sense in that sawdust bread. I actually ate half of this and partially enjoyed it. All Subway has to do is offer a few more ingredients that really don't cost anything! But you say the words pate or liverwurst and you'll lose customers. And what in the world is Maggi sauce?

My work wasn't finished tonight though. This is my palate, and I know what I'm looking for in a sandwich. The true test though was finding out whether or not the actual Subway sandwich artists would eat my fixed-up version of their blandwich. I wouldn't go in peace until I had them try it. I waited for the right moment when the customers parted with their foot longs and approached this young man. We'll call him Justin. Within a few minutes and persuasive words, I had him sitting down at the table with the "Sammy" and "Bammy" in front of him.

Justin: "What am I eating?" Me: "You're going to eat a Subway take on a Vietnamese sandwich." Justin: "What's in it?" Me: "Oh nothing really. Just your meats and veggies and a few extras." Justin: "You sure?" Me: "Dude, I'm not trying to kill you man. Even if I was, you've got cameras rolling."

Justin actually went in and took a big bite, making sure his gums made sweet love with that sandwich. He took a few bites and then looked at me.

Me: "And?" Justin: "Nothing. It's bland man!" Me: "Of course it's bland. It's Subway." Justin: "..........." Me: "Last one, try my version."

Like a good employee, Justin looked to see that there were no hungry patrons queuing up. With a reluctant look, he picked up the "Bammy" and sank his teeth in once more. But this time, to my surprise, he raised his eyebrows slightly and his eyes widened. And there was a slight bob of satisfaction.

Me: "And....?" Justin: "This is actually pretty good. I like the taste. What's in it?" Me: "Subway's ham and turkey, fresh jalapeno, fresh cilantro, pickled radish and carrots, fried egg and the special Maggi Sauce." Justin: "It tastes fresh. Oh man, that egg is real nice." Me: "Yeah that's key man." Justin: "Alright man, are we done? I gotta get back to work." Me: "Thank you."

One down, and a whole nation to go. Is there hope for the American palate? Whether or not Subway actually decides to put this on their menu, I may not live long enough to see the revolt against bland food. I threw away the food and started packing up. As I headed out, Justin said:

Justin: "Hey man, what's that sauce you put in that sandwich?" Me: "It's called Maggi sauce." Justin: "What is it?" Me: "Flavor."

Subway, dreams of flavored food can come true. Look I've done the POP (point-of-purchase) displays for you! Yes, I'm an ad guy! We can also start rolling your new Jared spots right away.

"Hello, I'm Jared. Remember me? I used to weigh 450 lbs. I'm over in the Far East to advertise Subway's new sandwich, "The Bammy". I've cut out the 14 hour flight for you and endured some of the roughest conditions to bring you Vietnam's delicious sandwich. We use only the freshest, greenest cilantro. Guys.... can we cut. I feel some leeches in my pants."

"Hi again, it's me Jared. I've also cut out the vicious Saigon traffic for you by riding helmet-less with my buddies Tuan and Huan. I almost wet my khakis like a little girl trying to cross the streets of Saigon! Where we going guys? My mom's expecting me home for dinner."

So, if you saw "The Bammy" on the Subway menu, would you eat it? The truth is, you'll never see this on the Subway menu just as you'll never see a delicious shawarma, torta, cemita. Even if it was on the menu, you know it wouldn't be good haha. I would take any of those ANY DAY of the week over anything from Subway. But surprisingly, as diverse as America is, the Subway people of Milford, Connecticut still feel that their current menu is a good representation of what the American palate craves. So Subway, would you like your "Bammy" toasted or not toasted?

I have a question regarding car insurance. I'm 29 years old. I've been in 3 car accidents but was not at fault for any of them (2 of the times my car was sitting still! lol) and I've never gotten a ticket for any of those accidents. I used to have insurance through State Farm, full coverage for a 2004 Jeep Liberty that cost 50-60 a month in upstate NY. While driving to NYC one winter I got a speeding ticket, my first ticket ever! I was going I think 82(?) in a 65. This was just before I moved to NYC, and because I got the ticket in a podunk little county I was driving through I had no idea what the name was, the ticket flew out my door and I lost it. I figured they would mail me something else to tell me the payment was late but I never received anything else about it. Well I found out later it was because I moved, even though I moved about 2 months after the fact they wait quite a while to send another notice, and I never received it. Thus, my license was suspended but I never knew. I never got caught driving without it either. So I moved here in 2007 with my Jeep which I was very behind payments for, and then it got towed away for alternate side parking BS. I could have borrowed the money back then to pay to get it out but I let it go. Alright so long story short, I don't have the truck, it was auctioned. I'll be done paying for it through a collection agency settlement offer this May. If I had kept the truck, I would be paying 200+ more a month than I pay now, and I wouldn't have been done paying it til August 2011. Plus I would have had to pay to catch it up the 3 months I was behind, plus pay my boyfriends brother back who was willing to lend me the money to get it out of the car jail (lol) I had the suspension lifted last July so I could rent a car, again no issues. So I'm thinking of buying a 2,000 car (cash! I learned my lesson) in June when I'm done paying for the truck and I want to get no fault insurance.
