Pablo - Silver - Unit 1 Part C
ZAs a part of our film project, we went to see the exhibition ‘Get Up, Stand Up, Now!’ at Somerset House on the 15th of June 2019.
The event was a celebration of Black British Artists since the Windrush landed in 1948. The exhibition included a wide variety of art forms including painting, sculpture, music, film and even interactive computer instillations. It was different to other exhibitions I have seen due to the sheer number of elements involved, and the amalgamation of traditional African styles, contemporary art styles and the energy of rebellion created an unpredictable yet enjoyable atmosphere.
One artwork that particularly struck me was Zak Ove’s “Umbilical Progenitor.” The 2018 sculpture is made from a mixture of found objects that include a 1960s NASA spacesuit and African beads. It also includes cast graphite hands and feet as well as a blue resin cast face. The piece merges traditional African styles with a sci-fi element, which perhaps gives the message of how these African styles are more versatile than people often expect. I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of this work but the sci-fi element was the most memorable, with the glowing blue head and the odd looking baby on the back.

Another work that I particularly liked was Rhea Storr’s 2018 short film “A Protest, A Celebration, A Mixed Message.” The film was shot on 16mm film and explores themes of protest and race. It features Storr narrating over shots of Leeds West Indian Carnival and Storr herself in full carnival costume in rural places. The piece questioned the morality of carnival and it becomes a spectacle for white people. It also asks questions about the visibility of ‘black bodies’ in rural spaces. I particularly liked the montage segments wherein Storr used fast paced editing of the Leeds West Indian Carnival alongside music to create bursts of energy.

I was amazed by how the artist’s work interacted with each other, and how the exhibition let you see how themes and movements were born because of this. However, because of the number of artworks it was hard to focus properly on each individual one, and therefore it sometimes felt like you hadn’t really seen some of the smaller ones properly.

From this I have learnt how art can be quite communal and I will take away the idea that a piece of art is hardly ever alone and is often part of a movement or style that has been contributed to by other artists..
Here is a discussion I took part in after the exhibition where I shared my opinion on the exhibition:
