“He was the messenger of a great spirit,” says René Montaño, a Comcaac linguist. [...] Montaño is addressing the entire community at a cultural festival in the Comcaac territory in what is today northwestern Mexico. He talks about how their ancestors learned that xnois (Zostera marina), a type of seagrass also known as eelgrass, could feed their people.
“Zostera marina is paramount for us,” Montaño says. “There are other parts of the world where it barely exists, but here, in this channel, there’s plenty. [...]”
Comcaac [...] fishers learned that it was a food that would give them the necessary strength to survive long ways at sea, and the different ways it could be prepared were passed down from generation to generation. In the past few decades, this knowledge has been largely neglected. Today, the Comcaac people are breathing new life into it.
Comcaac environmentalists Alberto Mellado and Erika Barnett [...] have been developing a study since 2020 [...]. The Infiernillo Channel, located between the Sonora coast and Tiburón Island -- the largest island in Mexico and a sacred site for the Comcaac people -- is a Ramsar site, meaning it’s a wetland of key global importance. It features seagrass meadows, mangrove estuaries, and small patches of coral reefs where various marine species feed. [...] The channel is also home to 81 species of invertebrates endemic to the Gulf of California, and various threatened species, like totoabas (Totoaba macdonaldi) and sea turtles. [...]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In early 2022, as part of this initiative, the team created an event that brought together chefs and biologists from Sonora, the U.S. and Spain who were interested in the culinary uses of xnois and in the conservation of seagrass. There, the Comcaac cooks shared their knowledge about the ancestral ways of preparing xnois: ground by hand to make flour for tortillas or tostadas, or as a drink made with warm water combined with honey [...]. Newer ways of preparing xnois were also on show, such as in energy bars, hotcakes, and bread in combination with wheat flour. [...]
Today, it’s Comcaac [...] like Laura Molina working to promote the benefits of xnois [...]. In a workshop [...], she flattens small dough balls into tortillas and toasts them over a fire. She says the first time she heard about this ancestral food was from her grandmother. Years later, she asked her mother to teach her how to prepare it. [...]
Erika Barnett says her great-grandparents were probably the last ones in the family to harvest eelgrass for the seeds. She says the fact that her father, now 76, can once again eat food prepared with xnois represents a great success. “The last time he’d eaten it, he was 7 years old,” she says. “Most young people have never tasted it, so this effort is really rescuing our culture.” [...] “The guys and my colleagues didn’t know how to prepare xnois, but I’m happy because we’re teaching them and the kids and adults who want to learn,” Molina says. “This is thanks to our ancestors. [...] [T]hey opened the path that led us here.”

ok they just left the pods, here’s my current thoughts on everyone
brittany & kenneth: i actually think they’re super cute and fit together well, and they lowkey have a crazy coincidental number of thing in common
jimmy & chelsea: they deserve each other that’s all i’m gonna say
laura & jeramey: i think they’re cute but tbh we didn’t really see any of them in the pods?? i feel like we saw more footage of him and sarah which is weird. but i love laura for how she treated jess and sarah. she’s definitely a girls girl and i hope jeramey is genuine
ad & clay: tbh after the matthew fiasco i cannot get a read on them. if they’re both being genuine then i think they could be the amber and barnett of this season and be a really good fit but i’m scared clay just wants a mom lol
amy & johnny: tbh they’re kinda boring but i think they’re also the most genuine and the best fit. they kind of feel like lauren and cameron in the way that they always were sure about each other

“Jolán Roe” (Hungary 1968)
Hungary legalized first-trimester abortion on demand and second-trimester abortion in various circumstances in 1956. Before then, abortion was only legal in applicable maternal health indications.
The Hungarian abortion laws instated in 1956 permitted abortion on demand in the first trimester (and until 18 weeks for unmarried teenagers 16–20.) Later abortions were still allowed for medical indications. The law was later loosened even further.
As a whole, Hungary saw a significant increase in the rate of abortions, which at one point outnumbered the country’s live births. With this came a massive increase in conditions such as placenta previa, premature labor and other conditions, showing the effects of abortion legalization as a third variable for future obstetric complications. Some effects, however, were more direct. Despite then-stringent regulation to protect maternal health (trimester limits, requiring that all abortions be done in sterile hospitals by experienced obstetricians, and typically keeping abortion clients at the hospital until the day after the operation), women still died from legalized abortion-on-demand.
One case of this was a woman who was reported to an Obstetrical Register and noted in a case report years later. She was not given a name in the report but will be referred to here as Jolán Roe.
Jolán underwent a legal abortion in a Hungarian hospital in 1968. Even with all of the safeguards in place (which dramatically put the standards in most places with legal abortion today to shame), she outlived her baby by less than three weeks. On the 19th day after her abortion, Jolán committed suicide.
The study examining cases of maternal death in Hungary from legal abortion acknowledged and recorded her case, but chose to exclude her from their estimate of maternal deaths. Apparently this was because they didn’t consider Jolán’s suicidal ideation to be direct enough of a result despite now-abundant evidence linking abortion to risk of suicide. (This raises the question of how many women and girls may have been excluded from attempts to estimate complication rates if their symptoms were thought to be “indirect” or if they suffered mental health problems.)
Dozens of other women reported in the study died of various causes such as embolism, sepsis, peritonitis and anesthesia complications.
Others who suffered mental health problems and committed suicide after abortion include Stacy Zallie, Carol Cunningham, Arlin Dela Cruz, Sandra Kaiser, Jade Rees, Emma Beck, Ashley Barnett, Haley Mason, Ashli Blake, Charlotte Dawson, Laura Grunas, “Sandra Roe,” “Sylvie Roe,” “Stacy Roe” and Jiah Khan.

Eliseo Barnett begins the short trip from the little town of Punta Cheuca to the vast Isla de Tiburon -- the largest island in the Gulf of California and part of the Indigenous Comcaac territory. [...] Erika Barnett [...] watches dozens of herons, seagulls and small coastal birds bask in the shallow waters [...]. Beyond them stretches a dense mass of green leaves -- part of a huge mangrove estuary on Tiburon Island. It’s one of about a dozen interconnected stands in the Infiernillo Channel. A narrow stretch of ocean between the island and the Sonoran coast, entirely within Comcaac territory, the channel is known for its biodiversity and abundant seagrass meadows and is a protected wetland area.
Mangroves cover some 960 hectares — or nearly 2,400 acres — of the channel.
“It’s like a kindergarten,” Barnett said.
A local conservation leader, she compared the mangrove forest to a nursery, providing a protected habitat for important marine species like crabs, shrimp and fish, as well as birds and sea turtles. [...]
It all starts with collecting mangrove propagules — the long, slender green and brown stalks that grow from mangrove flowers — from the estuaries and beaches in the Infiernillo Channel. Walking along the beach on Tiburon Island, Erkia Barnett occasionally stoops down to pick up a stray mangrove propagule. She collects the ones that wash ashore. [...] “It occurred to us to pick them up and keep them” until they sprouted roots, she said. After propagating the plants, her family took them to the El Paraiso estuary nearby.
The conservation team’s current project is much the same — collecting, propagating and reforesting the plants — but on a larger scale. This year, they collected more than 6,000 plants from the channel. [...]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Climate change is one of the biggest factors impacting the mangrove forests,” Barnett said. Increased heat, drought and rising sea levels are all taking a toll on the plants.
“It is the extreme of extremes, my goodness,” said ecologist Laura Smith Monti, with the Arizona-based Borderlands Restoration Network and The University of Arizona. “The mangroves stands in the Infiernillo Channel are the northernmost mangroves that occur on the West coast for sure.” [...]
And so far, the stands in the Infiernillo Channel are relatively healthy, likely because the protection afforded by the Comcaac community, Monti said. [...] The Comcaac have relied on these mangroves for thousands of years — using them as a source of food, medicine and building materials. [...] This year, after the plants grow large enough in the water-filled Coke bottles, they will be transplanted into soil for another six months or so — a new technique Barnett learned from one of the few other mangrove conservation teams in the region. [...] “It’s something relatively new,” said Milka Valenzuela, who has been running the mangrove reforestation project at the El Soldado estuary near the beach town of San Carlos since 2017. [...]
“I want to continue so that my children and my nieces and nephew might want to follow my example and continue taking care of the mangrove and the environment here in our territory,” [Barnett] said. “Because this ecosystem is important now just for our people, but for the world.”

Stacy Zallie, 21 (USA 2002)
Tumblr media
19-year-old Stacy Zallie was a caring young college student with dreams for her future. She dreamed of being an elementary school teacher and having children someday. But when Stacy was pregnant, she was coerced into undergoing a legal abortion.
Stacy underwent the first-trimester abortion at Steven Chase Brigham’s “American Medical Services” (actually an abortion facility) in Cherry Hill, New Jersey on July 6, 2001. She was 3–6 weeks pregnant. She was provided with a “Fact Sheet on Surgical Abortion” which did not address many of the risks of abortion, including major depression or suicide. Studies have proven that women and girls who have abortions are far more at risk for many mental health problems, including but not limited to addiction and depression.
The so-called fact sheet actually came from Michael Burnhill (of the National Abortion Federation) and Planned Parenthood. Stacy’s father has been trying to hold Planned Parenthood and the Guttmacher Institute responsible for the shortcomings of the “Fact Sheet,” so far to no avail.
Stacy kept the abortion a secret, but her family noticed an alarming change in her behavior and personality. While she was still underage, she began heavily drinking to numb the pain she felt from the guilt and regret. Her family tried to get her into therapy, but Stacy resumed her drinking binges and continued to deteriorate. She attempted suicide at least 4 times, not counting the final attempt resulting in her death.
On October 1, 2002, just days before she was scheduled to be a bridesmaid in her brother's wedding, Stacy tried to kill herself again. This time, she did manage to end her life. She was barely 21 years old.
The Zallie family didn’t learn about the abortion until it was too late. They sued Brigham for failing to warn Stacy about the psychological risks and for failing to make sure the abortion was consensual.
Stacy’s father, George Zallie, founded the Stacy Zallie Foundation to help provide post-abortion care and support to all who need it. He has intentionally avoided including a stance on abortion in the foundation’s mission statement because he did not want anyone who needed help to feel unwelcome. (Some abortion supporters, however, were still angered that he dared to acknowledge the negative mental health impact of abortion.) He hopes that the Stacy Zallie Foundation can save others from sharing his beloved daughter’s fate.
Others who committed suicide after abortion include Carol Cunningham, 15-year-old Sandra Kaiser, 19-year-old Arlin Dela Cruz, Haley Mason, Jade Rees, Emma Beck, Jiah Khan, Ashli Blake, Charlotte Dawson, Ashley Barnett, 18-year-old “Sandra Roe” and Laura Grunas.
(If anyone reading this is considering suicide, this is your sign not to do it. There is help and I promise people care about you.)
