Stuck in a Rut?
The story behind this photo is worth a million words. With my lack of brevity, I could expound on it with that many words, but I won’t. This is my beloved son, Larry Wallace, who assumed he was far enough from the lake as he seeded his pastures, but, unfortunately, he ran over an underground spring that literally pulled the tractor in and got stuck — a HUGE “stuck in a rut”. Are you feeling…

Today in meta: Mister Milquetoast himself.
Hassel, Brassius, if you could stay in your lovely lawnside Artazon house for TEN DAMN MINUTES whilst I talk about someone else, I'd appreciate that. Love you kings, stay gay, I'll be back for you real soon. <3
Instead, it's the Celestial meta debut of this bitch!
Tumblr media
You know him, you love him, it's Larry, and I wish to strip him down to his ATOMS he's so interesting, but I'm going to start simple: birds. The dichotomy of birds.
Let's take a peek at his Elite Four squad - I'm not going to analyse the gym one, because it's half a team, but you'll see that it matters anyway in a minute.
This is his lovely team:
Tumblr media
Now, you probably know what I've said before about the penultimate slot in a full team, and especially Hassel's - how it's meant to represent the heart and personality of the trainer. And that rings perfectly true for our favourite salaryman, too, if we take a look at Staraptor's Scarlet dex entry:
Tumblr media
That's Larry, solitary and resilient against whatever the world throws at him. And of course, Staraptor is Normal/Flying, both of Larry's specialties. Even the Intimidate ability is relevant, as according to his official bio on the Pokemon website, Larry becomes 'unsettlingly still whenever he is lost in thought, much to the worry of people nearby.'
... But what intrigues me is the ace switch between teams. What was Staraptor's slot in the gym is now replaced with Flamigo - a lovely representation for Staraptor in that penultimate slot, certainly, but the birds themselves are a world apart.
If we take a quick glance at Flamigo here...
Tumblr media
... We see that he is the entire opposite of Staraptor - he only flourishes in a group. And we see that in Larry, too - as lone wolf as he is, when does he truly come alive, hit his peak of battling strength? When he's surrounded by others - when the crowd gathers for his gym battle towards its conclusion, when Rika and Poppy watch on and support him in the Elite Four.
And so, pasting all this together, if the penultimate slot in the party is the heart of the trainer, what does that make the ace?
Potential; what the trainer could be... for better, or for worse.
If we take the examples I used before in the meta I linked above, of champions:
Cynthia's ace is the ultimate in trainer nightmare fuel, Garchomp. Without the goodness in her heart, without her academic curiosity for the ancient past being channelled into research... well, we know what happens. It's this fucker.
Tumblr media
Cynthia has the potential to be this guy, and I think we're all pretty fucking thankful that she isn't...
Wallace's ace is a Milotic. Said to be the 'most beautiful of all Pokemon', and able to calm violence simply by its presence, Wallace without a League structure would be a Contest master, which is something he also excels at: and he's got the perfect pal to do it with. He values physical beauty, exuberance, and charm, it'd be a simple switch.
Steven's ace is a Metagross. Destined as he is to take over the Devon Corporation when his father eventually retires, without his battle prowess and fascination for fossils, in another life he'd run the technology company with quick intellect and good business sense.
Even in the very League Larry is part of, this checks. Poppy's is Tinkaton - a little girl, vastly too powerful for her size, has the potential to be an utter nightmare of a child without having an outlet for her strength; Hassel's Baxcalibur is him without Brassius - partly the emotional distance of Ice, and part the heritage of Dragons. It's no coincidence that Bax's signature move Glaive Rush bounces double damage back to itself the turn after - a deeply appropriate sentiment for the man who feels too much.
... And so, where does that leave us with Larry?
It leaves us with a man wearing a facade - unsurprising, when he gives you the TM for it. It leaves us with a man whose genius and vibrance is swallowed by corporate life, who actually LOVES the thrill of being cheered on. It leaves us with a man wants to overcome his own weakness, a man who wishes to Fight AND to Fly... it leaves us with a man whose ace has Scrappy, which will allow him to strike Ghosts - something his 'normal' team can't do. It leaves us with a showman, and...
... it leaves us kinda sad, really. This man is the only character in the series who has managed to master two separate types, and it's for the worst of reasons, but... we do see those glimmers of brilliance, and we do see a Terastillised Flamigo - a Pokemon known for silly movements and power, much like his masterful trainer with the very silly throw, who is now pure Flying.
Pay attention, Larry dear. Maybe you too can soar. <3

Enjoying Billowy Cloud Cover
Our trip to East Texas and Epiphany Ranch didn’t disappoint! We took advantage of the wonderful, somewhat cooler temperatures. We went to see my sweet cousin, Mary Ellen Snow, who moved to Tyler, TX from Frisco, TX. We were neighbors in Frisco, buds in Tulsa and Dallas before that. It looks like the cousins still have some common ground again. How blessed she is to live close to her son and many…

The latest polling by YouGov shows extreme support for Larry Cat to win leadership bid. Polling shows him with a shocking 38-point lead on the second most popular candidate Rishi Sunak.
Other candidates are closely tied with only points between them however, it's clear Larry has not only popular support but is favoured by remaining Tory support within Parliament.

Vanya On 42nd Street (1994)
When watching a live performance, the boundary between reality and fiction occurs at the edge of the stage. What happens when the performance takes place in an abandoned theater during a makeshift rehearsal? You get Louis Malle’s swan song “Vanya On 42nd Street”, a competent version of Chekhov’s famous play “Uncle Vanya” as performed by actors in contemporary clothing and no scenery.
Tumblr media
The film opens with the cast of NY area stage actors walking the streets of Times Square on their way to what appears to be a workshop rehearsal. They are met by the play’s director Andre Gregory at the front of the then abandoned and dilapidated New Amsterdam Theater. What looks like a documentary in process suddenly withers away as the first lines of Chekhov’s words are uttered as if the two actors are reconnecting an old friendship. Before you know it, the play is being performed with little reference to the current outside world.
Tumblr media
This concept to film a classic play as a rehearsal was 5 years in the making through the sharp minds of Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn, the two stars of “My Dinner With Andre”.  What started as informal workshops inside the nearby Victory Theater would blossom into this unconventional vision. Bringing back director Louis Malle to make such a vision a reality was the perfect reunion at the right time. The three players hardly miss a beat in rehashing that imaginary line between reality and fiction that made “My Dinner With Andre” so unforgettable. But that line was not immediately installed at the film’s beginning.
Tumblr media
I was slightly put off by the film’s first half because I felt that the actors were warming up for the so-called big performance. The rehearsal did feel realistic with actors warming up and getting into character, but I knew I was watching a rehearsal. Then the second half came and then the drama became engaging. The scene with all the characters mapping out the dispersal of Vanya’s land felt real from the body language to the anguish of all involved. It was then that the imaginary line was truly formed and the drama became focused. It’s very possible that it was the intention of Shawn, Gregory and Malle to lead the viewer into this kind of plot evolution and while it wasn’t what I would have had in mind, nonetheless, it did its function very well.
Tumblr media
The age range of the actors involved spanned at least 50 years so you got a variety of experience and it showed in the individual performances. You had the younger cast members like Julianne Moore and Brooke Smith up against veterans like Shawn, Larry Pine, George Gaynes, Phoebe Brand and Lynn Cohen, you see the contrasting ways that they interpret their characters. For example, the dialogue between Smith and Pine, showed how a newcomer and a seasoned performer play off against one another. Smith appears as if she’s reading the words, but Pine immerses himself in them. Smith does come into her own as the drama intensifies. It would be amazing if Shawn and Gregory reunited years later to do a sequel to this film and recruit Brooke Smith to be one of the older characters and see how her acting has changed into a more wise and learned style.
Tumblr media
“Vanya On 42nd Street” was a hit in the indie-film world for the 1994 season including Spirit Award nominations for Brooke Smith and Larry Pine, a Chlotrudis Award win for Wallace Shawn’s leading performance and the Boston Film Critics Best Actress Prize Award for Julianne Moore. Unfortunately, the film’s unorthodox setting made it seem out of place for any Oscar consideration, but it still has a place in the great underrated list of films from the 1990s that should have been more widespread.
8/10

Shifting gears slightly, this is The Forest-Lords of Dihad (1982), the first of two products detailing the Land Beyond the Mountains, a setting developed by Gamelords for Metagaming’s Fantasy Trip system. Despite the promise of the material, the deal fell apart when Metagaming closed and Fantasy Trip slipped into copyright limbo. The pair of modules from Gamelords are, to my knowledge, the only third-party material produced for Fantasy Trip during its first incarnation.
I’ve never looked at any of Metagaming’s later adventures, and Tollenkar’s Lair is just a large dungeon, so I can’t really judge Dihad against the mainline content, but I am willing to bet this is pretty different. It’s very much a setting book, comparable with something like Griffin Mountain in terms of the size of the territory and the sort of details the book is interested in (social groups, topography, factions, as opposed to a more encounter-based focus like X1: The Isle of Dread, or even the overland details in Mines of Keridav). It’s…very good. It makes me seriously wonder what Thieves Guild might have developed into had Gamelords had the staying power of Chaosium and RuneQuest.
It is not at all what I expect for Fantasy Trip, which I think of as more of a tactical combat game. In fact, there is very little sense of system in the text. TFT stuff is there, but it isn’t in the foreground, making this material essentially generic.
Pretty sure that is a Wyman cover, but not one of their best. Wyman, Larry Shade and and Wallace Miller are all credited as interior illustrators, and they do a very good job. Really love that gargoyle. Which, gargoyle hunting is a big thing here — their gallbladders are important components for all sorts of arcane doings, and someone one has been overhunting and stockpiling them, causing a general shortage. This whole plot thread is delightfully odd and worth the price of admission alone (which was about 25 bucks, at least until I posted about it). I wish I had the second volume!
