W A T C H I N G
It's the lowest grossing of the new David Gordon Green trilogy. I thought it was the best film since 2018.
I like that they put some more slower psychological mystery into it leading up to the inevitable slasher stuff.

Halloween Ends (2022)
Tumblr media
Halloween Ends brings some interesting, innovative ideas to the long-running franchise. If only it fully committed to them. At least we can credit writers Paul Brad Logan, Chris Bernier, Danny McBride and David Gordon Green (who also directs) for committing to the title; this is definitely the last chapter in this sequel trilogy.
In 2019, 21-year-old Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell) is babysitting when a prank goes fatally wrong. Three years later, the whole town of Haddonfield, Illinois harbors a grudge against him. Everyone, except Allyson Nelson (Andi Matichak) - Laurie Strode’s granddaughter. Since Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) vanished four years ago, Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) has been rebuilding her life but she senses a familiar evil within Corey.
I’m not sure whether to criticize this film for putting most of its focus on Corey and Allyson. This chapter seeks to create a Stephen King’s It vibe around Haddonfield. The idea is that Michael Myers’ rampages have corrupted the town. Even if he's gone, the evil remains. In the background we see billboards for missing women, Laurie is harassed by people who should sympathize with her, the local radio DJ Willy the Kid (Keraun Harris) is exploiting the tragedies his listeners have lived through and overall, there's this nastiness in the air. That's something new. The first downside is that it makes Halloween Ends feel like it belongs to a completely different franchise. At 111 minutes, you could probably edit out Myers entirely and still get a full movie. Second - and most crucially - is that in the end, director David Gordon Green doesn’t seem to be fully interested in Corey’s story. He eventually gets pushed aside so Michael can come back and have his final showdown with Laurie.
As a final chapter in the franchise, Halloween Ends ultimately disappoints. I’m not sure what I wanted to see. I prefer to believe there is something supernatural (but not Halloween III kind of supernatural) happening in these movies so I guess I wanted the film to acknowledge this without being too obvious about it. I thought it was going to when we hear Laurie say “Evil doesn’t go away, it changes shape.” With Corey taking on the mask and the spirit of Myers possessing him or something. Maybe even that would’ve disappointed because ultimately, it’s much scarier for the story NOT to end, for us to be left forever wondering if Michael is still out there, waiting for us to let our guard down.
I don’t want to seem too negative about the film. As a slasher movie, it gets a lot of things right. The opening scene is fantastic. Several kills will make you flinch. One that involves a blowtorch still makes my skin crawl. Whether we get enough of the characters we came to see or not, Halloween Ends is 2/3 of a great horror movie with interesting ideas and concepts that are either new or have never been adequately explored in this series. Unfortunately, the not-so-great final third is what we see before the credits roll.
In terms of gore and violence, Halloween Ends has enough shocking visuals to satisfy gore-hounds but they’re also the ones who will be most disappointed by the decision to go in a brand new direction. It’s an interesting experiment that doesn’t quite pay off. There's also a pretty cool thing after the credits, though if you skip it, you wouldn’t be missing out on too much, since it’s not really a scene. (October 31, 2022)

Review: Halloween Ends (2022)
Tumblr media
I have been a fan of the Halloween movies for as long as I can remember. Even after how bad Halloween Kill was, I was still pretty excited for this movie. After all, it was the final movie, surely they were going to have some kind of amazing fight, tons of kills, and a lot of screentime for Michael....at least that's what I thought going into this movie.
As you can't assume I was completely wrong. This movie had pretty much none of that. Halloween Kills had pretty no screen time for Laurie so this movie decided to do the same thing, but now to Michael, you know, the character this movie is about. Instead, we focus mainly on a character named Corey Cunningham. He's hated by the town because he accidentally killed a kid.
I guess I should mention this movie takes place 4 years after the last one and Michael had gone into hiding. Anyway, Corey just so happens to be the one that found him, completely by accident of course. Does Michael kill him? Almost, but he looks into his eyes and I guess sees that he's killed someone so he lets him live. The movie never really explains why Michael lets Corey live and it apparently doesn't really care.
The point is, Corey is then built up to be the next Haddonfield killer. He even works alongside Michael to kill two people. The only two people Michael kills in the entire movie I should add. Eventually, Corey decides he needs Michael's mask so he literally just goes and takes it. This new character just walks up to Michael, basically just pushes him over and takes the mask. That simple.
Michael Myers has been built up as this unkillable, unstoppable monster for two movies, three if you count the 1978 movie, and he's made into a literal pushover in this one. Either way, Corey then decides to dress like Michael and go killing people eventually making his way to Laurie where he then kills himself. No fight scene, no nothing. Just gets shot in the shoulder and then decides to stab himself in the throat.
Corey was introduced as if he was important to the story, as if they were going to do something with him, and then didn't. He was literally nobody. He wasn't related to anyone, he wasn't connected to anything. They just tried to make a new Michael, but then killed him making the entire story with him pointless. I genuinely have no idea why he was in the movie when it should have all been Michael.
Tumblr media
As a stand-alone movie I think it works, I genuinely do think the story with Corey is pretty good. I do think that the story about a person accidentally killing someone and slowly turning into a killer just because of the constant hate they get was good. But because this is a Halloween movie, and the finale of a trilogy it just doesn't work. This isn't meant to be a movie about Corey, it's meant to be a movie about Michael and we really didn't get to see much of him until about 15-20 minutes until the end of the movie.

Halloween Ends Review
First thing first, the elephant in the room must be addressed. Whatever you’ve taken away from the trailers and previews, that is not what this movie is. Is this the final showdown for Laurie Strode and Michael Myers (at least this version)? Yes it is. But there is a lot to the movie that was not really shown within any of the materials leading up to the movie. So while there won’t be anything…

'Halloween Ends' - Expect The Unexpected
‘Halloween Ends’ – Expect The Unexpected
I got to listen to the film score for “Halloween Ends” in its entirety before I sat down to watch the concluding chapter of this particular Michael Myers trilogy. Composed and performed by John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies, it reminds me of what Carpenter himself said about this installment: it is meant to be “more intimate” than its predecessors, and the music helps to illustrate…

The Gemstone Family Tree
Danny McBride said that he had six generations of the Gemstone family mapped out for upcoming seasons of The Righteous Gemstones. You can find them on the fan wiki entry for Roy Gemstone, Eli's dad. I doubt that many from the early generations will appear on the show, unless there's a big scandal that goes back 100 years.
Generation 1:
Roy's grandparents: Richie Gemstone/Nancy Donalds, Henry Holmes/Joy Cameron
Generation 2:
Roy's parents:  Larry Gemstone/Ruth Holmes, plus uncles Mike Gemstone and Dylan Holmes
His wife Kyra's parents: Harry Martins/Gracie Roses.
We also see who I assume are Aimee-Leigh and Peter Montgomery's parents: Kyle Freeman/Mary Marias and Richie Montgomery/Cate Richards.
Generation 3:
Roy Gemstone/Kyra Martins, plus Kyra's brother Rob Martin and Roy's siblings, Linda and Larry.  According to the IMDB, Roy's wife is named Ruth
Kyra's brothers-in-law: Jeff Freeman, Henry Dylans.
Generation 4, born 1950-60:
Eli Gemstone/Aimee-Leigh Freeman, May-May Gemstone/Peter Montgomery
Generation 5, born 1980-90:
Jesse/Amber, Judy/BJ, Kelvin/Keefe, Chuck and Karl Montgomery. Keefe is listed as Roy's grandson-in-law
Generation 6, born 2000-2010: Gideon, Pontius, and Abraham
Roy was born in 1917, so his parents would be born around 1880-1890, and his grandparents 1850-1860.

Back when I was a Librarian, we lived and breathed by the Publisher's Weekly Bestseller List. It was my responsibility to print or photocopy the list every week and update our bestseller's display. (Also to purchase extra copies of particularly popular bestsellers.)
I haven't looked at the list in YEARS. Some of these surprise me:
A new translation of The Iliad made the list?!
Ken Follett is still alive?? (I looked him up, he's only 74.)
Danielle Steel is still alive?? ( I just looked her up, she's only 76 and has been married five(!) times. To be fair, I also looked up Ken Follett, he's only been married twice.)
I see some Christmas-themed books on the list!
I see a Disney manga! (“The Battle for Pumpkin King”)

Screenplay by  Paul Brad Logan & Chris Bernier & Danny McBride & David Gordon Green.
Directed by David Gordon Green.
Distributed by Universal Pictures. 111 minutes. Rated R.
The title of this film is Halloween Ends and the filmmakers are promising that this will finish the decades-long saga of Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. But will it end? Really?
After all, there have been 13 Halloween movies in the past 44 years, when frankly only the first one was very good. The series has been rebooted twice. The first series had eight movies, the first reboot series had two more and now this second rebooting is on movie number three – which they promise will be the last.
Is it really likely that it won’t be rebooted and reinvented yet again in about five to ten years? Or even continue this variation of the saga?
I will say, Halloween Ends actually does finish off the story of Michael Myers pretty definitively. However, as one of the other people I saw in the preview screening for the film pointed out, there may very well be a rather subtle opening for yet another sequel towards the end of this film – although let’s face it, not much about this movie is subtle.
I won’t tell you exactly what it is for fear of spoilers, let’s just say that one of the many dead bodies that pile up during the running time of Halloween Ends seems to have disappeared during mayhem of the climax. Then again, maybe it was a simple continuity error on the filmmakers’ part, or even the audience thinking it sees (or doesn’t see) something that is not really there.
Actually, for the first hour or so, Halloween Ends is refreshingly different from most of the Halloween movies. It’s more about the town of Haddonfield than of the masked serial killer which has terrified it for so long. In fact Michael Myers does not appear in this film until a good 30-45 minutes into the film, and on this first appearance the audience is not sure if it is really him or a dream sequence.
In fact, in this film Michael Myers is very much different than the other incarnations. Yes, when dragged out into public he still does kill people, but he is slower and timider and has spent most of the last few years hiding in the sewers of town. Hell, he even gets bullied by a 20-something nerd.
This change may even make a certain amount of sense – the guy is in his late sixties by now, you’d expect him to slow down – and yet it flies in the face of everything we’ve seen of the character in every one of the previous films, even the one which was released just last year. Michael Myers was an unstoppable, superhuman bogeyman, and now he’s a very human and probably finally ultimately a rather stoppable force.
However, Myers isn’t the focus of Halloween Ends, or even the main bad guy. Which is part of the reason the film, while far from great, is better than the just-awful second chapter of this trilogy, Halloween Kills.
The new bad guy – sort of Michael Myers the next generation – is Corey (Rohan Campbell), a local young guy who inadvertently killed a little boy he was babysitting, leading the town to vilify and bully him as a murderer. (The town of Haddonfield seems to be pretty judgmental, also blaming victim Laurie for sparking Michael Myers’ killing spree.) Corey is a quiet loser until he has an accidental run in with Michael, which seems to inspire Corey to indulge his bloodlust.
And, just by coincidence, Corey has just started dating Laurie’s granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak). Oops.
Sadly, little makes sense about the relationship between Corey and Allyson – both early on when he is a geeky outcast and later when he goes all psycho killer. She seems to fall for him way too quickly, and later as his actions turn alarming, she seems to go all in for the dude. This seems kind of weird because her parents were killed by Michael Myers, and her grandmother has been having a blood feud with him for 44 years.
Grandma Laurie on the other hand, seems to have finally gotten her life in order. Curtis does a fine job yet again of returning to this character that she has been playing on and off for much of her life.  She is no longer in constant survivalist mode. She seems to have learned how to deal with her past for the most part – even though her daughter was murdered just a few years earlier. Laurie has gotten a makeover and a new cute house which she is sharing with her granddaughter. She’s even toying with a shy relationship with long-time friend and fellow survivor Deputy Frank Hawkins (Will Patton). She is also working on a book to help bury her demons – particularly the one who has been missing for four years.
However, when she recognizes some of Michael in Corey, she has to go back to fight or flight mode.
Honestly, the first half of the movie is by far the most interesting part. Even though in general I didn’t buy into the character of Corey, it shows that he is brought to his horrific place by what may be the true villain of the film – the town itself, which has become toxic through its diseased relationship with its own bogeyman.
And that original bogeyman – call him Michael or “the shape” or whatever, basically only plays a rather small supporting role in his own denouement.
Is this the end of the Halloween saga? I’d be shocked if it is. But probably it should be.
