Ooh could I get a Jerott/Danny playlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You most surely can, Kay!! I loved this so much I never wanted to finish it.
A twinge of approval
A playlist for realising you've fallen in love with your idiot best friend and bandmate
George Michael - Faith Tim Curry - Sweet Transvestite Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street Talking Heads - I'm Not in Love Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark Barbra Streisand - The Way He Makes Me Feel Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band - Saposhkelekh The Kinks - Lola Leonard Cohen - Lover Lover Lover Sapho - Globo Night R.E.M. - Crush With Eyeliner Kishore Kumar - Chhu Kar Mere Manko Marcel Dadi - La Madrugada Klezmatics - Di Zun Vet Aruntergeyn David Bowie - Changes Queen - You're My Best Friend Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the Middle With You
No, really, I think I enjoyed this most of all because of the way it came together. Surprisingly good!!! Just like the ship. Wholesome. I made this playlist as tender as I could and it genuinely fucks me up, so I hope you like it too!
FCs: random sax and keytar players from image search and Carl Barat, plus Viveik Kalra and Hanne Gaby Odiele (yes I pretty much use a different FC for Danny each time because while I have a clear idea of NB Danny in my head, it’s not based on any one person. But Hanne Gaby is intersex like Danny, so yay for that).
1) Jerott. I find it strange to think I grew up in a time when people apparently didn’t know George Michael was gay, but do have memories of the whole sordid uncomfortable circus around him being outed. Jerott wouldn’t realise George Michael was gay, even while emulating the Faith style - leathers, blue jeans, white t-shirt, aviators, acoustic guitar. And the song is a perfect fit for Jerott at the end of Checkmate, needing a little space to himself.
Well, I guess it would be nice if I could touch your body I know not everybody has got a body like you But I gotta think twice before I give my heart away And I know all the games you play because I played them too Oh, but I need some time off from that emotion Time to pick my heart up off the floor
2) Danny isn’t a transexual or a transvestite, but I believe the composer Richard O’Brian is non-binary, and Danny is most certainly a fan of RHPS. Danny has a big show-tunes voice that surprises everyone because usually they’re just rocking out with their sax.
3) THIS. THIS IS THE PERFECT SHIP SONG FOR THEM. Iconic sax!! Iconic guitar solo!! Scottish mega-hit!! And then there’s the wistfulness of the lyrics, Danny probably figuring Jerott’s never going to be interested...
Way down the street there's a light in his place He opens the door he's got that look on his face And he asks you where you've been You tell him who you've seen and you talk about anything He's got this dream about buyin' some land He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands And then he'll settle down, in some quiet little town And forget about everything
4) I’m trying to weave through consistent influences for all the characters too, to give an idea of what brings them together as well as what their unique tastes are. Talking Heads are beloved by all at St Mary’s, and Danny is very good at claiming not to be in love.
5) Jerott again, it’s that...double-denims/blue jeans and white vest man’s man(?) vibe with the side of snogging your bandmate on stage.
Stay on the streets of this town And they'll be carving you up all right They say, "You gotta stay hungry" Hey, baby, I'm just about starving tonight I'm dying for some action I'm sick of sitting around here trying to write this book I need a love reaction Come on now, baby, give me just one look
6) A big Jewish show tune for Danny! And it’s from Yentl. So all the feelings about gender and faith and being torn between thinking you’re better off alone or going with the one you love.
I feel as if I'm falling Every time I close my eyes And flowing through my body Is a river of surprise Feelings are awakening I hardly recognize as mine
7) As far as I gather, beyond even a ‘revival’ of something, the ‘80s saw the first proper emergence of klezmer as the genre we’d recognise now. Danny is very into this. And Saposhkele is perfect for Danny giving into their feelings and realising they’re in it for good.
[I sell my boots and go with you on a coach just to be with you as you are a handleless door without me my sweet little bird I will sell handkerchieves at the railroad station just to be with you as you are a handleless door without me]
8) Danny’s still not trans, but this is a period-appropriate song for a period-appropriate playlist :))) And Jerott would get very into playing it and singing it for Danny, once he realised he was more than fine with being in love with Danny because Danny’s amazing.
I pushed her away I walked to the door I fell to the floor I got down on my knees Well, I looked at her, and she at me
Well, that's the way that I want it to stay And I always want it to be that way for my Lola Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola Girls will be boys and boys will be girls It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world Except for Lola Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
9) This was always on my Jerott playlists anyway for the lyrics and the struggle between god/faith/physicality/love, but add in the fact that it’s an incredibly Jewish take on those things and it’s perfect for this playlist.
He said, "I locked you in this body I meant it as a kind of trial You can use it for a weapon Or to make some woman smile."
10) Mainly I just think this is a bop, and I think Jerott and Danny would bond in dark Parisian discos to music by a French-Moroccan Jew (band AU Jerott’s mum is French-Algerian)
11) Another one to tie playlists together - St Mary’s as a whole are fans of R.E.M. Nonsensical Michael Stipe lyrics, but themes of self-invention and unusual/individual fashions
I am smitten I'm the real thing (I'm the real thing) We all invent ourselves And you know me
12) I chose this song because I’d already had Kishore Kumar on Jerott playlists, and this one is thematically about feeling a change when touched by another person’s mind, wanting to incorporate them into music and song.
13) More French-Jewish music for bonding over, but Jerott can serenade Danny on guitar with this one.
14) Featuring the golden peacock, a recurring image in Yiddish folk music, ‘The peacock here is a mediator, helping the singer to find what s/he is yearning for and, possibly, possessing a messianic, redemptive ability to cross over the boundaries of impossible distance.’ [source] I like the idea of this relationship as something kind of redemptive for both of them, and it’s also a union of influences that are incredibly disparate but still converge on a Glasgow childhood in the ‘60s (not that they knew each other as kids).
[The sun will be setting behind the mountain, In silence approaching then love will come softly; In silence approaching then love will come softly To sorrow, that sits on a golden stone And weeps for itself all alone.]
15) Oh you know. Facing up to the fact they’re idiots in love and it’s a good thing.
I watch the ripples change their size But never leave the stream of warm impermanence and So the days float through my eyes But still the days seem the same And these children that you spit on As they try to change their worlds Are immune to your consultations They're quite aware of what they're going through
16) Would it be a Jerott playlist without some Queen? And they’re best friends, doncha know? :’)
17) Gerry Rafferty’s band, just a fun little bop to finish things off with.

favourite solo artists: omg, so many to name. off the top of my head: Hozier, David Bowie, Childish Gambino, H.E.R., Harry Styles, Nat King Cole, Nina Simone, among - well - some of the non-desi artists. among desi artists, i love just about anything from A. R. Rahman, R. D. Burman, S. D. Burman, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, and Bombay Jayashri, and anything sang by Geeta Dutt, Farida Khanum, Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rekha Bhardwaj - to name a few. :’3

dream trip: oh man, i want to tour around in my own country because there’s so much left to see! and then maybe a tour around all the cultural and historical hotspots in Europe.
last book i read: well, i reread A Slight Trick of the Mind by Mitch Cullin because i was In A Mood.
favourite food: my most favourite thing to eat is buttered popcorn. i can have a shameful amount of it and still have space for more. other than that, i’d take a simple, rice + tomato saru meal anyday.

Tribute to Saraswati Devi, the first woman music director in Hindi films, on her 40th death anniversary. Born in a Parsi family in 1912, Saraswati Devi was a trained classical singer and rose to become India’s first woman music director of Bollywood. A musical rage in the 30s and early 40s, Saraswati Devi's musical career was mostly confined to films produced by Bombay Talkies. Starting with 'Jawani Ki Hawa' in 1935, she went on to compose highly popular music for hit films like Achhut Kanya, Kangan, Bandhan and jhoola. She was born as Khursheed Manchersher Minocher – Homji. She changed her name to escape the wrath of the conservative elements of her community as they could never stand that a lady from their clan would enter the film world. Once when at a gathering the Bombay Talkies owner Himanshu Rai heard her, he instantly invited her to join his concern as a music director. She was reluctant at first, not knowing how she would adjust herself to the needs of the film industry. But finally she accepted the offer. She was the first woman music director no doubt. But the biggest challenge she faced was to groom non-singers into singers. That was a very, very big challenge in view of the competition from New Theatres as she didn’t have a Saigal or a Kanan to sing her compositions. That is why one should say that she had a formidable task to perform unlike her counterparts like R.C.Boral, Tamir Baran and others in Calcutta. The biggest contribution by Saraswati Devi, therefore, was to produce hit songs through the lips of non-singers like Ashok Kumar, Devika Rani and Leela Chitnis.. Right from Achchut Kanya till Jhoola, Saraswati Devi went on rampage, so to speak, producing one hit after another. Leela Chitnis could sing hit songs like, ‘Meera ke jeevan ki sooni parri re sitar’ (Kangan), ‘Man bhavan lo sawan aya re’(Bandhan) and ‘Jhoole ke sang jhoolo jhoolo mere man’.(Jhoola) Imagine Saraswati Devi producing a golden jubilee hit in the voices of Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani in film ‘Achhut Kanya’ (a film that Nehru saw and appreciated)-‘Main ban ki chirriya ban ke ban ban bolun re’. The biggest hit by her was the marching song of Bandhan, ‘Chal chal re nau jawan’ sung in solo by Ashok Kumar, sung in chorus by Ashok Kumar and sung as a duet by him with Leela Chitnis. She used a non-singer like Sneh Prabha to sing the Puner Milan song, ‘Nacho nacho pyare man ke mor’. The male singer she had was Arun Kumar, who sung for Kishore Sahu in Punermilan, for Mumtaz Ali in ‘Jhoola’ (Main to Dilli se dulhan laya re he babuji) and others. Incidentally, it was she who gave break to Kavi Pradeep as a singer though he was writing lyrics for the concern since 1939 from film ‘Kangan’. She first used him in that immortal song of ‘Bandhan’ which is played in the back ground: ‘Piyu piyu bol praan papeehe piyu piyu bol’ Pradeep did sing subsequently some big hits after leaving Bombay Talkies. But in ‘Jhoola’ he has left behind a memorable song too tuned by Saraswati Devi: ‘Mere bichade hue saathi teri yaad sataye, baar baar teri chavi aye birha agan jaraae’ After she left Bombay Talkies, she shot into limelight again in the early fifties when she tuned two non-film ghazals for Habib Wali Mohammad. These were: ‘Lagta nahin hai dil mera ujjarre dayar mein’ and ‘Yeh na thi hamari kismet ke visaal-e-yaar hota’. When you listen to her compositions, specially the indigenously-flavored background music, you are transported into the environment of the India of the early 20th century. During the later years of her life, the bad and selfish film world turned apathetic towards the doyenne. Not even a single person visited her when she fractured her hip bone after falling from a private bus. The legendary singer and India’s first female music director left for a better world in 1980 with no one to mourn her death. Even the media did not find her worthy of an obituary.

40 Years of Qurbani (20/06/1980)
Qurbani is an action film. It was produced and directed by #FerozKhan. The film stars Feroz Khan himself, #VinodKhanna, #ZeenatAman, #AmjadKhan, #ShaktiKapoor, #ArunaIrani, #AmrishPuri and #KadarKhan.
It is an adaptation of the 1972 Italian film The Master Touch.Qurbani was famous for the Bollywood disco song “Aap Jaisa Koi”, sung by Pakistani pop star #NaziaHassan and produced by #Biddu. The movie is known for its music and songs, including the title qawwali Qurbani Qurbani, written by the Urdu poet, Faruk Kaiser and rendered by Anwar, Kishore Kumar, and Aziz Nazan. It has a song performed by Mohammed Rafi, Kya Dekhte Ho, which was written by Indeevar. Qurbani Qurbani received a special award for ‘The Most Amazing Evergreen Song’ by Bollywood music producer, Kalyanji–Anandji.
Feroz Khan met Biddu and Nazia Hassan at a party hosted by a close friend in England. Nazia’s parents insisted Feroz listen to Nazia sing. Feroz did and was highly impressed. But Feroz had his eye on International star Biddu to score a song for Qurbani. Biddu was reluctant to score music for an Indian film. It was with sincere persistence and Feroz telling Biddu to do it for his mom who lived in India. Feroz also played the Bangalore card with Biddu since both Feroz and Biddu both hailed from Bangalore. Many music directors (including the film’s original music directors Kalyanji–Anandji) opposed Feroz Khan hiring Biddu to score a solo song in the film. Many tried to stop this because they viewed Biddu as an outsider. After several discussions, Feroz Khan stuck to his choice.

A Chennai Winter
The early 2000s. The mobile phone was not that indispensable. Yet, he carried one that he could fit in his normal-sized palm. He waited for her outside her workplace, having already requested the security guard to inform her that he was there. He used this time to try and nail down something that was bugging him. He liked her. Having met through family friends and with most exchanges through instant messenger and emails, they had a little awkwardness about them every time they met in person. It was that awkwardness that was bothering him. He wanted her to be comfortable around him, shut him up when his jokes didn't land, or even better, counter him with some of her own. They were not there yet. There was a little bit of forced formality accompanying them at every stage. How do I make her comfortable? he worried. He came out of his reverie as he saw her walk towards him. She looked lovely. He liked her very much. He was conscious of the indulgent grin the security guard was giving them. He smiled at him first and then gave her his full attention.
'Any plans, today?' he asked her. 'Just going home or engayaavadhu velila...'
This was another issue he had cultivated unintentionally. They stuck to English most of the time. Two sentences in English and then either a phrase or word in Thamizh somehow became the format for their conversations. He couldn't get rid of this custom that he was sure he didn't apply with anyone else. Somehow, he had sucked her into this mode as well.
'Nothing much. The usual shopping and maybe velila dinner.'
Much like Chennai's pedestrians, they moved with a start-stop approach, extremely watchful of the surroundings and avoiding pitfalls of all kinds. He didn't drive in the city, and neither did she. They would typically hop on an autorickshaw and go to either a coffee joint and then drop her off at her place. She was telling him something about her work. With the hustle and bustle, conscious of how close they were and holding her hand gingerly and releasing it immediately, and the zillion thoughts in his head, he couldn't catch all of what she was saying. On top of it, he was also trying to flag down an auto. They had covered a lot of ground. He had failed on the auto front. 'Do you want to stop for coffee? There is a 'Coffee Day' right under the overpass if I am not mistaken.' 'Yeah... I was just asking you that.' she laughed. 'Sorry, missed that. All this saththam...' Seriously, who talks with such bilingual proficiency? As he had no idea what she had been talking about this whole time, he felt he had to open up a new topic. Given that she grew up in Bombay, he wanted to impress upon her that he knew a few Hindi songs. 'So, tell me this... Kishore Kumar or Rafi?' he blurted out. 'Oh, wow, does it have to be an either-or?' she asked. 'Well, it doesn't, really...' and he didn't have a follow-up. 'Actually, I think I will go with a song rather than the singer,' she said, trying to help him out. 'Do you have a preference?' 'You are right. They have both held their own. Nalla range of songs.', he said, with a mental apology to Kishore Kumar. 'So which song is your earworm these days?', she wanted to know. He couldn't think of a single Kishore Kumar song. The kind of brain freeze that was several degrees below freezing point led his mind as far away from Kishore Kumar as possible. He was also eager to share that he had an eclectic taste when it comes to music. All combined thoughts came out as 'Kiss from a rose.' She slowed down in her walk just a bit. Oh god, I didn't slip in words like kiss, trust me, he wanted to say. He felt that giving any such explanation would only make it even more cumbersome. So he let it hang there. Seal probably didn't have him in mind while singing the lines, 'There is so much a man can tell you, so much he can say.' But he kept these thoughts to himself. 'That is not a Kishore Kumar song, illa..?', she said. 'Haha... no. I listen to all kinds. This is Seal, I think. I saw the movie which had this song on the soundtrack, and I've been humming it. Nalla smooth song...' he continued while thinking, 'Dei brain, stick to a topic and stick to one language. What the hell...' They made it to the coffee shop. In general, Chennai and 'Coffee Day' in particular seemed to be embracing two traditions at once. This being December, there was a Christmas star at the entrance, right above a bright Rangoli for maargazhi. 'Chalo, we made it to coffee,' she said triumphantly. 'Chalo Chalo,' he added while cursing in his mind for now having to deal with a third language. They ordered their coffees, and he offered to pay. 'You don't have to do this every time, you know?' she said relatively lightly, but he wasn't sure what she was referring to. Was it the paying the bills or the agreeing to everything part. He was happy to do both. As they sat down to enjoy the coffee, he asked her what song she was into these days. 'Vellai PookkaL' she said before he could even finish his question. 'Oh yes, Rahman, right?' 'Yes, from Kannaththil Muththamittaal,' she added. Did she give the slightest wink, or was it his imagination? Nice segue from 'Kiss from a rose' to 'Kannaththil Muththamittal' (Kiss on the cheek) if she had planned it that way. He relaxed a bit and decided to get it clarified. But, she spoke first with an 'it's a light piece that you can easily hum along to,' and he found himself agreeing to it rather than getting the risky clarification out in the open. Yeah... he said. The silence set in, and it was deafening. He couldn't help thinking that he was blowing it. He was having more conversations with himself than with her. She was rummaging her handbag, and he was sure she was doing it to avoid conversation. 'Can you call my phone? I might have left it back in the office.' she said. 'Thank god, she is genuinely looking for something,' he thought with relief. He picked up his phone and called her - hoping she didn't notice that he had her on speed dial. Her phone rang from somewhere inside her bag. She smiled at him and continued to sort things out in her purse to find the phone. He, however, went all quiet. It was her ringtone. Despite the low-tech format, the ringtone was quite distinct. The Mouna Raagam theme. She looked up, phone in hand and a smile that hit him with force. She noticed his expression and said, 'What...?'. 'Unnoda ringtone...' he said. It was still playing. 'Oh, sorry,' she said. 'I let it ring without interruption. It is such a lovely piece. I often miss calls just to hear the ringtone play in its entirety.' There was an absolute clarity forming in his head. She continued with 'what a lovely piece. This is from an old movie. I like it as much for the heroine's character, Divya in Mouna Raagam, as anything else music-wise. I think the music captures her so well with this piece. Have you heard it before?' 'Tell me more,' he said and proceeded to hear from her everything he already liked about the movie, about Divya, and about the music. He then shared how he likes how IR uses different instruments for the same tune, depending on the situation. It can be uplifting when it is the guitar strings. It can be pathos when it is violin-heavy and even more so if it is a solo violin. It is Divya's theme, and her narrative rolled into one. At some point, he realized that he was sticking to Thamizh and was having an actual conversation with her. Somewhere between the coffee shop and her place, which they covered by walking all the way, they talked about a million things and even fought over half of them. While saying goodbye to him that evening, she confided, 'I like Kishore Kumar more. I thought you should know.' He loved her.
On cold winter mornings, he will catch her gazing outside their window, sipping steaming coffee. Like him, she will have this far-off smile, and more often than not, they will go for a walk around the block hand-in-hand.
"God gave us memories so that we can have roses in December."
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni from Jaal (the solo Hemant Kumar version, although the duet is lovely too) and O Mere Dil Ke Chain from Mere Jeevan Saathi. Two old faves with hauntingly beautiful lyrics and melodies. I'm choosing them for you cos they embody that sense of deep yearning and intense feelz fuckboys and manchildren express when they're finally laid low by love--basically, our TV Achilles' Heel.
