TOUR DE LUCY!
Lucy & Cycling
Tumblr media
Pedal Power!  When not motorized or on foot power, Lucy biked!  Here’s a look at bikes, trikes, and other likes.
Tumblr media
Ben Mankiewicz’s podcast relates that Lucille Ball, as a young Hollywood hopeful, biked to work.
Tumblr media
Broadway Thru a Keyhole (1933) ~  A bevy of costumed chorines - including an uncredited Lucille Ball, Susan Fleming and Ann Sothern - wheel around a giant nightclub stage to the tune of “When You Were a Girl on a Scooter (And I Was the Boy on the Bike)”. This was Lucille Ball’s second film. It also featured Charles Lane and Walter Winchell.
Tumblr media
Palm Springs Weekend (1942) ~ An RKO short in which newlyweds Lucy and Desi rent a tandem bike to tour Palm Canyon, stopping to take snapshots.
Tumblr media
“The Lost Pilot” (1951) ~ Pepito the Clown (Pepito Perez) was a good friend of Desi Arnaz. In the long-unaired pilot episode for “I Love Lucy” Pepito rides the world’s smallest bicycle, a routine that was part of his stage act.
Tumblr media
“The Audition” (1951) ~ When the unaired pilot’s script was recycled into the regular series, Pepito was replaced by Buffo the Clown (Pat Moran) who injures himself trying to do a handstand on the handlebars of a (full-sized) bicycle. Resting at the Ricardo’s apartment, he tries the stunt again and careens through the kitchen door. His replacement is Lucy as ‘The Professor’, although she doesn’t ride the bike!
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Show-Biz Swan Song” (1952) ~ When the episode was running short, Desi Arnaz invited Pepito to do some of his act from the unaired pilot, including the world’s smallest bicycle routine.
Tumblr media
The tiny bike (one of two) is six inches wide by ten inches high, manufactured by Anderson, Melbourne, Australia, in 1928. It was at one time entered into Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Pepito was in Australia in 1928 for an extended vaudeville tour, and he must have ordered this bicycle at that time. It is now one of the artifacts in the Lucy-Desi Museum’s collection. A special case was been constructed to exhibit it.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Fakes Illness” (1953) ~ To convince Ricky she is going through her second childhood, Lucy rides a tricycle through the living room!
Tumblr media
“The Ricardo’s Change Apartments” (1953) ~ Lucy fills the apartment to the brim with toys and baby items to convince Ricky they need a bigger apartment. Among the explosion of tot props is a tricycle and a bicycle!
Tumblr media
“Bon Voyage” (1956) ~ A bicycle is Lucy’s undoing when boarding the S.S. Constitution for Europe. Saying one last farewell to Little Ricky on the dock, her skirt gets caught in the chain of a messenger bike, delaying her timely boarding. She even tries to board with the bicycle!
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Bicycle Trip” (1956) ~ When leaving Italy for France, Lucy has her heart set on biking across the border, but meets some resistance from Ricky and the Mertzes.
LUCY: “You wouldn’t climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower. You wouldn’t ride the ski lift in Switzerland. You won’t swim in the Mediterranean and now you don’t want to bicycle along the Italian Riviera.”
Tumblr media
The bicycles used in the episode were provided by Arnold Schwinn and Company in return for a screen credit.
Tumblr media
“The I Love Lucy Christmas Show” (1956) ~ Little Ricky gets a new bike for Christmas!
Tumblr media
“Lucy is a Kangaroo for a Day” (1962) ~ To buy her son a new bicycle for his birthday, Lucy takes a job at a law office - until things ‘unravel’.  Her knit dress becomes entangled in the spokes of the bicycle and unravels, causing her to have to wear a kangaroo costume to complete the job.
Tumblr media
A carefree Jerry (Jimmy Garrett) rides his new bicycle through the living room!
Tumblr media
A receipt from a Hollywood bicycle shop for the purchase of a bicycle basket and bike rack. Dated December 22, 1962, it was signed by Lucy. It is not known if the items turned up on screen or in what show / episode.
Tumblr media
“Together for Christmas” (1962) ~ Combining their family holiday traditions, Lucy holds her favorite ornament, a Santa on a three-wheeled bike. Viv’s expression betrays her feelings about the ornament.
Tumblr media
“Bob Hope’s Leading Ladies” (1966) ~ In the special, Lucy makes her grand entrance riding a large tricycle with her chauffeur (Jerry Colonna) on the back.
Tumblr media
“Lucy in London” (1966) ~ Lucy and singer / songwriter Anthony Newley tour London town on a tandem bicycle.
Tumblr media
Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) ~ In the film, Helen (Lucille Ball) and Frank (Henry Fonda) are the parents of 19 kids!  On Christmas morning, more than a couple of them get bicycles.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Helps Craig Get a Drivers License” (1969) ~ Lucy tags along on Craig’s road test. Needless to say the back seat driver frustrates and angers the instructor (Jack Gilford). When he learns that her license has expired, he says that after he's through with her she'll be lucky to drive a tricycle in Griffith Park!
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Wally Cox” (1970) ~ Wally and Lucy are security guards at a toy warehouse that is robbed at gunpoint. There is a tricycle on the shelf behind the robbers (Gil Perkins and X Brands).
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Lawrence Welk” (1970) ~ Lucy sends her visiting friend Viv on the  Universal Studios tour, where she is excited to have seen Doris Day’s bicycle!  All this is reported by Viv and neither Day nor her bicycle appear on screen. In real life, Doris Day was an avid bike rider. She rode to the studio on many occasions and pedaled around Beverly Hills until the police finally told her they couldn’t guarantee her safety.
Tumblr media
Mame (1974) ~ Auntie Mame (Lucy) and her nephew Patrick (Kirby Furlong) bike through central park in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical.
EXERCISE BIKES
Tumblr media
“The Charm School” (1954) ~ At Phoebe Emerson’s salon, Lucy and Ethel work out on stationary bikes. If you don’t remember this moment, it is because it was cut before broadcast. The press photos, however, survive.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Countess Lose Weight” (1965) ~ At a health farm managed by Mr. Mooney, Lucy and Rosie (Ann Sothern) pedal away the pounds!
Tumblr media
“Happy Anniversary and Goodbye” (1974) ~ Norma and Fay (Nanette Fabray) keep fit for their husbands in Ball’s first post-series TV special. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a masseur.
SONG CYCLE
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Generation Gap” (1969) ~ Includes the song “Daisy Bell” aka “Bicycle Built for Two” written in 1892 by British songwriter Harry Dacre.
Tumblr media
The song is heard again in “Lucy’s Lucky Day” (1971).
You’ll look sweet Upon the seat Of a bicycle built for two!
CALL ME MR. BIKE
Tumblr media
“Tennessee Ernie Hangs On” (1954) ~ featured Richard Reeves as Ernie’s old pal Lester Bike, host of “Milliken’s Chicken Mash Hour”.  “Lucy Saves Milton Berle” (1964) ~ featured Milton Frome as Jerry Bike, Berle’s agent. The agent’s name is never spoken aloud, but is listed in the end credits.

LUCILLE BALL IS ON THE WARPATH
January 15, 1973
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By ELAINE SHEPARD, HOLLYWOOD (WNS)
Faint-hearted TV and film executives had better start circling the wagons. Lucille Ball is on the warpath.
Lucy never does anything by halves, and is feisty enough to take on the whole show business establishment. She has become one of the television industry's richest, most influential leaders, and she has a very personal set of moral weights and measures.
"A lot of dirty old men have been on a ragged, jagged toot of making money and pandering to an audience's basest instincts. As soon as they are not making money which is happening already those pictures will sit in the vault.”
"I know my audience is still out there so I'm not worried. But it's a terrible thing as a mother or father to try to shape your children morally and in every other way and have it torn down in one short season of movie-going. Because once they are 15 and a certain height they are allowed in to the theatres and everything they were taught to believe in is ripped apart. All this permissiveness has put tremendous responsibility on young people's shoulders. At least you and I had guidelines. Now they are not even allowed a conscience that tells them right from wrong."
Tacky pictures are something to be avoided like drafts and bad cooking, says Lucy. "At home, I've stopped many movies in the middle and sent guests and projectionists home.”
"Violence has gone beyond the bounds of tolerance. Today's films leave the young people in a spiritual wasteland. No direction. Everything is dirty, smelly, icky, lousy. They should have something to hope for, to dream about. We need a little fantasy. Not just sexual fantasies. We give them no hope any place."
Lucy was one of the first to demolish forever the cliché that beauty and brains are incompatible. Her energy is atomic. Smoking cigarettes at a cancerous rate, she was on the phone arranging last-minute details for her 80-year-old carrot - topped mother, Dede, to go fishing in Colorado. "My condominium is at 9,800 feet. You should see Dede going down the mountain with the kids on a belly-whacker at 40 miles an hour."
Tall and handsome Gary Morton says his 11-year alliance with Lucille is "the most wonderful thing that ever happened to him." It is a marriage that hums. You can sense the little waves of approval and the love arrows going back and forth. He gave Lucy a white juiced-up golf cart with her name on the door to carry her around the Universal Studios lot. Gary is executive producer of "Here's Lucy." This season represents his wife's 22nd year as a major CBS Television Network star.
With every rung of the theatrical ladder greased and the most slippery one at the top, Lucille keeps her watchful big blue eyes on 21-year-old daughter Lucie, a costar on the program. "She is quite serious about her career."
Lucie and her brother Desi IV (20 this month) have been raised with every advantage that wealth and love could provide. "Their father (Desi Arnaz III) is proud of them. He has a Moroccan palace in Baja. The kids, including Liza Minelli, visit them there. My son loves Liza very much and so do we. I knew her before I knew my own children. Our family is so close now it hurts. Very close. So close that the telephone bills from Desi's movie locations in Japan and Israel are astronomical."
She has no plans to retire. "I don't know what I'm going to do from one minute to the next. When it's time to make a decision I make it. I don't feel any need to change the comedy format. Response from the fans indicates it works."
How did movie standards get twisted? "Some producers have been given so much rope they are hanging themselves. A lot of pornographic stuff is going begging. We have good directors but no big studios with jobs for them. No 'papas' around anymore; nobody to set standards and give direction. Among the exceptions in this town are Disney and Ross Hunter. I say 'thank God' for them."
Former waitress, soda jerk, wholesale garment model and chorus girl, Lucy became the first woman president of a major Hollywood film producing company (Desilu Productions) with an estimated annual gross of $25,000,000. In 1967 she sold her interest in Desilu to Golf & Western Industries and is a substantial shareholder in that financial empire.
In 1968 she formed Lucille Ball Productions. Headquarters is rented from Universal Studios. "I am happy to be a tenant and not interested in being a big tycoon anymore. We will create new TV programs, specials and movies."
We didn't discuss Women's Lib. For Lucy is Women's Lib personified.
She also is Auntie Mame. The movie starts this month, will make a fortune for Warner Bros., and be a coronation for the queen of comedy.
Tumblr media
Monday, January 15, 1973, also saw the premiere of “Lucy and Her Genuine Twimby” (HL S5;E17) guest-starring Robert Cummings.
Tumblr media
On the same date, UPI reported that “Here’s Lucy” would return for a sixth season, marking Ball’s 23rd year on TV. Coincidentally, the following item reports that Lucy’s friend and frequent co-star Mary Wickes would recreated her Broadway and film role in a television version of “The Man Who Came To Dinner” for Hallmark Hall of Fame.
Tumblr media
[January 15, 1973, was also just before production began on the film musical Mame. Joan Crosby reported on the press event.]
It was like the old days of Hollywood. The red carpet was laid at Studio One at The Burbank Studios (nee Warner Brothers) and 200 people showed up for lunch with Lucille Ball and the cast of "Mame," the day before production.
Lucy made a great entrance in her silver-and-black outfit, with long earrings, cigarette holder to match, close cropped black hair and tightly wound silver turban. If you wonder why Mame couldn't be, like Lucy, a redhead. Lucy says a lot of thought went into the color, which will be used in the early scenes. Before the 20 years of Maine's life are finished she will also be seen as a blonde, redhead and finally, blue-tinted, silver-haired lady. Told that it's hard to get used to her with dark hair, Lucy smiled and said, "I can't get used to me, either."
Lucy will have about 45 costume changes in the musical, which delights her and should please the ladies.
Robert Fryer, who is co-producer of "Mame," said they needed an actress for the role who was "chic, humorous, warm and loving," and Lucy mugged her way through that.
Lucy said she was delighted to do "Mame" because it is "a four-letter word and so is love, so is care and so is hope." She added that so many films today lack these qualities. "Also, they don't give us anything to hum unless you want to come out of the theater humming a manure pile."
Lucy introduced costars Robert Preston, Bea Arthur (who played Vera on Broadway and will recreate it here), Jane Connell, the original Agnes Gooch, and darling Kirby Furlong; who will turn 10 during production.
Kirby, who is very small for his age, was wearing a tuxedo and director Gene Saks said, "Kirby always dresses that way. He gets up in the morning and jumps into his tux." Kirby laughed.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, in other papers, Mame’s casting was reported, concentrating on adult Patrick, played by Bruce Davison. The release incorrectly lists Madeline Kahn, who was initially cast as Gooch, but left the production, reportedly due to a conflict with Lucille Ball.

Positive holds off Kameko in a photo finish to claim the Betway Solario Stakes at Sandown
Positive waits fast-finishing Kameko in a photo finish to claim the Betway Solarium Stakes in Sandown
Positively, the hot 4/5 favorite was sent to Adam Kirby
The foal took over with a couple of furlongs to go to Sandown on Saturday
But Kameko was released late under Oisin Murphy, resulting in a photo finish

Positively earned a chance at one of the great end of season two-year-old races when they rush home at the Sunroom Stakes in Sandown.
The 4-5 favorite trained by Clive Cox has a lot to live up to. The Solario Stakes has a recent history of surrendering decent winners with three of the last six scorers – Kingman, Masar and Too Darn Hot – who are going to win a group with Masar's victory in the Derby.
Positive beat quickly finishing Tameko's nose to earn 33-1 2,000 Guineas quotes from Paddy Power.
Positive edge Tameko a nose to earn 33-1 2,000 Guineas quotes from Paddy Power.
His run was also an approval for Pinatubo, the outstanding two-year-old foal of the season so far, who beat him five lengths in the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
Cox believes that Positive improves all the time. The Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on October 12 could be the next step. Alternatively, the Royal Lodge Stakes on the same track on September 28 is an option if Cox chooses to walk his son of Dutch Art to one mile.
Cox said: & # 39; He is a very nice improving horse and I could not be more satisfied with the result. & # 39;
Owner Alan Spence, Chelsea's vice president, added: & # 39; He must have learned a lot today. He won his first race very easily and in the second he was in the back and when he came though Pinatubo had flown. Today is really the first time he has had a good race. & # 39;
Positive is driven home every day by jumping jockey Jerry McGrath. The foal gives Cox a strong hand in juvenile playing matches with stablemate and also Richmond Stakes winner Golden Horde.
Trainer Amanda Perrett will focus Lavender Blue on Group One Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on October 5 after ABBA's Benny Anderssen returned from a bad run in the decisive Oaks with a decisive length and a half victory in the Group Three Betway Atalanta Stakes.

Preview: The Epsom Derby
Saturday sees the renewal of what many believe is the greatest flat race in the world, The Epsom Derby. With a purse of £1.63 million, its expected to be a right cracker. I'm going to have a look at some of the horse i feel have a chance in the big one.
CRACKSMAN is the ride of Frankie Dettori. This son of Frankel, 1 of 2 in this race, is currently favourite in the ante post market, floating at around 9/2 and is expected to still be so on the day. This colt, trained by the formidable John Gosden, comes to Epsom unbeaten after a winning debut in a maiden at Newmarket back in October, and another win here over a mile and 2f in the main trial for this. The form looks solid and being out of Frankel, he is open to further improvement.
Another of major interest is CLIFFS OF MOHER. Arguably the best of A P O'Briens 7 entries, and probably Ryan Moores pick of the bunch. The winner of the Dee stakes at Chester 3 weeks ago, this son of Galileo, one of 7 in this field, could definitely have what it takes to win a Derby. There could be question marks over whether this has come too early in his career. That said, the talent is definitely there, and O'Brien often gets them ticking over at this time of year.
The second of the two Frankel colts here is EMINENT. Trained by Martyn Meade, he was last seen in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket 4 weeks ago. He could only manage 6th there but he came up against some very good opposition that day and was screaming out for a longer trip. Before the Guineas he was seen winning the Craven Stakes, also at Newmarket, which is really solid form. This 1m4f should be just what he's after and could be the key to the improvement he needs. His breeding suggest he's bound to get better with time, and although this isn't going to be easy, the potential is definitely there, and he can't be ruled out. The booking of champion jock Jim Crowley is a big positive.
Representing Sheikh Hamdam and Mark Johnston is PERMIAN. This son of Teofilo, an unbeaten winner of the Dewhurst stakes, is coming into this off the back of winning the Dante at York two weeks ago. He was impressive that day and kept on strongly suggesting the extra 2 furlongs here should suit. Interestingly, William Buick, a retained rider for Godolphin, and their top boy for that matter, has chosen PERMIAN over the three Godolphin runners. This could mean he thinks very highly of the Hamdam colt and could be a signpost. If he improves for his Dante win he will be a very strong contender here, and could be the one to beat.
With Godolphin in mind, attention turns to them. They have 3 chances here, but the strongest for me is DUBAI THUNDER. This colt was a truly impressive winner over his only start, where he was a 10 length winners Newbury a few weeks ago. He did that under Adam Kirby, and Kirby will partner up with him again for this. This will be Kirbys first ride in a Derby, but that shouldn't take away from the fact he is a tremendous jock. If he improves for that run he will be up there.
One of interest at a bigger price is DOUGLAS MACARTHUR. Another one of O' Briens, this colt, again a son of Galileo, he impressed me when he won the Derrinstown Stud Trial for this. Beating Yucatan and fellow Derby hope CAPRI, he showed grit to stay on well that day. At 25/1 I think he's a massive price and could be a major EW play in this.
Suggested Bets. Permian EW 11/1 Douglas MacArthur EW 25/1
