[Translation] Piece of Cake -Ai wo Sakebou- feat. Mineta Kazunobu
I hurt you, so you won’t let me go We’re both love’s prisoners I mean, I belong only to you I hate you, but I love you Come. Just like this, hurt me. Yes. Chop me up as you like. Until my LOVE wins over your HATE. Until we can swear that even yesterday’s tears weren’t a lie. I want to eat you up, a sweet, sad taste of love It can’t be helped, no matter what, I can’t hate you The more bored I feel, the more I love you You are certainly the hope of my life A spring without you, and I’ll be killed by summer. A city without you, and I wait for you to pass through. A room without you, and I’ll wilt with the flowers. A me without you, and I’ll even abandon my self. Scream of love It’s ok to be awkward, ok to be bad Scream of love I’ve understood the meaning of life So I’ll scream of love So loud, I’ll scream again and again Let’s hold hands 1000 times over. Let’s hold hands 1000 times over. We’re probably already broken. Let’s hold hands 1000 times over.

Before we headed to Narita airport, I went over to my aunt's house for a brief time. Check out time was 10 a.m., and we didn't have to get going until at least noon, so to kill some time, my aunt suggested I relax at her home -- a place I've never visited prior in the 30 years I've known her. My cousin welcomed me in, too, after my aunt and I done some small groceries. And unbeknownst to me, he had brought down some of his old music magazines that featured artists who he knew I was a fan of. He said, if I liked, I could keep them.
The day before, my aunt, my cousin and I went to go sing karaoke. I hadn't seen my cousin in 15 years, and frankly, I was not expecting to see him at all during my trip. I just didn't know of his whereabouts. And I was taken back by his kindness despite us not speaking to each other for so long. He helped me out as the three of us did some gift-shopping for my immediate family on the first half of the day, even paying for some of those gifts. We spoke relatively little, but after we got out of karaoke, he started opening up to me about the music he listened to when he was younger. I'm a bit bummed the hoodie I got for him as a gift didn't really fit him.
The first magazine he showed me was a 2009 issue of Ongaku To Hito with Perfume on the cover. Through my aunt, he knew I liked them and interviewed them recently, so he was happy to give it to me. But along with some other magazines with Perfume, he also got one with a tiny section on Aya Matsuura, whose "Love Namidairo" I sang when we went to karaoke together. It surprised me to know he took note of the stuff I liked. I'd bring up an artist to him as I sifted through the issues, and he'd immediately think back whether or not he had a copy that covered them.
He did, though, establish what he refused to part with: any that featured Hiroji Miyamoto of Elephant Kashimashi and a few special coverages of a Rock'inon Japan festival. It seemed too sentimental to him for me to inherit anyway, so I paid no mind. I started to get a feel of the kind of artist he felt a personal connection with, largely rock auteurs during the 2000s, and so I shared with him a picture of a particular album that I purchased during my trip: Ging Nang Boyz's Kimi To Boku No Dai Sanji Sekai Taisenteki Renai Kakumei. And lo behold, he'd bring down a couple of magazines that featured the band's Kazunobu Mineta. "I can't give these to you," he said. That, I understood, too.

year-end jdrama recommendation
5. Born to be a Flower (2018)
Tumblr media
10 episodes, 60min.
Who came up with the idea to put Elvis Presley - Love Me Tender as OST to this drama? Please tell me. I’d love to send them some flowers to express my gratitude.
I noticed some time ago that new jdramas have American pop songs in their OST. Here with Love Me Tender, and in Bokutachi ga yarimashita with Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You (pssst, Bokutachi was another big gold mine for me when it comes to “the best drama ost” playlist). At the beginning I was kinda confused hearing Elvis, but right after that first shock I loved it, and I would fill a complaint if they didn’t include it in every episode.
Pooh may not be the prettiest man out there, but definitely is the kindest, I can fight you on that, try me. He’s hard-working and simple-minded, yet intelligent, understanding and gentle, do you need more? He used to take care of his sick mother, who gave him a lot of solid advices on life, and I don’t know how much of it was really his mother’s saying, and how much did he figure out by himself, but it was impressive hearing him say all those wise things with such sincerity. Moreover, his mother was one of a kind, and I really enjoyed those bits where she was explaining to Pooh how life works. And how it comes that she was always right? Those damn old ladies, they’ve seen everything.
Tumblr media
Another year, another great performance by Ishihara Satomi. We’ve been seeing each other quite frequently this year, she has so many projects. Momo portrayed by Ishihara Satomi is a girl with an exquisite elegance often hidden behind an extravagant behaviour. She was joking at every opportunity she had. Silly, yet elegant. I can’t believe I’m joining those two adjectives in one sentence, I need to rethink my life. But that’s exactly how I embraced that character. A beautiful, educated lady who is not afraid to tell anyone off when needed... and sometimes she behaves like a gangster. The most enjoyable moment was when Pooh and his friends assumed she’s a hostess in a bar, and she played along with it, going as far as actually getting a job there. She invested in that joke, and with that she gained my respect forever. A crane in a dumpster, indeed.
The strongest point of this drama is that wonderful camera work. They knew what they were doing, what this drama is about, and they used it well. I was afraid that they won’t be able to capture the art of flower arranging in a right way. However, not only did they respect it, but also figured out how to profit from all arrangements in the best way possible. As for me the best scenes were definitely in a mirror room. The hidden monster in Tsukishima residence, right? Mysterious, frightening, and cold. So many fascinating scenes... Moreover, the deal maker is that one scene in the last episode, when Momo was doing flower arrangements while explaining what Pooh taught her. Both her words and flowers were so beautiful I was close to tears, and I couldn’t shake off that feeling till I finished the episode. I still am close to tears. Every time when I return to Born to be a Flower to rewatch my favourite moments, this one is a must-see for me.
It’s still a wonder to me how all those feelings were so well-written and down-to-earth. Relationship between Momo and Pooh had that natural flow I really adored. And if you want to feel some of that joy-filled pure love that bloomed between them, this drama is just for you.
Overall, Born to be a Flower for me was like the greatest essay on love.

---
If this song fails to make much sense, it's because of all the references inside of it. Rather than list them out one by one or try to explain what the lyricist was going for, though, I grouped them all together in the following list:
"Put in your earphones and you can hear the voice of the Milky Way" -> First Miyazawa Kenji reference, hints at his most famous work Night on the Galactic Railroad (sometimes translated as Milky Way Railroad), which is about a boy with a ridiculously sucky life that magically finds himself  traveling in a train with his one friend in the world, a boy named Campanella, through outer space. It also doubles as a callback to the Tanabata legend, as the Milky Way is what separates Orihime and Hikoboshi, two starcrossed lovers that are separated but never give up hope of being reunited.
"The New World Symphony rings out inside the silver desert" -> This is a reference to Antonin Dvorak's magnus opus, the New World Symphony.
"My name is Campanella–a night-prince with melted wings" -> I chose a specific pronoun for readability, but it downplays the original ambiguity in Japanese: is the singer Campanella? Are "you" (the listener) Campanella? Is it someone else? At any rate, Campanella’s "melted wings" are a reference to the plot of Night on the Galactic Railroad (warning: spoilers up ahead)
"A dream flying through the skies with a front crawl stroke" -> (Spoiler!:) The novel's Campanella forgoes both "heaven" and an endless space journey with his friend to save a child from drowning in a river (and is implied to have died swimming himself) and considers the ability to do so "true heaven". Basically he chooses to go and meet someone even if the end of (his) world approaches.
"The blue rabbit's eyes are cherries" -> Obligatory explanation though it's probably common knowledge, but just like Westerners see a man's face on the moon, Japanese see a moon-rabbit. The blue here is a reference to the moon's pale color, and the "cherries" are a cute re-imagining of a rabbit's characteristically red eyes
"A moon princess that dropped her ring on September 11th" -> I did a quick google search but it’s apparently not clear among Japanese fans whether this line references the American tragedy of 9/11 that shocked the world (the song came out in 2003, so it would have definitely still been at the forefront of the alt-rock scene, and Night on the Galactic Railroad also has a similar reference to the tragedy of the Titanic which had happened 15 years prior to the book being published) or whether the singer chose it for personal reasons. At any rate, “moon princess” is likely also a reference to Kaguya-hime, who like Orihime and Hikoboshi, is separated from her love the Emperor in her story.
"You're a star and it's devastating" -> Literally “you’re a star: how heartbreaking!” This is the ending line to one of Miyazawa Kenji's poems, "Yabureshi Shounen no Utaeru". The poem is about a boy who sees a shooting star near the break of dawn and associates its beauty and light with the person he likes. However, as it disappears (“melts”) into the night sky, he’s broken-hearted–not for the star itself, but because the person he likes is so dear to him that even seeing a star that reminds him of her disappear is too sad. In this context, the line can perhaps be taken as “the star that is you is devastatingly dear”, which is probably how it’s also meant to be taken in this song.
Finally, a reminder that the mou ii kai? mada da yo! interchange is how Japanese hide-and-seek is played: rather than count to 10 and say “ready or not, here I come!” the seeker counts to 10 and then asks “ready? (have you found a spot yet?)” and the hider has the option to say “not yet! (give me more time)” or “ready! (come find me)”.
Also, this is actually a cover of the singer (Chicchi)’s favorite band, Ging Nang Boyz / Going Steady.

Shingo Natsume (One-Punch Man S1, Space Dandy) is directing an original sci-fi anime with Madhouse titled “Sonny Boy,” premiering July 15th. Mangaka Hisashi Eguchi is credited with creating the original character designs that Norifumi Kugai will adapt for the anime. A teaser was posted on April 28th.
The ensemble drama centers around 36 boys and girls. On August 16, midway through a seemingly endless summer vacation, middle school third-year student Nagara, the mysterious transfer student Nozomi, and classmates such as Mizuho and Asakaze, are suddenly transported from their tranquil daily lives to a school adrift in an alternate dimension. They must survive with the super powers that have awakened within them.
Eguchi has not done work for an anime since Mujin Wakusei Survive (Uninhabited Planet Survive) in 2003-04, where he also did the original character designs, so it’s very interesting to see him return to the field after all these years. In addition, vocalist and guitarist Kazunobu Mineta of the rock band Ging Nang Boyz, whom Eguchi has done album artwork for, wrote the opening theme “Shonen Shojo” (Boys and Girls) for the anime.
Tumblr media
The teaser for the upcoming anime also has a reference to Stop!! Hibari-kun!, one of Eguchi’s most known manga.
