Ronald Reagan: Not A Theologian!

Dr. Alfred Oscar Coffin (May 14, 1861 - September 6, 1933) was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in biological sciences and ended his career as Professor of Romance Languages at Langston University. Born in Pontotoc, Mississippi, he earned his BS at Fisk University and his MS and Ph.D. in Biology at Illinois Wesleyan University in 1889. Beginning in 1887, he taught for two years at Alcorn Agricultural & Mechanical College. He was Professor of Mathematics and Romance Language at Wiley University (1889-95) where he found time to write a treatise on the native plants there. Back at Alcorn A&M (1895-98), he worked as the campus disbursement agent. He was a public school principal (1898-99) in San Antonio and Kansas City, Missouri. Starting in 1910 for several years he worked as an advance agent for Blind Boone Concert Company, promoting the blind ragtime musician.

His most significant scholarly accomplishment was The Origin of the Mound Builders which tracked the ancient Indian mound builders of the Mississippi Valley to their origin in southeastern Mexico. The second was his book Land Without Chimneys, Or The Byways of Mexico. Having traveled extensively in Mexico—particularly Monterey, Mexico City, and Guadalajara—the book is part travelogue, part history of the people of Mexico, and, oddly enough, part speculation on a connection between the ancient peoples of the region and the fabled civilization of Atlantis. Kansas City, MO – The Hall of Fame Committee and Small College Basketball is excited to announce the Hall of Fame Class of 2024. Once again, this year the class is made up of some of the greatest coaches, players, and contributors at the Small College Basketball level. These individuals have truly left their mark on the game. John McCarthy had this to say about this year’s class:

"Congratulations to the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2024,” stated McCarthy. “Each and every member of this class has clearly earned and deserved to be included in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame, and we are thrilled to welcome them into this prestigious national Hall of Fame. [1] The original campus is located in Leawood, Kansas, with additional locations in Olathe, Kansas, downtown Kansas City, Missouri, Blue Springs, Missouri and Overland Park, Kansas. [2] It is one of the largest United Methodist congregations in the world and reported a membership of 15,359[3] in 2020. It maintains 5 campuses and had an average weekly attendance of over 13,000 people in 2019. [4] The United Methodist Saint Paul School of Theology moved its facilities from Kansas City, Missouri, to the Church of the Resurrection in fall of 2013.

2024 Bevo Francis Top 25 Watch List Announced

Kansas City, MO – The National Awards Committee and Small College Basketball are happy to announce the Bevo Francis Top 25 Watch List for the 2023-24 season. The Top 25 Watch List consists of some of the top players from the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, USCAA, and NCCAA. With the amount of talented players and phenomenal seasons across all of these levels, the National Award Committee continues to have the difficult task of narrowing the list down. John McCarthy discussed this years Top 25 list:

"Congratulations to the 25 players that have made this prestigious Bevo Francis Award Watch List,” stated McCarthy. “This is a list of the elite of the elite in college basketball at the small college levels, based on our criteria. I am very grateful to our committee members, as they have provided great insight and information." 2024 marks the eighth year of the Bevo Francis Award. Past winners include Dominez Burnett of Davenport University in 2016, Justin Pitts of Northwest Missouri State University in 2017, Emanuel Terry of Lincoln Memorial University in 2018, Aston Francis of Wheaton College in 2019, Kyle Mangas of Indiana Wesleyan University in 2020 and Trevor Hudgins of Northwest Missouri State University in 2022. In 2023, RJ Sunahara of Nova Southeastern was named the winner of the Bevo Francis Award. The award was not presented during the 2021 season.

The Clarence “Bevo” Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball. Considerations will be season statistics and individual achievements, awards, personal character and team achievements. This is an incredibly prestigious award, as this award will only be given to one player within Small College Basketball per season.

Next up on April 5th, the finalists of this year’s award will be announced. The Bevo Francis Award winner will be announced on April 8th .
