Arms {Capt. Polenin (K-19) x Reader}
Pairing: Capt. Polenin (K-19: The Widowmaker) x reader
Warnings: F! reader, drabble, (18+) some fluff first followed by smut
Tumblr media
His fitness has to be up to military standards and boy does he pass with flying colors - especially in his arm strength
He's always seen his body as a vehicle for his service position as captain and as motivation for his subordinates
It also doesn't hurt that you have a soft spot for his arms
when you are walking down the street he will offer you his arm and you will link your hands around him and rest your head on him
If the subway is crowded he will hold the bar above his head and extend his other arm for you to brace yourself on as if it were a railing: he his just as sturdy if not more secure
If he is ever working out for too long and you miss him he offers an alternative that the both of you can take part in
He lays you down of a soft blanket or pillows and assumes the push up position over you
This way he can work on his core, leg, and arm strength and get rewarded with a kiss from you every time he finishes a rep
He wears only tank tops around the house leading up to his deployment because of how hot and bothered it makes you
He will be trying to read but you will plant yourself firmly on his lap to get his attention
You start to kiss him and run your hands up and down his arms to feel the bumps and ridges of his muscles
While you make out you'll try out some new dirty talk and say, "how strong are you, big boy. Show me what those arms can do" while squeezing his biceps
He'll grunt to indicate he has accepted your challenge
He'll scoop you you up and cup your bum with one arm like you weight nothing at all and use his other to unbutton your blouse while your legs instinctually wrap around his waist
it takes only his thumb and pointer fingers to reach around you and unclasp your bra

"Go back and tell them that they're improving. As you say, you know nothing about radiation sickness. Perhaps they are."
I liked the part with the bizarre 3D movie-esque soccer ball.
A heavily formulaic and predictable, but decently put together movie. The Russian accents from Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson were truly abhorrent, and though I imagined that I'd get used to it eventually, I never did. There was a bit where they had old-man make-up on, and it was super weird.
Really solid cinematography, and a lot of nice footage of actual submarines, particularly in the scene of them leaving port. My biggest complaint, as always, was the shakey-cam footage for dramatic shots of people standing completely still and calmly talking. Something about that just effortlessly pisses me off.
The most baffling thing about K-19 was its very existence. It's like a patriotic propaganda movie about a heroic soviet sub crew, but it's also heavily critical of the USSR at every turn. This wouldn't be all that unusual, except that it was made in 2002, and as far as I can tell nobody involved was even Russian.
It's unclear to me exactly what, if anything, the movie was trying to say. I mean, it was about a decade too late to be criticising the soviet union, the anti-nuclear angle was under-explored, and the actual event and its presentation were too dry for an expensive Hollywood blockbuster. Well I love submarines, so whatever the hell their reason was, I'm glad they made it.
A strange movie. Somewhat slow at times, but pretty good overall.

K-19: The Widowmaker (2002)
Tumblr media
K-19: The Widowmaker is a great film that begins to fall apart as soon as the main plot ends and we dive into its epilogue. This could have joined the ranks of the all-time great submarine thrillers like Das Boot and The Hunt for Red October but then, it doesn't. You may say it's wrong to have just a few minutes affect the picture’s rating so much. This time it can’t be helped.
In 1961, the Soviet Union launches the K-19, its first ballistic missile nuclear submarine. By guaranteeing the Communist empire a weapon right outside the Whitehouse’s doorstep, the sub single-handedly guarantees mutually-assured destruction and therefore, makes armageddon impossible. After a series of incidents, K-19’s captain, Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson) is replaced by Alexei Vostrikov (Harrison Ford) and the crew are none pleased. When Captain Vostrikov pushes the crew to its breaking point and the reactor’s cooling system springs a leak, the crew begins questioning his authority.
Like in The Hunt for Red October, you’ll have to get past some of the actors’ accents, which is going to be difficult. Liam Neeson is great but he doesn’t seem to be trying to do the Russian accent thing very hard. Ford? He’s so unambiguously American it’s jarring to see him in a tuque, much less a Russian sub. It might’ve been easier to swallow had the rest of the crew followed suit… but everyone else is extremely convincing in their parts. I’m not sure what was going on there.
Hopefully, you can get beyond this initial stumbling block, as the meat of the picture is exciting. There’s something inherently cinematic about submarines despite being boring to look at from the outside. There are so many things that can go wrong – the crushing pressures of the deep, fires, air loss, flooding, mutiny, nuclear threat – that you’re always on edge. Then, the reactor springs a leak. The vessel plagued with so many issues during its construction that it was dubbed “The Widowmaker” is now a death trap. The crew has to find a way to stop the emanating radiation and decide what to do about the Americans above them. It’d be a tricky situation for anyone, but for Russians? You know they’re too proud to admit defeat. There’s no way Vostrikov will let the state-of-the-art machine fall into the hands of the country’s enemy, even if it means sacrificing every last man under his command. He's been relentlessly testing the crew and the submarine’s limits just to prove what an impeccable vessel it is. The film’s based on true events but even then, you don’t know what is going to happen next. You don't feel the 138-minute running time at all.
And now we come to the picture’s conclusion. What I can best compare it to is the last scene in Schindler’s List, except that instead of making everything we saw previously feel even more powerful, it comes off as a desperate attempt to wring sympathy from the story we just sat through and leave us wondering what the meaning of heroism truly is. We already know. The epilogue adds nothing. It’s such a miscalculation I’m tempted to say you should just cut the picture off as soon as the lead-in text disappears.
K-19: The Widowmaker unfortunately stumbles right at the end, but that’s not enough to damn it. There are plenty of intense scenes that’ll make you sweat and although the accents are a bit off-putting, the performers are terrific. You don’t know where the story is going and you’ll care about what will happen to the crew. This makes it worth seeing. (On DVD, March 28, 2018)

Note
a few days of cold and rainy weather unlocked some memories so I have even more recommendations, that are more or less fitting the theme of ocean horror:
The Shallows (2016) - a woman vs angry shark Deep Blue Sea (1999) - people vs angry mutant sharks Dead Calm (1989) - stranded on the sea and the horror is other people Old (2021) - cursed beach The Cave (2005) - cave diving in Romania; no ocean but a lot of action takes place underwater. Guess what type of creatures are living in these Romanian caves. Have I mentioned that it does take place in Romania? Virus (1999) - computer virus from space had taken control of a ship. I only remeber that as a kid I liked it.
a man vs Nature: The Perfect Storm (2000) - drama with the creepiness level zero, but I remember some big scary waves The Guardian (2006) - the only thing I remember about this are big waves All Is Lost (2013) (drama) - one man on a dameged boat vs dangerous ocean. more beautifull than creepy
claustrophobic submarine vibes (WWII dramas/thrillers): U-571 (2000) In Enemy Hands (2004) Below (2002) - I'm not sure if I actually saw this, but this one has 'horror' in description
Classic USSR submarine vs USA submarine (subgenre of the above category, but in more modern times): K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) The Hunt for Red October (1990) (an adaptation of Tom Clancy's novel of the same name) Crimson Tide (1995)
Books: Duma Key by Stephen King (more of a seaside horror than ocean horror) Icebound by Dean Koontz (I have zero memory of what exactly was the plot, but description on wiki seems to fit the theme)
and this post and this one, and this music video, and this video
And from my 'to watch later' list: Breaking Surface 2020, The Beach House 2019, Extortion 2017, The Boat 2018, Triangle 2009, Harpoon 2019, Abandoned 2015. Deepwater Horizon 2016, The Ice Road 2021, Against the Sun 2014, The Finest Hours 2016, The Last Voyage of Demeter 2023. Pressure 2015. Adrift 2018, In the Heart of the Sea 2015. Nordsjøen 2021. Pionér 2013, Deep Rising 1998. The Reef 2010, DeepStar Six 1989, Shark Bait 2022, Mary 2019, Sweetheart 2019
This list is. Amazing. Thank you so much. Definitely some that had been on my list but a lot of others I hadn’t yet come across! I ended up watching The Cave this weekend while knitting.
Also really hoping to get to the theater to check out The Last Voyage of the Demeter!

ღ Love Languages
Summary: The love language of Liam Neeson characters ღ
ICYMI: A love language is the way a person prefers to express their love and or receive it from a partner. There is no one right way to love!

Acts of Service - (Rob Roy)
Tumblr media
He loves being the head of the house and the provider for you and your family
He never stifles the chance to do some heavy lifting if it means a happier wife is waiting for him
Pride swells in his chest when he watches the burning logs he chopped hours earlier warm you in the dead of night
Seeing him tend to cattle and use his whip to tame horses stirs something within you
He recognizes the labor you perform in the home and feels like it is only right to take some of that burden off of you
One day he sees you washing pottery and comes up behind you at the water basin to "help" but starts kissing up your hairline
"I'm trying to work here" you giggle out as he wrap his has from around your frame to take the pottery out of your hands to place on the ground
He turns you around to face him, your hands covered in suds, and he looks to you with pure adoration
He thought of the best service he could give you: another child
He wouldn't rest until you were waddling around the house with the swell of your belly serving as a reminder of his love for you - being able to wait on you hand and foot as you make him a father
Quality Time - (Carl Wayne Anderson: Suspect)
Tumblr media
You met Carl in the county jail when you were assigned to his case as a public defender
from then on he liked being around you, be it in one on one meetings or by your side during trial
A shy smile is buried under his thick beard when you stay an extra two hours with him to prepare for a hearing the next day
He's learning to write more legibly for trial, for you
You have so much patience, he thinks, never giving up on him when he flips a 'b' to a 'd' or gets made at himself for mistakes and lashes out (never on you)
He feels a warmth that radiates off of you, drawing him closer, feeling less on edge regarding his surroundings and judgmental jurors
You are also one of the only people who keep eye contact with him when speaking. So many people are intimidated by him but you meet his gaze with compassion
When he gets an unexpected visitors notice over the weekend he isn't surprised to see you there with a thick binder of exhibits to go over, takeout food, and a new packet of chalk
Time is always fleeting and delicate, but that pressure was amplified knowing Carl was on trial and risking time in prison
You two never had any short encounters either, always an hour or longer, though he wished you could stay forever
Receiving Gifts - (Capt. Mikhail Polenin: K-19 The Widowmaker)
Tumblr media
His long deployments at sea made him yearn for you, day in day out
To serve as a reminder of his faith and his love, he showers you with gifts of all kinds
a necklace with his initial, fragrant perfumes, silky soft nighties, and a gorgeous bouquet of flowers when he meets you at the pier
Nothing is too extravagant for a man who didn't know if he would ever see you again
You tell him he is in your thoughts every day and that you have no eyes for anyone else but he wants the world to know he is your shadow, he is your man by your side or 3,000 miles away
He also sends you love letters as often as he can
They are full of poetry and prayers to see you again
You saved each and everyone of them, keeping them safe in your jewelry box until you can hear him say them to you in person
His favorite gift you have given him was a collection of photographs of yourself. Some are headshots, or from home-movies, not to mention the nude photograph of you wearing his dog tags
You are his gift from God. You are his motivation to complete his mission. You are his motivation to live
Physical Touch - (Hannibal: The A-Team)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The man is handsy and his pent up emotions from training and deployment has him eager to touch you any way he can
He has some restraint when he is around new recruits, trying to show composure as an upper level officer with just his hand resting on the small of your back
He is a bit more loose around his team members, knowing he has earned their respect and won't lose it if they see him slightly simping over you
He'll pull you into his lap instead of a folding chair, insisting that you'd be more comfortable on his lap this way instead of the flimsy plastic
He will twirl your hair or tap a beat to your thigh absent mindedly while listening to a mate of his talk, relaxed in knowing you are there, you are actually there with him
When you are finally alone he will worship you for hours until you are overstimulated and a whimpering mess under him
He doesn't half ass any mission either, so once he has made you cum all night, he will give you the best after care, cuddling you and massaging your sore legs
He loves it when you make the first move and interlock you fingers with his on the walk from base to a pub
Feeling 10 feet tall he strides around base knowing only he can touch you, only he can get close enough to smell your hair, caress your skin, taste your desperation and love
Leaving you is like tearing off a limb for him, but he'll squeeze you tight to embed in his memory your edges, your fit in his arms
Words of Affirmation - (Qui-Gon Jinn: Star Wars)
Tumblr media
He lives by his comm link so you never are too far away
You are concerned that your calls are annoying but he assures you are music to his ears to hear about your day, a funny story, or to lull him to sleep with a song
He reads constantly to find new words to express his love for you. Deeper, sensual praise that you could never forget about and have only heard Qui-Gon use
There is never a day when he doesn't say good morning and good night, letting you know you are the first and last thing he thinks of each day
Pet names are reserved for you, rarely does he give that affection to outsiders (he still has love for Obi and Ani)
Praise kink!!
His cadence in bed, the tempo his words follow to punctuate his movements are delicious
When he hears you whimper and thank him for being so caring he thinks he could cum in his pants right then and there
You are in ecstasy when he talks you through your high and climax together
He says "I love you" more often then he breathes, since you are his life line

Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for which film?
Tumblr media
In 2009, Kathryn Bigelow (born 1951) became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for the film 'The Hurt Locker' (2008). It is an American war thriller set in the year 2004 during the Iraq War. It stars Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Ralph Fiennes, and Guy Pearce, and is considered by many film critics to be the best film of 2009 and one of the best films of the 2000s.
The storyline focuses on the bomb disposal team, led by Sergeant William James (Renner), who recklessly plunges them into a deadly game of urban combat, behaving as if he is invincible. The team struggle to control their new leader, while the city around them explodes into chaos.
'The Hurt Locker' received nine nominations at the 82nd Academy Awards, of which it won the following six: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Film Editing. Kathryn Bigelow won several other awards for directing including a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Award and various critics' awards. For many of these awards, she was the first woman to receive for Best Director.
Before directing 'The Hurt Locker', Bigelow had directed several films, including 'Near Dark' (1987), 'Point Break' (1991), 'Strange Days' (1995), and 'K-19: The Widowmaker' (2002). Bigelow was married to director James Cameron from 1989 to 1991.
