#Jounouchi joins a gang

when i was 13 i wrote an essay explaining the rationale of puppyshipping to some guy in a skype chatroom. found the essay again. wanted to rewrite it. without further ado:
Tumblr media
HERE’S HOW PUPPYSHIPPING CAN STILL WIN: THE SEQUEL: 2 PUPPY 2 SHIPPING (4.3k words)
kaiba and jounouchi’s relationship stands at an awkwardly undefinable place in canon: they're not on good terms, but they're not enemies either. they know each other too well to be called passing acquaintances, but kaiba hardly acknowledges jounouchi as a duelist, let alone a potential rival. at best? they're mutual nuisances.
or, that's how jounouchi and kaiba choose to define it. both of them would love if their dynamic were that simple, nothing more than a back-and-forth of petty insults—but that’s not the truth. and they'll dance around the truth for five whole seasons, purposefully downplaying why they’re so obsessed with provoking each other whenever they’re in the same place.
they're foils.
—but the term "foils" is so dulled within fandom lexicon now that it can mean literally anything from two guys who just disagree with each other sometimes, so i'll sharpen this further. jounouchi and kaiba see their counterpart less as an individual person but more a representation of who they could have become if they had respectively, in their eyes, never learned the lessons they needed to. they project their own ideals onto the other and come away thinking they already know how the other operates, and the fun thing is, even when working from conjecture, their assumptions of one another happen to hit far closer to home than they have any right to.
so really, they can't leave each other alone because they can't stop seeing their failures reflected back at them. the other is a defective version of themselves that they need to correct because they can't stand constantly acknowledging who they used to be, so they try to bend the other to be more like their own image—an "i can fix him (by dragging him down to my level)".
jounouchi and kaiba’s parallels run down to their origins, both set up against abysmal family situations they have no choice but to make the best of. seto and mokuba are orphaned at a young age until seto gets them adopted, while katsuya is separated from his sister and stuck with a deadbeat father who can't carry his own weight. trapped in an environment where nobody expects anything worthwhile from him, katsuya joins a gang and lives out a self-admittedly miserable existence before befriending yugi, while seto is in a battlefield of his own, faced with protecting mokuba while enduring against the nightmare that is gozaburo kaiba’s parenting.
what they do to survive those conditions determines the outlooks they carry for the rest of their lives: jounouchi learns that losing is inescapable and the best you can do is learn how to cope with it, whereas kaiba learns that losing is something you must protect yourself from because there's only so much you can afford to lose.
jounouchi is positioned as the underdog, fighting tooth-and-nail for every victory he can manage, while kaiba has power in excess and holds to the belief that it’s all he really needs. one would argue that they have the perspective the other lacks—they argue that they have the perspective the other lacks. but in my opinion? it doesn't actually matter. what interests me is how they treat each other as a result.
side: seto kaiba
kaiba degrades jounouchi a lot. like, to an uncomfortable extent. you know that one post that’s like “why does bullying exist? why are you mad that i’m ugly?” why is kaiba so mad over the fact that jounouchi loses so much?
it’s projection. he’s just holding jounouchi to the same standard he holds himself to. you need to be powerful if you want to play the same games as kaiba, and seeing jounouchi so openly lean on his friends, ask for help, and have the audacity to lose sets kaiba off because he’s not playing the way he’s supposed to. kaiba rubs jounouchi's losses in his face because he believes that's what loss is supposed to look like, and that it’s jounouchi’s fault for not understanding that yet. kaiba is trying to teach him. to kaiba, this degradation might as well be an act of generosity.
while kaiba stayed true to his own ambitions, seizing kaibacorp from gozaburo and turning it into a children's entertainment company, he beat gozaburo at his own game not by inventing new rules but by playing it better than his adoptive father ever could. and as impressive as that is, it’s not sustainable. gozaburo kills himself when faced with his own defeat, and kaiba internalizes this lesson: that all losses are final, and it’s better to die than adapt to the consequences of a defeat. gozaburo’s death was a suicide, but in the context of their game, kaiba might as well have killed him regardless.
he mirrors this when he threatens to kill himself in duelist kingdom, his heightened emotions catastrophizing losing the duel to immediately equal failing mokuba and coming to the conclusion that if he loses mokuba he’d rather be dead. being someone so fervently self-reliant, any alternate solution, a possibility that he can lose here and still find a different way to rescue mokuba never crosses his mind. and, look, this isn’t his fault. this is the only way of living he’s ever been taught. he’s never learned how to cope in the event of failure because he’s never had the luxury to fail to begin with.
he's burned and rebuilt himself over and over again to survive in the world he operates in, and that’s why jounouchi pisses kaiba off so personally. jounouchi loses so much and so messily, and kaiba tries to show him that if he doesn’t start reinventing himself from the broken pieces of his defeats until all that’s left of him are jagged edges the same way he has, he’s never going to win. but jounouchi…does win. and keeps winning. and even when he does lose, it’s as if he creates new victories for himself, like there’s still value to playing a game with someone when you don’t win it—power of friendship bullshit and whatever. jounouchi is still here, a competitor that kaiba can no longer write off as much as he desperately wants to. (and, yeah, it is pretty ironic how jounouchi will jump through a million hoops to get kaiba to look at him, but he doesn't realize that he doesn't need to do anything to keep kaiba’s attention, only continue being himself.)
jounouchi refuses to compromise who he is and still manages to get far when in kaiba’s mind, that shouldn’t be possible; he’s supposed to be punished the way kaiba was. jounouchi is proof that you can take a devastating blow and move on from it, that even when you do fuck up spectacularly, there’s still something worthwhile in starting again tomorrow.
so kaiba constantly needs to prove that he’s better than jounouchi, that jounouchi isn’t even worth his time in order to justify his worldview. because if kaiba isn’t right, then he'll have no choice but to confront the fact that the war is over. that his circumstances aren’t instant life or death anymore and that even though he’s freed himself from gozaburo’s influence, there’s still further growth as a person he could stand to undergo, now divorced from the harsh conditions of his upbringing. jounouchi is a testament to how it’s possible to make peace and move on from the past without constantly bleeding for closure, that maybe, kaiba’s headlong quest to get the last word on his rivalry with yami yugi may not actually be as fulfilling as he thinks.
but admitting that you might need to change the way you live feels like a defeat in and of itself—it’s infuriating to hear that after everything you’ve had to learn, the way you live now isn’t good enough. that surviving insurmountable trauma doesn’t inherently make you better or more worthy than other people—it just traumatizes you, and is something you must heal from. so, instead of reflecting on these revelations, it’s so much easier for kaiba to tell himself that jounouchi is only ever graceful when he’s dead.
side: katsuya jounouchi
jounouchi is very stuck on this idea that he needs to be useful. his dad is an alcoholic with a gambling addiction and he believes it's not only his duty to pay his father's debts, but to be the household's sole source of income. his sister needs eye surgery and he believes it's his responsibility as an older brother not only to pay for it, but to act as her primary emotional support to get the surgery and throughout her recovery process. haga throws yugi's exodia into the ocean and jounouchi blames himself for not stopping it. jounouchi gets mind-controlled by malik and blames himself for causing his friends anguish from it. mai literally gets jounounchi’s soul stolen and he apologizes to her for messing up and making her sad. it's habitual, jounouchi doesn't know how to stop taking on the burdens of other people.
if you live with the mentality that you’re inevitably going to fail for long enough, you’ll come away with the belief that caring about your own wellbeing isn’t worth the effort. it depends on how pessimistic you want to read it, if it’s just his love language or jounouchi compensating for the damning act of being himself, but jounouchi quantifies his worth by how much he provides for other people. he’s always jumping in the line of fire for the sake of others because if you constantly undervalue your own wellbeing, you always have less to lose. as the underdog, he may not be as overtly powerful as kaiba or yugi, but he can still give himself away, and he’s convinced himself that it’s what he’s supposed to do. jounouchi is still new to this whole friendship thing. after a lifetime of supporting himself by himself, he doesn't know when he's allowed to ask for help yet—he’s supposed to be the help, dammit.
a key distinction between jounouchi and kaiba’s upbringings is that while kaiba’s biological parents died in an accident, jounouchi’s parents are still alive and they choose not to be responsible for him. jounouchi is conditioned to fend for himself by himself because having a parental figure actually present in his life isn’t a luxury he gets to have. to jounouchi, there has to be a reason why his mother only takes shizuka and never goes back for him in the six years he’s left with his father, and he rationalizes this with his notions of masculinity: he’s a strong man who can handle it. jounouchi is not delicate, he can endure it. men are responsible for their own circumstances. kaiba is hyperindependent out of a mixture of spite, paranoia, and self-defense. jounouchi is hyperindependent because he believes he deserves it. it’s the reason why he believes he’ll finally have a good relationship with his father if he just wins enough money to pay off his gambling debts—jounouchi can fix everything if only he were man enough to, and he can get people to stay if he demonstrates himself useful enough.
so death doesn’t carry nearly as much weight to jounouchi as it does to kaiba. in kaiba’s eyes, death is the punishment for failure, but to jounouchi, death is just the natural consequence for the kind of life he leads. he can't stop himself from fighting for the people he loves until he’s spent everything and forced to stop (read: dies), so during the several times jounouchi is confronted with his own death, he meets it with a solemn acceptance. like, yeah, it sucks, but he doesn’t regret the actions he took to end up here—he’d do it all over again, frankly. it’s better to die than not give everything he can, and at least he was able to give his life in service to someone else. it’s not necessarily good to die, but it doesn’t matter as much if he does.
so where kaiba is afraid of losing, jounouchi is afraid of outliving his usefulness (and being abandoned as a result), and kaiba disrupts jounouchi’s worldview specifically because he puts his ideology on the defensive. to jounouchi, kaiba’s presence never demands a question of “what can you do for me?” (nothing, kaiba doesn’t want jounouchi to do anything for him, and frankly, he’d be insulted if jounouchi even tried) but “what makes you worthy of standing on the same level as me?”, and jounouchi can’t sacrificial lamb get set on fire die a billion times into getting kaiba into seeing it his way (rather, that would only prove him right: kaiba would love nothing more than for jounouchi to lose the ability to fight and finally align with his preconceived notions of how the world works), and he can’t argue that his value is in how much he provides for others because that’s a non-answer. kaiba doesn’t care.
kaiba’s presence forces jounouchi into a position of self-reflection: jounouchi works so hard to preserve the friendships he’s created, but who is he—what does he value about himself in the absence of it? jounouchi needs to acknowledge something inherently valuable about himself if he wants to counter kaiba in any meaningful way, and it’s not like he doesn’t have valuable qualities either: he’s tenacious, he’s resourceful, he’s a quick learner—it takes intelligence to rank as high as he does in tournaments, but he undervalues all of it. these traits are all to be expected, they don’t actually count as extraordinary when it’s him. they’re only remarkable when they’re being applied to something greater. jounouchi believes he has the potential to become strong (and valuable by extension), only with the stipulation that he’s never actually there yet. he focuses too much on his inadequacies, constantly pontificating on how he needs to become a “true duelist”, but by the way he speaks about the title, the only way to be a true duelist is be named yugi muto, i guess.
so it’s very jounouchi-esque for him to miss this point with near deliberate precision and try to make himself useful to kaiba anyway. while kaiba is bent on seeing jounouchi fail to prove that his cynicism is superior to jounouchi’s altruism, the inverse is that jounouchi sees his old self in kaiba and he’s dying to teach kaiba a lesson. during battle for bronze, jounouchi states that they used to be the same, people who only relied on themselves and thought they’d be fine living like that. the argument jounouchi makes is that living that way is fucking miserable. he calls kaiba out: you’re supposed to be having fun. why are you playing duel monsters if you’re not having fun? he’s trying to show kaiba that he can be useful and teach kaiba things if kaiba would just let him, but for reasons mentioned in both of their sections, kaiba isn’t interested in being taught anything.
while less malicious in display, it's important to note that jounouchi’s method of trying to teach kaiba doesn't make him the better person here. jounouchi isn’t coming from a place of understanding when he lectures kaiba, he’s coming from a place of misdirected self-flagellation. and from kaiba's perspective, jounouchi is just dispensing unwarranted advice for the sake of his own ego. the most egregious example is when jounouchi picks a fight with kaiba in duelist kingdom, demanding they duel when kaiba is clearly not in the mood, busy with more pressing matters like, i don’t know, trying to rescue his abducted brother? so, okay, maybe a little bit inconsiderate on jounouchi’s part.
they're two ideological extremes: kaiba lashes out at the world while jounouchi gives himself to it, and jounouchi will keep barging in on kaiba with his life lessons because it’s the only way he wants to engage with kaiba’s arguments otherwise. jounouchi interprets kaiba’s rejection of his ideals as the equivalent of the stubbornness jounouchi had before befriending yugi, and he uses it as a reason to keep pushing, not understanding that while he may have found the most honorable path for himself, you can imagine how constantly burning yourself for others isn’t very…appealing. or sustainable. and that maybe it’s something you need to work on, actually.
conclusion: how i WIN
what’s fun about jounouchi and kaiba is how wrong they are. they genuinely can't live the way the other demands them to, their respective environments won’t allow it. if jounouchi chased victory with the same cutthroat relentlessness as kaiba, he probably never would have left his gang. or, at least, he’d lose the selfless devotion and consideration he has for others, traits that helped him build his support system, and he never would have found the friendships he values in his life—his willingness to change and start again was how he was able to befriend yugi to begin with. (and if you wanted to get really extreme with hypotheticals, his self-destructive tendencies could have grown so severe in the absence of a support system that he probably would wind up getting himself killed somewhere. lol.) inversely, if kaiba granted himself the freedom to worry less about the outcome as long as he enjoyed himself, he’d put mokuba’s safety at constant risk. kaiba’s guarded nature isn’t without reason, there are powerful corporate executives who would love to see him fail, and there are very real consequences if kaiba slips up for even a second and gives his opposition any leeway. the way they live works for them because it’s theirs. it’s not so much that either of their lifestyles are in dire need of correction, but that the other represents the possibility that they could be living better.
and this is fantastic because it means that, despite what they think, neither of them are in the “wrong” and must learn to change their idiot ways or that the solution is to strong-arm each other into some kind of compromise. it’s a battle of perceived weakness. they need to, naturally and individually, accept that the traits they’ve always deemed immature and beneath them can be just as vital for survival, even when it’s not necessarily their own.
jounouchi and kaiba are essentially the most extreme example of two people who want what’s best for each other (gone wrong!) and puppyshipping is appealing because them getting together requires that they stop punishing themselves for who they used to be. they expect too much out of themselves and then inflict those demands onto each other, but if they’re not wrong for the ways they’ve overcome the circumstances they were left in, then it’s equally true that the ideals they abandoned to survive weren’t inherently naïve just because they weren’t given the space to utilize them. sometimes life will push you to your limits in the hope that you fail, and there’s no deeper meaning to it. it’s not life’s way of teaching you a necessary lesson to make you stronger or a test to see if you deserve to live, or that it’s your fault when it breaks you. sometimes there’s no great meaning to suffering. things happen, and you will adjust to it in order to live. when kaiba and jounouchi believe they know each other as much as they know themselves, pairing them is the hope that they’ll respect themselves enough to respect each other, that they’ll one day be able to embrace the parts of themselves they’re the most ashamed of.
(or, you know, for the alternative crowd, they most definitely can make each other worse.)
for two men who claim to be so self-assured in their own lifestyles, jounouchi and kaiba are fascinating because there’s so many layers of denial at play: the denial that they see anything in each other, denial that there may be aspects of the other that they’ve come to envy, denial that they even care, and it's so tempting to imagine if all of it was forced open. jounouchi and kaiba choose to maintain this delicate equilibrium where they never actually confront anything because the idea of admitting vulnerability viscerally disgusts them, and it begs what would happen if the balance irrevocably tipped for once. watching them is like watching a pencil teetering on the edge of a desk, always this close to some kind of breakthrough. i won’t even lie to you puppyshipping pisses me off half the time because i just want to shake them around until something metaphorically breaks.
kaiba and jounouchi never let each other become complacent in their pasts: whenever their personal tragedies and childhoods are brought up in the context of one another, it’s never because they are being vindicated for continuing to dwell in them, but because they are being contested on how much the mindsets they’ve carried over from their pasts should be allowed to determine their futures.
returning to canon, kaijou operates through the language of competition. jounouchi tries to prove himself as a competitor so remarkable that kaiba can no longer deny him, while kaiba already knows he’s remarkable, and that is precisely why acknowledging it pisses him off so much. so they’ll play their game: jounouchi will provoke kaiba into fighting him because he enjoys going up against challenging opponents in the hopes of becoming stronger, whereas kaiba keeps trying to set up situations where jounouchi will lose to the point of letting him die because he wants so badly to believe that losing does equal death and jounouchi’s existence is the most inconvenient counterargument of all. and obviously, jounouchi keeps not dying. and it's endlessly infuriating—almost slapstick at this point, that much to kaiba's frustration, no matter what he does, he can never make jounouchi submit for very long.
jounouchi and kaiba spur each other on to a ridiculous extent: kaiba enjoys pushing jounouchi past the breaking point, whereas jounouchi enjoys getting pushed to his limits to test his own capabilities. whether that’s necessarily a good thing though is…well…hmm. anyways.
their dynamic is the type of messiness only two prideful high schoolers can get up to. maybe it’s just kaiba's repression and jounouchi's recklessness, but there is a fascination with each other that they’re incapable of leaving alone. there’s intimacy in knowing someone so well and fearing that fact, but kaiba and jounouchi never respond to this fear by avoiding it—they’re engaging with it time and time again. they infuriate each other with a passion that never sits still. kaiba and jounouchi seek a validation from their counterpart while simultaneously denying each other from it, and it’s mean, but invigoratingly so.
at some point, it’s not even about wanting validation anymore, but point-blank wanting its keeper by any capacity: wanting a visible reaction to their effort as proof of reciprocation, proof that says “i’ve finally affected you just as much as you affect me.” because kaiba and jounouchi want to leave a mark on each other, they want their counterpart to fully understand how much they’ve affected them, and they want to witness that reaction themselves. it’s no longer this big, nebulous ideological debate with a reflection: the pull between them is made both physical and personal. so, like, not to go the trite route of arguing that two men who can’t stand each other were ~secretly attracted to each other this whole time~, but how else are you supposed to word this?
in some hypothetical universe where they do come together, even the ways they love manage to compliment each other in its own clumsy way. seto kaiba never does anything in moderation: if he hates something he will destroy it, if he loves something he will possess it, and if he is obsessed with something, he will single-mindedly pursue it at the expense of everything else. his repression manifests itself in a passion so pressurized it’s all-consuming against everything it comes to contact with. inversely, katsuya jounouchi loves freely and transparently: showing affection comes as naturally as breathing to him. he embodies the belief that love is not only about the grand gestures, but the day-to-day acts of warmth and casual acknowledgments that it's there. a man who wants to be wanted by someone so badly it aches paired with someone who makes no reservations as to what he's committed to, capable of a love so overwhelmingly insatiable that it is neither fickle nor delicate, and a man who finds the act of trusting others with his affection so unthinkably humiliating that he’s convinced himself it’s something beneath him paired with someone who makes it look infuriatingly easy. they are going to invent a new language to love each other with. i believe in them. i would not write two separate essays titled “here’s how puppyshipping can still win” if i did not believe in them.
ultimately, it feels cheap to build kaiba and jounouchi’s relationship off what life lessons they could "teach" each other reformation-style when they already have a legitimate dynamic in play. they can be good for each other, or they can tear into each other in ways they’d never expect to be capable of. there’s something exhilarating in knowing there’s someone who has that kind of power and wanting to keep them within your reach, a buzzing excitement in knowing someone who can not only withstand you at your worst, but fight back at you with twice as much vigor. sure, there’s potential for growth here, but that’s because there’s potential for literally anything.
kaiba and jounouchi inspire reinvention and self-determination from each other at the best of times and enable each other’s most self-destructive tendencies at their worst. so i think. puppyshipping is the most fun. when you ship them the same way you leave a fork in the microwave to watch it explode. the end.
Tumblr media
TL;DR: me x the guy who keeps breaking my worldview and forces me to reevaluate myself every time i see him which i hate so much that i just want him to DIE

“Jounouchi, what the hell are you doing?!”
“I should be the one asking that! You promised me that if I joined your gang you wouldn’t lay a hand on my friends!”
“I knew it! Jounouchi did it for us!”
“Give me back my friend! No, that’s not all... For laying a hand on my friend, I’ll take you down!”

Yugioh Season Zero: The Yo-Yo Crimes of Jounouchi Pt 1
It’s been a while since I visited the many times Yugi should have gone to jail, AKA season Zero, and I’m excited to visit it again.
If you just got here, this is Season Zero, which is very different vibe and a different direction plotwise than the other seasons and you can read the season zero recaps from the start in chrono order here: https://steve0discusses.tumblr.com/tagged/yuugi%20muto/chrono
So be warned, this is a 90′s anime, and it will do 90′s anime things, and I expect y’all reading this aren’t like 12.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I said in an earlier post, I wrote this out fully when I was going through the symptoms from my second dose--which PS, is worth it--but those symptoms knocked me out for 10 days. I was kind of a space cadet, and yo, I made some mistakes. Including writing this post out in full and then not clicking “save” on this post and then not realizing I had done that until several days later.
So long story short, I don’t remember what I originally wrote here, but lets all assume it was weird, and didn’t make sense and wasn’t funny. We’ll just assume this was for the best that it was deleted forever.
So this episode is about 2 things: Yo-yos and Jounouchi. Both get used as a tool for violence, and both need to get just a little bit cursed by Yugi to scale it the hell back. So, understandably, we start off this episode with Jounouchi, who has eagerly identified with this off brand yo-yo he apparently got out of a dumpster for being just a huge ass defect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(more Yo-Yo crimes under the cut)
Tumblr media
I see you dodging copyright infringement, Yugioh. Eireboy.
Also whenever I read “Eireboy” I do it in my mind in the same pacing and vocal tones that Pegasus uses to say “Kaiba boy.” Something about it’s conjunction to Yugioh, I see anything with “boy” at the end of it, and it’s voiced by a weird guy with one eye.
Tumblr media
So I wrote these caps under the influence of my second dose, just assuming y’all understand the life I lived, but I realized writing this episode...traveling bands of yo-yo performers that go to your school and shill yo-yos with yo-yo shows in the hopes that it will get you so obsessed with yo-yos that you will not join a gang and do drugs and have sex may be just an American thing.
So when I saw a yo-yo episode I was like “Tight! Clearly, the yo-yo clowns have come to town!” and I assumed everyone in this class would be draped in yo-yos, because I just assumed that at some point at School you will get MAD OBSESSED with yo-yos for about 2 weeks.
But in this episode, everyone was like “Jounouchi, why are you playing with a random yo-yo?” and it didn’t occur to me until typing this out just now: only Jounouchi is doing this. He did this unprompted, without the encouragement of a bunch of middle aged performers doing tricks to techno music.
So instead, I have to think of Jounouchi as Ralphie in this scenario, and he just got a official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time for Christmas, but he’s gonna shoot his eye out.
Because yo-yos in this episode are basically guns.
...Kind of like a duel deck was also just a gun...
...or the wands in Harry Potter...
...which honestly...I’ve probably said this before but where I’m from, we just use straight up guns in these elaborate analogies because we freakin have to make the point crystal clear. The moment Ralphie finally got his hands on a bb-gun, he very nearly shot his eye out and broke his glasses. And that scene will haunt me until my dying day...
...but fine, we can use yo-yos, I guess it works, although to me, yo-yo’s are just teachers hoping you’ll become such a dork that no gang will accept you (and then in this universe, it does the opposite? So freakin weird).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The beginning of this episode is Jounouchi trying do his best to impress with his skills, but in actuality, getting very close to clubbing Anzu with a yo-yo. And, while Anzu is the strongest person in Yugioh in the later seasons, I feel like Season Zero Anzu is another level. It’s a serious tempt of fate that Jounouchi is doing, so Honda wisely cuts him off from doing any more of that so she won’t end up strangling yet another person in broad daylight in the middle of school.
Tumblr media
Remember your yo-yo safety, children.
Straight up, Honda’s version of yo-yo safety is to just Never Use a Yo-Yo and that’s the most gun safety thing ever that they’ve slipped into this Yugioh Episode. I almost expected Yuugi to pull a “well, actually, I use a hunting yo-yo to get enough venison to feed my family.” But youknow, he lives in a city, so while Yugioh is pretty weird and Yuugi has to worry about a lot of things--he doesn’t have to worry about that.
Tumblr media
This is actually foreshadowing, which I only realized in hind sight, mostly because I just can’t associate a Yo-yo with crime. Joey knowing how to use a yo-yo was foreshadowing that he was absolutely part of this gang in a past life.
Yeah that one went completely over my head the first time and the second time and it really wasn’t until just now that I finally caught it. Hoo boy, sometimes I wonder why y’all let me analyze this show.
Tumblr media
Jounouchi decides to confront the yo-yo bandits and everyone else is like “Silly Jounouchi, he’s not gonna do that. That would be stupid.” And...in S0, they don’t know him well enough yet to know that he really is that much of a well meaning dumbass.
Tumblr media
I think a S1-5 Yugi would have been sprinting out the door to keep Joey from killing himself (again), but Season Zero Yuugi had hope that Jounouchi would just naturally tucker out and fall asleep or something.
And he was so wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anzu’s “New Tricks” line was from the dub itself and man that’s a good line. I love Anzu’s sass in Zero.
Tumblr media
So, Honda decides to help them find Jounouchi so all of them together could give Jounouchi an intervention for skipping school. This is the same Honda that once skipped school to babysit a tomagachi and said it was because of “Maternity leave,” but don’t worry about the hypocrisy, because from this episode we learned that Jounouchi needs a very short leash.
Tumblr media
So this episode is a great Jounouchi episode to explain stuff that still hasn’t been explained in 5 seasons of Yugioh. In S1-5, we don’t get much about his home life other than his Mom left and his Sister lives far away and is like sickly as hell. We know nothing else. But this is the episode where we finally get to find out why Yuugi and his Grandfather decided to basically adopt him from S1 onward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yugioh is tackling some pretty heavy territory, but I respect the show for not trying to magically change Jounouchi’s parents like they did to Dartz. Instead, the crew decide to reach out and try to find their friend who clearly didn’t go home last night (and won’t be going back for a while), by checking every alleyway in Domino.
Fun fact Yuugi drops this episode, Domino is one of the biggest cities on Earth. This makes the Battle City Tournament even more crazy when you realize Kaiba shut down several blocks but, it also makes a tiny bit more sense how we have so many Millennium items in one place. (Yet...it still doesn’t explain Bakura and Joey’s accent.) And, I guess if your city is just extra large, you get an extra large warehouse district, too.
Speaking of, they eventually find Jounouchi at his new (but also old) crime antics mugging some random stranger next to this Game store that I just realized was cropped so it looks like it says “GANG.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Say hello to our crime clown. He’s sort of like a discount joker, and that beanie is...man it is green.
I forget this green exists sometimes, but Season Zero has it as one of their prime colors. Good ol’ Retro Kaiba green.
I’m a little tempted to swatch Season Zero a bit and figure out their full color scheme--it’s really saturated, which is interesting when you compare it to the later seasons which are a lot more muted since...the 00′s were like that, they greyed a lot of colors out. But I’ll do it later if I do, maybe another post for another day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jounouchi and Honda, before they moved to the school with Yuugi in it, used to go to the same school and up until now I just assumed they were close friends. But apparently they were a lot more distant than that. I’m sure they met up several times as Jounouchi destroyed stuff and Honda came along in his volunteer janitor outfit to put the stuff the hell back, and maybe that’s how they got to know eachother better?
But basically, Jounouchi was the freakin worst, and Jounouchi’s best friend was Hirotani--this 45 year old 15 year old with the blue pony and turquoise fade--and Honda has SO MUCH hot goss to say about it.
I really get the gist that Honda may not have liked anyone else at his old school, like at all. Like maybe Honda likes cleaning up trash so much because his school was just trash top to bottom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As is tradition, Yuugi got his tar beat in by Hirotani. Another concussion to add to his list of issues to tell his future therapist that lives in that puzzle he wears around his neck.
Tumblr media
I still expect him to do a double cross, but it seems they wanted to keep it a relatable and more realistic fall-out, where Jounouchi has just bounced on them without even a goodbye. He and his Dad had a bad fight, and Jounouchi was like “well so long to all of this and everyone that has anything to do with it.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In later seasons, Joey is the one trying to save other people. He’s saving his Sister, he’s saving Mai, he’s saving Yugi, but in this season Jounouchi’s friends had to save Jounouchi from himself a few times now.
I like this depth to his character, I’ll be honest. I can understand why S1-5 don’t touch on it, and I don’t think it’s because they didn’t want to have an abusive Dad storyline, because they did that several times over with Seto Kaiba (man the Dad situation in Yugioh is DIRE.) Instead they probably just felt like Season Zero already did it, so why do it again?
It’s just a shame that it wasn’t talked about in the other seasons. Joey makes a lot more sense to me now because we get to see why Jounouchi is so hard set on saving people. S4 Mai Valentine, who ditched everyone and joined a gang? That’s basically a Joey move, and that was why Joey Wheeler was all over that.
Really would have added a lot to that particular arc if the show...actually talked about Joey’s history at all rather than assume I would have watched something that was never released in the States. Instead...it just looked a lot like he had only romantic motivations, which may not have been what they were going for.
Speaking of romantic, check out this sunset. Like the sun is exploding for some reason--just a wild sunset you only see for a still frame before a commercial break.
Tumblr media
As Joey, youknow, takes on an entire rival gang single-handedly.
Hey guys, I lived near a pretty big city most of my life and I have been on a roof...once. Just the one time when I was doing an internship in SF with a painter and we needed to take a reference photo of his painting for a gallery (and it was hella sketch, and we weren’t exactly allowed up there). Who are all these people giving teens Roof Access? It’s so hard to get! Even if you live in an apartment of a tall building, I can count on zero of my fingers the amount of times I was allowed on that roof. But TV shows and movies--they freakin love roof gardens and roof hangouts and roof fights.
Am I missing out?? How did y’all get on the ROOF? I know I’m on S5 of Yugioh now and I have seen a lot of roof stuff, but like...is this normal for everyone else? I know there’s schools that have roof sport--that’s common in the city everywhere--but that’s like...specialized roofs with 30 ft chainlink fencing and really good supports to your body doesn’t fall straight through it when you jump too much. The hell is using their normal ass roof?
This gang should have their legs swinging halfway into the floor below them, is all I’m saying, if my roof couldn’t handle our solar heating, then a normal ass roof cannot support a gang fight.
But it does look really, really cool.
Anyway, Anzu does some offscreen snooping and finds out where the crime hangs out, and suggests that we step right into crime zone and just yank Jounouchi out of there. Which is something you would only do and say if you were Anzu and cannot fear death.
Tumblr media
If it were Jay’s it would be with an ‘s. That’s how you do a plural Jay. But it’s the 90′s, so we put a “z” on the end of everything that should have been an “s” and that’s how you get the...
I mean, thank you, dubbers, for not saying “Jizz” but for reals...that be Jizz.
Please don’t flag me, Tumblr. (which, PS, I think they turned off the flagbot, Tumblr hasn’t flagged me in forever and I’m so thankful. Mods are asleep, we can talk about anime again)
Tumblr media
So even though Honda decided that he was fed up with Jounouchi and didn’t want to save his ass, he decided to give it another go but complete with some new sash. He also did this without telling any of the others, who just kinda spectated him for a little while.
Honestly, if they weren’t laughing at him, I wouldn’t have known that this sash was any weirder than any of his other sashes. I don’t know really know what a school uniform should look like. It’s a shame, I feel like this series has a lot of jokes and puns probably soaring right over my head.
Tumblr media
A little bit embarrased he was caught being vulnerable, Honda decides to give us a little more context to why he ever decided to give Jounouchi the time of day in the first place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They had PE class once, and Honda apparently loves the hell out of PE. Jounouchi ran really fast in a straight line that one time, and that is why he’s trustworthy friend material. He just needs to stop joining gangs, and he’ll be solid.
Tumblr media
I have no idea if the fandub put that in there or if that was native to the show, but Miho legit stans Honda/Jounouchi and acts as if she’s off to write some fanfiction about it. Honestly if she did, it would make her so much more interesting of a character.
Tumblr media
And so, until next time, we shall have to wait and see exactly what Yami Yuugi is going to do with a freakin Yo-yo and I’m sure it’s all sorts of real effed up. Excited to get there, honestly. A shame it had to happen on the part that isn’t dubbed yet, but I’ve done these subbed before, it’ll be fine!

27) Who orders take out at two in a morning? and who wakes the other up at three in the morning to go downstairs with them to get a glass of water because it’s too dark?
JOUNOUCHI HHHHH
Jou always has weird sleeping patterns, sometimes he’s a night owl, sometimes he’s sleep-early-wake-early. When he’s still awake at 2 AM, he would totally order something HHHH Because he’s bored and hungry but doesn’t want to cook and doesn’t want to wake Yugi up to cook for him (Yugi mostly does the cooking, even tho his skills are mostly average because Jou Can’t Cook to save his life. Shizuka has tried to teach him how to cook so at least Jou knows how to make plain sunny side-up eggs HHH).
And Jou is THE SCAREDY CAT, honestly he CAN’T enjoy horror no matter how many times he tried, even tho he’s literally friends with Atem who was technically a ghost HHHH But Jou just don’t want to admit he’s scared so when the gang (most likely Ryou) suggested a horror movie night, he would join (all the while he’s clinging to Yugi throughout the film tho HHHH PLS SAVE HIM). After that Jou would honestly be too scared of the dark even in his own home, he clings to Yugi even as they fall asleep, and of course once he woke up to get a glass of water, he peered outside their room to look at the empty, dark hallway. He could just easily click the switch to get some light but he’s already getting nausea and so he just rushed in and gently shook Yugi awake HHHHH
But if he didn’t watch or engaged in any horror things before on that day, he’d be OK to get the water alone.

Thanks for the ask!!

LETS TALK ABOUT VERSES
Verses: (Alphabetical order)
A Place In This World Verse: Jou’s babu years to just before he joined a gang
Number One Verse: Bleach verse lmao
Did It To Myself Verse: UNKNOWN FASJLDFKADS J
Everybody’s Lonely Verse: Jou’s alone in the world and questioning himself and every relationship he’s had. He figures he’s better off alone and everyone’s fine without him so after a vacation he decides to disappear for good. Leaving no trace or evidence that he’d been there at all, like he’s been erased from existence altogether.
Every Heart Verse: InuYasha Au
Fly away Verse: Breath of the wild Au
Hiding In Your Hands Verse: (Main Verse): Jounouchi Katsuya is a part snow leopard due to unfortunate circumstances in his childhood. The rest is history however. ..... Yet, while the Duel monsters world is safe, the real world is not. Jou takes it upon himself to make sure that gang activity doesn’t skyrocket and take down those he sees as a threat to the population. He also adopts four children, Pit, Dark Pit, Jaden and Nimue. Finds a brother in Sora and a sister in Elsa and Anna. His life is weird but its his.
Icarus Verse: Jou works for Kaibacorp for shits and giggles and messes with Seto. He thinks they’re friends while Seto is trying to get used to this. (Exclusive Kaibacorpbros verse)
Killing Time Verse: Literally just crossover verses lmao
Leave Out All The Rest Verse: Oops, Jou fell too deep into his gang life again, he becomes a gang leader and eventually dies from it. He’s shown that he does have loved ones that love him back. The spirit that helps him lets him turn back the clock and fix whatever mistake he made. Endless loop until he figures out what he did wrong and how to fix it.
Loser Baby Verse: Everything from  the original deleted blog falls into this verse unless stated otherwise.
Mr Sandman Man Me A Sand Verse: Absolute crack/chaos
Never Get Used To People Verse: Insane Jou au????? Maybe??????
Ready Steady Go! Verse: Fullmetal Alchemist Au (Will eventually be fleshed out when I figure out wtf is going on)
See Me Through Verse: Kingdom Hearts Au taking place in canon. Between the regular villain of the month episodes, Jou’s fighting his own monsters. Literally! Set with his keyblade Starset, he tries
Thank You, Next Verse: He fully comes into himself in this au and quits the gang life for good. He goes to college and goes into car manufacturing business.
Who is In Control? Verse: Jou never leaves his gang leader position, never makes friends with Yugi or Tristan and eventually becomes a bigger problem than Hirotani. No one’s sure who is worse, their previous leader or their current one. The blonds tendency to get himself into danger more often than not nearly get him killed on a regular basis. And he’s starting to realize he doesn’t care if he does.

I dunno, I was thinking that they’re all trapped on a spaceship for the MST3K AU, presumably Kaiba having some non-Yugi-gang related reason to be there (maybe it’s a sci-fi AU and Mokuba wanted to go visit some planet and they took the same ship as the Yugi gang, only for something to go wrong leaving them indefinitely stuck in space until the ship’s fixed), and eventually he joins in on the riffing because he has nothing better to do. But then after a really bad instance of him and Jounouchi fighting, there’s an unofficial rule that they are not to be riffing on a movie/be in the same room at the same time.
I think Mokuba could make a surprisingly good riffer, especially if we use dub elements of the characters’ personalities.
Listen, I love this,

The anime improved her character
Tumblr media
Now I want to clarify something before I start.
I know the Yu-Gi-Oh! fandom is heavy on the shipping, so I want to ask that most of you readers who are shippers to please put to that to the side for a moment. I’m not attacking any of your ships. I’m not saying they are inherently bad. Nor am I trying to put any shade on them. I’m solely focusing on the character as a whole.
I also understand that Anzu/Tea’s character is also a touchy subject considering the fandom’s mixed feelings about her. So I also want to ask to read this with an open mind. I’m not trying to change anyone’s perspective of her. I’m not trying to make you like her if you don’t. Or hate her if you do like her. I’m talking about my own opinion about her and what I felt about her. And you’re more than free to disagree with me, just like I have a right to talk about what I feel about her as well.
With that said here are my thoughts...
There’s one more thing I want to clarify before we start.
I will be addressing Anzu’s character in three perspectives.
You have her manga counterpart.
Her Japanese anime counterpart
And her 4kids version.
I will not be including her game counterparts by Konami. Nor will I talk about her movies versions either. Because Pyramid of Light isn’t essentially part of the main story as a whole.  And Dark side of Dimensions takes place after all the main Yu-Gi-Oh! events. And while yes the movie does take place in the manga universe. It’s still many years after the release of the books.
Now… with that said let’s officially start.
As someone whose been both watching the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and reading the manga there’s a number of things I’ve seen be changed in both versions. Besides the larger obvious changes, (such as duels, plot points, etc.) there were some smaller ones that I noticed when I reread the manga.
And thus we get to Anzu’s character as a whole.
And as the picture says.
Anzu’s manga incarnation is my least favorite of the three versions.
Now, I really do like Anzu as a character. I don’t hate her. But I’m not going to lie that I used to be one of those people who would bash on her simply because she existed. But looking back on that I found just how unfair and bias that was.  Then I got to take a closer look at her character and I found, that her manga incarnation (to me) has to be her worst version mostly because of how she behaves in it.
Now no hate to Kazuki Takahashi, but Ima be frank, the only female character that I thought was well-written was Mai, and Ishizu to an extent. The rest… well could use some work. More particularly Anzu, now I do understand considering the manga was first published in 1996. In a time where women’s roles were a bit different then how it is today.
I’m no expert on Japanese customs, and how women are and were treated. But I do know there is a difference in Japanese culture and Western culture. Especially with woman empowerment in the recent years.
Now beyond that small detail, I already came clean that manga!Anzu wasn’t exactly a favorite. I’m not saying she was all that bad, as she clearly has her good points but I think what made her bland and off-setting is how she reacts to certain situations.
Warning: I’m heading into romantic territory.
I think more of less her crush on Yami Yugi/Atem. More specifically during the time they went to the water park. What seriously made me ticked off about Anzu was that she intentionally put herself in danger in order to see “cool other Yugi” in action.
And that’s one thing that bothered me a lot. Because the reason she even got a crush on Atem is mostly because he saved her from being shot. Which isn’t inherently bad. But you think she could be more concerned about the fact that the guy died. By being lit. On. Fire.
Who had been sitting right next to her I might add.
Granted she was blind folded, but you think that a person who bets her life wouldn’t be playing games by using fingers. (Granted Atem’s intelligence is off the charts when it comes to playing games). She should be scared shitless of the “mysterious” person and for her life. But still she falls in love with a stranger who DIRECTLY caused a criminal to be lit the guy on fire. I can understand that she falls in love with him because he saved her life. But if setting up a trap so a person can be lit on fire willingly doesn’t scream a manipulative psychopath, then I don’t know what to call them then.
Now going away from that fact, I think another thing that really bothered me is just how distinctly she cares little for everything else when dealing with Atem and her not so secret crush on him. And that would always involve little-miss-friendship one way or another to cast Yugi aside, just so she can spend some time with Atem. And to me that was just irksome. (So much for being childhood friends)
Something else that tends to grind my gears has to be the fact that she always, somehow is the victim of being captured and being used as a ransom or cause troubles for the whole gang. (Not to say that the anime hasn’t done this, it’s just not as much as it was in the manga).
Though, I won’t deny it must suck being the only girl. Especially during that “don’t make a sound” trial in the Death-T arc.
Now the reason why I prefer her anime counterparts compared to her manga version, is mostly because they were able to add more to her character beyond the basics. As well as tone down some of her negatives to something that sounds realistic and what a normal teenage girl could have.
Now I’m not saying that her anime version hasnt done wrongs. As at times she would get frustrated over nothing. And her jealousy rivalry with Rebecca can get out of hand and just straight out made for the basis of comedy. But to me that’s still miles better than her manga counterpart (especially in the earlier works).
But if I had to be honest, I think her Season 0 counterpart, as well as her 4kids version were my favorite incarnations of her.
Yes, even her 4kids version. Friendship jokes aside they able to give her a less annoying personality. (And the fact that they got a voice actor that didn’t try to sound like a stereotype cute anime school girl) And whether you like Tea/Anzu or not, she does have a spunky personality, which is a lot more evident in both Season 0 and her 4kids counterpart. This gal is the embodiment of friendship goals!
She’s a friend who will always have your back and is willing to go through thick and thin. Not to mention if you’re feeling down she will try to find a way to lift your spirits. If not listen to your problems and comfort you.
Say what you want, but if she were real. I would like to have her as a best friend. And just in general, going back to her Season 0 counterpart, (as many consider to be her best version) and quite frankly I agree, and I think what made her such a good character in it, is that some of Anzu’s lesser great moments were given to Miho. Who has a cute and scatterbrain personality, not only did it give Miho personality, she was usually enjoyable to see on screen. Sometimes she was annoying, but not to the point were it was overbearing. And it meshed pretty well with those faults and still make her joy to watch on screen. Because of this we got to focus on more of Anzu’s stronger traits, and be a supporting independent character. For instance, the chono-sensei episode, where Anzu stood up for a class mate because her love letter was going to be revealed to the whole class as punishment.
Or starting a petitions to give students a chance to get a job while they’re in school. Or the fortune teller scene, where she reveals that she doesn’t believe in fortune telling and that she can shape her own future because she makes it happen by her choices and will.
I think more or less I think some of my more favorite changes has to be these two scenes.
Like this one:
Tumblr media
changing to this:
Tumblr media
These two are from the Season 0 and first manga volumes. The differences being instead of Anzu being the turned into a toy first, it’s Miho and later on Anzu joins, but out of her free will to fight along side her friends.
...
Then there’s this one, it changes from:
Tumblr media
To this:
Tumblr media
The second comparison is from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist vol. Where she’s being controlled by Marik and would be forced to swallow a poisoned capsule if Yugi doesn’t duel a controlled Jounouchi/Joey
And the second one being that she’s strapped down to a chair and instead of being poisoned she will instead be crushed under a large metal crate. This allows Marik to release his control on her, since she’s locked. Which then allows her to watch the duel.
Being free of Marik’s control she’s able to tell Kaiba and Mokuba this:
Tumblr media
And to me that makes a huge difference because it shows how much of strong and caring character she is. She’s willing to die for her friends so that they don’t have to.
(Though to be fair in the original manga she probably would do the same if she was in control). But I think that small change grow and expands her character even more.
And to me, I simply just prefer her anime counterpart in comparison to her manga version. I sincerely believe that both animes fixed what made her a bit intolerable in the manga. At least to me that’s what I feel
Feel free to disagree, but I’m sticking firm to mine.

Swap life AU project
//First, this project is really important for me. It’s been now 1 year I think?- that I think about it, develop it. I will not give all the information because I’m kinda paranoiac sometimes.
Anyway, the base is simply a swap life AU, but between my OC and Seto. And I can tell you. It’s a hell of a journey.
Seto Nakajima
His parents and his little brother was killed by a mad cultist. The rest of his family abandoned him, putting him in a psychiatric institute, then an orphanage. He was never adopted.
To survive, he learned to fight, to steal. He joined a gang when he was young. Now he is the leader of this gang, The Blue Dragons. It’s his main activity.
He is far more open than regular verse, smiles, laughs, flirts a lot.
The best part of this AU: He grew up with Jounouchi. He is his best friend and lives in the same apartment.
The other characters don’t know him, not really
He is a great dancer. He still plays duel monsters but in the Underground
He smokes, uses weed and cocaine.
He totally killed more than once.
Kathleen Kaiba
After the death of her parents, Kat and her little brother, Hiro, was adopted by Gozaburo Kaiba.
All the canon events are the same, but Seto is replaced by Kat. Nothing important really changed. Even what happened in Ancient Egypt. Seth is Kathleen past life.
If you are interested in this AU, contact me so I can give you more headcanons. If some of you are interested, I will make a side blogs for that AU.

History:
- Sharing the same passion for robotics, Kat’s parents met at an IEEE International Conference on R&A (Robotics and Automation) in Atlanta. Her dad, Hideyoshi, a young AI genius with a fragile health that had left him lame, was from an old Japanese family with some Russian ancestry, the Murata’s, who were not really into honest business. But his talent and original organic approach to programming led him to another path: Founding his own robotics company.
Her mother, Erika, a strong Swedish woman, that gave Kat almost all of her genetics, left her country and family to study and work in America. She had always loved to tinker but the creation of prosthetics and robots fascinated her.
Their meeting was a surprise, but they quickly became attached to one another and when he asked her to follow him to Japan, at Domino city, to accomplish his project, she accepted. With each of their specialties, they created Murata Robotics with the help of an American friend, Stuart Evans. After some time they had two children, Kathleen and Hiro.
- Kat was a cheerful little girl, with curly blonde hair, always smiling and curious, even if she was a little too much naive. At 8 she was already interested in her dad’s work. He dedicated his secret project to her: creating a fully functional animal AI, based on what a dragon could be.
- Their lives turned upside down the day where Kat met a strange man in a convenience store. He talked with the 8-years-old girl a few minutes but disappeared before Erika had seen him. The night after, Kat woke up, upon hearing the sounds of a struggle. Before she could react the same man entered her room and captured her. She doesn’t remember everything from this night but some details are still clear today. Her family sitting in front of her. Her father telling her to look into his eyes as her mother’s blood spilled on the floor. Her brother’s cries. Their slit throats.
After that everything went quickly. He took her with him, locked her up in a cave, left her screaming in the dark, with only rats for company. When she finally fell silent and he was sure that she was broken and weak, he brought her into a room decorated with dozens of candles. It didn’t take her long to lose consciousness when he started engraving the summoning circles on her back with a ritual knife.
What was supposed to be a sacrificial ritual to bring a monster into this world, Xeras, the dragons slaver, trapped him in the body of this little girl. And it was furious. Using Kat’s physical and emotional pain, it merged their soul, releasing their wrath on the man who did all that. When the police arrived, they found her unconscious with the dead body of her kidnapper. They decided to close the case.
- After a stay in the hospital to take care of her wounds, which left her with scars, they took her to an orphanage, waiting for the family of her dad to come to get her. But under the influence of the monster inside her, she quickly became violent, hurting herself and the other kids. Her family, that only wanted the control of Murata robotics, put her in the Institute, a psychiatric hospital for children, for ‘her own good’. She was soon diagnosticated as having a borderline personality disorder and PTSD and was placed in isolation, under medication. The monster finally calmed down, too weak to take control anymore.
- Two years later a psychiatrist finally decided to give more effort toward her recovery. After some work, he declared her well enough to go, but not without supervision. Her family was powerful and didn’t want her to take back her inheritance one day. They made efforts to bribe for a ruling of ineptitude, claiming she was not able to care for herself, even into adulthood.
Of course, they never took custody of her, and she was placed in an orphanage, and then in a foster family until her 18th birthday.
- Being mostly free to go outside, she quickly mixed with the wrong crowd. Understanding that she was on her own and nobody would help her, she came closer to the only kind of people that would accept her, other outcasts, delinquents, gangs.
At 17, she fell for a 24 years old gang leader, Esteban. She tried to join his group, but he laughed at her. Why would he take her? She knew how to fight in the schoolyard but she was weak. He threatened her to take her as a prostitute, but he finally let her go. He liked her gaze.
- Strangely, dance had been her salvation. She met a dance teacher that taught her to have control of her body and to be confident. She began to workout as well, she built up a fair amount of muscles for a girl of her age. When she went back to Esteban, he finally accepted. He saw potential in her but he also wanted her. Even if she was still young, she was crazy about him. Her relationship with him defined all the ones she had after. If anybody tried to say that she was only a prostitute, they would feel her wrath.
But she didn’t totally agree with how Esteban was leading his gang. And by that time, her ambition was more important than the feelings she had.
- At 20, she began to search for supporters within the gang and when she had enough support on her side, she led an attack on Esteban and the rest of the gang. After a knife fight that she won with difficulties (winning a scar on her abdomen), she had to choose what she would do with Esteban. He was already condemned. She could let him live with the shame that he lost his power against a woman, or she could kill him. But she knew him. He was psycho, a killer. But strangely enough, he loved her. In his own way. So she offered him to be her second in command. He accepted. After all, it was his only way to stay with her and keep some power.
- She changed the name of the gang, calling them Kiiro no Ryū, the yellow dragons but also changed their activities. Her goal was now to protect the people of the districts they controlled. Their main incomes were the attacks of other gangs, everything linked to the underground Duel Monster traffic (rare cards, illegal tournaments,…), but also drugs traffic and prostitution. Most of the gang’s members are loyal and receive a share of the profits. Kat mostly refuses to use that money, even if it could have given her a good life.
- During this time, Kat continued her scholar life without interest, being at Rintama High School and had to repeat a year. But she saw something that motivated her. She remembered that kid she saw on TV when she was at the Institut, that was adopted by the richest man in Domino. And now she was seeing him on TV again, CEO of his company. It impressed her. It made her realize that she could do it too. That even with a bad start she doesn’t have to stay in the underground. And maybe take back her parent’s company. After that, she began to studies seriously to graduate from high school with a scholarship for the American University of Domino City. She chose to study Business Economics, making Kaiba Corp her main subject.
- Being good at dueling she decided too to start a more official career, as the Dragon Warrior. So far she managed to win her duel disk, and participate in some tournaments, with some good results.
- But when everybody seemed to go better, the worst happened. Strong of years of wait, Xeras took advantage of a moment of weakness to take full control of Kat’s body. She only managed to be back in control thank to her friend Isabel, after a long and harsh combat. The discovery of her possession was a shock, it meant that all those bad things that happened to her, the Institute, all the violent events that she couldn’t remember, all this was because of him. It took her time to accept that, but after all, he was stuck in her body and they can’t do anything about it.
This part is valid for the default verse with @upbeatsunshine. If your muse is Jou, Kat doesn’t know him. If you still want to use this headcanons, send me  an IM/ask :) :
- She met him when she was 13 and him 10, and he became her first and best friend. They tried to learn together how to survive in their neighborhood.
- Once Jou was 18 he went to live in the same apartment than her, using one of the bedrooms.
Facts:
- She has great difficulties making friends, she’s very awkward socially speaking. She still doesn’t know how she made ones.
- She tends to be impulsive and vulgar. But in the presence of people she likes, she’s very energetic and radiant, always ready to laugh.
- She sings very badly and she is unable to play well to a game other than Duel Monster (include video games. Except from Otomes games. She good at it.).
Home: A converted brick building in the old industrial district. The first floor is big garages and her apartment is the half of the second floor. A big living room/kitchen, a bathroom and three rooms.
Family: Hideyoshi Murata (father/deceased), Erika Magnusson (mother/deceased), Hiro Murata (brother/deceased), Adam Sjögren (cousin), her father’s mother and brother (CEO of Murata Robotics)
Friends: Jounouchi Katsuya (@upbeatsunshine), Isabel Corazón, Imnah Hiwatari
Followers: Esteban, her gang members, her dancers.
Pets/Familiars: Doggo, a male golden retriever with a scar on his side and limping a little

The Immortal Pharaoh Chapter 18
You know whatever they have planned, it's a horrible idea.
Jounouchi smirked proudly as he walked into the Kame Game shop. His clothes were disheveled and he looked like he had seen better days but he had found the information he was looking for. It had come at a price. Everything, he knew, came at a certain price, mainly his pride. He didn’t want to think too much on it. This time  required that he not only beg in front of his old gang, on all fours like a dog, but then he’d had to endure being dragged behind a motor bike until the boss felt pleased with his punishment. Grandpa met him at the door. The older man looked him over before pointing to a stool behind the counter, ordering, “Take a seat.” Jounouchi blinked but did so. Grandpa pulled out a first aid kit from one of the nearby cabinets, setting it down on the countertop, before pulling out the things he needed to help clean the boy up. He shook his head, “I thank you for trying to help but you really need to be careful.”
“Ah this is nothing,” he returned. Grandpa probably dabbed the cotton ball onto one of his open scratches harder than he needed to. Jounouchi hissed.
“Still, you need to be careful. What do you think your family would feel if you didn’t come home?”
Jounouchi’s face twisted, “Honestly? My old man wouldn’t care.”
Grandpa huffed, “Fine, then at least think of your friends. Yugi is going to be highly upset to see this.” He motioned up and down at him. Jounouchi scratched his cheek.
“Sure thing Gramps. I’ll get it in mind.” Jounouchi held up a free hand suddenly, greeting the set of footsteps coming from upstairs, “Yo Yug.” Yugi, dressed in a tank top and his leather pants, stopped short on the stair, shook his head, and came forward, frowning. Jounouchi felt himself falter at the pure worry in his eyes.
“What happened,” Yugi demanded.
He scratched his cheek. “It’s nothing. Just a few bumps and scratches.” Jounouchi stood up from the stool, “But I got good news for ya. I got some info on that guy that Malik wanted.
Yugi brightened, gripping both of his arms as he practically shouted, “Does that mean that you know where he’s going?” He nodded.
“I got it figured out.” Jounouchi looked at the nearest wall clock. “And we’re going to have to go quickly. These guys aren’t particularly happy with lateness.
Yugi released him. The same gut twisting worry that had followed him in Egypt returned. If there one thing this who fiasco had taught him, it was to trust his gut. “It still don’t like this,” he said. Jounouchi reached out, rubbing Yugi’s head and the boy grunted, “Hey!”
When Jounouchi released him, Yugi was surprised by the softened expression he found on his face. “Don’t worry,” he promised, “I got a friend who’s said he’d help keep an eye on Malik.” Yugi turned to head towards the stairs. He had to bite back a I hope so as he lead the way to the kitchen area. Jounouchi could easily see the worry sitting behind his eyes but he attempted to hide it by keeping his lips tight and his brow not as knitted. “Hey Yug? Everything’s going to be alright.”
There was a pause. “I trust you,” he said. They came out at the top of the stairs as Yami was coming from one of the side rooms. Yugi froze for a second, dropping his gaze. Yami smiled at the two of them, waving a hand in greeting to Jounouchi who returned it. The blonde didn’t miss Yugi’s expression. He also didn’t miss the way the boy stuttered in greeting him or how he did his best to avoid making eye contact and a sly thought crossed his mind but he kept it to himself for the time being. Malik came out from the bathroom, drying his hair. His face lit up at Jounouchi.
“Yo Jounouchi,” Malik greeted, “You here with good news I hope?” He raised a hand.
“About as good as you can think joining a gang could be.” He wrapped the towel around his neck, nodding.
“Alright. I get my stuff and we can head out.” Yugi’s head snapped up. His eyes were wide and as Malik started to walk by him, Yugi reached out, gently catching his arm. He stopped but didn’t look down.
Yugi licked his lips, “Be careful Malik.” He smiled.
“I’ll keep in touch. Promise.” Yugi let him go. He walked past and into his room to gather his stuff. Yami touched Yugi’s shoulder.  They said nothing but the expressions that passed between them were soft and comforting even if they did nothing to alleviate their fears.
*****
Wandering through the daylight hours without a guide was a bad idea; while Yami had managed to memorize a couple of maps and walkways, he was still overwhelmed by the modern world and took to spending his days more on the Internet, trying to at least build his basic worldly knowledge. When this got boring, he started wandering downstairs in the daylight hours. The game shop was never that busy and on its best days, there was maybe ten customers in the whole place. Grandpa took advantage of the situation. Yami was promptly given an apron and the task of stocking shelves. He even got the chance to help customers on the occasion and it left him smiling when they walked away.
It also gave the two of them a chance to talk.
They were working on a shelf of new games. It was a peaceful and slow afternoon; there were no customers in the store. Yami took a game from Grandpa as he handed them up. Grandpa cleared his throat, “Yami, I have a question for you.” He took another box.
“Yes sir?”
The older man’s face twisted, “Yami, there’s something that’s been bothering me.” He paused. “When this is all over... well, what is going to happen to you?” It was his turn to freeze. What would happen when his mission was over? Had he ever been told?
“I… I don’t know.” Grandpa smiled.
“Do you like this era?” He nodded.
“It’s interesting.” He put the next set of boxes up. “I… yeah, I miss my family and everything but I can’t imagine myself in another time.” Grandpa nodded. He reached up, patting the boy’s arm before moving around him.
“I hope,” he muttered, “that no hearts get broken in the process.”
Yami said nothing but he squeezed his fists. He hoped it was true.

Yugioh Season Zero: Yuugi Gets a Tomagachi Pt 2
So because I spent like...weeks away from Yugioh I recently decided to kinda review what was even going on in this show, and so, as I was quickly going through my own recaps this week while putting this Season Zero episode together, I was reminded about this observation I made so innocently so long ago.
Tumblr media
I keep making jokes with this show and then the jokes end up being real. Like it just keeps happening, so I don’t know why I bother trying to dive so far into the hypothetical thinking “Yugioh would never possibly do this” but...I’ll keep trying.
So, lets see just how dangerous a Season Zero Tomagachi can be. (v bad)
So about 3-4 days have passed since Honda left school for maternity leave despite the fact he is a 14 yo biological male and was never pregnant. I’m glad he’s here to break gender norms and I’m glad that the teacher has just accepted this.
Anzu has decided it’s time for an intervention and thinks, “if I can talk sense into Yuugi occasionally, maybe I can talk some sense into this purple haired alien that we’re also friends with?”
Tumblr media
Miho, I swear.
(read more under the cut)
Yuugi has decided to show off his digital pet, which looks a whole lot like the Olympics mascot from 1996.
Tumblr media
Izzy. That was the name of the Olympics mascot from 1996. I got the stuffed animal of him for my birthday and that’s the only reason I remember this weird ass 90′s fact.
I do not like the weird bangs that are Tomagachi arms, and it says a lot about the volume of Yugi’s bangs that they could have tiny arms attached to all those little bangs and it would...match up.
Now I watched a dubbed version done by English voice actors (hence why I’m getting all these names wrong) and I figured, I may as well take you on the same journey I went through watching this episode, starting with the name of Yuugi’s pet here.
Tumblr media
Some of you, who know every single thing about Yugioh, are right now like “oh girl, do you not even see how you’re getting played all over again? Do you not realize what you JUST walked into?” and don’t worry, we’ll get there. But first, I have to go through this entire episode. Don’t worry, I’ll address the elephant in the room shaped like “the Joshua Tree” but with bangs that are hands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(if you are too young to know about the lore behind U+Me=Us, then please look it up and listen to their entire discography and know that we were so hardcore about U+Me=Us that, for a very little while, they topped TRL over Destiny’s Child and Britney Spears)
Tumblr media
And so they decide to do the very awkward fusion thing where you slap the butts of these Tomagachis together, but Jounouchi’s tomagachi is way too tsundere to date.
Tumblr media
Anyway, in walks this boyman who I think gets bigger and bigger every scene he is in, like Violet Beauregarde. I mean...the door is...only so big. One of y’all brought up in the comments (I think gingerninja) that his name means “whale” in Japanese. Indeed he is.
Tumblr media
He decides to show us his shiny golden pet, and remember this is 1999, so here’s some...1999 technology alright.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear lord, never draw these nips again.
Just...never again.
This is just...
How is this the only post I’ve made in months that hasn’t been flagged?
...Anyways, Kujirada’s monster, instead of going on awkward play dates, just kind of devours whoever he goes up against in a battle. It’s sort of confusing though because like...the same process for battle is the same as for this weird social network/dating scene.
Like there was absolutely no battle system until just now, when this thing started eating other people’s little monsters.
RIP Johnny and Somomo, who we knew for like all of 4 seconds. Truly one of the most devastating blows of Yugioh lore to see the death of these little monster assholes that have consumed all the time that these kids should have spent studying/actually attending school.
Tumblr media
And then, our hero arrives and he’s a freakin mess because he hasn’t slept in 3 days.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I was fully expecting for Honda to also lose and gain a valuable lesson in how to better use his time. I was waiting for Yuugi to pull out his little pet and go through a whole transformation sequence right here and now. But, something impossible happened.
Tumblr media
I can’t believe the episode is already over and it was Honda that won. You heard it here first, kids, always skip school for video games, the Yugioh way.
Tumblr media
I mean...kudos to Honda, I guess. I’m just really surprised he won something. I mean, the last time I saw him play a game he full on died by being tossed into a pit of lava and then he got turned into a robotic monkey for like 12 episodes.
Haiyama, meanwhile, did not take this very well, since he was the one from the bathroom who was being coerced into giving money to Kujirada in order for Kujirada to buy the golden pet, who just lost within a day of buying it.
As Haiyama leaves, we kind of assume that Haiyama is about to get his ass kicked in, because he’s small and cute and wears glasses, and this is Yugioh Season Zero, and those are all the things required to get your ass kicked in.
When just...everything starts to get really, really weird.
Also, this happened,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And FYI whenever I do these Season Zero episodes, I also look into the other translations on Youtube and the one I looked at seems to have also noticed that the Warehouse situation in Yugioh has gotten a little bit out of hand.
Tumblr media
Ah, I see what you did there, random Youtube guy. I mean I love the abandoned warehouse, personally, he’s a core actor in this show. But yes, I do see how it’s turning into a little tiny bit of a meme.
Hilariously, Kujirada makes sure to run directly past Yuugi on his way to the abandoned warehouse district while carrying this girl in a sack over his back.
It is the middle of the freakin day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So you’ve probably guessed the main twist by now, mostly because of the lack of characters, but as Tristan comes to the end of this warehouse, out steps our very large 3 Stooges boy who keels over and is...entirely covered in bloody lashes????
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For your consideration--Haiyama has the yellow glasses and this face type, yes? and Kujirada has the hair? You stick the two together and remove entirely the problematic whipping sequence and you have yourself a
Tumblr media
Of course I say this and maybe Weevil is also in S0 and Haiyama is just his own type of nut.
With a whip for some reason. OMG why does this child have a bullwhip?
Also how on EARTH did he manage to get Miho all the way up there???
Tumblr media
So Haiyama explains, while pulling out a photo album of just tons of people in it, a comically large photo album of people that I guess he just keeps in his butt pocket, that these were all the people who were doing dirty deeds for him in exchange for money. No idea how the hell Haiyama got all that money, but he likes to blow it all on what is essentially slavery because apparently once you get money from Haiyama, you’re stuck with Haiyama for life.
Like really there is so much gang imagery in this show, it’s like a big PSA of “Don’t Join a Gang, Kids! Or Your Classmate Will Whip You With a Bullwhip Until You Pass Out In an Abandoned Warehouse” and it’s like damn Yugioh fine, I wont, damn.
But like the whole murdery photo album was certainly something because uh--there were more people in there than Kujirada so it’s like...did they die? Did all those people die? Did you in fact murder all those people, Haiyama? Did you manage to kill all those people at age 14 like you’re some sort of Bakura? Like, it’s Yugioh, so I really am just assuming they died but like...can’t add it to the death count until they outright say, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then Yuugi’s timing was pretty excellent.
Tumblr media
colorist kinda messed up on Yuugi’s teeth here. It happens. Cartoons are hella hard to make so we’ll give it a pass.
Tumblr media
The TRAJECTORY.
Haiyama then decides to point out to Honda that Miho is essentially using Honda like he uses Kujirada and that was...kind of cathartic for me, actually. Thank you, villain, for recognizing that this whole Miho obsession thing is uhhhh kind of wrong. I guess we’ll see if the fact that Haiyama pointed this out to Honda will actually stick or if Honda will forget it by next episode.
Although, in Miho’s defense, she may be too stupid to know that she’s actually using Honda. She may just be that stupid. I honestly can’t tell what her deal is at this time.
But then Haiyama decides to try and extend the great offer to Honda of being whipped and manipulated for the rest of his life in exchange for keeping Miho alive, which um. Wow Yugioh, this is a 14 year old kid. Wow, that’s some dark stuff wow, this basically serial murderer has just been hanging out in the back of their class for their what we assume is their whole lives, and NO ONE NOTICED?
Like again, this entire class is just...they gotta be plants. There’s gotta be at least 3 people in this class being made in test tubes underneath Domino by Gendo Ikari, there’s just no way they aren’t.
And what’s crazy about Zero vs the rest of Yugioh is that in Zero they just happened upon a freakin maniac. They didn’t like...search this guy out, or enter a contest that they knew was freakin cursed. No, they just wanted to play with a Tamagachi. That was it. Instead, they found out that their one classmate has been abusing their other classmate to the point of hospitalization for the past several years.
They just wanted to play with a Tomagachi.
After that, Yugi had a fun intro sequence into Yami Yugi where a beam of light expanded across his face from the middle and that was actually a very nice effect 10/10 I can’t actually cap the animation but you can trust me. For a low budget thing that this season appears to be, that was a nice low budget way to do a good effect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(seriously, if Yuugi lived a normal life would he have ever known he was cursed? Would Pharaoh have ever woken up at all?)
Honda at this point passed out due to the constant whipping, which is very surprising because I’m so used to Tristan, who once threw Double Spike Mullet Man over his shoulders. Honda is kind of a weakling in comparison.
So, Yuugi looks down at this device with a little monster in it and is like “yo I have a great idea, lets make the monsters fight eachother” and so we got like...a Yugioh meets Pokemon aesthetic, and FYI Yuugi’s monster still has the weird hand bangs. It’s...it still looks like that.
And, turns out the kick that Jounouchi’s monster gave to Yuugi’s monster made Yuugi’s monster learn how to hate, enough to gain a new power.
Tumblr media
...so, in the end, Yuugi spent a really long time making his monster just a very nice guy, and would have absolutely lost if Jounouchi’s tomagachi hadn’t kicked Yuugi’s tomagachi’s ass. I guess that’s symbolic.
PS never forget that these are Tomagachi’s with a 20-50 pixel screen.
Tumblr media
and there you are, Haiyama eaten by his own Tamagachi.
Yuugi was like “and THAT’s why you don’t whip the people who are your pets. You treat your pets with love.” and it was like wtf that guy was devoured by his own Tamagachi.
And then you think about it a second later and it’s like “WTF YUUGI. Yuugi. That’s still not a very good message.” And like I figured...this is probably a translation error that they accidentally made Yugi seem like he was cool with using people so long as you’re nice about it, but it was in the other version I watched as well so I think the real desired meaning just...didn’t quite make it to the final draft. I hope.
Straight up, this episode would have scared me absolutely to death while I was still in the Tomagachi craze and feeling very guilty about not taking care of them. Like can you imagine just killing your Tamagachi over, and over when you’re 10 and then watching this episode? Like Gremlins did irreparable damage to me as a kid, can you imagine what this episode would have done?
This guy was devoured by a Tomagachi and Yuugi just watched.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don’t worry, Miho says “momma” here so she is still about as blase towards Honda as ever.
They did pan down to show us that Haiyama is still alive after this whole event. Of course he’s...passed out so he’ll probably just end up in the hospital wing in Domino they’ve reserved for Yuugi’s classmates.
...Eaten by a tamagachi.
Now, a little bit of story time, in the process of putting these caps together, I figured well after the fact that I should, youknow, go and check on the spelling of all of these characters (because again, I watch the dub so I have no subs to tell me how things are spelled) and the sub version had omitted quite a bit of the episode, including the parts where Yuugi says his pet’s name.
...so I was like...is Yuugi’s pet named Yuutou or Yuutsu? And surprisingly enough, when I typed into Google “what is the name of Yugi’s tamagachi” ...
Tumblr media
DAMN IT, YUGIOH.
HE REALLY DID CANONICALLY NAME HIS PET U2!
Freakin U2. SPELLED LIKE IT LOOKS LIKE.
That makes no freakin sense, whatsoever. Yuugi is the type of person who listens to weird grungy alternative from whatever local show his weird anti-establishment cousin tells him about and would just--I mean he has so many accessories and eyeliner, he does not put in his Mom’s CD of U2 and drift off, no, he puts in a burnt CD of early Radiohead while he spends 2 hours dying his bangs in the sink. There is no universe, let it be Season Zero or Season whatever where Yuugi acknowledges U2.
I can’t believe this is Canon.
I just...Wow. U2.
U2.
Y’all I am shook that Yuugi is a closet U2 fan.
FYI, I have been listening to U2 for the entire time I’ve typed this. I mean, Pride is a good jam.
Anyways, I know none of you that are too young to know 2gether looked this up when I mentioned it earlier, so here you go, one of the best worst songs ever made. In case you were wondering what I was busy doing as a young tween instead of having a Yugioh phase.

for the au headcanons thing- I made an au where Yugi and the gang are all american high school theatre kids!! Yugi and Joey join theatre as a blow off class but accidently get dragged into the school musical. Kaiba is their stage manager. Fun theatre antics ensue. Pls give me headcanons I desperately need to start writing junk for this
This is coming from being on the other end of theatre but Yuugi does back stage support with Bakura, they paint props and help design the costumes for shows (and make a bunch of terrible inside jokes so no one ever takes the show seriously)
Jounouchi is a surprisingly great singer and dancer, so he usually does lead roles with Anzu, other students think they’re dating cause they really get into it when on stage but are shocked when to find out they’re just salty (but supportive) friends.
Honda and Otogi somehow end up in villain roles, usually alternating with one being side kick, the other the big bad™.
Kaiba as manager tries his best to make an exciting show without raising his blood pressure over details, like he can’t stand when actors rush their lines/don’t convey the right emotion or when orchestra isn’t play in time, so he’s pretty much on everyone’s case constantly. The only time he’s smiling is show night, Mokuba brings his friends from the middle school to watch.
Idk what Atem would do, I can’t picture him being that interested outside of watching what his friends put together. He brings everyone flowers, even back stage crew

CW: Torture, gangs, being drugged and Graphic descriptions of torture. You have been warned
Of course he wasn’t sneaky enough. He pulled on the chains that kept his arms up and against the wall and frowned when they didn’t come loose. His ponytail decided long ago that it didn’t want to stay up and out of his way and now hung loosely around his shoulders.
He’d attempted to sneak in and.... Well this time he didn’t have a solid plan. The others that he’d dissolved so far just needed for him to kill their leader. This was perhaps the wrong group to try and do that with, they were stronger and more.... Assembled than what he’d previously dealt with. And that already made them unpredictable, he should’ve been more prepared.
Maybe he should have told Jaden where he was going after all......
Jounouchi’s arms were tired. His arms were sore and he couldn’t figure out when they’d wrestled his shirt off of him. The first few hours of him being there were a blur, so perhaps it’d been between........ The time he was awake and the time that he’d been stuck with a syringe. ...... Oh right they’d..... Stuck him with something.
Luckily- and apparently- he’d been out long enough for him to have coherent thoughts again.. Though his vision still swam if he moved too fast.
“Oh good, you’re up.” Shit- when did they come in? “You have some pretty scars there.” The man hummed, walking over and crouching infront of the still reeling blond. Clasping Jounouchi’s chin, the man looked his face over and hummed. “What were you doing on our territory beautiful?”
When Jou didn’t answer- his only act of defiance and totally not because his sluggish mind was still trying to comprehend what he’d been asked- the man flicked out a pocket knife and lifted Jou’s chin slightly. “I’m not going to ask again.”
Still Jou didn’t answer. He clamped down on his own teeth and turned away, ignoring how the knife came dangerously close to his adam’s apple. So instead, his captor moved toward the side of his neck, tracing the HT that sat there. He took a moment to appreciate it, then carved over the lines that had just started to heal all the way. He let out a choked sound but offered nothing more. It was painful, but he argued that the burning was worse than a simple knife wound.
Though he didn’t stop after the circle that completed it, starting from the bottom of the circle, the man cut down joining the branding with the stray whip scar that made it over his shoulder. It became clear after a moment that he was getting deeper and deeper the further he got from Jou’s neck.
The blood running down his back wasn’t a new feeling, though it wasn’t welcome in the slightest. He kept himself quiet as the man sliced and sliced, tracing old scars and making new ones in the process. “You’ve been causing trouble in the city Red eyes.” he chuckled, taking away the knife briefly and burying it into his shoulder making the blond finally cry out in genuine pain and surprise.
“Dissolving gangs.” Another stab lower on his arm, “Killing big name players.” Slice underneath the ribs too close to the lungs for Jou to be comfortable. “Making a mess for us to clean up.” Finally he slammed the knife into his leg and left it there. Grabbing a pocket knife from Jou’s collection, the man did the same to both of his arms pinning them further into the wall than he thought was possible. “Goodnight, Katsuya. Sweet dreams.” was the last thing he heard before his head was slammed into the wall and he blacked out.

I want to know what are characters's soul rooms look like. Original we only get to see Anzu and Yugis's. Your idea?
I had to think about this a little but here’s what I came up for some of them (surprisingly angsty, I must say):
- Atem’s soul room after he regains his memories looks like the inside of an Egyptian palace. I think it would be very clean and organized, as after all that happened he’d like to avoid losing or misplacing things in his mind. There would be things tied to his past, like Egyptian games he used to play, but also more modern things, like a duel disk. He would have so many pictures in there - of Yugi, of his friends both in modern and in past times, of his family, we know he how much he treasures everyone he loves so I can imagine his room would be full of images of all the people he doesn’t want to ever forget about
- Seto’s room would be very modern in look. A mix between an office and a minimalist apartment. It would look very tidy, of course, with very few things around (a picture of Mokuba, a Blue Eyes model). There would be a desk that is always covered in papers about whatever the latest idea Seto is concentrated on is. But open a drawer or a cabinet, and you’ll find a real mess within, torn pictures and a broken collar and chess pieces all scattered around, all the things he tried to suppress and forget through the years but he only ends up hiding out of sight
- Jounouchi’s room would look like a real mess the moment you step in. Everything is thrown around, on the ground, in piles that risk falling down from one moment to the other. Duel Monster cards are all over the place, and you could barely step inside without risking walking over some. There’s a lot of things that are Duel Monster themed, but you could find Shizuka’s favorite doll, the one she would always play with as a kid and have Jounouchi join her, or a replica of that one Puzzle piece he stole from Yugi all those years before. No photos for him, just mementos of all his friends. In a corner there’s a box that’s got a knife and some old clothes from when he was in the gang. It’s dusty and closed with tape, and one would easily miss it if they didn’t know it was there
- Mai’s soul room has a certain elegance. There’s comfortable armchairs and tasteful decorations, it almost looks as if she was expecting guests, and there’s always a sweet aroma in it. If one were to look closely, they would see there are small cracks in the wood of the coffee table, that the wall behind the shelf housing the awards she won at various tournaments is ruined and stained. But you’d have to look very closely. Mostly, you’d find her decks, Harpy Ladies dolls, and make up and many fine things
- Ryou’s room would not have that much Duel Monster merch. Maybe a few of his favorite cards, but that’s it. There would be books upon books, especially his favorite novels, most of which horror stories. There’s a picture of his mother and sister, and then there are his favorite tabletop games. A huge, bright colored carpet on hides underneath the ugly stains on the ground in the shape of the Ring, made with some dark substance that looks a lot like dried blood. There’s a bed there - very comfortable for reading, but also good for hiding under the blankets when something ugly and evil is inside your head
- Yami Bakura’s room is the opposite of nice. It’s dark, and humid, an Egyptian tomb, the walls covered in blood stains and hieroglyphs that read of curses and blasphemies. He doesn’t have much other than his anger and his hate for the Pharaoh, and the room shows it, laid almost bare past wicked looking knives and a few riches he stole in times long past. A side of the room is dark, and something moves there, with growls and groans like a caged beast. Even with all his hate, Bakura’s room used to be better, once, with gold that decorated the walls, but the millennia locked in the Ring with Zorc have twisted and fouled the little good there was

YgoPridecember: Card
(I keep shifting between using Japanese pronouns to English ones orz. The card mentioned here is from Zexal originally but I decided to take liberties.)
“Kaiba-kun wants all of us to go to the mansion?” ‘I’m not hearing this correctly am I?’ “Are you sure Kaiba-kun invited all of us to his home? Not Mokuba right?”
“No Yug he did a mass text to all of us.” Yugi swipes his phone and finds the simple message there in his unread folder. “Look, I’ll meet you there. Honda is giving me a ride. Sorry that the idiot hasn’t installed the side car yet.”
“Mmmm it’s ok. You think you do please me a favor and drop off your sister here? I need someone to watch Pschent.”
“Sure.” Jounouchi chuckled. “I forgot that you have a cute furry friend now.”
“Thanks a lot Jou. See you there.” Yugi hangs up and rubs the back of his head. “The last time I went over is during the board game incident. Hmm.” He decide to not ponder on it long and get ready. He sends a quick text to his parents and grandfather just in case they arrive early (not likely.)
Wearing a purple duffle coat, he greets Shizuka by the door and tells her where everything is at for the kitten before closing up shop and going. Yugi eventually reaches the mansion and sees Jounouchi, Honda, Mai, Rebecca of all people, and Otogi outside with Isono. Thankfully it’s not that cold.
“Do you know what’s going on?”
“I don’t have a clue Yug.” Jounouchi shrugs and scratches the back of his head. “Too bad Anzu can’t make it.”
“She’s in America and won’t go all of the way here just to amuse Kaiba.” Honda says matter of fact.
“That doesn’t matter. I’m here with Yugi again! And the rival is gone!” Rebecca sighs dreamily and hugs Yugi tight. The others are glancing at him with curious eyes. He just shrugs his shoulders. She’s harmless. Maybe.
Suddenly they are surrounded by vans and out pops the news crew. “Come on! Mr. Kaiba is going to do a personal interview and make a big announcement at the end! Chop Chop!” Miss reporter sees the gang and approach them. “Question: What is your involvement with Mr. Kaiba? Are you the King of Games and the secondary champion of Duelist Kingdom?”
Yugi almost rolls his eyes when Jounouchi looks smug and puffs out his chest. Before he opens his mouth Isono coughs. “I’m sorry to interrupt but Mr. Kaiba is waiting inside.” The older man leads everyone in and directs them to an area past the dining room. It’s full furnished with overhead crystal lighting, two sofas along with an arm chair and a settee.
Isono situates Yugi and the others on the sofa first before directing the camera crew and lighting to different areas in the room. Miss reporter is guided to the arm chair. It takes no time at all for Kaiba, Mokuba, and shockingly enough Atem to come into the room.
Yugi waves and mouths: ‘Do you know what’s going on?’ Atem shrugs and shakes his head. Kaiba sits down on the settee like it’s a throne and is soon joined by Mokuba. It takes a bit of coaxing to get Atem to sit on the other side, with Kaiba in the middle.
Miss reporter take out notes. She shuffles them several times before giving up and throwing them back into her bag. “Ummm...Is it ok if we start?” She looks nervous. Most people are when they see or talk to Kaiba. He has that type of ambiance.
Kaiba inclines his head. The interview starts off slow. They talk about things such as Kaibacorp. Then it turns into information about Duelist Kingdom, Battle City, and anything that is not related to magic and saving the world. She even ask Mokuba and Atem questions. Nothing really invasive. In fact it’s kind of boring. Yugi sees out of the corner of his eyes Jounouchi falling asleep and Honda looking bored.
“Is there something else you want to tell us before we wrap it up?”
Kaiba chuckles and smirks. Yugi sweats. ‘Oh boy this isn’t good.’ The CEO pulls out a card from (somewhere) considering that he’s not wearing his typical coat and handed it to the former spirit. Atem glanced at him with a raised brow, read the card, then Kaiba, then the card again.
Yugi, in the three years that he knew Atem, never seen his Mou Hitori no Boku flustered and red faced. His cheeks and neck are lit up like Rudolph’s nose and his eyes are impossibly wide. He stands abruptly; opening and closes his mouth. A loss for words. Finally he says with conviction: “KAIBA!”
Kaiba looks downright annoyed at the reaction. “Most people answer with a yes or no Atem.”
Yugi puts two and two together quickly. It’s not a duel or Atem wouldn’t react the way he did. And the news crew did say ‘announcement.’ That could only mean... ‘Oh my.’
Atem, who can’t make up his mind if he wants to throw the card on the ground or at Kaiba, gives it to Mokuba. He talks in rapid Arabic; face ablaze. Kaiba gets up and stands next to him. Face to face, if he realizes it or not, talking back in the same language. Everyone in the room is confused except for Yugi.
Mokuba looks at the two and slowly peers down to reads the card. His eyes grow big. “Oh…..HOLY CRAP.” He laughs and looks delighted. At least one person is happy. “Nii-sama just proposed!”
“WHAT?!” Everyone is floored. Miss reporter looks like she wants to sink into the chair and die. Mokuba shows off the card. It’s a custom made one called ‘Devoted Love.’ A beta card, the text on the bottom is obviously clear with, “I challenge you to marry me.”
“Hey Yug you know what Atem is saying?” Jounouchi looks towards Yugi for clarification.
“Ummm...” Yugi picked up a bit of Arabic from being around his other half for so long. “I think they are arguing about their relationship.”
“So Atem didn’t want to get married?”
“Ummm...” Yugi squints. “Kaiba is talking about-”
“...Because I want everyone to know you are mine!” Kaiba interrupts him with a snap of his arm, speaking back into a language everyone understands, on the edge of throttling Atem.
Silence.
Atem falters like someone hit him with a mind crush. He recovers and yells back in Arabic, obviously angry. They move towards the far corner of the room, yelling back and forth. Nobody understanding what they are saying.
The camera crew are all confused. Miss reporter is hiding somewhere behind the sofa chair.
“I guess the interview is over.” Otogi supplies.
“You owe me money Jou.” Mai pipes up towards the other blond, who is rolling on the floor laughing.
“Oh man this is both crazy and horrible. I never thought Kaiba would propose on national television. Hahaha Yug this is great!”
“I wonder does Anzu know.” Honda questions.
“I think she knows.” Yugi sweats at the text messages he received not only from his friend in America, but also Bakura and Shizuka, the latter seeing the whole thing on the news.
Yugi attempts to sign in on Twitter and isn’t surprised to see it down. “I think Kaiba-kun killed social media.” Facebook still works but most of the pages are discussing the announcement. Asking if the two dated before the pictures to things like them having sex on the blimp in Battle City.
‘Atem respects me and my body to not do that.’ Right? Yugi wonders as he sees the two still arguing. If his closest friend had the chance would he do a quickie with the CEO? Fool around after a duel from the heat of the moment? ‘I better not ponder on that.’ He instead makes sure Rebecca doesn’t get handsy during the chaos. Her not reacting makes him wonder if she knew beforehand or not care. “Oh I just received a text from Ishizu and her brothers.”
“Wow I haven’t heard from them in a while. What are they saying?” Mai looms over, ignoring how Rebecca is seething.
“Ummm Ishizu is translating what Atem and Kaiba said.” Yugi’s cheeks puff up as he holds in giggles. “Atem said that most people do this in private and why does he have to make a spectacle. Kaiba said something along the lines that he wanted to announce to the world that he loves him and starts talking about wedding plans. Then Atem says that this is embarrassing. Umm after the part with the whole ‘you are mine,’ Atem basically told him that he’s never going to be used to Kaiba-kun being over the top.”
Yugi glances at Kaiba who seemed to calm down and laughing. Atem, still red faced, is hiding behind his hands. “They were arguing about their relationship and Kaiba-kun had doubts. Like Atem didn’t love him. Ishizu couldn’t understand it all since they went out of camera but they made up. I think?”
Mokuba looks at the group, the panicking camera staff, and Miss reporter who looks like a pile on the floor. “So I get to be a brother in law?”
