Monday, June 13: The Oath, “Black Rainbow”
Nobody understood why The Oath disbanded so soon after their debut garnered rave reviews (and just a month after it was released), and even though Johanna Sadonis subsequently mined the same territory with Lucifer, there was a particular alchemy between her and Linnéa Olsson that made this group’s demise that much more unfortunate. Tunes like “Black Rainbow” sizzled and tumbled with a classic ‘70s doom feel that felt both lovingly constructed and natural, and not at all pastiche. There was something organic and fun about this, even though it came over 40 years after Sabbath invented the real meaning of heaviness, and Sadonis in particular was a captivating and compelling presence at the mic though Olsson’s swaggering riffs weren’t to be underestimated either. Again, it didn’t really make sense, because even though doom metal was beyond oversaturated at this point, The Oath offered something memorable and awesome, and were quickly lighting up the underground, so their sudden breakup was shocking to everyone on the outside. But in their brief moment, the duo put out bangers like “Black Rainbow” that put most of their colleagues to shame.
