The President of McDonald's USA threw shade at California lawmakers for passing a fast-food law that he said would make it "all but impossible to run small business restaurants" in the state, Joe Erlinger said in a January 25 open letter.
AB 257, dubbed the FAST Act, signed into law last year, could raise hourly restaurant wages to $22 an hour in the state. The open letter was published after the state approved a referendum backed by fast-food chains that would put the law up for a vote in November 2024. The law was previously set to be enforced on January 1. But until the vote, state officials can't implement the law.
A majority of McDonald's, nearly 14,000 restaurants in the US, are run by franchisees, with hundreds of stores operating in California. The open letter was titled, "California keeps looking for ways to raise prices, drive away more businesses and destroy growth through bad policy and bad politics."
In the letter, Erlanger noted that the company wasn't against increasing the minimum wage. "Let me be clear: we support legislation that leads to meaningful improvements in our communities, including responsible increases to the minimum wage. Our business does well when our employees and our communities do well," he said.
"Whether you're a lawmaker, a business owner or leader, or an everyday voter, one thing is clear: California has become a dramatic case study of putting bad politics over good policy," Erlinger said. According to financial disclosures, Erlinger made about $7.4 million in salary, stock options, and other compensation from McDonald's in 2021, the latest year complete compensation history is available.
A coalition of restaurant industry organizations led by McDonald's, Chipotle, and In-N-Out supported the referendum.
Restaurant analyst John Gordon, a consultant for many McDonald's franchisees, said he's not surprised by Erlinger's remarks, which seem to be setting the stage for a battle leading up to the November 2024 vote, he said. 2024 is a presidential election year, and turnout is expected to be high.
McDonald's taking a public stance on anti-business legislation, he said.
Supporters of the union-backed FAST Act, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on Labor Day, say the law would improve working conditions for thousands of fast-food workers in the state.
AB 257 creates a 10-member council of fast food workers, franchisees, franchisors, advocates for fast food employees, and representatives from the governor's office. The council will establish minimum standards on wages, working hours, and other working conditions related to the health and safety of workers. The law applies to food chains with more than 100 locations, including Starbucks, Wendy's, Burger King, and McDonald's.
The industry's trade organization, National Restaurant Association, said the law would hurt small business owners, including fast food franchisees who own one or two restaurants. The organization said higher wage mandates could raise costs for California fast-food restaurants by $3 billion.
Another main sticking point for the restaurant industry – state officials, including Newsom, would appoint members of the 10-person council.
"The state is teaching us a powerful lesson about what our future could look like if this one-sided style of democracy is mimicked elsewhere or goes unchecked in the Golden State," said Erlinger, a native of California. "There are big, important issues that need the attention of lawmakers. Implementing costly and job-destroying legislation like AB257 is not the answer."
Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Employees International Union, said chains like McDonald's, Chipotle, and Starbucks, who backed the referendum, "think they can buy their way out of anything."
Fast-food workers across California said they plan to strike Thursday and Friday to protest chain support of the referendum to overturn the FAST Act.
"California voters are about to teach them an expensive lesson: no corporation is more powerful than half a million workers joining together to demand a seat at the table," Henry said in response to the referendum. "As California fast-food workers defend this landmark law and assert their voice, SEIU is absolutely committed to standing with them in their fight."

McDonalds Presidents Says California FAST Act Will Kill Restaurants
The California FAST act – which would raise minimum wages up to $22 an hour for fast food workers – is on the back burner for now. McDonald’s President Joe Erlinger said the FAST Act, legislation known as AB257, would make it “impossible to run small business local restaurants.” California’s AB257 actually passed in fall 2022, but more than 1 million opponents signed a petition requiring the…

Why McDonald's is unhappy with California's fast food bill
Why McDonald’s is unhappy with California’s fast food bill
Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s US, publicly criticized a California bill that would give the state more control over pay for fast food workersensuring that it unfairly targets the big chains. The businessman’s reaction comes after the state Senate approved a bill that would grant a Council of 10 people the authority to raise the industry minimum wage up to $22 an hour for chains with more…

McDonald’s says sales are back to prepandemic levels. McDonald’s said Thursday that sales of Big Macs, chicken nuggets and french fries got back to prepandemic levels in the first part of the year. Global same-store sales grew 7.5 percent in the first quarter from the year-earlier period. That was driven by a big jump of 13.6 percent in the United States, McDonald’s reported. Revenues for the quarter rose to $5.12 billion, topping the $4.7 billion brought in a year ago as well as the $4.9 billion in the first quarter of 2019, before the pandemic struck. Chris Kempczinski, the president and chief executive officer of McDonald’s, touted the company’s rebound, noting that it had occurred “even as resurgences and operating restrictions persist in many parts of the world.” Profit in the quarter climbed to $1.5 billion, from $1.1 billion a year earlier. Chicken was one of the big drivers for growth in the U.S. The company brought back its spicy chicken nuggets for a limited time and entered the competitive chicken-sandwich market with its own version in February. “While the category is very competitive, we are so far exceeding our projections,” Joe Erlinger, the president of McDonald’s U.S.A., told Wall Street analysts on a call. “We are selling substantially more chicken sandwiches than our previous chicken-sandwich line,” particularly in the late afternoon, he said. Executives highlighted the company’s recently announced collaboration with the K-pop boy-band sensation BTS, which will start in late May. The company hopes to repeat some of the magic it found last year from a similar partnership with the rapper Travis Scott, when it introduced the Cactus Jack meal, consisting of a Quarter Pounder with cheese, bacon, and lettuce; a medium Sprite; and fries with barbecue sauce. The combo was such a massive hit that some restaurants ran out of key ingredients. What remains unclear is which consumer behaviors that changed during the pandemic will stick. In the call with analysts, executives said they expected delivery and drive-through to remain important. But breakfast has been slower to rebound. “We believe that certainly as some consumer habits return to prepandemic ways of life, that the breakfast day part will continue to come back,” Mr. Erlinger said. “And similarly to how it was a real market-share battle prepandemic, we think that market-share battle will absolutely continue and we’re ready and prepared for that.” Source link Orbem News #levels #McDonalds #prepandemic #sales

McDonald's, Taco Bell and Burger King heat up chicken sandwich wars
Tumblr media
“Chicken has been identified as an opportunity for growth across the industry, with chicken almost [twice] the size of beef globally and growing at a faster rate,” wrote Credit Suisse analyst Lauren Silberman in a recent note. “We expect competition to heat up in 2021.”
They certainly are. Here’s what’s new in the chicken clash.
Burger King
Tumblr media
The chain is kicking its current crispy chicken sandwich to curb and replacing it with a new, hand-breaded version. The new item, which comes in original or spicy, is made with a savory signature sauce and served with pickles on a potato bun.
“Chicken is a big business for us,” said Ellie Doty, Burger King’s chief marketing officer. “If the guest is going for a top quality chicken sandwich, they might be going somewhere else right now,” she added. “We’re upping our game.”
Burger King said the sandwich will cost about $4 — $1 less than its current sandwich. It will be available at its 7,000 US restaurants later this year.
McDonald’s
Tumblr media
The burger chain’s three new chicken sandwiches finally went on sale this week. They come in three versions, including a Crispy Chicken Sandwich topped with pickles and served on a potato roll, a Spicy Chicken Sandwich that adds a spicy pepper sauce and a Deluxe Chicken Sandwich that comes with lettuce, tomatoes and mayonnaise.
The chain teased a new selection of sandwiches at last year’s investor day, with Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s USA, explaining that chicken is a good bet for the company.
“Globally, the chicken category is almost twice the size of beef,” he said at the time. “It is growing faster and represents a significant opportunity,” he said. “Developing a reputation for great chicken represents one of our highest aspirations. We want customers to choose McDonald’s for chicken.”
Sandwich prices vary depending on city.
Taco Bell
Tumblr media
Taco + sandwich = success? That’s what Taco Bell is aiming for with its new Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco.
It’s a creative concoction: The all-white piece of chicken is marinated in jalapeño buttermilk and fried with a crunchy tortilla chip coating, served in a puffy bread that’s shaped as a taco. That’s then topped in a creamy chipotle sauce. There’s also a spicy version that includes an additional topping of jalapeño slices.
Taco Bell is serving the tacos only at participating restaurants in Nashville, Tennessee, and Charlotte, North Carolina, beginning on March 11 for $2.49. A nationwide rollout is planned for later this year.
Wendy’s
Tumblr media
Wendy’s launched a grenade into the chicken wars with its newest entrant, a Jalapeño Popper Sandwich.
The $5.99 sandwich is covered in jalapeños including in a flavored cream cheese spread plus six slices of the pepper on top. It also features three slices of bacon, two cheeses (cheddar and pepper jack) and a toasted bun.
“Consumers are looking for flavor, and unfortunately there’s boring and bland options out there from our competition,” Wendy’s Chief Marketing Officer Carl Loredo told CNN Business. “They are hyper-focused on flavor and it’s something they want and need right now.”
The spicy sandwich is the newest iteration of Wendy’s recently relaunched fried chicken sandwich that hit restaurants last fall.

McDonald’s announces “Thank You Meals” for healthcare workers
In appreciation for the healthcare workers, police officers, firefighters and paramedics who are committed to our health and safety, fast-food chain,  McDonald’s will offer free Thank You Meals, between Wednesday, 22 April and Tuesday, 5 May, as a token of appreciation for their selfless service.
Whilst the majority of America is staying home, McDonald’s has remained open, with our franchisees and hardworking restaurant employees serving hot meals to communities who need quick and affordable options, especially those on the frontlines such as healthcare workers and first responders. The company is grateful for the ongoing dedication and commitment of McDonald’s employees who enable McDonald’s to stay open to serve our communities during these challenging times.
Each Thank You Meal will be available at no charge via drive-thru or carry out at participating McDonald’s restaurants nationwide through 5 May. The Thank You Meal, available during breakfast, lunch or dinner, will feature a choice of sandwiches, drinks, and a side featuring small World Famous Fries or a Hash Brown, along with a note of appreciation.
It will be served in McDonald’s iconic Happy Meal box, in the hopes of bringing a smile along with delicious food. Day or night, these frontline heroes can simply show their work badge, or be in uniform, to receive their free meals.
“We have been inspired by the way our franchisees have been going above and beyond to support their local communities throughout this trying time,” said Joe Erlinger, President, McDonald’s USA. “I couldn’t be more proud of how our company, franchisees and supplier partners have come together to give back to those who are working tirelessly for our country. That is truly our McDonald’s system at its best.”
Serving these brave men and women would not be possible without McDonald’s dedicated and unwavering restaurant employees, who are also doing their part to help during this time. McDonald’s employees are the heart of the business, and their health and safety has been and will continue to be, the company’s top priority.
McDonald’s has implemented nearly 50 new safety measures to ensure the well-being of its employees and is continuing to explore additional safety steps in accordance with guidance issued by local and national health authorities including the CDC.
“Emergency physicians and other health care workers on the frontlines are spending hours a day on their feet, often missing meals in their efforts to care for their patients,” said Dr William Jaquis, President of The American College of Emergency Physicians. “McDonald’s Thank You Meal is a much-appreciated gesture for those risking their lives each day to take a break with a hot meal amidst the turbulence.”
During past times of national crisis, McDonald’s has helped and served communities in need, from donating funds to disaster relief efforts to providing food for those impacted by natural disasters. McDonald’s commitment to feeding the nation’s healthcare workers and first responders throughout the current pandemic is a continuation of that dedication. Additionally, McDonald’s local franchises have also been working throughout this crisis to support the thousands of communities their restaurants call home.
“Our restaurants have always been a place for the community to come together and share everyday feel-good moments with family, friends and neighbours,” said Vicki Chancellor, an Atlanta-based Owner/Operator and chair of McDonald’s Operator’s National Advertising Committee. “And, now during times like this, it’s more important than ever for our restaurants to continue to serve and help the communities that have supported us for so long.”

McDonald’s To Offer Free “Thank You Meals” To Healthcare Workers & First Responders
Source: McDonald’s / McDonald’s
In an effort to show appreciation to the brave healthcare workers who’ve gone above and beyond the call of duty during this Coronavirus epidemic, business such as hotels and some restaurants have offered their services free of charge as a token of appreciation and respect (Trump hotels have yet to offer similar amenities but that’s neither here nor there).
Source: McDonald’s / McDonald’s
Now the men and women on the frontline of this pandemic will also be able to enjoy some good grub while on their grind as McDonald’s will be blessing healthcare workers and first responders with free “Thank You Meals” at participating Micky D’s restaurants. Beginning Wednesday (April 22), the house that Ronald McDonald built will be offering the meals to the medical avengers with a simple flash of their work badge and they can keep it moving.
“We have been inspired by the way our franchisees have been going above and beyond to support their local communities throughout this trying time,” said Joe Erlinger, President, McDonald’s USA in a statement. “I couldn’t be more proud of how our company, franchisees and supplier partners have come together to give back to those who are working tirelessly for our country. That is truly our McDonald’s system at its best.”
Whether in the morning, noon or night, the medical heroes will be served sandwiches, fries, and/or hash browns in some OG Happy Meal Boxes. No word on whether they’ll come with toys but hey, can’t have it all, right?
But that’s just one way McDonalds is joining in on the fight against the Coronavirus.
In addition to serving local community initiatives across the country, McDonald’s USA is honored to join BET and United Way by donating $250,000 toward efforts that will directly support Black communities hit hardest in COVID-19. The donation will be announced during BET’s “Saving Ourselves” Telethon, a commercial-free, 2-hour fundraising event, airing Wednesday, April 22 at 8pm EST. This is one of many ways the Golden Arches is helping to aid with COVID-19 relief.
Now that’s hot business.
Thank you to all the healthcare workers and first responders literally putting their lives on the line to save lives across the nation and we hope y’all take advantage of all the services being offered to y’all right now. Y’all deserve it and much more.

The fried chicken sandwich wars are heating up. Here are the new entrants
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/the-fried-chicken-sandwich-wars-are-heating-up-here-are-the-new-entrants/
The fried chicken sandwich wars are heating up. Here are the new entrants
This week, KFC, McDonald’s, Shake Shack and even salad-chain Sweetgreen kicked off the new year with their own takes on the crispy concoction. Cheap, tasty and growing in sales, fried chicken sandwiches are becoming an attractive menu item for many fast food restaurants.
Americans have been eating more chicken and less beef the last few years, a trend the fast-food industry has seized on recently, according to Peter Saleh, managing director and analyst covering restaurants and food distribution at analysis firm BTIG.
“This has been an ongoing battle,” Saleh recently told Appradab Business. “The chicken poultry segment is a little bit more popular these days with consumers. Everybody’s trying to capitalize on that.”
Saleh explained that the sudden surge in new sandwiches — and the marketing of them — is a result of the pandemic, which forced companies to pull back on ads during the spring of 2020 when the virus first started spreading in the United States.
“A lot of them have this war chest of advertising that they used in the back end of 2020,” Saleh said. “They will use that in the first half of 2021 for the new items, including the chicken sandwiches that they plan to launch.”
Wendy’s, Church’s, Whataburger and Taco Bell all rolled out their variations of the sandwich last year. And several new fried chicken options were unveiled just this week.
KFC
Don’t count out the Colonel from the chicken wars. The chain, arguably the original fried chicken franchise, found itself playing catch-up in recent years.
This week, they finally upgraded their signature chicken option with an aptly titled “KFC Chicken Sandwich,” which features an extra-crispy chicken filet served on a buttered brioche bun plus pickles and spicy or classic mayonnaise. It costs $3.99 à la carte or $6.99 in a combination meal with fries and a medium drink.
KFC tested the sandwich last year in Florida before offering it nationwide. It will eventually replace the “Crispy Colonel,” a less premium option of the new version.
McDonald’s
On February 24, McDonald’s (MCD) will release not one but three new sandwiches from the coop.
The new offers are a Crispy Chicken Sandwich, topped with pickles and served on a potato roll; the Spicy Chicken Sandwich with spicy pepper sauce; and the Deluxe Chicken Sandwich, which comes with lettuce, tomatoes and mayo.
The chain teased a new selection of sandwiches at November’s investor day, with Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s USA, explaining that chicken is a good bet for them.
“Globally, the chicken category is almost twice the size of beef,” he said at the time. “It is growing faster and represents a significant opportunity,” he said. “Developing a reputation for great chicken represents one of our highest aspirations. We want customers to choose McDonald’s for chicken.”
If you can’t wait, McDonald’s still offers nuggets and two other chicken sandwich options in the meantime.
Shake Shack
The upscale chain rolled out two new options this week: a Korean-style Fried Chick’n Sandwich and Korean-style Gochujang Chick’n Bites, with both items featuring gochujang, a fermented red chili paste common in Korean cuisine.
The new sandwich combines crispy chicken breast with a spicy-sweet gochujang glaze, toasted sesame seeds and white kimchi coleslaw for $7.19. The Chick’n Bites are made with white-meat chicken and served with gochujang mayo sauce, available in six-piece orders for $5.19 and 10-piece orders for $7.19 respectively.
Shake Shack (SHAK) already offers a fried chicken sandwich and nuggets.
Sweetgreen
It’s not a sandwich and it isn’t fried … but it is crispy and does involve chicken.
The trendy salad chain rolled out an “unsandwichy antidote” to vie with its carb-loaded competitors. The Crispy Chicken Salad bowl combines grilled blackened chicken, two types of lettuce, carrots and tomatoes among other ingredients. The secret to its crunch is a heaping helping of “carbon-neutral crispy rice,” which is a mixture of brown rice and sorghum.
The salad costs about $14.

McDonald’s hiring 260,000 people this summer as it reopens dining rooms
Need a job? McDonald’s is beefing up staff this summer.
The fast food chain says it’s hiring 260,000 people for full- and part-time roles.
It comes as McDonald’s prepares to reopen its dining rooms after a majority were temporarily closed because of coronavirus.
In May, the company laid out the new safety precautions it will put in place with Joe Erlinger, McDonald’s USA president, saying in a statement:
“We are building on the processes already in place such as wellness checks, social distancing floor stickers, protective barriers at order points, masks and gloves for employees with the addition of new procedures, and training for the reopening of dining rooms.”
