Overlord Micro Review - Overlord is a classic B-movie film working with an A-level budget. Wyatt Russell as Cpl. Ford leads a squad of paratroopers on D-Day who discover a small French town being used for Nazi experiments. Beginning as a World War II “Man on a Mission” movie, Overlord transitions, while not perfectly, into a horror driven mad scientist film. Director Julius Avery uses every dollar of his budget effectively. The sets are detailed and atmospheric. Jed Kurzel’s score is a standout, amplifying the tension of the horror and action sequences. The gore effects are practical with well blended CGI enhancements. Although the film’s second act has a messy transitioning style which delays the fantastic horror elements longer than it should have for this style of movie. Overlord knows its audience has watched action and horror movies before. The film plays out straightforward, without a need to wink at the audience in its own self awareness. Overlord is a fantastic genre blending film, which plays to a classic era of fun b-movie entertainment.
