Commission done for @sylphidine from their fic “Call Signs” chapter 15, “Parlor games.”
-
As Mrs. Black rustled away, Ms. Deyvill said loudly enough to be overheard, “I don’t know how she gets around in those skirts.”
A bystander at the buffet, his bony hand holding a rather large brandy snifter, turned and inclined his head as a greeting to the group. “Tallulah, not everyone has your sense of clean lines and simplicity. Certainly my sister doesn’t.” His deepset green-gray eyes behind half-moon glasses glittered with amusement which was not entirely without a dash of malice.  Swatch felt disposed to like him simply because of his evident antipathy to Mrs. Black.
“Fashion does not have to ignore functionality, Anton darling,” she retorted. She got up to give him kisses on both cheeks, which he returned. “Do join us, there’s a love. This is the jolliest little set I’ve had the pleasure of keeping company with since that little shindig Jean and Martin Shafiroff threw for Saint Patrick’s Day.”
“Any excuse for them to dredge up that old Roe & Co.,” the man named Anton replied, taking the proffered seat and tossing a length of his plum-colored scarf back over a bony shoulder without spilling a drop of ruby liquid in his glass.

Socialite nyc
Tumblr media
Like all socialites, this woman is a self-marketing genius, but on a much larger playing field.” “The socialite every socialite not so secretly wants to be, and the twentieth century’s greatest fashion icon, bar none.” What’s more, “she made it socially acceptable-even enviable- to marry a Greek billionaire.”Īs much as it pained some of our experts to say this (one crossed her name out altogether), Paris “belongs high up on this list because of the immense success she has had in parlaying minor, ‘Page Six’– and porno-fueled notoriety into inexorable global celebrity. “The grandmother of all socialites”-and, as such, “the original American snob.” Her “Four Hundred” was the “avatar of any subsequent ‘in’ crowd worthy of the name (e.g., the ‘in’ and ‘out’ lists Truman Capote drew up for his Black and White Ball).” No doubt socialite-ologists will cry foul over some entries-even our own experts may complain-but when it comes to the world of socialites, not everybody can make the cut. This list of the most influential socialites was put together after consulting several experts on the New York social scene, whose comments are below. T hey codified snobbery! They made careers out of fame! And they did some amazing things for this city (see the New York Public Library, the Met, etc.). Phillips and George Wells.Īrt collector and philanthropist Miyoung Lee, socialite Stacey Engman (wearing a sash that read “Art Royalty”), Mary Snow, Jean Shafiroff, and artist Ugo Rondinone attended. The swank Saturday dinner was co-chaired by socialite Debbie Bancroft, Preston T. It was one reason why when it was offered to me, I couldn’t say no.”Īrtists Leilah Babirye, Torkwase Dyson, February James, Karyn Olivier, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, and Kennedy Yanko are included in the exhibit. She said, “What I enjoy most is giving a platform to artists, specifically women and people of color who regularly don’t have these opportunities. Thomas tells us she was tapped in February and that the pair were able to bring together artists quickly using, “a long list that we’ve had over the years.” Well-heeled guests were able to see an exhibit of Jasper Johns prints, dating from 1960 – 2018, and “Set It Off,” a collection of art curated by Racquel Chevremont and Mickalene Thomas, also known as Deux Femmes Noires. The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill brought out socialites, philanthropists, artists and young, hip patrons to its Midsummer dance and dinner this weekend. “I had one customer spend $8,000,” said Joe Gurrera, founder of upscale supermarket chain Citarella. “You know when you see someone with a full shopping cart? Now they have five.”
The well-heeled shoppers are buying “pretty much everything they can,” said Gurrera, whose stores are known for carrying gourmet goods. “Instead of asking for one or two steaks on a tray, a customer will buy the whole tray. Then they’ll move on to shrimp, and buy all the shrimp, and then they’ll buy all the salmon steaks.”
Once they’re done demolishing the meat and fish section, they move on to the prepared foods, Gurrera said. “Instead of asking for a slice of lasagna, they’ll buy all of it. Then they’ll buy all of our root vegetables,” he added.
“Business is insane. We are doing far more business than in July and August,” said Gurrera, who has four stores in Manhattan, three in the Hamptons and one in Greenwich, Connecticut. “People are spending thousands of dollars at a time.”
Hamptons liquor stores also are making bank. At Wainscott Main Wine & Spirits near East Hampton, business was up 500 percent last Friday, to $12,000, compared with the same day last year, said owner Joel Kaye. Freaked-out customers are spending $400 to $2,000 at a time, instead of the normal $75, he said.
“Our clients are stocking up their wine cellars, buying things like eight bottles of a good $200 Napa burgundy, instead of one bottle,” Kaye said, adding that he even sold a $325 bottle of hard-to-get Chablis.
“It feels like the Fourth of July,” added store manager Luis Marin. “We’re having fun and trying to stay open as much as we are allowed to. Our summer people are here and stocking up while they self-quarantine.”
As The Post reported Monday, people escaping to the Hamptons had been going out to eat in droves until the area’s first coronavirus case was confirmed on March 12 — sending people running for shelter.
Philanthropist and socialite Jean Shafiroff is accustomed to dining out on a nightly basis. But in the face of the coronavirus, she has taken the unfamiliar step of cooking for her husband, daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend. And it’s not been cheap.
“I’m spending $300 to $1,000 a day on food and supplies,” she said. The money goes toward chicken and salmon steaks, some of which she freezes, as well as for cleaning supplies and food for her dogs.
“I even bought the drugstore out of all its dental floss. I wanted to make sure I had enough, along with extra toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste and body lotions,” she said. “If I have to be quarantined, I better look nice.”
Shafiroff also is buying canned goods like the rest of America, but only out of an abundance of caution. “I can donate them later,” she said of the items like Progresso chicken noodle soup and Del Monte peas and carrots — brands “I had never heard of before.”
The stockpiling also has meant buying an extra freezer to store the goodies, as well as extra pots and pans for cooking, the philanthropist said.
She still goes to the beauty parlor often, including a recent trip to get her eyelashes done, but now dons a face mask.
“If I look bad, I will be depressed, even if I am just staying at home,” she explained. And on Monday, she also made a trip back to Manhattan — with a friend and her driver — to pick up “more clothes and the mail,” and a “big giant jar of Le Mer face cream.”
The sheltering experiment has already led to memorable family moments, like the night her daughter’s boyfriend, who is from Texas, made chili. It was such a departure from her normal life of fancy gowns and charity galas that she posted a pic of the stew online.
“It’s on my Instagram,” she said.

Getting Kids Involved in Charity Over the Summer
Here are five ways to teach your child about charitable giving over the summer.
While some opt for camps to fill the summer months, philanthropist Jean Shafiroff, author of “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give,” believes that summer break is the perfect time to get your kids involved in charity and giving back to society. Here are Jean’s top five tips:
1. Identify Your Kid’s Interests before Deciding on Any Activity If your child is not interested…

Over the weekend, on Saturday, August 5th, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital held its 61st Annual Summer Party. The party took place on a field inside a huge luxury tent located in Southampton. The evening included cocktails, dinner, and dancing to benefit the Jenny and John Paulson Emergency Department, which is South Fork’s only emergency care facility, treating more than 25,000 people annually. This is one of the biggest and best fundraisers each year. The Stony Brook Southampton Hospital event has raised an impressive $1.5M+ in 2018 and $100M+ over the past 60 years.
Jean Shafiroff and Martin Shafiroff
Bob Chaloner and Chuck Scarborough
Before dinner, attendees enjoyed a cocktail hour. During the cocktail hour, Hamptons Lemonade and Hamptontinis were served alongside top-shelf wines and cocktails; and a new local brand, Montaukila provided its 100 percent agave Azul tequila. The dinner was emceed Chuck Scarborough and attended by the who’s who of Southampton. This year’s honorees are Martin and Jean Shafiroff, both longtime supporters of the hospital. Jean Shafiroff said, “It’s essential that the towns and villages of the East End have access to world-class healthcare which is why my husband and I are dedicated to supporting the hospital in its mission to bring the best and latest in medicine to our communities. It’s a great honor for both of us to receive this award. and we, in turn, wish to thank everyone at the hospital for all they do for this community.” During her speech, she thoughtfully asked guests to take a moment of silence to remember the victims of the recent El Paso and Ohio shootings. It was truly a touching moment.
Bob Chaloner, Cindy Willis, Laura Lofaro Freeman, and Larry Scott
When it comes to décor, you call one of the best in the business, Larry Scott of Lawrence Scott Events. Scott transformed an ordinary white tent into a magical oasis. They provided the ambiance and gourmet offerings. Larry Scott’s floral décor had some guests asking if the ginormous flowers were real!? The inspiration for the floral design was inspired by Jean Shafiroff’s elegant style and glamorous gowns.
The room was filled with many guests who were eager to give. Notables included Laura Lofaro Freeman, Caitlin Diebold O’Connell, Cindy Willis, Bob Chaloner, Steve Bernstein and Debbe Bernstein, Wilbur Ross and Hilary Geary Ross, Greg D’Elia, Rebecca Seawright, Susan Bordeaux, and Howard Lorber, and Dede Moan and Terry Moan, to name a few.
After dinner, just about every attendee filled the dance floor to groove to the live sounds of Element Music. It was definitely a night to remember. Stony Brook Southampton Hospital does an incredible job by providing the best care to their patients. All thanks to the more than 250 physicians, dentists, and allied health professionals who represent about 50 medical specialties. The hospital includes a Heart and Stroke Center and a new Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory was opened at the hospital in 2018. The new Phillips Family Cancer Center just opened in April 2019 providing the East End community with advanced, comprehensive cancer care right here in Southampton in a state-of-the-art healing environment. The Stony Brook Southampton hospital also includes The Breast Health Center, The Center for Advanced Wound Healing, and 32 satellite care centers throughout the South Fork of Long Island. The hospital is the largest employer on the South Fork with more than 1,200 employees.
