So- update:

Got a text out of the blue from a dear friend the other day who just moved and was asking if I wanted her old American Girl Dolls because she’s downsizing. She provided me pictures of an Elizabeth and a JLY 6. I enthusiastically agreed- but I already have Elizabeth so what was I to do?

I was looking at the JLY 6 when it hit me… she kinda looks like Angela Lansbury… and my absolute favorite musical of all time not only stars Angela Lansbury in its OBC, but also possesses generations of stunning costumes across multiple productions. Elizabeth sort of looks like a performer I was fortunate enough to see live in 2017, Eryn LeCroy (who went on the play Christine Daae in Phantom 💕)

NOTE: if you’re under the age of 16, this musical is very dark and I’m not recommending it for you, hence me not naming the show (still easily guessed from context).

ALL of that being said, I will be adding Miss Johanna (Elizabeth) and Miss Angela (JLY) to my home in the coming days and I’m working on making costumes accordingly. I also splurged and decided to make a dress for my JLY 29, Scarlett, based off of Helena Bonham Carter’s performance. Will also not be naming the JLY 6 after the character because “Nellie” is already taken.

ALSO, I wanted to note… I despise when people take children’s toys or products and make them “adult” or edgy. These dolls will not physically reference any of the darker material in the show such as gore- they will only resemble the ladies and their dresses above. I adore Sondheim musicals, a number of the actors who have performed these characters, and this show means so much to me. I also think it will be a fun challenge (specifically HBC’s because movie budget costume, WOW).

Other Notes:

This sides and lid of this spectacular gold box are set with 103 emeralds, perfectly matched and fitted. They are carved in shallow relief to depict cypress trees within borders of repeated stylized leaves. The precious materials and the high quality of the design and craftsmanship suggest that the box was made at the highest level of Mughal court patronage.

Each of the 16 slightly convex rectangular panels that make up the wall of the box is composed of two or more emeralds and is carved with a cypress with its tip curving to the left. The triangular panels on the cover are each composed of three or four pieces of emerald and are also carved with cypresses. The stones are held in place by narrow bands of gold, which also define the panels. The vertical bands are decorated with a sharply chiselled zigzag motif. At the apex of the lid is a diamond. It has an octagonal table surrounded by 24 visible facets within the girdle and appears to represent an early form of brilliant cutting.

The underside of the box is covered with emerald-green enamel over engraved decoration. The pattern consists of a central rosette surrounded by two rows of stems with split acanthus leaves forming pairs of double scrolls. The ground is hatched and cut away so that the enamel is darker in the background and lighter over the rosette and scrolls. The decoration suggests European influence, which presumably came into Mughal court art during the first half of the 17th century with the European craftsmen in the service of Jahangir and Shah Jahan. It is possible that the designs were influenced by engravings from the studio of Bernard Salomon who worked at Lyons in the mid-16th century.

Hi sea, there’s always been a debate amongst the gp when discussing H and L about how ‘proud’ Louis is. I was wondering if you have any thoughts about Louis and his relationship with being seen as a gay man. I do know several former students from his school have reported consistent stories of him being quite mean to gay/more feminine boys to the point of bullying while he was a teenager. Are we looking at his actions through rose-tinted glasses by assuming he’s been proud and secure all along?

I made a couple of posts, but will also link this excellent post by @rougeandtonic.

Every closeted person’s personal history is different, and they do evolve. Dan Howell talked about his transformation. Along the way, people can transform for the better or for worse, and can become more tolerant or less tolerant.

A closeted musician probably won’t go all out supporting LGBT causes, but we don’t see any lateralized homophobia in professional-musician-Louis-Tomlinson, and we see many, many instances of discreet support.

Fandom also tends to discuss Louis’ case as if he has full control and all that he does to show pride is by choice. I think this is very misleading. The Just Like You lyric video is brilliant performance art that shows, by virtue of its execution, the way that a closeted artist is held hostage by the homophobic industry (this idea was suggested to me by a mutual).

The graphics in the video are presented with cut-out magazine and newspaper clips like a kidnapper’s hostage note. The cut-outs of Louis are like paper dolls that can be shredded and disappeared.

The lyrics are presented this way as a riddle— a puzzle to solve. Louis, who loves crime shows and documentaries and Ronson’s A Psychopath Test (which started with an online puzzle), and conspiracies (lol), has presented a puzzle for us in this video, in which the communication and the news pieces are all about industry exploiting artists.

I don’t think someone with this hunger for communication is trying to hide his sexuality. Instead of rose-colored glasses, I think people who don’t see it are willfully ignoring it.

We're getting a bunch of snow today, so the yard is once more halfway photogenic.

As you can see, I practically had to knock Emi and Marina against the door like I do with my winter boots to get all the snow off.

Not really, they're too precious for that, but I did consider it.

Sam’s clean up is complete! (For now lol.) She’s currently in the Ready for Fun meet outfit that I’ve had for awhile because it was the meet outfit when I first got the AG catalog. But I’d like to track down the vest and socks from the Urban Outfit because I have the hoodie, skirt, and shoes from the lot of clothes that were being sold from the same person who was selling Sam. I also have the beret meant to pair with the Vinyl Dress outfit, so I might try to find its parts (minus the dress, which I want to substitute with, like, a red denim jumper instead) as well.

(It’s so funny to think that Sam is older than my Nellie, who I bought around the time I was 10 (so roughly 2005), if her bought date is based on the clothes the last owner had.)

The Clean Up

I’m curious how much the number 6 doll is worth today. I believe I have one but it’s in a western style outfit

So I'm assuming you mean original #6 with the black hair and brown eyes, not the revised #6 with blonde hair and green eyes. If you do mean the former, depending on the condition of the doll and her outfit, you can expect $300-$700. I believe she has surpassed Sonali as the most valuable non-historical/non-autographed doll. If you don't believe me, check out my JLY 6 tag to see examples of dolls that have sold for that price. She's a unicorn, the rarest American Girl doll out there, and so you can expect buyers to pay accordingly.

If you aren't 100% sure if you have one, send me a picture that includes a clear view of her face and her hair color, and I would be happy to help determine for sure what you've got (I'm really hoping you do!). It does happen often that people think they have original #6 when what they've got is a #16, a fairly common doll who's typically not worth much more than she was bought for. #16 has very dark brown hair, but #6 has completely black hair with no brown color in it whatsoever. If you do try to list for sale a #16 as a #6, you could end up with a very unhappy buyer who will expect their money back.

Yesterday I figured out what dolls could be similar to the Sorelline D'Italia. They're not perfect matches and some need modifications. I tried to only look at AG dolls but it was impossible for some

Feinstein’s At Hotel Carmichael Presents John Lloyd Young -Soul Power Up Close And In Person

It’s been a long 16 months - but JLY’s in-person live cabaret performances are back in a big way.

For his first non-livestreamed shows since the pandemic, he had the opportunity to be part of the inaugural season of a brand new venue - Feinstein’s At Hotel Carmichael in Carmel, Indiana.  And it was an honor for those of us in attendance on Friday and Saturday to witness; to feel the joy and share in the music with JLY and Tommy Faragher.

The energy and electricity in the room were palpable when they took the stage, with JLY blowing the audience away right out of the gate with “Lightning Strikes”, which showcased his full vocal range as he moved smoothly back and forth between baritone and falsetto. 

Next up was “Hurt So Bad”, where you could feel the emotion along with him, fado-style.  Since this is a new venue, JLY decided to comprise the majority of his set with songs from his MY TURN album.  And this audience, which was a mix of loyal friends and fans and first-timers, loved every minute of it. 

“In The Still Of The Night” and “Only You” warmed the hearts of the crowd with the richness of JLY’s vocals. Then he left everyone, especially the new audience members, awestruck with his perfect falsetto on “Hey There Lonely Girl” and “Who’s Loving You”.  JLY mentioned that he learned the latter when he was ten years old, and joked that he’s never had to change the key.  It’s all part of the gift of his amazing voice. 

Tommy also wowed the crowd with his soulful “Bring It On Home”, as JLY filled in those who didn’t already know on Tommy’s incredible career and credentials.

When JLY introduced “My Prayer”, he told the story of how his parents used to slow dance to the song together when they were 13 years old - and then he dedicated it to his dad, to honor him for Father’s Day.  It made everything even more heartfelt and meaningful.

It was wonderful to hear “Since I Fell For You” again - and even better to hear “Ebb Tide”, which doesn’t come out to play very often.  JLY’s live performance of this one is so powerful, that I hope he starts including it in his set more often.  

“Show And Tell” is also back, with JLY telling us that it’s the band’s favorite song to perform.  And “Unchained Melody” was the showstopper that it always is, which is why it’s such a favorite with all of us.  So is “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, which is special no matter how many times he sings it.

Something else we all love is also back.  JLY came out into the audience to sing “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” and “Cara Mia”.  You could tell that he was as happy to bring back this part of the show as we were...and it was a wonderful surprise for all of the new people as well.  After months of livestreams and social distancing, this was so good for everyone’s soul.  

He ended the evening with “Working My Way Back To You” and “Sherry”, complete with all of the moves and some audience participation. Of course it left everyone on a high note - but in reality, both evenings in their entirety were high notes, because we had all missed these in-person experiences so much.  

Several of us had the chance to talk to some of the people who were seeing JLY in concert for the first time, and they couldn’t say enough about how amazing it was.  They all hope that this new Feinstein’s venue will have him back again, as do we.  It’s so wonderful to have a beautiful location like this in the Midwest to see him, with great food and a friendly staff that enhance the entire experience.

I am grateful for the livestreams for the times when we can’t be there in person - but I also highly recommend that anyone who has only been able to see JLY via livestream or on demand find an opportunity to come to a show in person as well if they are able.  There is nothing quite like the experience and atmosphere in the room whenever he performs, and you will be so glad that you did.  And I’m willing to bet that many of you will be back again and again, like so many of us are.

This was such a special weekend of shows to remember. I look forward to many more soulful performances ahead - and can’t wait to see what’s next!
