Thinking about the Inkworld trilogy and Mistborn Era 1, and how they handled books 2 and 3 and why I like the Inkworld better lol
Why compare them? Because Inkheart was the last series I read before Mistborn, and I adored it, but more relevantly they’re formatted similarly. both trilogies have first books that function as standalones, followed by two connected sequels turning them into trilogies
The actual analysis is under the cut both because of massive spoilers for both series, and because this is long and I’m not about to be clogging up your dashboard lol
I adored The Final Empire (book 1), but Well of Ascension (book 2) and The Hero of Ages (book 3) were both major misses for me. Though I didn’t love tWoA, I did find it generally fine. tHoA on the other hand I actively dislike. Contrasted to the Inkworld trilogy, where Inkspell (book 2) is actually my favorite! With Inkdeath (book 3) as my second favorite. Inkheart (book 1) comes in third, but I still love that book. The other two just speak to me XD
Inkspell expands on the loose ends left in Inkheart very naturally, and I love that! Inkspell opens with Dustfinger returning home, which works perfectly since he just vanished into the night at the end of Inkheart with Farid. It additionally sets up Orpheus, and once we’re in the Inkworld we meet up with the rest of our loose ends! Basta and The Magpie. Additionally, Inkspell has the advantage of the Inkworld being generally unknown to us the reader. Cornelia Funke has basically free rein to do what she wants as long as she doesn’t violate the whimsical, magical vibe she’s already established in Inkheart. Which she does not, and Dustfinger’s initial return to his world is literally my favorite scene in the whole book <3
tWoA, by contrast, doesn’t really do this imo. The biggest loose ends we’re left with in TFE are allomancy as a whole, the missing atium, and low key OreSeur specifically. tWoA chooses to focus on literally none of this in depth, instead focusing on the government and the Siege of Luthadel. Which is logical, obviously rebellion take overs will have some kinks they need to iron out, but it doesn’t pay any serious mind to what TFE set up and I find that to be a let down. We get a little bit of Allomancy exploration in Duralumin, but that’s it. The atium is relevant exclusively because the invading armies think Luthadel has it, but there’s no anything about it outside of that. OreSeur is just straight up dead! Though I did love Vin and TenSoon, that was my favorite part of the whole book <3
tWoA also squanders one of the things I adored about TFE, the character dynamics. The whole crew was so fun, and it was such a delight to see interact with each other and Vin. In tWoA they’re barely even there! Dockson, Kelsier’s best friend, has literally three scenes in the entire book. He dies in the third one. Clubs? Also has like three scenes, including where he dies. Ham is marginally more present, but Spook is only in like two scenes himself. We see the most of Sazed, which is cool because I like him <3 Instead of focusing on the crew, tWoA introduces new characters! Which are… hit or miss. Tindwyl and TenSoon and Allrianne my beloved <3 Then there’s Zane. Whom I can only describe as a Gary Stu and frankly I want to pick Sanderson’s brain and find out what the hell he was thinking when he made Zane because by all accounts he makes no sense lol
Inkspell and Inkdeath however, introduce new side characters without usurping the focus on the main cast. This is admittedly helped by Inkheart having a smaller cast in general XD But Dustfinger, Mo, Farid, Fenoglio, Resa, and Meggie if you squint (her squandered potential is another post lol) all remain major players, and continue to interact with each other like the did in book one. It’s great <3
tHoA is where things get particularly dicey for me lol. In tone and in plot. I just found it to be depressing, boring, and I do not like Ruin and Preservation. I don’t generally enjoy plots on a cosmic, god fighting scale to begin with, and I actively hate twist, “it was him all along!” villains. I find them to be boring, and feel that they remove agency from the villains prior to them. Also, I think they were set up poorly. If you removed them from the plot, literally nothing changes with TFE, and very little would change in tWoA. Not ideal for a villain you’re about to claim was here the whole time.
This book also continues the trend of no one talking to each other by scattering our protagonists to the four winds! Vin literally only talks to Elend, and maybe Ham once this book. Spook is in Urteau with Sazed, Breeze, and Allrianne, and his message never makes it to her. They literally don’t talk once and that’s a damn shame considering what they could have had. Tonally it’s just death and distraction all the way through, and that’s just,, blegh. No thanks.
Also everyone is so grim faced and boring, I hate this version of Elend, there’s no sass, no bite to him anymore. Just a grim and dutiful general who insists he’s struggles with doing hard things but then does them anyway. I also hate that his character arc goes unfulfilled! My man spends the entire book being worried about his inability to keep people safe, then he gets beheaded after watching an entire squad of soldiers get slaughtered by koloss. Like sure he saved the world but uhhhh yeah that’s not a satisfying conclusion. (Elend as a character was actually just generally not utilized well by the narrative imo. Raise your hand if you remember that this man was forced to sleep with a skaa girl at 13 years old she avoided romance because of it!)
Vin is also kind of boring, which is deeply upsetting because she was a fav in TFE and tWoA. She’s just so,, grim. And nothing else. It sucks. Also I don’t think her arc was done well here either. I love the idea of her finally coming to terms with the two parts of herself, but it felt forced! Vin spends basically no time as Valette after book 1, so it feels dragged out. We did not have to wait to book 3 to resolve this, we could’ve sorted this our way earlier lol
Also the whole thing with Sazed and the prophecy is just,, wut? I’m not a fan of the implication that Sazed is less of a man because he’s been castrated, and since I just generally don’t like Ruin and Preservation in general turning Sazed into god is just not where it’s at for me. It felt bizarre and out of place tbh
Inkdeath, on the other hand, does not have these issues. It’s villain, The Adderhead, was firmly established and was also the primary villain of book 2. He is not a god. He’s a king who was seeking immortality and was kind of foiled. A man, at his core lol. Tonally it is pretty grim at the beginning, but when Dustfinger is brought back, about 1/3 of the way through, the plot takes a notable hopeful upswing. Things aren’t easy, but they’re looking better now <3
I’ll also be the first to admit that Inkdeath’s clear cut happy ending is my preferred story ending lol, which is absolutely major points in its favor XD
I also think Inkdeath handles its characters well. Meggie and Farid do kind of end up on the side, but Mo, Dustfinger, and Resa all really shine. This opinion is helped by the fact that Mo and Dustfinger are my favorites, but I think it holds merit outside of that. They’ve been primary characters since book 1, are continuing to participate in the main plot together, and I find their arcs to be constant and wrapped up very nicely <3
TL;DR: I think tWoA and tHoA squandered their potential by introducing new plot threads instead of focusing on established loose ends, and committing several character assassinations by book 3. Inkspell and Inkheart did not do this, they followed up on their loose ends directly, kept the focus on the characters introduced in book 1, and did not go suddenly off the rails in the climax, instead ending with my preferred traditional fairy tale ending <3

Writer interview
@vixstarria tagged me and I finally get to do it! Thank you <3
I am tagging @sky-kiss @scuttlingcrab and @thedomesticanthropologist
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
13 and some are multi-chapter. All are BG3 except for a german Inkheart one
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
85.408 -that is a surprising amount of words for being active less than a year
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
His consort, his god - I finally wrote smut for a popular ship XD (bloodweave)
At her mercy - kinky sapphic Karlach x Durge smut
Natures most beloved treasure - Halsin x trans masc Tav smut
Direct from Hell Logistics - ongoing Raphael x Haarlep comedy/angst/smut/plot - this one has it all
A song of snow and embers and Copper Hearts share this place. one is a F/F/F/F foursome and the other my Astarion x male Tav longfic
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I appreciate every single comment and try to show that. There's nothing better than the e-mail that says "comment on your work" and it can make my whole day. Sometimes I don't know what to respond if it's just a word or a keybord smash, but rest assured I see you and I love every one of those, too.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Angsty ending hmmmm. Because some of my stuff is not completed yet I am not gonna spoil anything but Dust and ash about Astarion's backstory was naturally quite angsty
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Not. gonna. spoil XD
7. Do you write crossovers?
Not yet. Maybe I could count Copper hearts because I took Francys from my original work and planted him into Bg3
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No, not yet.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do. I am exploring all kinds atm with preferably queer pairings wlw or mlm or nb. I can also write mlw from the men's perspective but not the other way round :D
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not as far as I know.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Boy I wish.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No and I am not sure if I could commit to a project like that.
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Hmmmmm ... Raphlep probably
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
My german Inkheart fic with a genderbent lesbian Basta. Damn I was invested in creating this character, but gave up after a while because it was a lot of work and it being german and a niche topic in a small fandom was not very rewarding tbh. I know I should not care and maybe I'll come back to it when the Inkheart obsession comes over me again.
15. What are your writing strengths?
I am good at setting the scene. Atmosphere and small mundane details that make the setting feel alive. I have always liked that in reading as in writing, because it makes you feel like you are actually there when you can hear and smell and taste the scene.
Also I am okay at developing coherent plot, but that's mainly practice from writing a lot of og work before I started with fics.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
I still struggle with english grammar and punctuation at times so I always have a beta reader. And I am lucky to have great ones.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I am not a fan. It confuses me. Singular phrases and such yes, but not entire dialogue. Especially if it's german in an english fic I get super confused.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
*digs through her files* So, my first works were basically fic for my best friend's story. (I was in my early teens.) But since she was the author the lines between canon and fic are blurry and the "fandom" consisted of three people of which one was the author XD
So if we don't count that the first one would be Hunger Games - It was one chapter and I never published it
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
We'll see what posesses me next I guess, though I think Bg3 will stay with me for a considerable amount of time. And ship wise ... I feel Durgetash creeping up on me.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
Definitely Direct from Hell Logistics. I am having so much fun with it. It constantly makes me laugh and sheme and I also feel all the angst. Also it is ongoing and I get to explore the story alongside the readers (though I have a rough plot structure to keep me on track).

Nine Five people you'd like to know better
Tagged by @thana-topsy Hi lol 👋 wasn't expecting this (/lh)
[3 Ships]
1) Celann and Charlotte. (holding them in my hands) my babies. I love they
2) I'll honestly just put it out there, Chriscariot. That album rewired my brain. The absolute gay yearning. Did you guys know about the Gospel of Judas. I've been so normal on Tumblr. Not in real life. Not in the slightest. Bible fandom has some fun stuff
3) the Mo/Resa/Dustfinger/Roxanne polycule. I am correct.
[First Ship]
I actually think that's gonna have to be Zuko/Sokka. Except I was unaware of what shipping was at the time because I was young and offline. I did think they should go out tho.
[Last Song]
Funeral Derangements (Ice Nine Kills.) Honestly surprised it wasn't something off the Judas album
[Currently Reading]
Inkheart. Again. Yes I finished the series and turned right around and started it again. I did finish The man Born to be King last night tho. Haven't seen the original JCS but yeah. That Judas and 2012 Arena Tour Judas 🤝
[Last Film]
..... Highlander.... I caught a glimpse of it a while ago and there was this cunty old man. I immediately called Bread over and well. There was not as much of him in the film as we hoped. What did we watch (hello??? Plot??? Please???) That goth guy was having the time of his life tho honestly good for him. What a bizarre experience.
[Currently Craving]
The arrival of the books I ordered. I'm gonna be so real. I am so impatient for them to arrive. Even ignoring the fact that Mortimer (my darling little blue jay plush) is being shipped to God knows where (it's Rhode Island. I feel it in my bones that for some reason another package has been redirected to Rhode Island.) Other than that, uh... draw juice. Would like to draw thing

A Rarepair that you love: Wyllach my beloved (BG3; people are sleeping on them so bad it makes me want to tear my hair out!)
honorary mention to Jiang Xuening/Xie Wei/Zhang Zhe (Story of Kunning Palace) because I am a firm believer of OT3 solves the love triangle, especially if all three involved have insane chemistry <3 it's so sad this ship has like only 3 fics ._.
An OT3+ that you love: Hardison/Parker/Eliot (Leverage) and Elizabeth Burke/Peter Burke/Neal Caffrey (White Collar), because you literally could not make me choose between those two ships <3
Favorite Movie: Star Trek (2009), very closely followed by Three Wishes for Cinderella and The Martian <3
Favorite TV Series: 9-1-1 (nobody is surprised xD tho The Mentalist sure is a close second)

Tagging: @like-the-rest-of-la, @oneawkwardcookie, @stagefoureddiediaz, @captain-hen, @kitkatpancakestack and any of my followers that want to do it, I genuinely really really love reading through people's summarized fandom histories like this 👀👀👀👀

hello hello! I have just become a overnight fan of yours i just LOVEE ur blog ever since a moot advocated your work! I wanted to pass on similar questions/musings i had for her, and since i became a fan of urs, i would LOVE to know ur pov on them <3<3<3
Rankings of ur favs :D
what are ur top five favourite most beloved series of all time?
what are ur top 5 most reread series of all time?
what are ur top 5 series to bring with u to a deserted island?
What would u rank your from most to least fav Shadow hunter series? :D
HI! Nice to meet you :)
My fave... characters? Matthew > Alastair > Tessa > Thomas > Will > Grace > Christopher > Cordelia. Those are the ones that I'd categorize as being "faves."
Of all time? Okay, these are the ones that changed me as a person over the course of my life. The last two are beloved childhood stories that shaped me. The Last Hours by Cassandra Clare, The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare, A Charm of Magpies by KJ Charles, The Inkheart trilogy by Cornelia Funke, and A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.
The Infernal Devices, The Last Hours, A Series of Unfortunate Events (back in my youth), The Wallflowers by Lisa Kleypas, and the Mara Dyer trilogy by Michelle Hodkin.
The Last Hours, The Infernal Devices, A Charm of Magpies, The Wallflowers, anddddd the Four Horsemen by Laura Thalassa!
I'll rank the 6 main series. Consider the short stories related to those series as content that goes with the series. (So, Cast Long Shadows is on the TLH tier; The Land I Lost is on the TEC/TMI tier; Bitter of Tongue is on the TDA tier; etc etc). TLH > TID > TEC > TMI > TWP (projected) > TDA.

YOU HAVE READ INKHEART MY MOST BELOVED EVER?????!!!! it's originally written in my first language so it actually was around when I was like around 10 or so (in contrast to most of the other books in that post because not a lot of fantasy books get translated asdfghjkl) and I just, I love it so much, it was the first book that really got me into wanting to write my own stories and it really just is such a love letter to books and storytelling in general <3 I'm so happy to know that you read and loved it too <3
YES. Oh my gosh, anon, I cannot even describe the absolute magic I felt reading that book. You said it best, it really is such a love letter to stories and every time I think of it, I'm filled with that same magic. I'm not against adaptations, but the movie simply did not do it justice. I loved reading that book and I wish I could read it for the first time all over again

hi cutie!! jasmine, chamomile, aloe vera if you please <3
asdlkfjks 'cutie' made me smile, thank you lovely <3
jasmine: do you have a movie or book you loved but will never watch/read again?
hmm... probably the books I loved when I was younger just because I think the joy they brought me at that time in my life is greater than the joy they would bring me now. I'd rather keep the memory I have of the characters and their adventures. some beloveds from my childhood: inkheart/inkspell, the mortal instruments series, a series of unfortunate events (tbh I might reread those at some point though I absolutely adore lemony snicket's writing style)
chamomile: what kind of things do you like receiving as gifts?
oh goodness, I'm the worst person to get gifts for because I never know how to articulate what I want. I try to be very intentional about my belongings so I like receiving things that are meaningful or functional, like something someone made for me or something I needed to get anyway (boring I know). my family is weird about gifts having to be something physical that you keep for a long time but honestly I prefer things I can use and enjoy like candles or food, or spending time doing something together is a great gift in my opinion!
aloe vera: what’s something (mundane) you really want to experience in life?
alright bringing out my soft side for this one, I want to experience some type of routine with a partner. like always sitting together and having tea in the mornings, or taking an evening walk together, or just something that's comfortable and predictable and intimate despite being ordinary. I'm going to leave it at that bc otherwise I'll ramble forever but yeah... something shared and personal and so completely normal
get-to-know-me asks!

1, 12, and 18 (for either mal or TMA, your choice!)
ask me some random writer questions!
1 - Who’s your favorite character to write?
For Malevolent, I love writing both Arthur and John, but I think I like writing Arthur just a little bit more because I do love a regular human who is Going Through The Horrors TM and struggling with his own humanity <3 plus, from a more practical standpoint, writing a blind character has made me consider different ways to convey situations, focusing on the other senses (like, telling what somebody is feeling based on their tone of voice rather than their body language), which i've enjoyed.
For TMA, Jon Jon Jon Jon my beloved Jonathan <3 <3 for very similar reasons as Arthur in that he is a man Going Through The Horrors TM and struggling with his own humanity. i love him as a character AND he's very fun to write, which is a combination that has driven my (checks Ao3) 84 published TMA fics.
(the rest under the readmore as it got long)
12 - What is one character you love but rarely/never write?
For Malevolent, it's the KIY, which can be attributed entirely to Croik's Now That's What I Call Entangled! series which are some of my absolute favorite Malevolent fics and really endeared me to the Arthur/KIY dynamic. TFW ur an eldritch god who spends all ur time hunting down and tormenting the same human and,,,, maybe,,,, you fall in love with him 🥺
For TMA, it's a bit of a complicated answer bc I don't particularly love Peter as a character and don't necessarily feel compelled to write more of him but i also crave more jonpeter fic in my life so. idk. also daisy <3
18 - What is one theme/storyline/idea you wish to write but never have?
Hold on lemme dig into my big list of prompts
For Malevolent, I have a Bartimaus trilogy AU rattling around in my brain that i am 👀👀👀 wanting to write while simultaneously knowing it will turn into a Big Long Project and not having the energy for that rn 😔 i may do it as a series like my selkie au so I can publish specific scenes as they come to me/i feel inspired to do them.
oh, I also have this that i forgot about (copy pasted from my prompt doc):
arthur does actually die in ep. 20, and john gets stuck in a time loop by the kiy a la that one supernatural episode where he can't keep arthur from dying in increasingly horrible ways. the way he gets out of it is by finally giving in and going willingly to the kiy, giving up his autonomy and agreeing to live peacefully and without argument.
For TMA, I have,,,, so many lol. here's a non-comprehensive list:
leitner bodyswap au
hell's kitchen au
jon realizes in s4 that his invulnerability to injury extends to mundane death and becomes. quite careless.
au where martin goes with to great yarmouth and basira stays behind in london, and he gets out before the building explodes and goes searching once the dust has settled and finds jon
inkheart au

hihihihihi 7, 15, 20 i love u
hello Jess my beloved <3<3<3 I put this post in my drafts because I wanted to think about it some more and then forgot about it oops. so here it is way later!
7. is there a series/book that got you into reading?
All books by Cornelia Funke, especially the Inkheart series!
15. recommend and review a book.
Unngh I am so bad reviewing but I would recommend Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. It is written in different writing styles which I loved and the story is really complex and moving. A lot about fate and connections through generations and responsibility and love.
20. what are things you look for in a book?
gut wrenching drama, moral conflicts, murder and death, character development, strong themes (hi cawis) and homosexual subtext.

🔑🎥🎙
For the ask game bestie!! ❤️❤️
Thank you my dear!🧡
🔑 Key to your heart?
Oohh that’s a good one I’d say humour (make me laugh and I’ll fall for you 😂) and being really understanding cause I can sometimes go in an I don’t want to talk to anyone mood and some people take that super serious and personal
🎥 Fav film?
I can’t think of one specific film so imma name my top 3 (that I can think of rn):
1. Inkheart - Brendan Fraser my beloved
2. Cars - feel like that ones obvious
3. The Grinch - Jim Carreys one though I do enjoy Benedict Cumberbatchs one it doesn’t hit the same.
My favourite movie franchise is Harry Potter (fuck JKR though) closely followed by the MCU. I’m super indecisive and my favourites change depending on mood but they franchises stay and I always rotate back to those top 3.
🎙 Can you sing?
Kinda I guess? I’m a soprano in a musical theatre group but I don’t have the confidence to sing solo in shows etc. I don’t feel my voice is strong enough but I’ll happily be in the chorus or in a small group. And if you’re with me irl you’ll hear that I’m always singing something to myself 😂

feeling some writer’s block, friends, so I’m gonna drop a list here and someone yell if one of them sounds good (it’s all Stucky for the record lol):
- ABO AU, trauma and escaping a bad relationship and finding home across the hall, very sweet very angst
- a Romania AU where they have the same basic lives they’ve lived, but they never knew each other, and they first meet when Steve is soul searching in Bucharest after the fall of SHIELD and Bucky is on the run there
- a 1940’s post war AU as fuck AU where Bucky is a twenty-something book repair pro and reclusive veteran thirty-something Steve hires him to work on his vintage collection at his upstate mansion. Have any of you read Inkheart? Not the magic of that. Just. The profession. Lol
- flower shop/coffee shop/tattoo parlor AU, yes all three, the cool avengers are all present and work at these various locations all on adjacent corners in NYC. Bucky is a vet home from service, Steve, bless him, is a florist
- Hydra Cap. Look. This was started so long ago that I’m actually fully rewriting it, but it’s an endgame fix it of sorts. It is not kind though
- Nest Fic 2022 My Absolute Beloved. It’s so soft. It’s so… melancholy isn’t the word I’m looking for. It’s just soft and dreamy and quiet. The boys build a cabin upstate. The fic follows the year it takes to be built. There’s story, there’s love, there’s smut, there are letters, Nat and Sam are there, it’s great
- sugar daddy Bucky. Helllll yeah. CEO/Engineer Bucky, designer/artist Steve, they meet, sparks fly. This will be multi part rather than one long thing. Lots of fun and kink and cuteness and possession and good good soup
- sugar daddy Steve, because I have to have one of each obviously. This one is way more Daddy Kink heavy, as is my custom, and probably dirtier honestly lol
- VISIBLE MYSTERIES MY BELOVED. Babe new coffee shop cryptid hunting AU just dropped. Mothman is in this. I’m not kidding.
- the wedding series; literally just that. A series of one shots all depicting various SteveBucky weddings, because as often as I say they’re married I haven’t shown a fucking wedding yet which is criminal I think, like I think I just go to jail now
Anyway. Yeah. Them’s the long fics, I just. Brain is everywhere all at once and I can’t settle on one but I have so many options I’m really excited about and I guess this is a poll as to what you all might think, if you felt so inclined
✌️✌️✨ love ya, smooches <3

why does a movie have to be good? is it not enough to stare at Brendon Fraser for two hours?
