an in-depth analysis of war and peace baby names
one thing we don’t talk about a lot in the war and peace fandom (such as it is): the main characters’ canonical children. this is probably because they have very little significance to the overall plot, and most of them appear only in the epilogue, which most people hate anyway. this is all fair enough, but for the purposes of scholarship and entertainment, I’d like to compile some information on what, exactly, the war and peace characters have chosen to name their children, and to make a few general comments on the significance thereof
the data
by the time of the second epilogue, set in december 1820, the five main characters of war and peace (andrei, pierre, natasha, marya, and nikolai) have a total of eight children. they are:
andrei and lise (1 son)
nikolai (nikolenka): only child, born 1805. at least ten years older than his next-oldest cousin
pierre and natasha (3 daughters, 1 son)
marya (masha): presumably the oldest daughter—natasha jokes to pierre that the only time she’ll be able to wear the ornate comb he bought her is “when she takes little masha into society.” maybe born c. 1814?
elizaveta (lise/lisa): mentioned once, birth order uncertain
unnamed second or third daughter
pyotr (pierre/petya): baby son, born c. 1820
nikolai and marya (3 mentioned children + at least 1 more)
andrei (andrusha): eldest son, maybe born c. 1814-15?
dmitri (mitya): mentioned once, presumably the second son
natalya (natasha): only daughter, three years old in 1820, so born c. 1817
one unborn child to be born sometime in 1821, name and gender unknown
some points of analysis
by the end of the book, the next generation already has an andrei, a pierre, a natasha, a marya, and a nikolai, which really says something about the way these people live
nikolai and marya name their oldest son andrei and their oldest daughter natasha, which I sort of love. it very much feels like something they would do
both marya and pyotr have double meanings as baby names for pierre and natasha: marya b/marya d for masha, and pierre/petya rostov for petya jr.
only one child (petya jr.) is named after a parent, and two (nikolenka and natasha iii) are named after grandparents. neither nikolai, natasha, nor pierre have chosen to name a son after their fathers
which is sort of fucked up when you think of it, right? nikolai bolkonsky, objectively the worst of the fathers, is the only one who gets a grandson named after him
on that note, nikolai’s marriage to marya means that the nikolai-andrei-nikolai-andrei pattern is seamlessly continued at bald hills, to the point that the post-wap generation has both a nikolai andreievich and an andrei nikolaievich
also, and I cannot believe it has taken me this long to get to this, pierre names his daughter LISE? how are we meant to take this? what even are the optics of marrying your dead best friend’s ex-fiancée and then naming your daughter after his first wife?
but it’s also kind of sweet, right, and there’s some level of karmic justice in seeing lise get honored with an epilogue namesake
dmitri/mitya feels completely random. the only notable dmitri in the book is mitenka, count rostov’s incompetent lackey/business manager, who is implied to bear some responsibility for the rostov financial disaster and who nikolai openly dislikes. surely nikolai would not name one of his sons after this guy?
but then where does mitya come from, especially since there are so many other more obvious choices (ilya, petya—although maybe natasha reserved it?—even vasya after denisov)?
actually vasya rostov would be so cute. I just feel like it’s notable that nikolai doesn’t have an ilya. nikolai’s relationship with his dad at the end of the book is such underexplored territory
i’ve seen katya floated as a name for natasha and pierre’s unnamed third daughter before. it depends on your interpretation of the characters, of course, but my personal headcanon has always been...................sonya

favorite moments in comet and why, if you're feeling extra also your favorite war and peace moments and why, i care, i asked
okokok let's go through these real quick and by real quick i mean let's thoroughly elaborate bc i have so many >:))))))
great comet
in the prologue when the ensemble goes NATASHHAAAAAA and ANATOOOOOOLLLLEEE
"BUT SHE's using you papa wants your moONEY papa"
every time gelsey sings in genral <3
no one else's staging is just so beautiful my GOD <3
in the duel when during pierre's "then i feel a pleasant warmth in my body" part anatole does a stupid little dance it's so funny
the little dance amber does in the chorus of charming
NATASHA AND ANATOLE DANCING DURING THE BALL LOOKS SO GOOD
the flowy spinny dresses in general
when dolokhov literally YANKS ANATOLE BY HIS HAIR and threatens him with death in preparations
nick choksi being so pretty
when lucas starts playing the violin <333333
dolokhov's stupid little entrance in the opera
war and peace
ok let's start with ippolit and lise at the beginning of the book bc my god it was giving
natasha's little part where she's looking at the moon from the window and she's like "sonya look at the moon !!!!!"
that time ilya rostov was on the verge of a breakdown over the chaos that was going on when the rostovs were leaving moscow, and fucking ALPHONS BERG showed up and ASKED HIM FOR MONEY because vera wanted SOME PIECE OF FURNITURE
ippolit.
"THE PRUSSIAN KING- *W H E E Z E*"
i've talked about that part where anatole and dolokhov were yelling at each other through the walls to "COME EAT SOMETHING FFS" several times before
marya b progressively growing happier after her father's death
nikolai's gay little tsar parts
that one time everyone cross dressed and sonya was rlly just having the time of her life
THAT TIME PETYA OPENED THE BEDROOM DOOR TO THE GIRLS WHILE NIKOLAI AND DENISOV WERE FUCKIN BUTT NAKED
petya's last few chapters where he had a big autism moment in the middle of the night
the time andrei looked at a tree and went "my god.............. that's so me....."
THE TIME ANDREI WAS BLEEDING AND DYING ON THE GORUND AND NAPOLEON HIMSELF CAME AND STOOD ABOVE HIM AND ANDRERI WAS LIKE DUDE MOVE YOU'RE HIDING THE SKY
maria "so WHAT if he slept with his wife if he didn't want him to he should've just fuckin said so" dolokhova
anatole and dolokhov canonically inviting balaga to their orgies.
why do they have orgies.
i was once at a coffee shop with my best friend that had a translation of wap but instead of orgies it said "feasts" and when i read it to my friend he went "yeah feasts of DICK"

Great Comet and/or Fiddler on the roof for the meme?
I’m going to do War and Peace because it has more content than Great Comet, plus it clarifies issues of canon interaction or lack thereof. Hope that’s alright!
War and Peace
My favorite parent-child relationship god do I have one? favorite in terms of being interesting would be Bolkonsky and his children. Favorite in terms of being good? Maybe Ilya and Natasha. He’s just a sweet dad who wants to spoil his daughter, perhaps to his detriment.
My favorite sibling relationship? hands down Andrei and Marya.
My favorite family relationship (other) uhh....Natasha and Sonya maybe?
My favorite friendship between two people Pierre and Andrei <3
My favorite friendship between a group not really any groups in this. Maybe Nikolai, Denisov, and the boy who becomes the Nikolai to Nikolai’s Denisov whose name I can’t remember.
My favorite mentorship uhh...Denisov and Nikolai
My favorite rivalry I can’t think of anything rn. Maybe Dolokhov and Nikolai? Are they rivals?
My favorite hatred/antipathy I love whatever is going on between Andrei and Nikolai. Those bitches just hate each other.
My favorite potential relationship between characters who never talk in canon OK so they do Canonically talk but not ON PAGE and I really wish we actually got a scene where Marya Dmitrievna rips Bolkonsky a new one.
Fiddler on the Roof
My favorite parent-child relationship Tevye and all his daughters. Him and Chava break my heart. Him and Tzeitl are the sweetest.
My favorite sibling relationship I wish we got a little more of the sisters as sisters! I guess Tzeitl and Hodel because Matchmaker is such iconic sister-roasting.
My favorite family relationship (other) do Tevye and Golde count? I guess that’s not really gen, but that’s the one other family relationship I want to shout out. Like they are a romantic relationship but first they are a mother and a father, and that’s how they come to love each other.
My favorite friendship between two people uh...no one in this show really has friends, huh? The Constable and Tevye are an interesting friend relationship...until they aren’t, of course. Maybe Tevye and Gd?
My favorite friendship between a group uhh...the sisters?
My favorite mentorship n/a
My favorite rivalry uh...Lazar Wolf and Tevye specifically at the wedding
My favorite hatred/antipathy Perchik/The Bourgeoisie
My favorite potential relationship between characters who never talk in canon ooh maybe Perchik and Fyedka, but I’m biased because I played them both. In one production.
send me a fandom/piece of media for the gen relationships ask!

At some point, I rly need to commission someone to draw angel Crowley in feral defensive mode because I love him.
Ilya hissed. No. This was the right thing to do. Cut off the supply lines. Get rid of the trouble-maker once and for all. He took a step forward and froze at a grip like iron on his arm. A man, pale, red-haired, bare-armed and furious, drew him back. “No.” Years of familiarity with No moved Ilya’s hands of their own accord. One beneath the ribs. One to the face. The red-haired man was spilled on the filthy cobbles. Ilya turned and took less than half a step, his body wrenched back. Panic forced the breath from his lungs, his limbs defying his struggles, locked and rigid and motionless. “I said,” the red-haired man snarled behind him, “No.” Ilya tried to swear, but couldn’t. It was as if his body had turned to stone, and through no will of his own, his feet dragged him backwards, deeper into the dark of the alley. The red haired man was standing now, shadows cutting across his face, his eyes invisible. “You won’t touch him.” “Fuck you!” Ilya gasped out. His muscles burned with effort, trying to lunge, to fight, pain blazing through him. The man tutted quietly, wiping his own chin with long, thin fingers, which he held out into the light. Blood gleamed there, but not like any blood Ilya had ever seen. It shone like polished metal, the colour… wrong. Not red, but… but shimmering like gold and flame and– What the fuck was he? “I think,” the man said in a voice that should have belonged to a gentle woman, soft and kind, “you need to learn a lesson, Denisov Ilya.” Fuck! How did he know him? This stranger in an alley who walked in winter, bare armed and shoeless? “You want to know what I am, don’t you?” The light from the street was behind the man, his face lost in darkness, except the sharp curve of his smile. He lifted his bloody hand and Ilya fought harder, but the grip on his body tightened. A single bloody fingertip pressed to his brow. “Look and see, Ilyushka.” A thousand eyes and wings as dark and brilliant as starlight flooded his vision and blinded, dazzled, terrified, Ilya Denisov screamed.
