The United States is turning into a warzone against the uprising of the infected and the twin brothers, Mike and Ike, are separated from across the country as they fight for their survival in their own way. Mike becomes a nomad and escapes his old college campus with his friends, while Ike hunkered down in his campus with his friends and fortified it even further . One was constantly on the run to look for a place to settle down, the other was shielded while desperate to look for answers to the apocalypse they're in. The chances of them running into each other are low, however it's never zero...

A/N: Oh my fucking god I've teased this for so long and I'm finally finding the courage to actually start posting the chapters lol. sometimes, hotshot feels like he’s playing second fiddle in ike’s world. which, well, he is. and hotshot should be used to being second, just the same as he is in brooklyn’s hierarchy, in his whole life, and really it usually doesn’t bother him. but sometimes it wears him down. between everyone in brooklyn only listening to spot and ike’s world revolving around his brother, hotshot gets it in his head sometimes that he doesn’t matter at all. he doesn’t do anything for brooklyn aside from repeat spot’s orders and try and go by their word for his own, ike’ll blow him off without a word if mike needs him more - he just gets distracted, hotshot knows, he doesn’t mean it, he’s just so used to dropping everything for his brother - and hotshot’s nothing. a placeholder, the sort of thing that could be taken away without really affecting anything else.

so. hotshot goes a few days without being able to get ahold of ike at all. he passes message after message to manhattan that he wants to meet ike on the bridge like they usually do, wants to know if he’s free that night, wants to know if he can just come see ike, but only ever gets passed messages back that ike can’t make it then for some reason or another. he’s busy, he’s tired, he’s told everyone that he’s not seeing anyone tonight, told everyone to tell hotshot that he’s sorry but he can’t meet for a while. like he expects hotshot to just wait.

ike is wildly relieved when things finally blow over for him - maybe mike was sick or something, maybe it was a whole bunch of things that kept him busy and stressed beyond belief - and how much he missed hotshot crashes over him like a wave. he immediately tries to return any of those messages he’s been blowing off, tries to get message to hotshot that he wants to meet again - wants to make it up to his boyfriend, kiss him until he can’t breathe, hold him for hours to make up for the time they’ve been apart and apologise until his tongue goes numb. he wants to explain himself finally, rather than the silence he’s been unintentionally providing. but now it’s his messages that aren’t going through - everyone brooklynside is only offering shrugs, saying they don’t know where hotshot’s at, blindly guessing that maybe he’s busy or something. nobody’s seen hotshot - but nobody seems to care.

and maybe hotshot can handle silence like this, can sit and wait like a second-in-command does, when ike goes missing. but ike can’t. he heads straight to brooklyn to find his boyfriend, who wholeheartedly believes nobody is looking.

Ike cuddled closer to Hotshot, curled in his bed in Miss Medda's house. Mike was asleep in the beanbag in the corner, holding tightly to his teddy bear.

They'd only lived with her a few weeks, but it was the best place they'd ever stayed, and Ike hoped that they would be able to stay. He hoped Medda would adopt them, or at least foster them until they aged out, but he wasn't going to get his hopes up too high.

So, for now, he was going to enjoy the moments he got to lay with Hotshot, knowing that his brother was safe.

His friend-definitely nothing more than that, at least they hadn't talked about being more than that- brushed his fingers through Ike's messy curls. "What's on your mind, Ikey?"

Ike shifted, so he could look up at Hotshot, blinking a few times. "Hm?"

"You're real quiet," Hotshot murmured. "Just wanna know what's goin' through your head."

"Just thinkin' about how nice it is here..." Ike replied, stretching in the sunshine slanting through the window blinds. "How good it would be for Mike if we stayed here."

"It'd be good for you, too, Ike," Hotshot told him, smiling, brushing his fingers through Ike's hair again.

"I adapt better 'n Mikey," Ike whispered, curling against Hotshot's side again.

They were silent for a moment, Ike listening to the beating of Hotshot's heart, and the taller boy gently playing with Ike's hair.

"You know," Hotshot murmured, eyeing the many toys scattered around the room. "When I was little... I thought my toys was gonna come alive when I left..."

"Like Toy Story?" Ike smiled at the thought, shifting to look up at him.

"Exactly!" Hotshot flushed as Ike shushed him, both watching Mike for any sign of waking. "Just like Toy Story.

"I still... kind of... think they do..." his face went more red at the confession.

"Aweeee, Shot, that's so cute," Ike cupped his cheeks with wide eyes. "Are you scared of that?"

Hotshot hesitated, then nodded. "A little bit..."

Ike's eyes went even more wide, heart seizing in his chest. That's so cute.

"Don't worry, Hotshot, I'll protect you."
