Scar keeps watching them, from where he floats in the water, sunshine beating down on his neck and drying his hair. He's watching them, and he feels confused, because this isn't the way he knows things to be.

There's this human, tall and slim and well-dressed, hair slicked back, a stray strand falling into his face. Everything about him screams simultaneously posh human danger stay away and soft soft soft kind harmless, and Scar thinks he was never more confused by someone in his life.

But then there's Grian, and it's like adding fuel to the flame; because Grian is a seafolk, just like Scar, but he's standing out there on the cobbled street, grin wild and heart unbound, as he does his hardest to make Mumbo—this human—stutter and blush.

And the thing is, Scar's tried calling Grian to the water. He's tried over and over and over again, and Grian just... refuses.

Which would be okay, Scar thinks. It would be okay, if Grian truly didn't want it.

But it's the way he looks when he says no, that makes Scar try again and again, despite the piling up rejections. It's the way he looks so homesick, so utterly lost to the fight with some inner craving. Scar can't stand it. Whatever Grian is fighting with, Scar wants him to give in, just so that Grian can stop looking like he's drowning on land.

But Grian looks at him with unsteady gaze, something hard and warning around the edges, before shying away. He pretends, and Scar can recognise that pretense anywhere, because he himself is the king of it. So Grian can't fool him.

He can't fool him, but he can make his heart ache. Because Scar can't make him do anything. Grian is stubborn, immovable. Afraid. So, so afraid.

Scar can't watch it anymore. He wants to give Grian something, but Grian keeps insisting he doesn't want it, even though everything in his eyes and the curve of his mouth and the way he holds himself screams that he needs it, actually, and Scar can't make him see it, and it hurts too much to watch.

So he leaves them to joke together, to laugh with a faint, faraway semblance of genuineness (it rings hollow to Scar's ears) (oh how he yearns to hear the true thing), and without notice, he slinks under the water and swims away, before the pain could get any worse.
