part of what made across the spiderverse so perfect was that it was largely centered on WHO spider-man is, in EVERY universe. not just Miles, or Peter, or Gwen, or Miguel. Spider-Man. it was about the ESSENCE of Spider-man. Spider-Man is love for humanity. Spider-Man is having to sacrifice and lose everything you love for the mask. Spider-Man is rebellion against the powers that be. Spider-Man is about trying to do both, in every universe. about not taking no for an answer or listening when everyone tells you your destiny. refusing to choose between the things and people you love. that’s why Spider-Man is so compelling: they want everything, even though everyone else tells them they can’t have it. that it’s not meant to be. and they just. keep. trying. keep getting back up. they just keep going, man.

I feel like this hasn’t been said enough, but the animation in across the spiderverse is so good because into the spiderverse was able to prove that it works. Like y’all need to understand the impact that into the spider verse had on the animation industry. It proved that animation styles can be diverse and people will enjoy it! If that movie didn’t come out we wouldn’t have gotten puss in boots last year or teenage mutant ninja turtles this year. We wouldn’t have gotten the Mitchell’s vs the machines, we wouldn’t be getting wish or migration. Into the spiderverse and it’s various animation styles were and continue to be revolutionary in the same way that Toy Story was revolutionary 30 years ago. They literally forced a change throughout the whole industry! And it gave the space for across the spiderverse to do even more!!
The bottom line is, across the spiderverse is only able to be so great because into the spidverse set the standard and paved the way for them too.

Ok these are my spiderverse age estimations Currently. I might’ve missed some context clues in the movie so feel free to correct me/share your thoughts but this is what I have so far. (Edit: I have an updated list!)
Bc of the year and a couple of months time jump, the ages are most likely:
- Mayday, math wise, is 7mo. at the oldest. Idk baby ages so that could be plausible.
- Peni is probably 12/14, there’s a good argument for either 11 or 13 for the first movie.
- Miles is 15/16
- Margo seems to be about the same age as miles so 15/16
- Gwen is a confirmed 15 mo. older than Miles so 16/17
- Pav is probably Gwen’s age so 16/17
- Hobie seems a bit older than Gwen so probably 17/19ish
- Depending on what point in noir's story he’s coming from(bc we rlly don’t see his face), the man is probably 27/28 on the older side and 18/20 on the younger side. Personally I’m taking the younger side, and I can explain in detail Why I think that. (Edit: I have!! If you’re interested go check it out Here!)
- RIP Peter is still a cool 26
- Ben Reilly is probably about the same age 24/26
- Jessica Drew is probably late 20s so 27/29 but I could see her being younger.
- Miguel is probably early 30s so 32/34. The man was a scientist before spiderman and we seem to be decently into his storyline by the time the movie happens.
- Peter B. Is 39/40
- Spider ham is like 54. “2 days?! Hahaha, I’ve been spider-ham 30 fucking years.”

If I had a nickel for every multiverse movie I watched this year that chemically altered my brain and had an antagonist at the center of the multiverse who had a connection to bagels, I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but holy shit it's weird that it happened twice.

Do people who watch the Across The Spiderverse movie understand what dramatic irony is?
From Miguel’s perspective, if Miles goes home and “saves” his dad the entire fucking universe will collapse. He has first hand experience with this, that was the Point.
We the audience know that this is a fucking kids movie, Miles is gonna find a way to save everyone or something. But MIGUEL DOESNT.
As far as Miguel’s knows Everyone Will Fucking Die. It’s not even the trolly problem! If Miles saves his dad then EVERYONE will die INCLUDING his dad. That was the FUCKING POINT.
Miguel is trying to save everyone, that’s what Spider-Man does. Tries to save as many people as possible.
Did y’all even watch the movie?!

something about the way that miles spent all of itsv building up the confidence to carry out 1610!peter’s legacy and be spider-man, being told that anyone can wear the mask, only for everyone in atsv to constantly tell him that he’s a mistake, and that he was never supposed to be bitten, that *he* can’t be spider-man

ive been gone for a while and i was in the middle of work and scrolling on my phone when i found a cute small detail. in itsv when miles goes to buy the costume and asks about returns, stan tells him the suit always fits...eventually. later when miles goes to peters secret lair he looks at his suit and sees himself in the reflection of the glass, you can see that his reflection doesnt reach up to the mask. when he returns and looks in the glass this time he has a determines expression and you can see that his reflection is lined up with the mask, insinuating that hes ready and the suit fits him, hes grown into it!!!

Oh my god I just noticed this parallel in the movie the way that miles pulls down the mask when he first runs from the cops after breaking into his Peter’s grave
Tumblr media
And in this scene where he pulls down the mask literally turning invisible , having to run from his cop dad being bent over his uncle’s corpse. I just god. Both of those deaths he feels responsible for or felt in some way was HIS responsibility. I’m actually irl crying rn. Do you fuckibg hear me

Someone probably already spotted this, but I think it's cool so I'm gonna share it anyways. I was watching the trailer for Into the Spiderverse, and I came across a cool line.
Miles asks "How am I supposed to save the whole world?"
Peter responds "Well you can't think about saving the world. You have to think about saving one person."
The second movie is about Miles risking the world because he wants to save one person! His dad! I loooove when sequels connect back to ideas of the first movie.

I went to this thing today
& it got me thinking *atsv spoilers*
In Pavitr Prabhakar's universe (Earth 50101), altering the canon led to a dimension disruption event
Tumblr media
If Miguel O'Hara (Spiderman 2099) is correct and Miles Morales is the original anomaly...
...Then why didn't Miles Morales' universe (Earth 1610) develop a similar dimension disruption when the spider from Earth 42 bit him, turning him into Spider-man and preventing him from ever becoming the prowler? The Earth 1610 universe so quickly adapted making Uncle Aaron the prowler instead. Similarily, the Earth 42 universe did not *literally* collapse without a spiderman.
Tumblr media
What I'm suggesting is: Maybe it was a 'canon event' for Miles to get bit by a spider brought to Earth 1610. That it was a natural succession of cannon events that lead Miles to challenge the accepted rules of spider-society 🕷
It was always canon for the canon to be broken

i don't think miles necessarily chose to pursue physics just to get to gwen and peter. he's a really smart kid, that's why he was transferred to a prestigious stem school. clearly he has an interest in science already. like, yeah, he is also really passionate about art, but he can be passionate about more than one thing. it's not a bad take by any means, i just think it makes his character feel a little flat imo.

my thoughts/analysis on Miguel O’Hara
Tumblr media
slight spoilers (tl;dr at the bottom)
1) His actions destroying his family and universe = self-hatred, guilt, trauma, and feeling responsible for preventing other universes’ collapse
2) Dr. Strange and MCU Peter’s actions = too many villains in the wrong universes, causing Miguel stress and anger at having to clean up their mess
3) Miles = Miguel’s last straw
He sees his past self & mistakes reflected in Miles, and might think of Miles accepting his dad’s fate as a sort of redemption for Miguel, since he himself wasn’t able to do that. Also, Miguel’s probably mad that they both were anomalies—Miguel when he took over his alternate self’s life and Miles being bitten instead of Peter—yet Miguel’s universe collapsed whereas Miles’ adjusted its canon for him. Also, since Miguel sees Miles as the original anomaly, he blames him for Spot and all his havoc.
So when Miles tries to save his dad, saying he’ll write his own story, Miguel gets so furious since he’s seeing this “past self” make the same mistakes, and doesn’t believe the canon can be successfully changed. By stopping Miles, Miguel wants to avoid another Spider-Man making the same mistake, and enduring the same guilt and pain.
TL;DR: Miguel’s trauma and guilt + stress and annoyance at multiverse shenanigans + the parallels between him and Miles + Miles trying to repeat the action that still haunts Miguel = man had enough and snapped

Becoming Spider-Man
What makes spider-man, spider-man? According to Miguel, canon events are what makes someone spider man, but I say it all boils down to THE spider man quote:
"With great power, comes great responsibility."
Spider man could be anyone behind the mask, that's the original point. But not everybody can be spider man, it takes a certain person to be them. It's like Ratatouille's thesis, "not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere."
I believe there are three points to being spider man; the power, the responsibility, and the acceptance of that responsibility.
First is the power, usually in a spider bite. That power could have chosen anybody, and chose that single person in that universe. I say the power because it doesn't have to be a spider bite, (spider-ham was a spider bitten by a pig and nobody questions him) so it doesn't matter if Miguel got bitten, only that he got the powers.
Then comes the responsibility, or rather, the reminder that you have it. Spider man is a hero because there is great injustice in the world and he actually has the power to stop it, by himself. It's like an expantion of ability, a normal person can pick up a piece of trash and thus should, but they can't clean the entire earth. If a single person could do that, they now have the power to take on that huge responsibility. When most spider people get their powers, they may do nothing or light-heartedly put on a mask, but most don't know how much responsibility they now have and need a reminder. Usually an uncle dies, but they don't have too, Gwen had Peter die. Death of a loved one isn't a requirement, the event just has to remind or show the person how much responsibility they now have. It just so happens that death is a really effective method.
And lastly, meeting and accepting that responsiblility. What I consider to be THE defining spider man moment. Chosing to become spider man. Instead of running away or denying that you have it, you decide to face the responsibility given to you and take it head on. Chosing to put on the mask, equip the webs, and take that leap of faith into being spider man. This moment is so important because this is the crossroad between being a hero or being a villain. Superhero and villain origin stories are very similar to each other, almost always having tragedy or pain, the major difference is that a hero choses to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else, while a villain choses to inflict it on others.
The Leap of Faith is the most important part of Miles' story because he choses to respond to his responsibility by deciding to be spider man. Miles had a choice and chose the hero option, and we know he could have chosen differently, we've seen it, Miles-42.
Miles-42 had the power, the resonsibility, and the choice, and he chose to be The Prowler.
And here's what I've been trying to build to this entire time, Miles isn't an anomaly because he became spider man, Earth-1610 and Earth-42 aren't in danger from collasping because both Miles from both universes went through all three steps. Miles-42 seemingly went through them in a different order, but still did them. I'm guessing it went his dad dying (the responibility), chosing to become The Prowler (the acceptance), and then his uncle supplying him with the means to do so (the power).
The police captain serves as a kind of test, you have to face the tough decisions and personal risks this job intails, and what are you going to do about them in the future? What will Miles decide to do when faced with chosing who to save? Miles choses the same thing as Pavtir, "I can do both."
It doesn't matter if Pavtir actually did or if inspector Singh dies, what matters is that Pavtir choses to do his best everytime. Gwen's dad quiting isn't breaking canon because that moment is about Gwen facing a hard choice and chosing to confront it.
Chosing to be spider man and accepting that responsibility is the only "canon" there is.
But what happens when you reject that responsibility? You end up like Miguel O'Hara
Going purely off of what the movies show, Miguel got the powers, the responsibility, and then ran away. He was spider man for a long time, but when he saw a universe where he didn't have that responsibility, he chose to not have it. We don't know if that universe had a spider man in the first place or if Miguel became that universe's spider man, but we do know he was there for years. He might have gone back and forth between universes, being a dad in one and spider man in the other, but he still went to another universe to have a family. Maybe he could have went back to start a family and a happy life in his home universe like Peter B did, but maybe that wasn't possible.
What did happen was that Miguel's responsibilities caught up to him when it was clear he wouldn't chose when faced with them. Maybe that could have been the fate of Gwen if she avoided her home universe for long enough, I don't know. What I do know is this:
Miles chose to be spider man and thus became spider man, and Miguel chose to not be spider man and thus isn't spider man. Both of them got great power, and one of them accepted the great responsibility.

concept: spiderverse arcobaleno
(vague spoilers if you haven't seen the movies!!)
LOVE it hello??? omg yesss. but also, what are we actually going for here? spiderverse au as in a crossover fusion with the arco all being spider-man from different universes? because design-wise alone i think it'd be fun to play with if nothing else! i just know reborn would still go for his suit, and i'm not saying there's no way to make it work and cool but what if we DIDNT make it work or cool because where's the fun otherwise. and it cracks me up to think about it because it's like, my dude. nO zerdtfhd. 😭😂😂
OR are we talking a spiderverse au within the khr universe where we tweak the arco curse to make it, like. to make the arcobaleno title a single concept/entity embodied by seven different people each in their own ways, instead of it referencing the seven strongest each in their respective field. if you get what i mean?? so like there'd be AN arcobaleno, but what the title entails would necessitate seven different people who'd be the same but in different ways to fully embody it. do you get it???
and what would the canon events be about then? well, being cursed would just have to be one of them, right? also walking on the path of the strongest/greatest and suffering losses along the way could be another one. and i feel like saying the sky arco would play miles' role here, as a treat. they deserve to flip fate/destiny off whenever they can. <3
oH WAIT what about colonnello as miles?? who's canonically the one who tries to interfere with the curse and--OHHHH okay, okay, consider this please. what if... trying to save a loved one from the curse/to interfere with the curse altogether and failing was another canon event of being an arco? and--hear me out--what if this particular canon event started with bermuda?
it makes sense, right??? especially if we say someone tried to save him from the curse, resulting in him being only half cursed like lal, which we could make as a reason why he survived long enough after kawahira removed the pacifier from him to become a vindice. and maybe he even ends up as a vindice because of the specificities of his half-curse.
talking about kawahira, i guess he'd be miguel in this scenario, right? but what if... he was peter b instead? OKAY HEAR ME OUT VAN. kawahira going out of his way to pick someone with enough potential to become an arco, to nurture them, mentor them, to make sure they do end up the strongest all so he can curse them with the certainty that at least this one will be strong enough to bear the curse........ you get it, right?? the ANGST, the BETRAYAL, the LOSS OF AGENCY AND FREE WILL, the BROKEN SENSE OF SELF!!!!!!
OH WAIT!!! if kawahira is either miguel or peter b, then.... what about making bermuda as either one of the two too? i mean, you know those vibes they had in the movie? 👀 do with that what you will because this is just for you to rotate in your mind. <3
oh i almost forgot, but i think we should just throw tsuna in the mix here. i actually first thought of him to play miles' role, and i know we're talking about the arco here and he isn't an honorary arco or anything (THEN AGAIN--), but his bond with reborn shapes reborn so much, i just like to have him there too when i can to keep reborn the same as we know him to be in canon. and like, it IS just as fun to think about a reborn who never met tsuna and was never influenced by him, but i love tsuna and their bond so he gets to be there too. <3
*GASPS* WAIT BECAUSE WHAT IF HAVING A TSUNA WAS ALSO A CANON EVENT?? and... Something happening to him i guess? like, remember my post about how all the arco have a teacher side to them? the manga basically already paired them up too! reborn/tsuna, skull/enma (the shimon), fon/i-pin, viper/chrome, verde/mukuro (the kokuyo gang) and... i'm sure we can come up with something for the rest easily enough!
and that's all i have off the top of my head i think? sorry for the excited spitballing haha, i'm just really vibing with this au!! so by all means DO tell more if you have more, i'm all ears! 👀👀👀
