What an incredibly frustrating piece of fiction this is shaping up to be.
Where do I even start.
OK, on the one hand, the needlessly esoteric and vibey storytelling is kind of a plus. That's not a thing many anime do anymore and I kind of miss it as someone who was first exposed to the medium in part by very high-concept sci-fi anime. Also the action is great; any time a fight happened I was at least consistently having a good time, the choreography and animation are really good and I absolutely love the combat theme and find it weird how rarely they use it. In general I love how the show looks and it will remain watching for its visuals alone even if nothing else comes together.
Which is good, because everything else is a huge mess at this point. Add it to the list of anime I regret giving the benefit of a doubt.
Everything Metallic Rouge does or tries to do is held back by the fact that Rouge Redstar herself has the morality of a gradeschooler. In the early episodes, this was kind of cute and it seemed like the show would be in large part about her shedding that idealism to become....I don't know, pick one; a hero to the Neans? Some kind of cosmic avenger bound to neither side in this conflict? At least someone who has SOME kind of convictions beyond "I hate fighting!" ?
Code Eve is here revealed to be the work of Rouge's mom(?), a biophysicist, and assistant to her surrogate father, named Dr. Eva Kristella. She is the one who installed the Asimov Code in Neans in the first place, which means that in this universe, all of the oppression that the already-wonky analogue for minorities face was the work of a single person. If you disregard any stab at symbolism here, this is a fine plot twist *in a vacuum*, but when put back in the context of the show it completely defangs anything Metallic Rouge has done or seemed like it wanted to do with this material. Systemic oppression happened because Dr. Kristella did an oopsie and ended up regretting it. That regret was what caused her to make Code Eve, which can somehow disable the Asimov Code, but she didn't activate it herself (maybe she couldn't? This isn't elaborated upon) and instead planted it within the "soul" of Rouge and the other Immortals.
It's kind of impressive how thoroughly that strips out any applicability. There is no way to read anything as subtext anymore, because this is purely a genre thing and has no connection to anything real. Any bite this series might've had is gone.
But OK, fine, let's ignore that and just take it as a weird sci fi thing. Surely at least Rouge recognizes that the Neans are being oppressed to shit is a bad thing and joins the resistance, right? Especially now that Naomi has betrayed her (a plot twist that comes out of fucking nowhere btw) and revealed her true colors? Nope! A decent chunk of episode 8 is taken up by mealy-mouthed moralizing more or less dismissing the Neans' situation because, well, The Immortals Are Violent, so it's impossible to say if they're justified or not. Gene, Rouge's brother, says something to the effect of this not being "the right time" to liberate the Neans and that the inevitable violence of a revolution would only make things worse for them. I'm not crazy for reading this as complete fucking lib shit (a term I don't use lightly), am I? The show seems dead-set on playing Rouge's naivete as something admirable instead of something deeply offputting and inappropriate to the situations she finds herself in.
Like, I'm being A LITTLE uncharitable but honestly not particularly so? I'm mostly just confused, like, what even is the point of any of this? A thing I suppose I had conveniently forgotten about some of those sci-fi shows I mentioned in the opening paragraph is that they're occasionally not actually about much. Sure, the GOOD ones are, but there are plenty that have been mostly forgotten because they don't use the genre to do anything or say anything of note. Metallic Rouge's mix of aesthetics is still interesting---all of the Immortals look really cool, for example---but I would be VERY surprised at this point if the series pulled anything coherent together in its last four episodes.
Then again, who knows, I thought I had this show figured out once before and then episode 5 happened, so honestly who can say. Maybe it WILL find some way to justify its milquetoast politics and Toynbee Tiles-ass worldbuilding in a way that's actually coherent and interesting. I really doubt it, though.
The worst part is that through all of this I STILL don't actually think the show is outright bad. It has enough going for it that I'm going to watch the remaining third of the series and I will probably not completely hate those 2ish hours of remaining story, but it has JUST enough going on that the ways in which its deficient are hugely frustrating instead of being the kind of minor flaw that it's easy to brush off.
At this point my favorite character is probably Cyan, who shows up barely-foreshadowed in these episodes to try to kill Rouge for no obvious reason, but she has a fun design and a clear motive, so that makes her easy to root for, in my book.

I love the Romantics (esp 2nd gen) and was wondering where you learn more about them outside an academic setting?
I am by no means an expert, but I will try to answer by using stuff that has helped me!
For books, I highly recommend Young Romantics: The Shelleys, Byron and Other Tangled Lives by Daisy Hay as an introduction to the second generation Romantics. My only complaint is that it leaves out a ton of entertaining stuff imo, but it’s meant to be brief. It isn’t available for free anywhere afaik, but it’s very worth buying. It gives an overview of the movement & explains how all the key figures are interrelated in a very clever way. For biographies imo the best on Byron is Byron: a Portrait by Marchand, most agree the best on Shelley is Shelley: The Pursuit by Richard Holmes, most agree the best on Mary is Miranda Seymour’s Mary Shelley, & the best on Keats is (more arguably?) John Keats by Walter Jackson Bates. For critical analysis on the works, it’s best to research on a case-by-case basis (there are literally thousands of books & papers analyzing Frankenstein… I shudder to think of attempting to read even half of them).

Having access to databases and libraries really helps, but those are academic (unless you have a public library—if so, pls use it). If I’m researching a broad topic I sometimes start through Wikipedia & go from there, searching for what information I need by “phrase searching” on Google.
IMPORTANT ADVICE: this will all feel very overwhelming and confusing at first! I highly suggest just picking a work or a writer, finding something that really interests you, then learn more about it/them if you’d like, & just continue from there as a starting point. For me: I knew a *little* about these writers, and I’ve always loved Frankenstein, but I didn’t start any heavy Romantic research until I read Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage by Lord Byron, specifically Canto III, which is considered one of his best works and one of the key Romantic works in general. It really shook me to my core. I believe I discovered it from the Wikipedia page on the “Byronic Hero” concept (which stemmed from Childe Harold). I really just went down the rabbit hole from there… and I don’t know how I got here…

Btw — despite being an English Lit major, I haven’t actually studied Romanticism in any of my classes sadly! I just haven’t had the opportunity or it hasn’t come up; my program is mainly based on modern topics though, and so most of us only get to take a few historical classes. But my research on this has been independent. The first gen Romantics have been briefly discussed in one or two of my classes, and Frankenstein has featured in a lot of my classes, but that’s in a league of it’s own really—it’s one of the very few classic novels that most Americans are familiar with tbh!

never mind on the catholic thing again. My brother snapped me back to reality 😬😬😬 moral OCD + anxiety + CSA + intense fear of death and dying = feminine urge to convert to Catholicism. When you step back and look at it it’s kind of ridiculous and I can’t in good conscience be part of an organization that has brought pain and suffering to millions of people for the last 1500 years.
One thing that made me hmmm was my RCIA instructor trying to explain the trinity(which is heresy btw, it’s completely beyond human understanding) and she compared it to how one woman can be a daughter, a mother, and a wife. Oh like maiden mother crone? Okay….
But with my brother I was complaining about an old friend from high school who is super neo-lib, TRA, etc but in the army and works for the feds 💀💀 and I called her a hypocrite and my brother just said “you’re one to talk, catholic” like oh. My brother is VERY GOOD at getting straight to the fucking point. So anyways
And really how the fuck did I ever buy into a MAN creating the universe…. I’m keeping The BVM and Chad Mary tho bc they rock

Hey there! I searched ‘information sciences’ on Tumblr and one of your posts was one of the first to come up (the pictures were pretty cool, btw!)
Just— if it’s not too much trouble. Could you tell me a little about the degree and or field, what it was/is like to study it such as what a typical day looked/looks like, why you chose to, and if you’re working on a job based on it, what that is like? Also, if you’d recommend it?
Asking… as someone who thinks they might enjoy info/lib sci but knows almost nothing about it, is 17 w/ no idea what to study lol, and the closest university to offer information sciences is in their country’s equivalent of another state—

Thanks so much for asking this! Sorry if it's been a while, I somehow didn't see your message...
So, my degree is a Master of Information with a concentration in Library and Information Science. There were also available concentrations in data science, archives, school librarianship, etc.
I think the first thing to consider is what kind of environment you'd like to work in. I knew that I wanted to be a librarian, and so I structured my degree around courses that would be best in that field. Of course, every degree is different and has unique offerings, so I would try to do research into what kind of information science courses a university has before applying. Some are more focused on data and tech applications, while others have more offerings in humanities-type courses, like human information behavior.
As far as what a typical day was like, my experience was unique because I completed my entire degree during COVID and so I was fully remote. I also had the opportunity to do multiple internships (HIGHLY recommend) and so the majority of my day involved doing work for both my internships and classes. There wasn't a lot of work with official due dates, but because of the nature of my concentration, I mostly had discussion boards and readings, and essay assignments.
I currently work as a research librarian, so I'm directly applying my degree every day to what I do. I love my job! I think if you're a curious person who likes to learn new things regularly and enjoys organizing and categorizing things, information science would be a good fit for you.
My biggest advice when you consider pursuing the degree is to consider what field you'd like to work in; for example, health care/medicine, law, corporate, government, etc. There are information scientists everywhere! Figuring out what field you're most interested in can help you determine whether a specific university or program is a good fit for you.

It's interesting how often, even when advocating for good universal programs, advocates and politicians feel the need to pay service to identitarian liberal morality. Not just "House the Homeless" but also "btw 60% of homeless are poc and queer women", as if there's some big group of people out there who will be all "naw fuck the homeless" unless you remind them that the homeless aren't all "cishet white men" or whatever. I honestly don't know if this is actually helpful or purely product of the lib-left activist/academic/media bubble.
Even among various minority/marginalized groups, is this winning them over by saying "hey we care about you this is for you" or is it grating Liberal Piety, that a self evidently good and right thing can't just be good and right on it's own terms? Genuinely curious.
My impulse is to emphasize universalism, (ie - the homeless need to be housed, period, the end), and suspect that the rest is sort of alienating and confusing the matter, potentially leaving people not explicitly mentioned to feel implicitly excluded (however wrongly) but I don't know if that's accurate, or if general universal claims work the same way - does it leave minority groups feeling implicitly excluded? Or is that just an affectation/assumption of the political/activist/media class that doesn't really bear out amongst most people?

A la a certain cult I will not name, WRU has people who interact with all the subreddits like this to try and track down anyone who purports to have proof of any of these spurious accusations
r/apetforme: People sharing photos and funny stories about their pets/pets they’ve seen out and about. Like a guy showing a photo of being behind a famous movie star in line at Starbucks in NYC and the guy’s pet is next to him, smiling prettily at everyone - “Look, she looks so fucking happy, right?”
r/unresolvedmysteries (a real reddit btw and a great one): has occasional posts about missing people devolve into discussions over whether or not they were kidnapped by WRU/turned into a pet. They talk about Isaac Thompson’s cold case a LOT. The last thing anyone heard from him was that he was going to sign up for some kind of anxiety support group. Everyone thinks Isaac jumped off a bridge. He’d just had a terrible fight with his boyfriend, who was threatening to kick him out if he didn’t get help, his family was very disapproving of his sexuality, it just makes sense. IT’s what the cops have always said probably happened. But some redditors have noticed that WRU’s Client Success Director is occasionally seen with a man who looks very much like him - and @spiffythespook the Farling Flayer has been seen with what looks very much like a similar or identical man, too. There are arguments. People have been banned for getting too worked up about this.
People the r/unresolvedmysteries group thinks might have been abducted:
1. Daniel Brennan, (@moose-teeth) a cop who went missing and who, weirdly, other cops seem totally unconcerned with finding
2. Isaac Thompson, presumed dead, but photo evidence suggests otherwise
3. Logan Marks - 16 years old when he disappeared walking home from soccer practice, has never been seen since, not even in photographs. Family insists he is not dead, even years later. While Karen tells Peter he isn’t allowed to leave the house without an escort/permission because he isn’t good enough, the real reason is that his family has stubbornly refused to allow him to be declared legally dead and remains convinced he’s still alive.
The description of a van seen in the area matches the description of what is believed to be a WRU van, hence concern in the reddit that he may have been abducted.
4. Erik Turner (@spiffythespook, from BTHB Used as Bait - I made a last name up since he didn’t have one listed, feel free to tell me to change it) , disappeared after being last seen with another boy in the park. 16.
5. Liam and Keira (@fairybean101) Harker, 18-year-old fraternal twins who vanished while studying at their university library. Eyewitnesses recall seeing a man speaking with them, but no one saw what happened after they left. Someone who looks very much like Liam was spotted with Owen Grant in a popular youtuber’s Pet videos and at a ski resort Owen visited with the Host (@shameless-whumper) while on vacation. One redditor posted photos.
6. Noah Wentz, an outspoken pet liberation activist who was seen several times with the daughter of a member of the WRU board, then vanished. Last seen entering a public restroom while on a morning run with friends. Has never been seen again, not even in the occasional blurry photograph.
Pet lib groups run several reddits, and Nine is very active on all of them, constantly trying to utilize resources to track down what happened to Eli after he was recaptured. He doesn’t know what Eli’s original name was - by the time they met, they had both forgotten whoever they were before. He doesn’t know if there’s a missing persons suggestion out, or if Eli actually did sign up willingly. He doesn’t know - he just knows that you can’t trust what WRU tells you.
He is on all the reddits and message boards, desperately hoping he’ll find Eli’s photo, or some detail he recognizes.
When you talk Box Boys on reddit, you might find yourself talking to Nine.
For the record, Nine thinks Isaac Thompson is Karen’s older Box Boy, Dex. He saw the guy in WRU once or twice, and the man he met looks so much like the old photos he’s found. But he can’t prove it, and it’s just a hunch.

King of Prism SSS episode 1 commentary!
....I ended up talking about the Crunchyroll subs way more than I meant to. But you see this is the first time ever I have read a King of Prism translation that was not mine. So that was kind of a big deal for me.
Please note when I mention things that have happened “so far” at this point episodes up to 9 have aired in Japanese theaters. So I have seen everything but the Shin/Louis episodes and ending (Part 4).
It blows my mind how much Shin actually EXPLAINS in this episode. I have been waiting for so long to actually have someone (outside of supplementary material) to actually explain the difference between academy style and... wait....
....THE FUCK..... (we’re not off to a good start with these subs maybe haha...)
Seriously what the hell.
Shin’s house is just so plain! And NORMAL! His parents just look so.... NORMAL.................. (t... to...o.... nor... mal.....)
AHHHH I have been waiting to pause on Leo’s house for weeks! There is so much to see. In Leo’s episode they say his dad is a character designer, which is the reason why Leo is always surrounded in the pair tomos. (Except wait pair tomos are supposed to be real in this universe so wait huh--)
I HAVE ALSO BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. I can’t get over how perfect this picture is and how perfectly it shows everyone’s relationship. I especially like the gay left corner where we have Bell claimed by Otoha, and Hiro standing NEXT to Bell, but his hand is on Kouji’s shoulder.... ahhh these kids....
There is a lot of foreshadowing for future episodes when Shin introduces everyone, but I won’t be pointing out what ahah....
As soon as Over the Rainbow goes into their jump you can pick out any first timers in the theater audience ahaha.
Good lord this scene killed me and everyone else in the midnight showing, and for several showings afterwards. Despite not being cheering, just seeing that turtle in the hot pot and we were DYING. And then it got WORSE.
I really wonder how much farther they can push the envelope with Kouji. At this point it’s too late to go back. No life rafts to abandon the Kouji ship.
My ad-lib for this scene in theaters is “DIAGONAL” btw
But a lot of the time most of us are laughing too hard to say anything.
The translator thought “Boys’ Prism Show” was a specific event or something? Why is “Boys’” capital?
Oh come on this is the best translation they could come up for this. Wait.... wait how did I translate this again when it was on Prism Rush? I think I went with something like “Do you want to enJOY yourself with me in Takadanobaba” or something like that because this pun DOESNT WORK IN ENGLISH nnnrgh

Okay yeah this translation is a bit rough around the edges. Like what. But to be honest I am not 100% sure what Minato meant here either.... I’m not sure if I agree with the translator that the delayed thing was a part of the name of the dish? Ahh this is going to drive me crazy.
In the theater everyone yells about wanting to see the Hiro version of this commercial.
And Tsurugi really can’t make up his mind about his color.

LONG AWAITED ANIME DEBUT OF PUDDING A LA MODE
Well technically SSS is the long awaited anime debut of much King of Prism lore.... but.... PuuDDing A la MoooDDEE

TWINS AND NIKKANEN ANIME DEBUT
Did you see them!? Because I sure didn’t the first couple times I saw this episode. I couldn’t even get a proper screenshot with Ukyo’s face in it. Sorry Ucchan ahhhhh.
This is literally their first and only anime appearance so far.
But I’m so glad they sneaked them in. They’re real!
And like I mentioned in the comments of one of my posts before, they are probably still living in the new Edel Rose building.
So like..... Jin looking at Louis and seeing him change into Hijiri or other characters is actually an ongoing trope in SSS. It happens several more times. And I have been debating whether it’s something Louis is doing on purpose, or if Jin is just that far gone. It could so easily be either, or a combination of the two.
I have been waiting for WEEEEEEKS just to pause on this stupid piece of paper and read it to find out what is going on in this scene and why Edel Rose is in debt again. But now I’m kinda more confused, because they introduce another reason for Edel Rose doing the Prism One later. But maybe that’s just on TOP of this, I don’t know........................
In this scene when Hijiri says they have to talk, everyone in the theater is like “HERE?!”
When I was at the theater greeting with Junta-san, Igarashi-san, etc., the boys talked for like 10 straight minutes about Minato cooking in this scene and Kouji just going ahead and tasting it. They were so stocked on this scene it was ridiculous. I could barely tell what they were saying hahah...
This line right here might be my favorite voiced line in the entire show. Even though it’s just “thank you for gathering here today”... the way he says it, especially with what you know he’s going to do next. It’s like insincerity wrapped in sincerity wrapped in sarcasm wrapped in sincerity again. I swear it leaves a slimy residue in the air.
So if you haven’t figured it out the Prism One is basically the framing device for SSS. The character episodes skip around and take place at different times (Some seem to take place months in the past even. I think Leo’s episode for example takes place before he meets Nikkanen as there is something in it that I think dates it I won’t say what. Since they all move back into the old school it’s hard to tell), but it all ties back to the Prism One tournament which slowly progresses over the series.
I like how they put one of the series biggest spoilers just in the opening but at the same time I am also kinda glad they did. People need to know. Hopefully seeing this kind of stuff encourages people who haven’t yet to watch Rainbow Live before the end of this series.

Episode 1 is the only episode that has this random, out of place foreshadowing. I think they specifically put it in episode 1 to warn you that things are all fun and games now, but serious shit is gonna go down in the Part 4 Shin/Louis episodes................ huhhhhrrrh.........
And to add up to this, in the upcoming episodes one of the themes they keep coming back to is how much Shin entering Edel Rose changed things for everyone and how much he means to them......
I’m so scared Part 4 is gonna be PAINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
The screen stays on him for like two seconds longer than the other boys.

btw if i wanted to fuck teenage girls i just would, it wouldnt be hard and i dont give a fuck im not scared. i dont do it because i dont love any teenage girls, i only ever loved one girl, we were both teenagers when we dated, its crazy how attracted to her i was back then, i guess i was a pedophile when i was 17 fucking my fifteen year old girlfriend. good thing i grew out of that!
look obviously i fucking despise older men who would take advantage of a young girls naivete, but im illustrating that the reason why this issue is fucking impossible to deal with in a non hyperbolic or hypocritical way, is because its a symptom of a deeper issue, namely the complete destruction of natural human courtship behaviors.

Off-line developing during an intercity trip in 2019
As you might imagine from the title, I am at the moment of writing this article sitting in a train from Berlin to Hamburg. For those of you who have never been in Germany...we do have WIFI on the trains here, but contrary to what you might expect it is really bad. (And if it is sometimes fast enough, you get only 200mb of traffic <= Thanks to mac address randomization that can be bypassed)
Wait, what? Bad WIFI on trains in the first world industry nation Germany? Yes, even during my travel on a train in Thailand I had way better WIFI than I ever experienced in the German trains. There are two main factors for that:
Bad mobile network overall...if you leave the bigger cities you most of the time do not even have Edge (yes kids, slower than 2G) or a mobile network connection at all. So sad!
Cheap hardware in the trains. Actually the modems in the trains are standard 3G modems you may also purchase as mobile hot-spot device. Sure they are a bit more powerful, but they are not made for this special use case: Connection to new base stations in at a high ratio. It actually is a quite hard technical challenge to have a modem do this on a high speed train. But we have 2019 ...thinking about sending people to mars...and as we can see in other countries this problem is apparently solved. Maybe some more money would be good invested here.
But enough ranting about the WIFI in here (that is BTW current non existent)
OK sorry one more thought: Looking around me I see a lot of people in nice suites working on there laptops. Imagine them earning 60€/hour and they need double the time for a task, because the WIFI is so weak. Assuming there are 100 (conservative calculation) of such people on a train. So during this single trip from Berlin to Hamburg (2h) there is 60€ * 100 * 2 = 12 000€ of wasted human capital....better not tell that any company paying their employees the train ride and the "work time" during this trip.

I experience this not the first time, but why am I triggered this time that much, that I decided to write a blog post about this topic? As web developer I am currently working on a live chat project (gramchat.me - please be kind, the landing page would be finished if I actually could work here) where I wanted to finish the landing page & documentation during this trip.
Now I experience myself sitting here and my laptop, normally the device paying my rent, is not more than a dump black box....close to every work flow I have does requires the Internet, I can't work off-line. grrrrr

Backend infrastructure is build on AWS lambda (can't test that offline)

I read mostly blog posts and web articles (via Hackero ;))

Prevent such a situation in the future
So the biggest fail, is me not being prepared for off-line usage of my devices. So what will I do to prevent this in the future? Technical problems need technical solutions:
Entertainment
Music: Have at least some of my favorite playlists available offline
Movies: Actually I see it not as a big problem not binch-watching for some hours => Keeps me focused on working
Get a off-line "read it later" system. A while ago I used wallabag and will reinstall it on all my devices.
Communication
You actually can not do much about it...so nothing to improve here
If you do not have an off-line usable email and messaging client you should get yourself one. (Telegram has a nice desktop standalone) It is nice to at least be able to search trough archived emails/chats
Information
Off-line dictionary it is
Is there a Firefox/Chrome Plugin that save all the web pages I visit to an off-line storage? So that I can go back in my history and access the pages I visited before...if not I might code one.
Development work
There are a lot different off-line code documentation systems. I did choose zeal as it works on Linux and is standalone (the other ones work in the browser and as I most of the time surf in private mode they would not work for me, as I wipe the local storage at least every few days)
Off-line PHP server => Was actually quite easy. Did you know PHP has a build-in server? php -S localhost:8080
AWS lambda offline testing framework? No clue how to this yet...maybe a good topic for another blogpost
There are actually some clients for github with offline issue support. I will give them a try
Cache/save web resources locally. Maybe a good idea overall..better not include Google as dependency in your project as they will abuse that data you send them with every visitor
There is an (sadly old) StackOverflow dump, that could end up in some tool to search trough it...would be amazing. (but maybe will take a lot of disk space)
Oh girl, another thing came up: I have to show my train ticket, wich is a PDF attached to an email...that I never downloaded. What is going on here...my life goes nuts without Internet. Download your important tickets/documents
So overall this trip showed me how depending I am on the Internet and that I should change that. Please see this post as work in progress as I will update and add off-line tools when I get to know them and have more experience with them.
Overall there is one main learning: Download stuff instead of only opening it in the browser. (Same here with my university pdfs...never did download them for offline use, so no research for me no)
If someone was in this situation him or herself and found out other tools that helped I would love if you share them with me, so that I can introduce them into my stack and update this article.
So now I hope that the Edge Internet connection I have on my mobile Hotspot right now will be enough to upload this article :'D

p.S. Another thing I found: Check what applications are using Internet on your machine, so that if you only have low bandwidth this important resource does not get sucked away by an open Skype or so.

American students attend school at least until their teen years, but 15-year-olds ranked 24th out of 29 countries in aptitude for real-life math problems, according to The Washington Post. Literacy surveys suggest one in five American adults is functionally illiterate. And taxpayers keep shelling out money to fund the system. Americans also cherish the right to retire but we expect to be supported in our old age. Younger workers and employers are forced to support retirees, funding another right. I have terrible luck lately. Two weeks ago I totaled my car (my fault) and I have a rental until tomorrow. Rental is from enterprise and paid for thru my car insurance. On my rental agreement I did not list any other drivers, and since it was paid for by my car insurance the guy crossed out the extra insurance and just asked me how much my car insurance deductible is and wrote that down($250). So recently an 18 wheeler ran into the back of my car damaging the whole trunk and the force of the truck pushed my car into a post scraping the side of my car. A look at other modern rights might give us a clue about how well a new system would work. These rights started out as privileges, among them education and a paid retirement. Now education is not only considered a right, its a mandate. How well has it worked? American students attend school at least until their teen years, but 15-year-olds ranked 24th out of 29 countries in aptitude for real-life math problems, according to The Washington Post. Literacy surveys suggest one in five American adults is functionally illiterate. And taxpayers keep shelling out money to fund the system. Americans also cherish the right to retire but we expect to be supported in our old age. Younger workers and employers are forced to support retirees, funding another right. And how well has that worked? The poorly designed, outdated Social Security system is disintegrating rapidly as the number of retirees balloons. But once youve established a right, its difficult to take it away. The government, which promises such rights, must go to its sugar daddy taxpayers to keep the rights coming. She said she creates a small bubble around herself, and focuses on filling it with everything she loves. (Not, like, a literal bubble, btw….I should clarify because it is Bjork.) Nah...but she just focuses on herself and her immediate surroundings, and creates her own world of the things that matter to her... love family music...and does her best to not let the outside awfulness in. Create your own little bubble world. I really liked that. That’s all you can really do these days. What’s important to you? What do you love doing? Cool, create a small bubble and concentrate like a motherfucker on just those things. Tune everything else out. Easier said than done, especially when the outside bullshit is directly affecting your life, but still seems like a pretty good goal for operating in the world today. Work to create your best bubble. 1. Movement Detroit (see you again soon).
Highest of lights was Function wiping clean 90 minutes of my memory at the RA stage under Hart Plaza (went up to him afterwards, looked him directly in the eyes and told him he was number 1. He gave me a head nod. I was content.) Check out his album, ‘Recompiled,’ which was released this year. Respect the master.
Runner Up: Walking into a club at 3am with Eddie while Moodymann dropped the Beastie Boy’s Paul Revere. An entire club of Detroit techno heads went bananas and everyone in the club sang every word. That is what it means to be a good DJ. First time I saw him and it was everything I needed. Played everything from D’angelo, to MK to Ro James...to The Beastie Boys). Talking shit into the mic all night. Doing it all using iPod earbuds. Thank you for being exactly you, Moodymann. (P.S. There was a thing this year where super cool internet DJ chat room people took issue with Moodymann playing Kings of Leon, Sex On Fire, at a festival. You realize you’re criticizing Moodymann right? 1) Fever Ray: Plunge
The Queen Mother returned when we needed her most.
I could write a whole bunch about this but I advise you to instead just read all the interviews she did for this album.
She is revealing and honest.
She is my favorite artist.
And the album’s theme of sexual freedom also made me ok with a sexual fantasy I’ve been having.
It involves Fever Ray and Mike Pence, locked in dark room for 24 hours, with only jars of Trader Joe’s Coconut oil.

2) Honey Dijon: The Best Of Both Worlds
The music genre I was most obsessed with this year was Chicago House. I felt the need to go as deep as I could into the origins and classics...where so much of the music I love today started. Damn. What a time and sound. Deep in the exploration, something was dropped on the very top of the pile. Honey Dijon’s, “The Best Of Both Worlds.” Honey Dijon is a super real DJ vet from Chicago and just created a beautiful album that is just House music to the bone. So quality, sounds so warm and good. Only she could make this. If you’ve never listened to Chicago House (what are you doing with your life, btw?), this is a great starting point. Note to self: I need to see Honey Dijon DJ in the next 3 months.
3) Ellen Allien: Nost
Ellen Allien has never played it safe and has always pushed it, hard. If you really like electronic music you should listen to her earlier albums, namely, Berlinette, Thrills and Orchestra Of Bubbles (collab with Apparat). A pure techno head, who just BRINGS it on this album. A review described it as spending hours in Berghain and that’s a decent description. DARK AND HARD. If you can’t lose your mind in a club for 3 days, you can use this album to pretend you are, while doing things like walking through airports, riding bikes fast, and sitting at your workplace desk. There’s a track on this album named “Mind Journey,” and ALSO a track named “Jack My Ass.” What more do you want people!?

Don’t be a Joe Budden old head. If you say new rap is wack, you ain’t listening...at all. Everyone of these albums has at least 3 absolute bangers. God I love this shit so much. Metro Boomin is producer of the year, again and again. Beats are so fucking hard. Also, for the record, Migos are incredible. The goal of rap is sounding the coolest. 5) LCD: American Dream
There was a generational sea change across the board this year. When Arcade Fire missteps then doesn’t sell out live shows? And they were/are the best band going? What? How fickle are we now (me included)? Things are too fast. We’re getting old. When this album was coming out it made me nervous. I really needed it to be good. Proof of life. They delivered. No crew can bring it like this. They stand alone. And you know what? Getting old is fucking badass. What’s more hardcore? Just keep making stuff and pushing HARD and no one can f with you. There’s really no other way.
6) War On Drugs: A Deeper Understanding
Me. Music for Sunday afternoons. Music for time with great friends and family. For when you’re driving alone in the dark. I love you guys. KP and I saw them live a few months ago. Holy shit. Just 9 really talented and experienced dudes onstage JAM ROCKING. Portland was standing and cheering, I was violently air drumming. Love forever.
7) Four Tet: New Energy
Proves this guy is pushing it forward and on another plateau. He could have just made some quality beats and it would have been satisfying. Instead he made ambient spiritual desert in winter night music. Happy we get to listen to this guy create things.
8) Lil B: Black Ken
When Lil B tweets, he signs every tweet: “-Lil B.”
He also takes a screenshot of every tweet and posts it to Instagram, often times again captioning the post, “-Lil B.”
Earlier this month, he tweeted this:

In the year where women rose up and refused to accept male bullshit, this, fittingly, was the soundtrack. What gets me everytime is that she’s just rapping her ASS off. Also learned that saying “BLOODy shoes” is consistently really fun. ALSO, when she was on Fallon recently she was basically Rosie Perez on Jeopardy in the movie ‘White Men Can’t Jump,’ and that just warmed my entire body. (and....the beat is the beat). Final score: Undeniable.
2. Runner up - LCD Soundsystem: How Do You Sleep?
Hardest diss record of the year! This song sounds like ten thousand angry miles. Or, exactly like 2017! Runner up for lyric of the year: “You warned me about the cocaine, then dove straight in.” He makes you feel all of it. I want to hear this played live.
