Developing My Item's
Now making my poster properly, I needed to write out proper paragraphs for each and every object included thus far, including their link to my design work. I also went out and took / found images to link to each one.
1. Amethyst Necklace
For her 20th Birthday, our third birthday together, I bought me and my girlfriend matching Amethyst and Silver necklaces. We had planned to get some ages back but never got around to it, although they are a new item, the necklaces are very dear to my heart as a symbol of our relationship. Me and my girlfriend are both Designer's at AUT, we work together and inspire one another, this relationship is essential to me as a designer.
2. D20
Since 2017, Year 10, me and my friends have been playing Dungeons and Dragons. I have ran two full campaigns to completion and been in four others. The D20 is a universally recognized symbol of the game that has shaped many of my friendships and supported possibly my favorite hobby. I have done an excessive amount of design work for these games, applying my study's to a function within the real world.
3. Sootie
Sootie is the name given to my childhood teddy bear. I purchased him myself at the age of eight in the Woburn Sands Safari park made of Alpaca fur he is one of the first things I ever bought with my own money. It rests atop my bedside table, and is very dear to me even still. We are not born into this world fully formed, our passions are formed through our childhood, and therefore our childhoods are incredibly important to reflect on in our design.
4. Smoke Machine
My dream is to one day run my very own shop, a one stop party shop and equipment rental store. In May of this year I started working towards this goal with the online launch of The Gear Merchant. We are still very early day’s but since then, this Smoke Machine has been my most purchased product and is fueling my ambition. I have done a large amount of design work for this project, posters, photography, logo's and web design. It is my greatest example of applied design within my recent years.
5. Wheels Keep Turning
My Grandmother on my Fathers side wrote and published an entire book detailing the story of her family, the Whelans. This book is a connection between me and my family history, and teaches me more and more about where I come from every time I read more of it. Our family's shape who we are as people, and to neglect the tie they have to us in our career life is insulting.
6. My Camera
My Camera is not only one of my most valuable possessions, it is also the conduit that enables one of my other passions, Photography. This camera is an essential in my life, as a hobbyist, a student and an artist. This is one of the most important tools to me as a graphic designer, and artist at large.
7. Ski's
Me and my family travel to the slopes of Ruhapahu every chance we get to enjoy skiing together, it is one of a main family events and I love these trips with a passion. These Skii’s not only enable these vacations but are a reminder of vacations gone and memories my family formed together. It is often on these vacations that I get the most of my planning and conceptual work done, a break from hassle and a chance to clear my head.
8. Yard Glass
My 21st Birthday was this year, a milestone achievement and a mark of adulthood, so of course I had to throw a rager. My party was an amazing night for me, featuring many people from my high school, old and new friends, many students in this class, family, and even a friend visiting from England. The Yard glass I downed that night is a reminder of my adulthood, the fact I am no longer a child or teenager and I am no longer just working towards a school project, but a career.
9. VR Headset
Looking forward into the future, I have recently purchased a VR headset which I ave spent far more time using than i’d like to admit. This headset connects me to the VR Space and all the fun, function and freedom that comes with it. I feel it is greatly important as a designer to work with the most recent tools at our disposal, to stay relivent and up to date as the world evolves.
10. Doctor Who DvDs
Doctor Who has been a hyper-fixation of mine ever since I was a young child, I feel glad to have a physical copy of this show that I am an absolute nerd for, and get to use to show my interest to anyone willing to watch it with me. My earliest art projects, and even some now, are related to this show, and my fan art of this show as a child developed many of my skills I use today.
11. Borin Badrian
My girlfriend custom built me a mini-figurine of my main-villain / main-character of my own DnD campaign, and novelisation of the world. I have spent a lot of time with, playing as, and developing this character and new possibilities for him have been stuck in the back of my mind ever since. The written work, and design work I have surrounded this character with has developed my skills greatly, and I owe Borin Badrian for keeping my design fun.
12. Ugandan Mace
While touring Uganda, on a humanitarian project for World Vision, one of the locals gave me this Wooden Mace. It is an authentic piece of Uganda brought back to New Zealand, and connects me to the wider world, a world very different to our own. When we are designers, it is important to reflect on the wider world, and the cultures that surround us, in order to approach a wider audience with respect and dignity.
13. AUT
My University, AUT. AUT was my first choice of University out of all four I considered as I had heard all about their great reputation regarding Design graduates. This university is the cornerstone of my identity as a student, and the foundation of my life as a Designer.
14. My PC
I have a brand new high-powered PC, bought with my Design future in mind. I installed a secondary monitor for extra efficiency and bumped up the RAM and storage compared to my old device. This has increased my comfort and flexibility in my design work, and I can't remember how I ever survived without it!
15. Our Travel Map.
In my formative years, from 7 - 12, I lived in England. During this time we traveled all throughout Europe, and through this experience, I saw the world in a different light. These travels have broadened my perspective on the world, and this map is a reminder of the journeys I went on and the memories I made.

One was the sheer repetition and exact blocking demanded by its formal conceit, the other the Production Code’s blanket ban on “sex perversion,” which meant tiptoeing around the fact that Brandon and Phillip—like their real-life inspirations and, to some degree, Rope’s leading men—were gay. That stringent homophobia forced Hitchcock and Laurents to convey their sexuality through ambiguity and implication; the director would use similar tactics to adapt queer writers like Daphne du Maurier and Patricia Highsmith. (“Hitchcock confessed that he actually enjoyed his negotiations with [Code honcho Joseph] Breen,” notes Thomas Doherty in the book Hollywood’s Censor. “The spirited give-and-take, said Hitchcock, possessed all the thrill of competitive horse trading.”) The nature of the characters’ relationship is hardly subtext: Rope starts with their orgasmic shudder over David’s death, then labored panting after which Brandon pulls out a cigarette and lets in some light. A few minutes later, Brandon strokes the neck of a champagne bottle; Phillip asks how he felt during the act, and he gasps “tremendously exhilarated.”
Like Brandon’s hints about the murder, the homosexuality on display is surprisingly explicit if an audience can decode it. The whole film pivots around their partnership, both criminal and domestic. In an impish bit of conflation, their scheme even stands in for “the love that dare not speak its name,” with David’s body acting as a fetish object in a sexual game no one else can perceive. The guests, as Brandon puts it, are “a dull crew,” “those idiots” who include David’s father and aunt, played by London theater veterans Cedric Hardwicke and Constance Collier. Joan Chandler and Douglas Dick, both a couple years into what would be modest careers, play David’s fiancée Janet and her ex Kenneth. Character actress Edith Evanson appears as housekeeper Mrs. Wilson, a prototype for Thelma Ritter’s Stella in Rear Window, and a top-billed James Stewart is Rupert Cadell, who once mentored the murderers in arcane philosophy.
This was the first of Stewart’s four collaborations with Hitchcock. It cast the actor against type not as a romantic hero but as an observer and provocateur, his gaze shrewd, his dialogue heavy with irony. The role presaged his work in the ‘50s, with Mann rather than Capra, emphasizing psychology over ideology. Rupert, like L.B. Jeffries or Scottie Ferguson, is rooting out a crime, and in so doing comes to seem more loathsome than the villains themselves. “Murder is—or should be—an art,” he lectures midway through Rope, eyebrow arched, martini glass in hand. “Not one of the seven lively perhaps, but an art nevertheless.” Half an hour in real time later, having seen David’s body, he flies into a moralizing monologue: “You’ve given my words a meaning that I never dreamed of!” It takes up the last several minutes of the film, with Rupert snarling from deep in his righteous indignation, “Did you think you were God, Brandon?”
Stewart was a master of sputtering, impassioned oratory, and his facility for it renders Rupert’s hypocrisy especially stark. He taught these murderers; he can’t just shrug off his culpability. The Code decreed that “the sympathy of the audience shall never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, or sin.” Every transgression reaps a punishment. The ending of Rope abides by the letter of this law, as Rupert fires several shots into the night, drawing a police siren toward the building. He sits, deflated, while Phillip plays piano and Brandon has one last drink. But none of David’s loved ones get to excoriate his killers. The one man here with no integrity, no moral authority, is the one who gets the final, self-flagellating word.
The Code forbade throwing sympathy to the side of sin, but if Hitchcock meant any character in Rope as his stand-in, it was Brandon, not Rupert. The top to Phillip’s bottom, he’s the director of the play within a film. He’s storyboarded it to perfection. Janet, realizing he’s toying with her, cries that he’s incapable of just throwing a party. “No, you’d have to add something that appealed to your warped sense of humor!” Hitchcock, who’d built a corpus of corpses, must have gotten a chuckle from that line. Whereas Phillip fears discovery, Brandon puts symbolism above pragmatism, prioritizing what Phillip dubs his “neat little touches.” He needs to have dinner on the chest, the murder weapon tied around antique books, and his surrogate father Rupert in attendance, much as the film’s director needed to shoot in long takes—not because it’s pragmatic, but because it’s beautiful. He went to great lengths for verisimilar beauty here, as Steven Jacobs details in The Wrong House: The Architecture of Alfred Hitchcock. Miniatures in the three-dimensional cyclorama seen through the broad penthouse window were wired and connected to a ‘light organ’ that allowed for the gradual activation of the skyline’s thousands of lights and hundreds of neon signs. Meanwhile, spun-glass clouds were shifted by technicians from right to left during moments when the camera turned away from the window.
Jacobs notes as well that a painting by Fidelio Ponce de León hanging on Brandon and Phillip’s wall actually belonged to the director and had previously hung in his own home. Rope is avant-garde art wrapped in a bourgeois thriller, about avant-garde art wrapped in a dinner party, pushing moral and aesthetic boundaries while collapsing any distinction between the two. In this nested construction, Brandon the murder artist becomes a figure of auto-critique or perhaps apologia. Did you think you were God, Alfred? By 1948, he’d already made dozens of films, often obliquely about sex and violence, across decades and continents. He’d become the world champion sick joke raconteur. Rope is a reckoning with the ethics of his genre.
By 1948, the world had changed. A few years earlier, Hitchcock’s friend (and Rope co-producer) Sidney Bernstein had asked him to advise on a film about Germany’s newly liberated concentration camps. As Kay Gladstone writes in Holocaust and the Moving Image, Hitchcock worried that “tricky editing” would let skeptics read its footage as fraudulent and asked the editors “to use as far as possible long shots and panning shots with no cuts.” The director took his own counsel to heart.
Rope was also his first color film, the start of his fascination with dull palettes. (A quarter-century later he’d limn Frenzy’s London with every shade of beige.) Genteel browns and grays dominate the penthouse, the hues of men’s suits. Only after nightfall does the apartment glow with, in Jacobs’ phrasing, “the expressive possibilities of urban neon light.” The dinner party takes place at the crest of postwar modernity, a world away from the camps. Here, among the East Coast intelligentsia, murder’s merely a thought experiment. When David’s father mentions Hitler, Brandon dismisses him as “a paranoiac savage.” Yet even in polite society, the evening can begin with a secret killing and end with that iniquity brought to light. “Perhaps what is called civilization is hypocrisy,” says Brandon. “Perhaps,” David’s father concedes.
In 1948, the world was changing. That year saw the publication of Gore Vidal’s landmark gay novel The City and the Pillar and the first of the Kinsey Reports. Antonioni was a documentarian about to make his first feature; Truffaut was a delinquent catching Hitchcock movies at the Cinémathèque. Rope’s amorality and pitch-black humor augur a world and a cinema that were yet to come. It’s thorny gay art through a straight auteur. The film’s last thirty seconds show Rupert’s back to the camera while Brandon sips his cocktail and Phillip plays a tune, the trio lit by flashing neon. In this denouement lie decadence and damnation, art and death, the Code-closeted past and a disaffected future.

Personal Project
The Lewis Dresser (working title)
The purpose of this project is to produce 10, A3 Fine Art images on a common theme, “The Lewis Dresser”. (15 types of photography genres to pursue as a professional photographer, 2020)
Creative idea: last year during my NQ I took images for my painting with light project of an old typewriter and an uncooked Plaice on a platter. The latter turned out fairly well, but more importantly it sparked within me an enthusiasm and desire to progress in this medium.
The platter was part of a collection that we had “rescued” from my late father-in-Law’s Croft on the Isle of Lewis before its sale, they have no real value apart from sentimental.
The croft is located near the cliff edge, overlooking the sea and is a beautiful windswept location just a few minutes’ walk from the lighthouse at the end of the Island.
As I have wanted to develop the idea further (I jot down potential ideas for projects in a wee notebook that I carry around with me) I have been considering ways I could do this.
Using the large collection of crockery we brought from the island I propose a series of still-life using a painting with light technique. I want to give it a flavour of the isles and as Lewis is known predominantly for its, fishing, weaving and crofting (The Isle Of Lewis, 2020).
My Initial thought was of limiting it to seafood which I would source through a fishmongers who sell seafood caught from the Loch Fyne area , but in the current climate with shops closing every day, I may have to widen my food sources but keep within the theme of ingredients for traditional Scottish fare. Technique: during this project I want to develop and improve my painting with light technique.
As I said previously It is a medium that I have been interested in since it was first introduced to me in my NQ class and it has always been my intention to develop it, but the briefs this year have been fast and furious and opportunities to explore our own projects have been few .
I have been looking forward to this brief and the chance it offers to pursue my own interests.

Harold Ross

When painting with light my first thought is Harold Ross, I really admire his work. The way he uses light to accentuate the details of his subject creates stunning, surreal photos. Ross uses a variety sizes and softness of light tools to sculpt the images and builds up his photographic images incrementally building layer upon layer in Photoshop. He describes the process as more intuitive than technical and there is a great deal of artistry evident in his work.
This method requires the subject to be shot in a darkened room, the camera should be on timer and tripod mounted (as you are layering the camera needs to remain in a fixed position and at a fixed focal length.) I find it best to focus your subject in auto and once it is fixed, change to manual. If you try to shoot in auto the lens will move in and out of to focus when you paint the light onto your object.
The room needs to be darkened for this to be effective and I intend to shoot in late afternoon or early evening to avoid the “borrowed light” that comes in through the opening near the ceiling of my studio (if I am unable to access my studio I will set aside an area in the flat to work in).
Ross advises that he shoots tethered and this is something I have never done but I would like to add this to my skills set and will research the method further. I have begun accessing online tutorials and been having discussions about this with other Olympus users on the Facebook group I am part of. (Step by Step Tutorial for How to Shoot Tethered, 2020)
Laura Letinsky
(Laura Letinsky → THE DOG AND THE WOLF, 2020)
Letinsky is another photographer that I have come to admire since I began studying photography, I love the way she uses light, and the narrative quality of her work. Her compositions, which at first glance seem haphazard shots of the remnants of hurried meals, abandoned dishes, vestiges of parties, are in fact very carefully arranged.
She uses light to pick out every crease, crumb and fragment within the frame, telling us not only what we see in front of us, but what happened before and what will come after. My earlier shots were very tightly focussed on the subject but perhaps there is scope to pull back and tell a bigger picture.
Mat Collinshaw
(Last Meals on Death Row, Texas - Photo Essays, 2020)
Collinshaw is categorised along with Letinsky, and many notable others, such as Paulette Tavormina and Margriet Smulders, as a photographer who can be defined, at least in his still life, as “Vanitas”. (Still Life Photographers Who Give a Fresh Meaning to Vanitas, 2020). That is that the work either through lighting, content or context leans towards works of the old masters of the Dutch and Flemish painters of the 17th century. Messages such as the transience of life and the beauty of nature were intrinsic in these paintings and strong symbolism was seen in the inclusion of skulls, dead animals or dramatic chiaroscuro lighting.
These traits can be seen in the contemporary work of both Collinshaw, and Letinsky, she with her depictions of dead creatures and decaying food and flowers, he with his slightly voyeuristic look into the thoughts of the condemned man and his deeply dark lit photographs.
There is something slightly morbid about working with a dead creature, particularly in the dark, exploring piece by piece, that I find chilling and it is important to ensure that the beauty of the subject exceeds this, a difficult balance I have found in the past.
Alicide d’Orbigny
(Dance of the Aymara People | Old Book Illustrations, 2020)
D’ Orbigny was neither a photographer nor an artist, he was a French Micro Palaeontologist in the early 19th century. (Alcide Dessalines d' Orbigny | French paleontologist, 2020)
His anatomical illustrations, particularly those of sea creatures are stunning. He not only created biologically accurate depictions but used colours which captured the vibrance and other worldliness that many of these creatures possessed and that caused so many myths to grow up around them.
I came upon one of his images as an illustration in a cookbook that I was gifted and was so struck by the beauty of it that I researched him and found a wealth of beautiful illustrations (sadly my knowledge of palaeontology has made no progress). I cite D’Orbigny as an inspiration for this project as I think painting with light reveals much hidden beauty in subjects such as sea-life and yet retains a realism.
My “ambitious outcome” for this project is that I produce something that is well crafted, beautiful and could be considered fine art. I hope that the images will be finely detailed and that the process through which they are shot adds a dimension to them which cannot be captured in a single shot alone. This is hugely ambitious for one photograph but to produce 10 such images seems unimaginable. It is a very time-consuming process and time is limited but it will be a photography adventure and without doubt a learning experience.
Exhibition
The question “how would I like it to be viewed” is a complex one as ,first and foremost ,this is a personal journey and in a way a homage to the father-in-law I never met but have heard so much of, to his homeland and the place that is held dear in the heart of my husband and his family.
It is also a way of placing a new value on these old and fragile objects imbuing them with fresh life; sentimental and personal.
Alongside this is a need to show progression in my photography skills and my creative ability, both to friends and peers, and finally if the work holds any merit as fine art then I would like to organise a small exhibition.
The campus where my studio is based has an exhibition area which would be ideal for this type of informal exhibition preferably in conjunction with some of my fellow classmates. I have contacted the building’s owner* to check on the viability, the space is freely available to tenants for non-commercial ventures and has dates open for this year. At this stage I haven’t spoken to any of my classmates about it, but I am confident that there would be enough interest to set up a class launch.

I have given some thought on how I think I would display my work; prints sized A3 and mounted will be printed on Hahnemuble German etching, Hahnemuble photo rag ,or Hahnemuble smooth as I want the images to have a fine art textural quality to them and reduce any shine. I like the textures of each of these products but will obviously make a final decision once the images are edited and optimised.
Technically a good knowledge of the camera, use of lens, depth of field and focal point and lighting techniques is essential, as is an understanding of the aesthetics of the technique, my skills in this area are adequate but I hope by the end of this project they will be considerably improved.

This type of shoot is really a solitary activity and, because of current restrictions due to the Corona virus precautions, is one of the main reasons I have chosen this rather than my other plan, I will be able to do it without assistance.

As I have a small studio space it is my intention to work from there, if however the studio has to close for any reason I will relocate to a space in my flat.
I have ordered some online backdrops which may compliment my compositions
I will be visiting the local fishmongers and buying in the foods I plan to shoot, these can be frozen until needed.
I will set up my backdrops and experiment with lighting etc until I am happy with the set up.
From my research it seems that it would be beneficial if I could shoot tethered so I will be researching how to do this while I await feedback on my proposal.
I have a number of Light tools already but I will research this further and add to these.
I will continue to work on my photoshopping skills so that I can get the best possible results from layered images.
As I want the final images to be in the Fine Art genre I will be printing on a Hahnemuble paper, type to be decided.

There isn't anything in the world that can't be found on any street corner, major studio back-lot, dime store, or even the refrigerator of a production office of one of the most popular late night shows on television.
