Subreddits can be a great way of exchanging useful resources, methods, and ask questions about the language you’re learning. But not everyone knows how to easily find one dedicated to their target language/s. So I’ve created a directory of all the ones I could find under this read more.
Note: Whilst there are country-specific subreddits for a lot of these languages, unless they explicitly mentioned accepting language questions I left it out. I also used a subreddit’s list of languages, so please excuse any weird ordering.
If you have an active subreddit dedicated to learning a language/linguistics/translations please let me know and I’ll add it. This includes conlangs! If you think I’ve left out an active subreddit please let me know and I’ll add it!

If you’re new to language learning, you’ve never heard of one or more of the above apps, or you want to know which app would be best for you, consult the guide below.
Also, please be aware, I’ve only used the Spanish courses/units for these apps. Every course/unit differs in quantity and quality. I’d like to think my opinions include the broad spectrum of courses, but not all of them.
I’m also using android, so anything I say about the apps probably only applies to the android app since iOS is sometimes better.
DUOLINGO: Quality above Quantity
Pros: ⭕ Clean Interface ⭕ Totally free ⭕ You feel fine when you see an Ad because of how free everything is ⭕ Duolingo Plus is available and takes away Ads and makes offline courses available for a price ⭕ Speech in some courses ⭕ You can join a club of people, or make your own with your friends ⭕ Streak Saver for if you are too busy to practice but still want to keep a streak ⭕ Good for learning the basics of a language for school ⭕ Good for learning the basics of a language for work ⭕ Very Good as a starting point ⭕ Tips & Notes (Helps with grammar) can be really helpful ⭕ You can contribute to making a course as long as you speak both languages involved ⭕ Forums ⭕ Reminder Notifications ⭕Tinycards (A flashcard app made by Duolingo) is FINALLY ON ANDROID IT IS TIME TO P A R T Y
⭕ I hear Chatbots are good (BUT I WOULDN’T KNOW BECAUSE IT’S NOT ON ANDROID)
Cons:
🔴 Tips & Notes is only on the Website 🔴 Takes a long while for courses because they’re made by contributors 🔴 When a course is quicker than usual it’s usually because Duolingo pushed the contributors to make it and it ends up slightly half-assed 🔴 Duolingo accepts languages based on their demand, so lesser-known languages aren’t normally accepted 🔴 Can’t delete courses through the mobile site 🔴 Chatbots (An AI that talks to you in your target language made by Duolingo) is only available on iOS) (This is because Duolingo hasn’t had an android developer for about 2 years now. So if anybody could please take that job the language community thanks you.) 🔴 If they release a date for something to be out, it’s usually released a lot later than that (TinyCards was due on Android a month or so after it was released on iOS, it finally came out in September 2017)
🔴 So many pop ups like holy shit. I tried using the mobile app and every time you end a course like 3 pop ups for ads, removal of ads, and Duolingo plus comes up. I mean, I know they have to advertise to you after to make money but it doesnt need to remind me that Duolingo plus is a thing every 2 minutes.
All in all, if you’re a student, new to languages, or need to learn a language for work; this is the app for you.
If you’re wanting to expand your vocabulary (outside of casual phrases), you’re intermediate in your target language, or you want to learn grammar; this app isn’t for you.
MEMRISE: Quantity over Quality
Pros: ⭕ Memrise-made courses ⭕ A lot of courses available ⭕ Not just for Languages ⭕ Usually at least 200 words in each Memrise-made course ⭕ A lot of languages available if you don’t care about the quality ⭕ The most words I’ve seen in a course is 2750 ⭕ Good for expanding your vocabulary ⭕ Many lesser-known languages ⭕ Reminder Notifications (Report for training, Dojo!) ⭕ Space themed ⭕ Some community made courses are really good. ⭕ Sound in the Memrise-made courses, sometimes sound in the community made courses ⭕ Anyone can make a course about pretty much anything ⭕ Mems (Pictures to help you remember the word) ⭕ No Ads ⭕ Premium is available and adds courses like Difficult Words (Helps with words you’ve had the most difficulty with), Listening Skills (Helps with listening skills) and Meet the Natives (Videos of native speakers), Chat with AIs in your target language (Only available on some courses), Offline courses, and Grammar bot that helps with grammar (Only available on some courses) for a price ⭕ Okay without Premium ⭕ Good for students and workers ⭕ As long as you know your target languages grammar, you’re set on a Standard account ⭕ Teaches the alphabet along with vocabulary ⭕ Forums
Cons:
🔴 Prices are expensive for people who are broke or can’t pay the $129.99 lifetime fee. 🔴 Not a very clean interface (imo) 🔴 Some people think it’s on the way out 🔴 Some community Courses aren’t that good 🔴 the ratio of Memrise Courses to Community Courses is probably 1:300 🔴 No grammar unless you get premium
🔴 I dont think this is very good for people just starting to learn a new language. Maybe learn a couple words and get used to whatever sentence structure you’re using beforehand.
🔴 (imo) They try too hard to beat out Duolingo. Instead of adding Grammar, Tips, or Comments (On mobile, idk about website) they add interface updates and change things about the home screen.
🔴 They completely changed the mobile set up where you can only choose Memrise courses. The community courses are completely gone from the app. They’re still on the desktop site but its just kind of shitty of them to do that.
All in all, if you want to learn more vocabulary, or you have to learn for school or work; this app is for you.
If you want to learn grammar, need help from others often, or you don’t want a very technical app; this app isn’t for you.
Pretty much if Duolingo and Memrise were computers, Memrise would be PC and Duolingo would be Mac.
Mango Languages: Need to learn grammar? I gotchu fam
I don’t know much about Mango Languages because I only got it recently. From what I’ve seen by answering 2 whole questions on the Android app, this is what I concur.
Pros: ⭕ It highlights each word so you know which is which ⭕ Good for practicing speech ⭕ Teaches Grammar (!!!!!!) ⭕ No Ads ⭕ Many languages ⭕ I think they all have sound ⭕ Special Chapters teach special things depending on the language (i.e. Zodiac chapter for Chinese course etc.) ⭕ Teaches phrases (I wouldn’t like this if it wasn’t for the fact they teach grammar) ⭕ Clean interface ⭕ Seems to be mainly for conversational language. ⭕ Lady narrates everything so you can follow along easily
Cons: 🔴 Your local library pays for a subscription to Mango Languages, which will unlock the website/app for you. This is really bad, because if you live in a small town, or even live in a big town that doesn’t have subscriptions; you have to pay to unlock the site. (Or you can just find a rich library website and see if they publicly give out accounts) 🔴 Doesn’t teach alphabets 🔴 Not a ‘press this button if you think the answer is this’ kind of app. You just go through slides and speak into the app and it tells you if you’re right or not.
All in all, if you want to learn grammar, the skeleton of the language, have another source for learning alphabets, and you have a good library; this app is for you.
If you want to widen your vocabulary, you have a sucky library, no money, and you’re only going to be using this app by itself; this app isn’t for you.
LingoDeer: The new addition to the holy trinity of language learning apps
I also haven’t used this much, but I am planning on it. My review for this will be based on what I’ve heard from other people
Pros:
⭕ Same set up as Duolingo but allegedly better
⭕ Absolutely 0 ads
⭕ Really nice notifications instead of the occasional “The owl has died because you haven’t practiced your language” from Duolingo
⭕ Very simple interface
⭕ Vocabulary and Grammar lessons are available after finishing a few regular lessons
⭕ Has Asian Language courses that are, from what i’ve heard, pretty good
Cons:
🔴 I actually can’t think of any i’ve heard of. Once I do the Spanish course on there i’ll update this with a better review. I just thought I would include LingoDeer because I know a majority of people learning languages on here are learning Asian ones.
If LingoDeer continues on this path, I have a feeling it might surpass the other 3. I can definitely feel Memrise is pretty much down the drain at this point and Duolingo seems to be following it at a fast pace. Mango is kind of just there, I think because not a lot of people know about it or not a lot of people are able to use it because they don’t have a fancy schmancy library. Duolingo has always been known as this totally free app but I can feel the big business grasp slowly tightening its hold.
I suggest using the desktop version of Duolingo, especially if you want to actually read about the grammar of what you’re learning. The app version is fine too, as long as you’re okay with a lot of pop ups after every lesson which kind of interrupt your flow.
I suggest the desktop version of Memrise. The app is kind of awful now. You can still use it, just don’t expect any community language course or rare language courses.
I suggest the app version for Mango, its a lot simpler than just using the desktop site.
LingoDeer only comes in an app, so I guess that solves that.
IMO, it’s best to get all 4.
With Duolingo or LingoDeer helping you with basics, Memrise helping your vocabulary and Mango helping with grammar, you’re set.

How to identify languages
a summary of this article by James Harbeck.
Languages that don’t use the Latin Alphabet (alphabetical order)
Ř, ř: Czech
Å, å: å, ø, and æ = Norwegian or Danish. Danish sometimes uses aa instead of å.
Ð, ð; Þ, þ ø: Faroese. Icelandic is similar but uses ö.
Ő, ő; Ű, ű: Hungarian
Ð, ð; Þ, þ, ö: Icelandic.  ö = öinstead (as in jökull, which means "glacier").
の = Japanese
Ģ, ģ; Ķ, ķ; Ļ, ļ; Ņ, ņ: Latvian
Ł, ł: probably Polish. For further confirmation, look for Ż/ż.
Ã, ã: probably Portuguese, especially if it looks a lot like Spanish
Ă, ă: Romanian (unless you're looking at Vietnamese, but read on for more about that). For further confirmation, look for Ț/ț and Ș/ș (that's T and S with a comma beneath).
ö, å and ä (with crowns, like Swedish royalty) = Swedish.
I, ı; İ, i: Turkish, probably. Also look for ğ.
Vietnamese:  short words, most of its vowels having one or two accents each, so that it looks like someone with a lot of piercings. Here's an example from Wikipedia: Hà Nội là thủ đô của nước Cộng hoà Xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam và cũng là kinh đô của rất nhiều vương triều Việt cổ.
Languages using the Latin Alphabet
Spanish has ñ, unlike French and Italian. (though other languages also use it). Italian has common words è ("is") and e ("and"), which in French are est and et and in Spanish are es and y.
Dutch, German, and Afrikaans: Of these three close relations to English, only German uses Ä/ä, Ö/ö, and Ü/ü. Only Dutch frequently uses ij; Afrikaans uses y in the same places (e.g., Dutch mij and Afrikaans mymean "me"). German for "is" and "and" are ist and und, while in Dutch and Afrikaans they're is and en.
Irish, Scots Gaelic, and Welsh: Welsh is actually quite different from the other two. It uses lots of ll and ff and it uses w as a vowel (e.g., cwm). The two Gaelics (Irish and Scots) are easily identified because both have lots of bh, ch, dh, fh, gh, mh, ph, sh, and th (none of which are pronounced like you probably think they are), and both use accents on vowels, but only Scots uses grave (left-pointing) accents, like on à in Gàidhlig.
Finnish and Estonian: Finnish has long words and lots of double letters (as in moottoripyöräonnettomuus, which means "motorcycle accident"), making it look (and sound) like it's speeding past you. Almost none of it looks related to words you could recognize. If you see a language that looks a lot like Finnish but has words ending in b or g and has the character õ, it's Estonian.
Albanian and Xhosa: These two languages are completely unrelated, sound nothing alike, and are from different continents. But both use xh (as well as c and q) and if you don't know either of them you may be stumped by looking at them. Albanian uses a lot of ë (as in Tiranë, the capital of Albania). A lot. Xhosa does not. (On the other hand, Xhosa and Zulu look very similar, and if you're not sure which you're looking at, maybe just ask someone.)
Languages that are really similar
Croatian and Slovak - just give up on differentiating them.
Serbian, Bulgarian, Belarusian, Ukrainian, and of course Russian all use the Cyrillic alphabet (like русский) . Some Central Asian languages do, as well. Remember: Just because it uses the Cyrillic alphabet doesn't mean it's Russian. (Also, just because a language uses Arabic script doesn't mean it's Arabic. It could be Farsi or Urdu, for instance, neither of which are actually related to Arabic.)
