Do you have any complaints about HP canon, and if so, what are they? For example I know a lot of people really dont like that Draco didnt get a redemption arc, but your work seems to really thrive off of a close reading of canon Draco in a way I think a lot of fanfic just cant because hes like... a very bad person. Its made me wonder if you are very... canon positive? I guess? Or more positive than most, maybe.

I have too many complaints about HP canon to list in an ask, but I can try to list some of them. First I want to say that choosing to use canon to inform your fic has less to do with whether or not you like the canon and more to do with what you like or want from fanfic. If you don’t like that Draco wasn’t redeemed, you can write a fic that posits he is redeemed and so that canon doesn’t have to be dealt with. Or, you can write a fic that shows how he gets redeemed or deals with the fact of his redemption to show what canon could have been. I obviously prefer the latter style, though I respect anyone’s choice to write in the former style. I can’t say I always understand the former style, but I respect the fact that people want to do it and should if that’s what they want.

I will say that I’m not sure I’ve ever written a fic that’s fully canon compliant, and I can’t quite imagine wanting to. Most of my fics a response to canon--they’re about something that wasn’t in canon, that I wish was in canon; or they’re about something that wasn’t in canon, and I don’t want to be in canon, but I still want to be explored. I wish the MCU would actually deal with the responsibility of wielding outsized power of destruction, so I wrote MCU fics. I do not want Schitt’s Creek to deal with the darkness of David Rose’s trauma or past, but I was still interested in it, so I wrote darker SC fic. I love Star Trek TOS, but I want to see Kirk and Spock hook up, so I wrote TOS fic.

There are a few things where I like the canon just the way it is, so I don’t write fic for it. Rainbow Rowell’s Carry On series is just what I want. I don’t need to write fic.

Back to my complaints with HP canon, the major problem I had was a lot of set up without the follow-through I expected or desired. I discussed that in my tumblr posts about Ron and Ginny. The set up of the Harry Potter universe is rather black and white, which I appreciate--it’s easy to get invested; it’s easy to consume. You know who the good guys are right away, and there’s no more complication. LOTR is rather like that, and I love it. But then HP begins to deconstruct its premise--James Potter was good, but he wasn’t kind. Dumbledore was trying to stop Voldemort, but he wasn’t honest. Snape is a horrible person, but he’s trying to do the right thing. This is my favorite sort of story, the one that starts black and white--vampires are evil; the robots will kill us, and the Gems that didn’t rebel are the enemy. Then a vampire earns his soul, or you find out you’re a robot, or--well, actually I didn’t like where Stephen Universe really went with that, but you get the picture. The Harry Potter series began the process of turning its own premise inside out, but somewhere in Halfblood Prince, that got too hard, and things began to snap back to their original shape. Good is good, actually, and bad people will always be bad.

One example of this is the death of Voldemort. Harry is set up as a mirror to Voldemort. Their pasts are very similar. Harry even feels compassion for Voldemort. At several different points, Harry is faced with the fact that he has to kill Voldemort. But Harry never has to deal with killing Voldemort, or with making a decision to spare Voldemort. In the end, Voldemort causes his own end as a result of his own destructive tendencies. This makes me feel that the text is suggesting that Voldemort deserves death. The idea that anyone “deserves” death for bad things they’ve done is not something I believe in or ascribe to. But even if it is the argument the text wants to make--what was the point of showing us that Tom Riddle was lonely, hurt, feared, and probably mistreated? The point really appears to be to show that two boys can have the same background and one turns out good while the other turns out bad, because goodness is inherent to some people while evil is inherent to others. I find this conclusion abhorrent, but I feel the conclusion is ultimately borne out by plenty of other aspects of the HP books.

The other example is Draco’s lack of redemption. I do not think villains have to be redeemed. The world has proven that shitty people can remain shitty. I also appreciate stories that show us the humanity of shitty people. A story about someone who is faced with thier bad choices but continues to make bad choices because they’re too afraid to do otherwise can be a good story. But I guess with Draco, I felt like I saw enough of his inner turmoil to understand why his heart would change, but not a thorough explanation of why it wouldn’t. Combined with many other similar characterizations in HP canon, it just feels like more essentialism--bad people are bad, and that’s how it is. I don’t mean there’s no nuance--as I said, the series does begin to deconstruct its own premise; we even saw how the Trio could be shitty. But ultimately they make the right choices. The characters who make the wrong choices generally continue to make them, except for Snape and Dudley. My complaint with those two representing a change of heart is that we don’t get to see the actual painful process of what that looks like--Snape’s happens pre-canon and there is too little of Dudley to show what is going on in Dudley’s brain.

The last thing I absolutely hate about HP is a lot of the “bad” characters tend to be overweight or unappealing in appearance. It’s true that a lot of this might be Harry’s POV--maybe Snape actually is the sex god some fics make him out to be, and Harry just he’s greasy because he doesn’t like him, and maybe Harry doesn’t like a good hook nose (I do). Additionally, Lockhart is very pretty, and while I want to firmly stress that Draco is never describes as good-looking, he’s not really described as ugly, and I believe Narcissa is even described as beautiful. But the book isn’t written in close third-person Harry POV, and “pointy” isn’t very flattering. Unkind words and stereotypes are used throughout to highlight the badness or evil of almost all the characters we’re not “supposed to” like. The descriptions of the Dursleys in particular are upsetting.

In my opinion, the above examples demonstrate a lack of compassion at the heart of the HP story. That’s what I’ve always hated about it and what always made me want to write about it. I want to write and say, “Look at this. This is fucked up. This is wrong.” Some people don’t read fic for that reason, and I think that’s fine. Plenty of those people really hate my fic, which is also fine. I know that many things in this world lack compassion, and I don’t spend years of my life writing fanfic about them. I think the reason I keep coming back is to me, the premise was unkind--which I was fine with, and then the text itself began to deconstruct itself--which I was overjoyed by. It made me fall in love with the series. But when the premise snapped back to an essentially black and white world, I felt betrayed.

In conclusion, I find HP at its very essence to be unkind. Ursula K Le Guin said it best when she said that it was “ethically rather mean-spirited.”

1. cory and topanga! (boy meets world) my very first thought when given this prompt, theyre the blueprint! they are just BABIEs when they meet and they already Know each other. i will not pretend that topanga didnt shape me into the kind of girl who wouldnt change one thing about herself for a boy, keep your legs hairy and your convictions strong! the way they grow together is enough to make me hate god for not giving ME a cory matthews. high school ski trip infidelity aside, theyre the first couple that made me think i could find a man. i was wrong but its nice to think about.

2. kim possible and ron stoppable... the way the entire series is about kim being a wildly competent type A cheerleader AND teenage vigilante super spy and ron is her chilled out lame best friend who is Always there to help her save the day... please take a moment to listen to the jesse mccartney song why don’t you kiss her? that plays during the romantic climax of the kim possible movie, perfectly capturing the intense fear that comes with thinking about maybe finally kissing your best friend from preschool at your junior prom.

3. tami and coach eric taylor (friday night lights) ...come on, y’all!!!! genuinely the most real relationship i have ever seen on screen. i don’t even know what to say other than that they are REAL. coach and tami are such a good couple that it doesn’t make any sense to me that their kid would have such a massive stick up her ass. i even tried an ‘empathize with julie’ rewatch, and while a lot of her teen angst is understandable and even relatable, she still seems so disconnected from her parents/dillon at the end of the show in a very unsatisfying way! coach and tami are the heart of fnl. and tim riggins.

4. belly conklin and conrad fisher (the summer i turned pretty trilogy by jenny han) bro.... when your mother’s dying wish is for you to care for your little brother, so when he has a little crush on the girl you are In Love With you bury your feelings and go to college far away because nothing is more important than their happiness, and they could be happy together! and years go by and theyre going to get married and youre set on being Happy For Them until you find out how much your brother has actually done to break her heart and her trust and then the thought of her settling for him is even more devastating than your true desire for her to settle for you.... WHEW! when you’ve been busy coming of age and trying to make it work with your best friend that isnt really right for you and then you find out his brother who you’ve been in love with your whole life turned into a distant asshole because the most important person in yalls lives taught him to be selfless and he over-corrected in his grief... BOY!! this one makes me feel like my heart is in my stomach.

5. SENSE8! can i just say all of it? everything and everyone? if you are bisexual and havent watched sense8 yet, this one is for us, baby! the ship is an interconnected web of LOVE AND TRUST. the pairings are endless. if i HAD to choose my fav, wolfgang and kala (and rajan <3) and i cant explain why i would pick them over anyone else, thats just what my pussy told me. but frankly i shouldnt have to choose, THEY ALL SHARE ONE CONSCIOUSNESS! 7. todd and rory (straight up) anna said this post is for romantic ships only and so I CAN AND WILL INCLUDE THEM. i don’t want to give any spoilers because i dont think tumblr has seen this yet, but when i say this is THE romcom of the year, perhaps of my life, trust!! todd is a gay man with a sex aversion who decides to try to date women and rory is the brilliant woman he actually falls in love with. sometimes soulmates dont fuck!!! maybe there are no rules to a good relationship besides mutual respect, understanding, and the undeniable desire to Be Together. i rest my case!

8. drew barrymore and adam sandler is this valid? again i dont know or care. i grew up on adam sandler movies and drew barrymore makes him better every time. they’ve only done 3 movies together, one of which i have not and will not see (2014 is just too cursed to return to) but even tho these two have never been a couple in real life their chemistry is so palpable that they consider each other the person they will grow old with on screen. if that’s not hollywood romance, i dont know what is! sorry to timothy olyphant but even drew says adam is The One.

9. stef and lena adams-foster (the fosters) MOM AND MOMMA! listen, abc family shows are insane, but stef and lena make the drama worthwhile. their house full of teens is not perfect or easy, but never have i ever seen lesbian moms at the center of any media, let alone ones who thrive like they do when they communicate, support each other, and lead with love. this is a couple who chooses each other and their babies over and over again. its about putting in the work, having the tough conversations, and making the hard decisions because you care!!!!!

Hello Anon. I will start this out with saying, it sounds like you’ve been holding this in for a while. If you’re someone I know, even if you’re not, I recommend next time just talking to me. It’s not like I’ll bite you for wanting to discuss things you disagree with me saying? You don’t have to go anonymous to get your point across.

I have never in the history of this fandom said, I ship crenny out of spite. Never have I ever said, I only like crenny because it opposes creek. I love crenny, both the characters individually and together. I love the dynamic, and to insinuate otherwise means you must not know me personally. Yes, I dislike creek. Do I have to like the dynamic? No. Does it matter that its mlm representation, do I have to like it because of that? No. I have my reasons and honestly, that’s my own personal opinion. I can be as loud and quiet as I want to about it. Over time, I’ve come to realize that some spaces aren’t mine, and I’ve stopped going into them. So if you’re judging on past experiences, or going off me having an opinion in my own space, well. Ok?

My opinion is that South Park is a great show and people should watch it. Does it annoy me when people only watch a show for a ship, yes. Because it negates all other character development and people have argued with me and other people about things that, if they’d have watched the show, they’d know. I don’t believe in writing from something without being knowledgeable in the source material. Now, saying that, I have never told someone that they’re not welcome because they haven’t watched the show, I encourage them to watch it. That’s it. I don’t harass people. I’m simply state that it’s a shame they haven’t, and they should. Again, that’s my opinion and I’m welcome to it.

Knowing the difference between canon and fanon is VERY important. People have wars and drama over not knowing things that happen in canon, or believing fanon so hard that they fight people. Like the idea that Craig hates Kenny, that’s f a n o n. He says ONE TIME in passing that he “doesn’t like those guys” and it ignores all the times they’re hanging out together or working together. It builds onto someone’s fanon that then someone who say, hasn’t watched the show, believes and argues that it’s c a n o n. That’s my problem with that. The meth thing is a show thing, I’m not arguing that with you. You wanna debate that Tweek TWEAK was named after ‘Tweakers’ in a saterical show that shows his parents use meth in a coffee that he drinks, that he shows symptoms of, well ok. Don’t do that with me. I’ll keep that as “my interpretation.”

I’ve never said because I study psychology that makes me right about everything. If you knew me, or read what I say, you’d see I often say “this is just my opinion” or “I’m wrong” just like every fricken one else. But being in school and studying these things does help me be more educated in some subjects and if you have a problem with that, I can’t help you. I never tell people they’re ignorant, I’m just stating that I’ve learned about subjects. If the subject was about pharmacy and someone was educated in, pharmacy, I wouldn’t knock them for weighing in. But ONE MORE TIME, I’m not always right. In fact I can be wrong all the time. I can change my mind, I can learn. I never said I was always right, that’s your interpretation of me.

I’m not belittling anyone. In fact, I’ve gotten less vocal about disliking creek in the last months. I’m confused as to why you think I’m judging people’s fan membership cards? I have friends who like creek and I’ve never told them not to. I PERSONALLY DONT. But THEY can like whatever they want. I don’t ask them not to. Jesus. I’m not like, trying to force people out of their ships just because one person, me, dislikes it. News flash, I dislike most ships. But people don’t know that because I don’t talk about it. The only reason we’re having this conversation is because I was vocal, and I was vocal because PEOPLE ARE NOT N I C E and leaving me alone about crenny. I don’t know why you think they are??? We get bullshit and hate from other people in the fandom A L L THE TIME. All the rare pairs do! The fact that you don’t know this or haven’t seen it, doesn’t change that it happens. Someone made a huge post about it months ago. But that’s old hat I guess?

Me? I’m driving new fans away? Okay. You really don’t know me. Im not even going to finish my thought on this one because it’s obvious now.

I didn’t “badmouth” I had a difference of opinion in my own space about it. If you choose to believe what your own headcanon is over something directly talked about in source material, I’m going to disagree. But never once did I go into someone else’s space and harass them, nor did I argue with anyone. I stated my opinion, which I’m allowed to have just as much as you, on my Twitter. You had to have come into my space to see it. Sorry you dont like that, but I wouldn’t call it inconciderate. Telling me I can’t have an opinion, is inconcideate. We can agree to disagree, but I guess in today’s culture, it’s my way or the highway for you guys? We can’t have opposing opinions about a fictional saterical cartoon show.

I am entitled to my own opinions, and if you can’t like me for having them, then that’s your issue. I don’t ask people to like a fake version of me. I’m me, that’s all I can be. If I hurt someone, I am sorry. Come talk to me, tell me how I hurt you, off anon. I will NEVER keep my opinions to myself in my own space. I refuse to be censored because someone came into MY SPACE and didn’t like what they read. Now if it’s in a public area, shared space like discord, we can talk to each other about it civilly. • you would not believe your eyes, if the antichrist grew up to make Fireflies • my favorite scenes were all the ones with the burning car. idk they just made me laugh for that reason you can't describe • but the "lord heal this bike" is my favorite moment probably just... there are no words • oh and "haster." • sunglasses demon sad boy.

• he seems like he enjoys general mischief but when it comes down to like... idk very stereotypical evil thingys™ he's not into it. but still bad boy but just... likeable bad boy who mostly likes to inconvenience people because thats funny. probably would've been generally decent if he wasn't gonna die for it. maybe. • "let's ride off into the stars together like lovers haha jk...unless? actually please im begging you"

• angel food cake is like... sweet but also asshole.

• like idk seems to have a bit of a disconnect (and some sort of "above this" complex but all of those loser angles got that) but like, at least he's not as bad as the rest of the creepy skybox cult. he’d probably be so much better without them. otherwise he's a nice southern pansy. • it made me sad the last time i watched it when i realized that only after he literally gets rejected by the presidential speaker for god does he turn to his best friend like... that gives me so many mixed emotions. ugh :(

• i swear every rewatch my brain keeps flip flopping on whether emo americans dad knew the plan or not and i dont even know why • emo kid has probably so many issues from being sung lullabies about ruling the world like... i just had my sister play a song about someone's funeral and look where i ended up • adams cool enough besides the fact that it must be canon that he ends up making some alternate universe of owl city. british owl city. • i like how he's got that kind of... im not sure how you describe it but he's got this "neutral" expression alot of the time i felt fit the kid who's gonna end everything. • pepper is great. 90% sure she grows up to be a lesbian queen. you go girl. • wednesday is... the fourth day of the week. and a little witch. that is all. • the rest of the them all get some kind of background but apparently according to the narration brian just... exists. • also i love how it's says "always supportive of adam" when he's the first to doubt him and also just *picks up some sort of wooden thing to knock him out* • anathema is cool. i loved all her different dresses. gives me big sister vibes. • did the same actor do both newt and adultery??? • okay they get to bang literally right after they meet but you can't have dumbass immortals hold hands??? bruh >:(

You know what i hate? People hating on others. People hating on someone just because they ship something you dont, just because they like a ship you despise. You hate it? Ok. You feel uncomfortable with it? That's fine! But guys.... Seriously, there's not one fandom i've encountered so far that doesnt have an "abusive" relationship. I have to be honest. It's getting tiring. People just hating on each other and just going triggered for the stupidest things. Recently it's been the feud between Style and Kyman that got me this dissapointed. But, for what i've seen the most, it's from the Style fandom hating on the Kyman fandom. Honestly i ship both of them, i love both of them and really like the art of every artist that works on them. I do not say there is not people from the Kyman fandom hating on Style, but honestly i just keep seeing and reading a lot of hate towards Cartman and Kyman "If a user has Cartman as an URL then obviously they are going to hate on you" "Why even love Cartman at all? Even Satan deserves better" "I used to like your blog but you ship Kyman so I'll unfollow" Guys. Im sorry But i have seen no posts hating on Stan. Saying something about Stan. And I do understand why because Stan is much more nice and less racist and kinder. Yes. But honestly every damn kid in South Park has their issues. Cartman is indeed the one that has made a lot of mistakes and acts in a awful way but..... Eric Cartman has become the main protagonist alongside Kyle of the show. Stan and Kenny sadly do not appear as often or are backround characters. Hell, Cartman is the one that starts all the funny adventures that they have. I do understand if you do not like the character. But even reaching the point of saying that he doesnt even deserve a relationship. He is literally inhuman to you. I do not like Heiman. But it is canon. It happened. I will not hate on Heiman shippers because honestly? Shipping Kyman has brought me a lot of problems with people because how can i? It seems I am not allowed to ship something because you do not like it! And I will not hate on Heiman because of that. We get a LOT of shit. Not even multishipping has saved me of getting those hateful comments. Again... It's ok if you do not like a character. Really. I will not force you to like him. Because i know that no matter how many arguments i give i cannot change your mind because in the end you are a human being and its NATURAL to differ in a lot of things. But.... I expect the same from you. I know that probably I'm going to get a lot of hate from a lot of South Park fans, but I honestly don't care. I will still love Style and hope for a scene with the two best friends together. I will still love Kyman and enjoy this new season that had a lot of Kyman moments. I will still love K2 and Bunny and hope for Kenny to make a damn appearance some day. I will still love Creek with all my heart and squeal when they appear together. I will still love them. And I will respect others if they do not feel the same. Thank you. Have a nice day and I hope that i did not ruined it just because of my post. ❤
