[OOC] Some Christmassy self-reflection.

There is a saying in the native language of my home country that roughly translates "We're all better people on Christmas". It's a phrase that always made me sick in the stomach. And not because we should be on our best behavior all year round, but because it implies that people who behave their best on Christmas KNOW how to be a good person and thus CHOOSES to not be that way during the rest of the year. They choose to let emotions get the better of them, to be ruled by their struggles, their fears and pain. And when we're hurting, because we'd like to be happier, because what we have is not enough, we feel in the right to forgive and overlook some of our worst behaviors. And so we become worse people than what we could be. And when the next upsetting thing comes around, we get even worse. And so on until we plain suck.

Man, unlike most animals, is capable of introspection, of thinking about what they do, of what is the best way to act. Cats don't mull over their mistakes nor wonder of what could have been had they behaved differently. Fish don't wonder whether other fish would like them better if they had longer fins. As human beings, we have the privilege of self-improvement if we want it, of resisting our instincts. And most importantly, controlling our hurt.

If you look around, through and deep inside other people, you will discover that everybody hurts. Even now, as you smile at your parents while ignoring that huge thorn throbbing in your side, remember that those people smiling back also have their own thorns. To believe you are the only one hurting is the quintessence of narcissism. This is why we must not let our best behavior depend on our suffering, but rather let that very suffering shape our good nature.

Only then, as Dickens once wrote, we'll be able to make it Christmas all year round.

Do you ever have a problem with figuring out what day you want to post your writing or you just choose whatever day you feel like it?

I don't have specific days that I post. Whatever days I put the finishing touches on a story is typically when I post it. I never tried to come up with a schedule because I know I'd never be able to stick to it - my creativity doesn't necessarily work like that.

When the words flow, they flow. And when they don't, they sadly just don't.
