Writing a college choice chapter and I just got walloped with the memory of my dad making an absurdly detailed spreadsheet with like 4 separate sheets to help me choose which college to go to. The apple does not fall far from the tree.
...but this apple still managed to choose the wrong college.
#I didn't even apply to the state school I ended up transferring to and loving#My guidance counselor made the state school I ended up loving seem like a dumbass school#Bitch I coulda gotten a full scholarship to go there had I applied in the first place!!! Why didn't you encourage me!!#They all knew I was in a 6 month long dissociative state during college shit#WHY DID NOBODY EXPLICITLY TELL ME KSC WAS A GOOD IDEA#Fun fact every time I write a high school AU#It's my attempt to relive my senior year without the trauma and the Extremely Bad Shit and the 6 months of dissociation#So that's why most of my HS AUs are fluffy fun with some angst thrown in#Because my senior year was mostly trauma and angst (it was So Bad) with a little fluffy fun. Prom was great#Anyway this post is to show that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree#Mom wanted me at the elite private school Dad wanted me to Just Choose A School Oh My God Sara#And I wanted to go somewhere with my friends#None of us got what we wanted#I chose UConn while high on NyQuil and I really think someone should have questioned that#Mom? Dad? Anybody?#Come on#Anyway#This turned into an essay#If you reach here send me a song lyric and a pairing and I shall fluff in thanks#Oh Daddums#Also my mom opened like 4 of my college letters without me then burst into my classroom while I was teaching to tell me#Still annoyed about that#'You got waitlisted at your dream school!!' 'COOL THAT'S BAD NEWS IT COULD HAVE WAITED UNTIL I WASN'T TEACHING????'

Venting here because tumblr is definitely the "yell into the void" website.
For some reference, I'm a teacher. I started as an EA during the 21-22 school year and worked pretty well with the kids. Both administration and the special education department approached mh mother (we work at the same school) to ask if I'd ever thought about getting a bachelor's degree. They found out I already had one and switched to asking me if I'd thought about becoming a teacher.
For the most part I resisted, I don't like change and I was enjoying being an EA and had less responsibility than a teacher. During winter break one of the special education teacher quit. The school couldn't find a replacement so the teachers were offered a $5000 payout to give up their prep period and help cover that class. They still ended up with 2 periods uncovered (middle school so switching classrooms), and I offered to take those over. All of my students improved. Over half of them (I had 15 at the time) qualified to join general education classrooms. I enjoyed it and the students learned a lot.
That made me decide to actually become a teacher and I started the classes that summer. In my state, starring those classes qualifies you for an Intern Teaching License, or an Alternative License depending on the route you took. Each of those immediately qualifies you to take over a class full time while you are going to school. 4 of the teachers at the school I am at are currently doing that: they have their alternatives and are running classrooms all day, every day, they are full teachers.
Continuing, for the 22-23 school year, originally I had been told that if I get into my classes and get my teaching license, that special ed math class was lined up for me. Someone else applied and got the job while I was getting my school stuff set up. Because of that I got bumped to intern teacher, so I was basically an on site substitute. Right before the school year started, one of the math teachers quit. I was put in their spot with the implication that this position would be my job. Awesome, a teaching position in the field I love. Unfortunately for me, 9 weeks into the semester I found out I'd been listed as the sub not the teacher, so when the district had a forced transfer in the math department guess whose position they got.
Alright, fine, back to being a glorified substitute. Spent 6 weeks as a long term sub for 6th grade math around winter time, got them ahead and some of their grades started improving. Teacher came back and I was back to wandering. Outside of that, i became the first person contacted for math tutoring. I ran an after school math tutoring session, and the coincilors and social workers called for me regularly to help their struggling students. At the end of the 22-23 school year two math positions opened up at my school.
I applied for both and got interviewed for one. Administration told me one of my interview questions wasn't what they were looking for so they went with someone else but would keep me in mind for other math positions. I was also told that my interview went well enough that they shouldn't have to interview me again, they could use what they had to see if I'd work. Awesome. I didn't get the other math position either. It was implied to my mother later that they could only hire so many teachers on the alternative/intern license, and at the time we already had 2.
This did upset me a bit so I talked to my union representative to try to get my thoughts straight. The school had a math teacher, on site, who just needed a classroom and was passed over twice. He said it was probably related to the fact that I was new and I was still waiting for paperwork on my math endorsement to go through; he figured they went with someone who had it versus someone who had about two more weeks before it was properly added for me. Alright, I have a business degree, I can understand that. Even if the application flat out says that you were good for the position as long as you could be certified within 90 days of the 23-24 school year starting.
Over summer, one of those new math teachers had to withdraw and the position opened up again. I applied again; this time I had my math certificafion and held a 4.0 across two different teaching certifications (special ed and Gen Ed, it is not recommended you do both and most people fail out and have to pick one). I had the thing I was missing and was ready to go. It was implied (again) that I wasn't getting the position because of the type of certification I had.
At the same time, they hired two more teachers who just stared the alternative license stuff that I have. They literally took their first classes this summer, while I am a semester away from completing the program and getting the full license.
And I didn't get the math position. Rumor is the guy who got it has no teaching experience at all. That is all I have heard about the dude. Meanwhile I am being asked if I'll be helping with tutoring again and not getting a classroom.
I hate to say it, but I feel targeted and like admin isn't being honest with me. I think something else is going on and it is frustrating and exhausting to be pushed around like this. To be used as one of the primary people for students struggling in math, to constantly be told that I relate to students well and can break down information, and then not be given the chance to actually teach. I'm frustrated and sick of it.

My childhood so far.
Tumblr media
My childhood was rather interesting. Even though I don't feel as if it has ended. Going through elementary was an arduous task for me because I was a fool who sought attention to achieve friendship and respect at any cost. I couldn't stand being alone and watching others have friend groups and planned activities. Whenever I received bad grades, I would get physically beaten upon arriving home. There would be times where I would hide within my house from my parents to cause delay from conflict. Even though I would be reprimanded over my poor performance, it only helped me improve ever slightly. Through my middle school years, I've tried to form lasting relationships with others which didn't always work. Whether it would be through impression or simply making others laugh by causing trouble. I would be ridiculed for my eyes often which led me to walk through upper floor hallways with my head down, because I took my physical appearance personally because I've never knew why I didn't feel comfortable with my existence at a young age. I don't remember how long it took but eventually one of the school staff had told me to keep my head up as I walked. Not knowing why, it would matter so much to keep my head up at the time, I instinctively did as I was told. I may have not known then, but maybe I felt a sense of hope materializing inside me. During break periods or whenever I had the chance to go to the restroom, I was cautious of where I was going. By doing this I would avoid unnecessary bathroom fights when I only wanted to use the restroom. Fortunately, I was able to make childhood friends with two twins, which led to my childhood life feeling better than it was before. During my childhood I was placed into Boy Scouts of America with a group of boys several years younger than me, which made me feel out of place. This addition in my life reminded me again from how I've tried to fit in with people I couldn't connect with in my school life which made my social life feel meaningless. Despite my social interactions with other younger scouts, I had a challenging time associating with, I've gained unique skills pertaining to woodcraft, rope tying, survival preparation, and cooking. I was able to experience these things half the time with my father, since our group was small, and our activities leaned towards nature, enjoyment, and education of forest preserves indigenous and non-indigenous. Despite not making long-lasting bonds, I've taken years' worth of experience I've learned as a boy scout and continue to apply what I've learned to my personal life for a better day and a bright future. Into my last year of Middle school, I cannot properly recall, but I've lost my in-person friendship with my twin best friends due to their transfer after a while. Shortly after I became reacquainted with them for my first and 2nd year of high school briefly, before their family had a change of plans and moved across the states. Going back to my last year of middle school after the departure of my friends, I felt like I was alone once again and craved a sense of belonging which I didn't receive much during my last year. In turn, this led me to carry my old habits into my high school transition. Despite this, I still remember my teachers and staff for showing me the loving care and guidance which has brought me here through education. Even with fearfulness and awkwardness I still felt the joy and passion from being able to enjoy recess, books and school planned activities in spite of the odds.

I Have Elected to Ignore Midnight's Death
Polarmare's First Day
It was the first year Kenta would be teaching at U.A. A longtime friend of hers requested to take up the open teaching position, and who was Polarmare going to deny a change of scenery?
Besides, her sister lived in Japan and was elated to know that the Fuyuhito sisters were getting back together so that was the housing situation solved in under five minutes.
U.A. paid good as well which was good for a single mother like Kenta. She adored Seko with all her heart from the first time they met in Japan two years ago when she saved him from prison. Sure the paperwork was a bitch, but Seko loved the opportunity to meet so many different heroes.
So they packed their bags, and headed off to Japan where she was reunited with her sister.
The day after they arrived she made sure her paperwork was sorted by the Hero Safety Commission, then made sure to pick up Seko for her tour at UA.
There she met Nezu, who seemed just as crazy has he had been over the phone and her fellow coworkers.
She took an instant liking to Powerloader and Snipe as they bonded over creating weapons. Vlad King and Ectoplasm seemed chill too, and it was nice to see other dedicated teachers.
Midnight was cheering about another woman on the staff, though seemed to deflate when Kenta snipped her sexual flirting at the bud.
Present Mic was loud, but reminded Kenta of a friend in America so the familiarity was nice.
It was interesting meeting All Might after seeing his last stand on the news, but Kenta hoped they would be able to get along even if he seemed like a bumbling mess half of the time.
Recovery Girl was alright, a bit jaded but it was hard to find a hero so old who wasn't.
Aizawa seemed like someone she needed to keep her eye on, his knee jerk reaction upon learning she was an international hero was hostility while he worked under the impression she was a spotlight hero.
With a swing of her axe, and a clarification of the fact she was a Neighborhood Hero who worked mostly under Rescue and Underground terms, he simmered down real quick.
The General Ed teachers seemed chill, and Kenta hoped she would be able to grab some drinks with them after a long day of work.
Seko loved every one of the them, and was excited by the prospect of their quirks though Kenta made sure to cover his eyes and ears whenever Midnight was in the room.
After final arrangements with Nezu, she was given the dates of the entrance exams. The Fuyuhito family left in good spirits.
The day of the Management Entrance Exam came around, and Kenta came in her formal hero uniform. She took a seat beside Snipe and Powerloader, and was introduced as Polarmare.
Polarmare watched as potential students came in to present one by one, and she made notes. At the end of the day after helping the potential support students present Polarmare was happy with her picks.
It wasn't over though as she spent a while in her new office she looked at each students history, made a few calls, and at the end picked out a good sixty for the first years.
Sixty may seem extreme, but there were many parts of management and business so they wouldn't all be in one class.
She went home to tend to her son, and went to see the sights with her family.
The day of the hero entrance exams arrived, and Polarmare took a seat in the viewing room. She studied the motions of the potential students, their interactions, and was pleasantly surprised to see Nezu took her suggestion of making Rescue Points public and hiding a new type of points known as Cooperation Points.
The big scale robot had been toned down a bit, and at the end Polarmare had a few qualms but didn't have any outward complaints.
Eventually, the first day of the school year came around and Polarmare did her introductory presentation. She explained each branch of management and business, the schedules, and sent them on a tour with Snipe of the business building.
While that occured, she had a meeting with the votes on representatives and outlined what she expected of each of them. She was pleasantly surprised to find them ready to meet the challenge, and was off once again.
She let the students spend the first week exploring the changes she made, and getting used the renovated building. She didn't see the need to challenge them too much considering they were in a new environment.
At the end of the day, Polarmare made her way to the Conference Room and took her place. The first thing she noticed was a lack of Gen Ed teachers present, which concerned her.
Snipe and Powerloader seemed surprised to see her there, and it was Snipe who leaned over.
"The Management teacher usually doesn't come to these meetings as they center primarily around the hero course."
Polarmare took in the words before responding, "Business and Management is a huge part of heroics so I believe I should be present for any meetings regarding the Hero Course."
Snipe nodded, and straightened back up.
Tumblr media
After a couple more looks, the rest of the teachers settled down to prepare the meeting.
Nezu got up on his little podium, and smiled. "Welcome to the first hero course meeting of the year. Since we have a new teacher with us this year, I would love to hear her thoughts on how she plans on interacting with the hero course."
"First, may I record the meeting?" Polarmare asked. "I work better if I have audio to listen to afterwards."
A few of the teachers gave each other looks, but Nezu nodded.
Polarmare tapped her recorder before she stood up. "I plan on calling the second year students to the business building to discuss their media presence. With permission from you and their gaurdians, I want to make sure they have profiles set up on Hero Watch. It would be good for them to interact with other heroes, and it will open internship and work study opportunities for them."
Nezu hummed, "Permission granted, you may start as soon as you can."
"Once I get their gaurdains approval," Polarmare resaid with a firm stare. "I shall send out the email tonight, and set up conferences if needed."
Polarmare noticed some of the teachers looking at her in confusion, but she made her notes.
The rest of the teachers went around, and Polarmare made her notes. Admittedly more on their body language then what they have to say.
The last person to talk was Aizawa. He stood up and gathered a couple of papers.
"All of the expulsion forms have been filled out." Aizawa passed them around towards Nezu.
Polarmare slammed down her hand before they could be passed the final length. She turned them over to look through them.
"Polarmare, may I ask what you are doing?" Aizawa asked through gritted teeth.
"You know Eraserhead, this seems quite light for expulsion papers. I see a distinct lack of reference to any evidence or record of you meeting with the student to discuss the expulsion."
"What are you talking about?" Aizawa asked.
"According to the Student Rights, the student should be made aware of their expulsion with any evidence before they are expelled." Polarmare looked over to Aizawa, "I assume this is the first time Nezu has seen these, so I also assume he has been expelling students based on your word without a meeting or evidence."
Aizawa stared Polarmare down, "U.A. does not work on the regular rules schools are legally allowed to abide by."
Polarmare shifted the papers in her hand, "Actually, Student Rights apply to all schools. If this is the case, and you have been expelling like this, it is a miracle you haven't been sued."
"Nezu handles the lawsuits," Snipe said.
"Ah, that explains that. Let me clarify, it is a miracle that someone who outranks you hasn't caught on and sued you." Polarmare adjusted her posture, "Now what is your reasoning?"
"The students show a lack of potential," Aizawa stated matter of factly.
Polarmare raised an eyebrow, and waved her hand. "And?"
"What more is there to say?"
Polarmare sighed deeply. "Tell me Eraserhead, how do you measure a concept as abstract as 'Potential'."
"A series of trials," Aizawa stated.
"Yeah, I saw those trials being performed. I noticed that they are all physical. Are you saying you are measuring potential on how physically experienced your students are?"
Midnight giggled.
Polarmare shot a glare before turning back to Aizawa, "I am going to look through these students and read out loud their quirks."
"This is uneccesary-"
"Marinette, this quirk allows the user to control those with human intelligence or faux human intelligence like robots as though they are simply puppets. Hmm, I don't see how this could apply to something like a grip test or ball throw. Though this could be a way to give heroes confidence or maybe even to control villains. This student sounds like a great Underground or Neighborhood Hero if they so desired.
"That is only-"
"Oh! Gnaw. This one is interesting. This quirk gives the user sharp appendages as long as they are made out of keratin on some level. Can't think of how this would help a sit-up, but imagine there was a super strong net that could be useful. This student sounds like an amazing Rescue Hero if they so desired."
"Two-"
"Slowdown, a quirk that allows the user to slow down anything that is moving. That is amazing on its own, and if they know how to dismantle robots in the time allowed they have to be some sort of mechanical genius! They could go down any hero path they wanted and he so successful. A shame I can't think of how this would help on any trials unless they were sabotaging others. Were they sabotaging others?"
"No," Aizawa said.
"This is a bad trend Eraserhead," Polarmare warned. "Of course if you insist on wanting to expell them, then why don't you allow me work out some private study transfers. I know what, like five? Ten? Twenty? Probably like something hundred pros who are on the waiting list that would love to work with some of these quirks."
Aizawa glared at her.
"Then again why is there such a focus on their quirks? Oh! I know, it is because you don't care how they act if Mineta and Bakugou is anything to go by." Polarmare said. "Don't think I've noticed the large amount of tapes and complaints filled out regarding them."
Polarmare looked up at Aizawa, "I'm just saying there is some good evidence here to create a good quirk discrimination and abuse of power case. Unfortunately for you, I happen to be friends with a lot of lawyers and reporters who don't exactly love UA and would love to get their hands on this information."
"Nezu!" Aizawa shouted.
Nezu who was blankly smiling throughout the whole exchange looked at Aizawa. "What? She has a point, and we can not take another hit like this to our reputation. Polarmare you have permission to disband the expulsions."
"Thank you."
"Oh shit," Present Mic muttered but it was audible due to the complete silence of the room."
"With that, I believe this meeting shall be adjourned. I employ you all to spend some times to reevaluate your students."
Tumblr media
Polarmare collected her notes, and looked over the expulsion sheets. She wasn't lying before, she was sure she could find some good mentors for these students depending on what they want to do. She'll have to add those meetings to her calendar. Maybe Seko had some ideas, and her sister would probably snatch up one of th-
Something ling and grey wrapped around her mid section, and she didn't have to turn around to know who it was.
"Eraserhead, what do I owe the pleasure?" She turned her head to see his eyes aflame with red.
"I have been managing my class like this for years, and I do not appreciate you coming in here and dictating what I can and can not do."
"I do not dictate it, the law does." Polarmare sighed as she looked at his eyes. "Cancelling my quirk is useless considering it isn't and offensive quirk," She pointed out.
Aizawa let his capture scarf wrap back around his neck as he blinked. He stared at her with narrowed eyes.
"Bakugou is a perfectly fine student, and I do not see why you brought him up-"
"The boy has a record of telling people to die, I don't care if it is his thing it fucks with your head. Not to mention the physical assault and berating he does, because unlike you I read the complaints."
"The complaints are useless, I judge my students without any prior knowledge."
Polarmare raised an eyebrow, "Does that include background checks because I thought UA prided themselves on those."
Aizawa gritted his teeth.
"If that is all, I need to get home to my family."

Boston Burning Part Three
In Your Orbit
Summary: Chris takes Nika with him to the station during his next shift, there she's introduced to the latest transfer from Austin, Texas—Arden Daniels. A simple question from an outside perspective brings out an overdue confession in a roundabout way.
Warnings: cheesiness, flirting, Chris Evans absolutely doting on Nika Stan (yes it absolutely needs its own warning lol)
Word Count: 2770
A/N: This fic will feature a lot of implied signed dialogue, as two of the characters are a part of the Deaf Community. Dialogue expressed in ASL (American Sign Language) will appear in bold and italics preceded or followed by the proper indicators. Unless otherwise stated, regularly spoken dialogue will be used for interpretation purposes for characters who do not sign when mixed in with signed dialogue. As I, myself, am part of the Deaf Community and wanted to bring a character to the table that represented my own experience with my deafness, I DO NOT speak for all d/Deaf/HoH individuals nor the Community as a whole. I am but one person, these are MY OWN experiences. Happy reading!
Tumblr media
"Are you sure you want to come to the Station with me tonight?" Chris asked, poking his head into the bathroom as he and Nika got ready to go.
"For the last time, Evans, I'm going. I'm not sitting around here waiting for shift to be over," Nika said, applying a small amount of antibiotic burn cream over her skin.
He put his hands up in surrender, leaning against the doorframe. He wouldn't offer to help her unless she indicated that she needed him to. "Alright, alright. I'll quit asking. I just want to make sure you're as ready to see everyone as they are to see you."
"Chris," she paused, looking over her shoulder, "I'll be fine, I promise. I'll take it easy and I'll let you or Lizzie or Scar know if I need to come home. Now, can you help me with my shoulder?"
Chris nodded and accepted the tube. He took his place behind her and moved her hair to the side revealing the wound on her shoulder to him. He gingerly rubbed a thin film of cream over the healing blisters. "It's looking better already."
Nika scoffed. She'd never really taken the time to look at herself in the mirror before, never really felt the need to. Since the fire, all she did was stare at her reflection.
"Hey," Chris said softly, "you're still just as beautiful now as you were before."
"Are you flirting with me, Evans?"
"Depends, is it working?"
"Maybe."
The two continued to stare at each other in the mirror; Chris's fingers idly glided over the rough skin of Nika's scar tissue. She watched intrigued as he leaned into his own touch of her skin instead of pulling away repulsed by the feeling as she would have been. Chris was good to her, too good, in ways Nika felt she hadn't earned.
As if he'd read her mind, he turned her around to face him, lifting her chin to look into her eyes. The pad of his thumb gently brushed over her cheek. Stop that. You don't need to earn my attention or my affection or my care.
Why are you so good to me? How can you just give me that much of your time so easily? Nika questioned, her hands moved furiously to highlight her frustration. Try as she might, she couldn't understand what he saw in her — more so now, thanks to the scarring left behind by the fire.
Chris understood that Nika's confidence had been shaken, he understood that she didn't see herself as she once had. It's simple, Nik. You're my best friend, it's yours if you want it.
Tumblr media
The drive to the firehouse was quiet. Nika left her hearing aids at home, not wanting to burden herself with attempting to follow so many conversations. Chris was there to interpret for anyone who didn't sign, giving her a much needed break.
Chris pulled up outside of the station and looked over at Nika. He waited patiently for her to make a move or a sound or any indication that she was ready to go in. She sat still as a stone, amber eyes fixed on the brick and mortar building in front of them. Chris softly tapped her left knee with his right hand, grabbing her attention. You ok? Nervous?
Nika shook her head. No, not nervous. Indifferent.
We don't have to go in. We can go home. Whatever you want to do.
I want to go.
Then we go. Chris reached across the seat and grabbed Nika's hand. He slid his fingers through the spaces between hers, giving her palm a gentle squeeze. The soft look in his eyes was warm and calming, exactly as it had been in the mirror. He slowly brought their hands up to his mouth, softly brushed his lips over their tangled fingers, skimming her knuckles. Ready?
Nika answered with a small nod of her head, her eyes still trained on the spot where Chris's lips had touched her skin. His affection wasn't new to her, except the way in which it was being delivered. She communicated with her hands, and to have him now showing deeper levels of care to her with his own… Chris's touch was everything.
The passenger door opened to reveal Chris standing at her side, waiting to escort her into the station. His bright blue eyes found her smooth honey gaze, and a sense of ease washed over them both.
She took his hand when offered, smiling as she hopped out of the truck. Who is here tonight?
That you know? Scarlett, Lizzie, Scott, and myself.
Do they know about the fire?
Scott knows, he was with me when Seb called. Everyone else will know only if you want them to. Chris smiled reassuringly. He knew seeing everyone under the current circumstances would be a lot for her, but he hoped having at least him and his brother there would take some of the pressure off. The Evans brothers were good for interpreting, Elizabeth and Scarlett knew enough conversational signs, and Nika could get by fairly well on her own otherwise.
The warmth of the summer evening relaxed both Chris and Nika's nerves. He hummed softly as she leaned into the protective barrier his body offered, shielding her right side from further damage. He hadn't been there to protect her from the fire that had caused the initial injury, but he'd make sure no more harm came to her during her stay in Boston.
She tugged on his arm as they approached the firehouse and nodded toward the opened shutter doors of the apparatus bay where Scott was waiting for them.
Hey, Scotty. Long time, no see. Nika greeted the younger Evans brother, stepping away from Chris's side and giving Scott a hug.
Hey, Trouble. Glad to see you're up and moving. How's the arm?
Can't wait to get this cast off. I'm already tired of it and it's only been a week.
Scott chuckled, greeted his brother with a nod and quick hug of his own. "Chris, you two doing alright? Need anything?"
"No, Scott. We're good. Thanks," the older Evans answered. He adjusted Nika's backpack over his shoulder and watched her slip into a comfortable conversation with Scott. The brothers had been friends with Sebastian and Nika since the four of them were in grade school; when the Evans' family moved back to Boston when the boys were in middle school, every so often Chris and Scott or Nika and Sebastian would spend a weekend with their respective second family. Nothing could tear the bond they had apart.
As they got older, Chris grew closer with both of the Stan siblings while Scott branched out and made friends of his own. He still kept in touch, not as closely as his big brother had but enough to keep the bond with them alive.
Chris's brief trip down memory lane ended abruptly, when a surprised yet happy squeal from Nika met his ears. He turned to find her sprinting through the apparatus bay toward the back of the rigs, Elizabeth's brunette hair fanning out behind her as the two spun around in a reunited embrace. He caught up to them in time to see the sling slip from Nika's arm in all of the excitement.
He tapped her left shoulder and gestured to her right arm. Hey, careful! You're not 100% yet, Nik.
Whoops. Nice catch. Thanks, Cap. she blushed, biting at her lower lip as Chris helped her slip the sling back into place. She did her best to ignore the heat rising in her cheeks at the soft kiss he pressed into the side of her hair.
How long are you here? Elizabeth asked, drawing Nika's attention away from the Squad Captain.
Off duty until my wrist and burns heal, so I guess we'll see. Definitely long enough for girls night!
That's what I like to hear!
The girls erupted into a fit of giggles. Nika hadn't been back in Boston since her breakup three years prior; a nasty one that only Chris and Elizabeth knew the explicit details of. Girls nights had been out in hold in favor of the time and space she needed to work through what happened.
Chris carefully guided a happy and preoccupied Nika to the locker room, followed by Elizabeth, as the two desperately made plans for a much needed wine and gossip night. He knew better than to interrupt.
After depositing his and Nika's things into his locker, Chris finally decided he'd take a chance pulling her away from the party planning for a bit. He found the two friends huddled in a corner of the common area, chatting animatedly over two mugs of fresh coffee. Elizabeth alerted Nika to Chris approaching her from behind and she turned around with a warm smile.
Hey, what's up?
Not much. How's your arm?
Ok, a little sore. Lizzie and I are planning Girls Night.
Chris chuckled. He loved the way Nika's eyes lit up whenever she mentioned plans with their other friends, especially Elizabeth. The two of them were almost as inseparable as Chris and Elizabeth were, and he knew that whenever he couldn't be around for her, Elizabeth would be. He nodded at the brunette and gestured toward the offices.
Mind if I borrow Nik for a moment? There's someone I want you to meet.
Not at all, I need to find Scarlett anyway. I'll see you later. Elizabeth waved them off and went in search of the other paramedic.
So, who am I meeting? Nika asked, following Chris to his office. It'd been three years since she'd stepped foot in that small room, three years since she's been in Boston at all but it still looked exactly as she remembered.
Latest Squad transfer. I think you'll like her, he answered simply. He set her purse on his desk and led her back out to the apparatus bay.
As they rounded the corner, Nika noticed the woman across the bay next to the Squad rig who hadn't been there when they'd arrived. She had wavy chestnut brown hair about as long as Nika's and stood a couple inches shorter than Sebastian. From the back, she could be his twin—a thought that thoroughly disturbed the younger Stan sibling. As the woman turned, Nika noticed the glint of the lights off of something in her hair and squinted, trying to make out what it was.
What was that flash of light in her hair? she asked, pulling Chris to a stop before they approached.
Just go meet her. Please? For me? he said. He reached forward and gently touched her left shoulder, rubbing it reassuringly and tugging her forward with him. "Hey, Daniels. You got a moment?"
The woman paused her inspection of the Squad apparatus, and turned in the direction of Chris's voice. The light caught the strange piece in her hair and now that they'd moved closer, Nika recognized it as a cochlear implant.
"What can I do for you, Captain?" The woman's eyes shifted from her superior over to the younger woman standing next to him. She gave her a polite smile, but kept her professional composer as best she could in the presence of company.
Chris easily slipped back into ASL now that he had her attention, not wanting to leave Nika out of the conversation. He quickly made the proper introductions. Nik, this is Arden Daniels, the new transfer I was telling you about. Arden, this is my best friend in the entire universe and the most badass firefighter I have ever seen, Nika Stan. She's staying with me for a few days during recovery.
Nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about you. Arden relaxed, shook Nika's hand, and offered the man a small chuckle of her own. So, this is the girl you learned to sign for?
Nika didn't miss the way Chris's cheeks grew a light shade of pink at Arden's accusation, though all she could do herself was stare at her best friend and wait for his answer. She'd always wondered why he'd learned ASL but never thought to ask, assuming that like everyone else, that's just how things went.
I didn't learn for her. He shook his head with a soft smile. He glanced over at Nika whose warm amber eyes were trained on his face, and he couldn't look away. I learned because of her.
Isn't that the same thing? Arden continued once she'd had Chris's attention again.
No.
Arden, now interested in what Chris had to say, sat down on the bumper of the truck behind her. It'd become increasingly clear to Nika throughout this small interaction, that like herself, Arden's experience with hearing people wasn't always positive. Truth be told, she'd never really thought of Chris as "just another hearing person" because he'd never treated her as "just another hearing impaired" girl. But then again, their relationship was different entirely.
How is that not the same thing?
Because I could always learn to sign, but Nik could never learn to hear again. I learned ASL so that I could talk to my favorite person in the world without barriers.
He'd never admitted it before, at least not out loud. No one had ever asked except Sebastian once, and when Chris didn't immediately offer an answer, he didn't press the issue. After that, he never really thought about it. For Chris, it was self-explanatory. Why would you ask a Deaf person to accommodate you in a world that's made for you?
Well, now that that particular cat was out of the bag, Chris wondered how long it would be until Nika knew the truth of how he felt about her. He'd move heaven and hell to see her smile again, but he knew it wouldn't return until she was healed up and back on the job. He couldn't just let her go home after this, not when things were finally taking a step in the right direction.
The world needs more people like you, Captain. Hearing people who don't see us Deaf as something broken to be fixed. Arden said, grabbing Chris's attention once more.
If you think I'm great, you should meet Nik's brother. He taught me everything I know about being a good advocate for the Deaf Community.
Nika rolled her eyes at the mention of Sebastian. She loved her brother, but she was loving her time away from his overprotectiveness even more. Who do you think taught him what he knows? she joked, giving Chris a playful shove.
Arden couldn't help the smile tugging at the corner of her mouth as she watched the two of them interact. Chris was a goner...it showed in the brightness of his smile and the melody of his laughter.
I'm going to get back to it. But Nika it was nice meeting you. And if you're still around after shift, I'd love to get your number before you go.
It was nice meeting you too. I'm sure I'll see you again before the night's over. Don't let Evans run you into the ground.
Chris put his hand to his chest in mock offense. Hey! I resent that. I am a fantastic Squad Captain.
Sure, whatever helps you sleep at night, C.
The air between Chris and Nika was playful and electric. He led her back to his office in a comfortable silence, her left hand securely tucked into his right one. Both of them were coming down off of the excitement they shared with Arden, and the weight of his near-confession still hung just out of reach.
He shut the door behind her to give them some privacy.
So, what'd you think of Daniels?
Nika shook her head with a chuckle. Female Seb, but Deaf. It's weird.
I thought the same thing when I first met her. She's good at her job. he offered.
Hey, Chris?
Yeah, Nik? What's up?
Chris stopped in front of where Nika leaned carefully against his desk. She was staring down at her shoes, lost in thoughts she hadn't yet shared with him. He tucked his finger under her chin, lifting her head to meet his gaze. What's wrong?
I was just wondering… what are you doing with your time? Her soft honey eyes found his mesmerizing blue ones.
There in the quiet of his office, Chris did the one thing he'd been waiting to do for seven years—before he could talk himself out of it, he leaned down and softly kissed Nika's lips.
It's yours if you want it.

Eden's Gate: Left Behind Chapter 1 - Welcome to Hope County
A new series!!!. Take place 2 years before the events of Kidnapped.
I created "Hope County University" for this series, and a few other locations that aren't in the game. Because its all headcanon shit.
Warnings: None
Word count: 1.9k
John Seed slightly out of character. (That's what happens when you encounter a Winchester 😂😂)
Tumblr media
*********************************
Hope County, Montana, February 2018
*Arizona by Hey Monday plays on the radio*
A black 1970 Monte Carlo with a small trailer attached to it drives down the road with an Arizona license plate on it "ARIZONA E34R90D".
19 year old Kate Winchester, who just moved out of her aunt and uncle's house drove 7 hours from Jackson, Wyoming to Hope County, Montana. Drumming her fingers on the steering wheel to song.
Starting her new life, leaving the hunter life behind her, she applied and got accepted at Hope County University.
Hoping to get her Master of Science degree in Psychology, and then move on to get her Doctorate Degree.
Luckily her aunt and uncle were able to cover her tuition for the whole year. She even told them that she was willing to pay her own rent, and which surprisingly is only $750 a month. Hell her rent is cheaper here, than Arizona and Wyoming put together, but of course they're willing to pay for it, even though she refused, so she saves some money there.
She’s been attending college since she was 15 years old. She lied about her age to get a head start, with the help of her aunt Laura, and her grandmother Eliza. She attended community college in Wyoming before wanting to get transferred out of state.
She was able to rent out a small 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house with a decent size backyard that is owned by the University, which is why the rent is pretty cheap usually it costs a lot more, and she also got a job at the University's café & diner with starting pay at $14.50. To her that seems very unrealistic but she’ll take it, she ain’t complaining.
She drives down the road with her dog Haley in the passenger seat with her head out the window trying to bite the wind as they drive down the road.
"Smell that fresh Montana air Hale" she says with a smile, Haley pulls her head back in and lets out a bark, her eyes widened and has that look like she's smiling.
You know that look dogs do with their tongues hanging out making them look like they're smiling.
Driving down the road, off on the side, a huge billboard sign with a photo of some man with the caption.
“We Love You and We Will Take You”
"That's very welcoming" she jokes.
Kate turns onto a small side road that leads to her new home.
She drives slowly, while looking at the GPS on her phone.
After a few minutes she finds the house.
"Here it is" she says, pulling into the driveway.
Shutting off the car, and getting out.
"Come on Hale" she says, padding her thigh.
She takes the house keys out of her pocket, and opens the door.
It's a decent size house for someone who's living on their own, the house is slightly furnished. Her uncle Brent sent some of their old furniture to her new house.
A coffee table, a few chairs, few lamps, a night stand, and a full size bed with the frame, head, footboard, mattress and box spring.
The backyard is bigger than she thought. She opens the door, and lets Haley out to the back.
"Go sniff around" she tells her.
The 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd sniffs the corners of the fence, looking for a spot to do her business.
Kate goes back inside, leaving the backdoor open for Haley.
She checks out the rest of the house, the 2 bedrooms, the bathroom and washroom, luckily a washer and dryer comes with the place. So at least she wouldn't want to buy it.
She goes back to the living room, and sees that Haley came back inside.
She goes to close the backdoor, locking it, she heads out to the front and unpacks her trailer. Boxes, boxes and boxes of her stuff, clothes, books, her WiFi router, personal hygiene products, small furniture, stuff for school, some groceries she has in her mini fridge, some of Haley's stuff, her toys and food.
She finishes unpacking around 3:30pm, her room is all set up, her bed is fixed, all her clothes are put away in the closet and dresser, she has photos of her friends, family and posters of bands she likes hanging up on the walls.
She set up her 60inch TV, the box and WiFi router in the living room, she put up curtains on all the windows, and put some plants out on the front porch.
She has all of her hunter stuff in the 2nd bedroom, her angel blades, demon blades, holy water, bags of salt, her books, her dad’s journal. Bullets filled with rock salt, and all of her other hunting supplies.
She has everything set up, and all she needed now was a kitchen table, a couch and maybe some appliances like a microwave, toaster and a coffee maker.
She sighs in relief, lays back on her bed, Haley jumps on, laying next to her.
"You wanna go into town?!?" she asks the dog, she looks at her while tilting her head to the right.
"You wanna go for a walk?!?" she asks again, she tilts her head to the left while still looking at her. She lets out a loud bark which catches Kate off guard, and jumps off the bed.
Running back and forth down the hall, jumping at her on the bed in excitement.
She gets up from the bed.
"Okay let me find your leash" she says, while going into the living room.
She goes through some of her boxes.
After a few minutes, she finds her leash and puts it on her collar. Debating whether or not to take her in the car, or walk into town.
"It's only a 10-20 minute walk from here to town" she says out loud.
After a couple of minutes, she decides to drive, just in case some stores don't allow animals in, she can leave Haley in the car with all the windows down of course, or maybe leave her outside.
They drive into town, and she parks her car next to a gas station store.
"Come one Hale" she says.
She jumps out of the car, Kate locks it up and they walk past the small shops.
A grocery store, a pharmaceutical store, a gun shop, an autoshop, and  lastly a bar called "The Spread Eagle".
She looks around, and sees an appliance store, she really does need those appliances.
She walks closer, and sees a sign on the door saying "Sorry, no animals allowed inside".
"Of course" she says to herself.
She ties Haley's leash to a parking meter under a tree
"I'll be right back" she says to her, petting her head.
She goes inside the store and looks around. Right off the bat she finds a toaster with 4 slots, and it costs $30 in which to her is a steal.
She finds a coffee maker and a microwave all that costs a decent amount, less than she thought it would be.
She pays for her stuff, and goes back outside to untie Haley, they walk back to the car, and put the appliances in the backseat covering them with a blanket.
They continue to walk around the small town of Falls End located in the Holland Valley region. They cross the street to go onto the opposite side. Up ahead Kate sees a small group of people walking into a church on the other side of the street. Thinking nothing of it.
While on the other side of the street at Falls End Church, John Seed is standing outside of it holding the Book of Joseph, preaching.
"Sin must be exposed so it may be absolved. We must wash away our past" while some of his men escort some locals into the church.
"You will know the power of Yes, you will confess your sins" he continues.
As he looks around he sees Kate with Haley walking on the opposite side of the street.
He stares at her as she walks by, a smirk appears on his face. Perhaps he is engrossed by her?. He gets a weird feeling in his stomach but he ignores it.
He continues to watch her as she walks further down the street away from the church.
He shakes his head, snapping out of that trance, and continues to preach to the sinners.
Kate walks down the street towards a different market. Once again they don't allow animals in the store.
So she ties Haley to a small iron fence in the shade "I'll be back'" she tells her again.
She shops for about 25 minutes, she doesn't like to keep her dog outside that long especially out in public, she grabs bread, eggs, orange juice, fruit, cereal, milk, breakfast sausages, bacon, dog treats, grounded coffee and butter.
Typical stuff you would buy at a grocery store.
She pays for her stuff, goes outside, unties Haley putting the leash around her wrist.
"Here you can hold your treats" she says, as she gives Haley her bag of Beggin Strips.
She carries it in her mouth making the bags less heavy for Kate, and they head back to the car. They cross the street, now walking on the church side. John steps out of it, and sees Kate walking towards the church.
He gets a better look at her, she's really cute. Actually she’s more than cute, she’s beautiful. Black hair past her shoulders, brown eyes, looks like she could be 19-22 years old?. Could she be a college student?. He's about to say something to her, but it gets ruined when one of his men calls out for him.
"John!!" they call out.
Turning his head to look back at him.
He quickly looks back at Kate who is too far for him to call out to her.
He rolls his eyes in annoyance, and goes back inside the church to see what they want.
Kate walks back to her car, and puts her groceries in the back seat.
Haley jumps into the front seat, and they drive off.
They get stopped at a red light in front of the church, John looks out the window, and sees a black 70 Monte Carlo with a German Shepard sticking its head out the window.
He quickly recognizes the dog, and sees Kate in the driver seat.
Quickly, he goes outside before the light turns green. He doesn’t know what to say to her, so he yells out "Nice car!!".
Kate can't see who yelled it because Haley is blocking her view from the passenger side, and is barking at some of the peggies outside the church.
So she yells back, "Thank you!!" followed with a honk of the horn. She in a way acknowledged John even if she didn't really see him.
She continued to drive down the road heading back home.
After a 10 minute drive, she makes it home, and puts all her groceries away, hooks up the appliances and sits back on one of her chairs for the rest of the day watching TV with Haley chilling at her feet.
“What a day Hale” she says, resting her feet on the table.
*3 in half hours later*
That night John is baptizing, cleansing some sinners, making them a step closer to being a part of Eden’s Gate. He’s doing his usual thing, making sure they are cleansed, and washed away from their sins.
He can’t seem to get Kate off his mind, he finds this very strange because these are some new feelings, that he has never felt before.
After he finishes the baptism, Joseph notices something is off about his younger brother.
He approaches him once he’s finished.
“John?!” he says, approaching him. “What is troubling you brother?”.
John doesn’t know what to say, he stumbles with his words “Nothing, Joseph”.
He places his hand on John's shoulder, their foreheads touching.
“It’s about a girl, isn’t it?” he asks, sounding like he already knew what this was all about.
John looks down, and lets out a soft sigh.
“Go to her. She can be your other half, when we cross Eden’s Gate” he tells him, before walking away.
John looks up at his older brother as he walks away, leaving him to contemplate with what he should do next.

i didn't get in
Hi there, Tumblr. Today is a weird day.
When I graduated high school, I moved to a different state to study chemical engineering. Growing up, I thought I'd really like it, but after going at it for about a year and half, I realized I didn't want to work a single day as an engineer.
The topics I was studying were horribly boring, and I was quickly starting to realize that my life potential was hitting a dead end. I had two major depressive episodes (the latter the most severe) and had no choice but to leave engineering for a year. I wanted to ponder and research how I could get my life to go in a different direction. I was miserable.
Well, for a while I wanted to become a psychologist. I love psychology and it has always been a dream of mine to treat mental illness. I wanted to study psychology and then move on to graduate study to become a clinical psychologist.
It was like my light through the Hell of my very real reality of becoming a chemical engineer. And during my year off, I had time and the lack of pressure to think and decide where I wanted my life to go. The only thing that I loved more than psychology was writing. It has always been my safe place, and when I am writing or reading - I'm either doing really great or on my way to feeling better.
I applied to a handful of universities. Some to stay in the state I'm in now, and another back home where I'm from (and where my parents live). I applied to two different schools in my home state - one as a Psychology admission and the other as a Journalism/English admission.
After taking a year off, I had three official choices to choose from.
A. Finish my engineering degree, and then just not work as an engineer.
B. Go back to my home state as a Psychology major.
C. Go back to my home state as a Journalism/English major.
And well, to put it delicately, now I only have two options.
I didn't get into my Psych choice school. They denied my transfer. I met all the requirements, had a great resume, and have gotten in before when I applied as an engineering major after graduating high school.
To transfer as an engineering student, you must have a GPA of 3.5. And to transfer as a Psych student, you must have a GPA of 3.0.
I had a freaking CHEMICAL ENGINEERING GPA of 3.6.
But - denied.
I'm very surprised I didn't get in. Because I just don't understand why. If I had to guess, I'd figure it's because of two things: I've taken a year off and depression makes you look dumb when you put in on a transcript. Even though I explained that part in my essay??
***TRIGGER WARNING: SELF HARM (triggering text in bold/red)***
But in my essay, I had to be professional. Sorry I didn't say I went to hospital during my Spring Break in Utah after trying to slit my wrist with a freshly sharpened kitchen knife for fifteen minutes.
But yeah, so I didn't get in because I look like a quitter-when-it-gets-hard (I dropped classes during my two depressive episodes to protect my GPA from my crippling depression) and because deferment makes it look like I'm lost.
So great. The 21st century isn't as educated on the human condition as I thought. I shouldn't be surprised - we're still living in a society where SAT scores very much matter.
But now, I think I won't get into my other school choice - the Journalism/English one. Because that school is even harder to get into and if that's what my Psych choice thinks of me, I can't even imagine what these guys are gonna think of me.
So great - now I have to go back to engineering school. And to be honest, I was probably going to do that anyway, but I wanted it to be a CHOICE. Not a fucking default. I am very annoyed and disheartened.
And the weird thing is, when I found out last night that I didn't get into my psych choice - I wasn't really all that upset. It felt right that I wasn't going to there. But my ego hurts a bit. Rejection is divine protection, right?
I just wish it protected my ego, too.
But now it's like, welp - guess I'm not gonna major in Psychology. Like it's literally not an option for me, and I hate not being allowed to do things. I like control - I'm a writer, I have a bit of a God complex, what can I say?
I'm not upset that I won't be going to this school. I'm upset that they don't want me to, that I literally can't, and now I'm pretty sure I'm going to get another rejection. I'm, like, very pessimistic, now.
But the other school's rejection actually will upset me. That one's really gonna make me doubt my talent as a writer. I wrote essays and I put so much into those. I submitted so many additional materials - a resume, a GLOWING recommendation letter, and TWO extra essays.
I'm gonna have a bit of a crisis - like I'm going to feel pretty insignificant and untalented. Kind of like I have no purpose or specialty. Like no one wants me.
I don't know how I'm gonna take it. But I'm not looking forward to it. In fact, me - and my depression - are pretty fucking horrified.
Wish us luck. xx

#finishedbooks The Velvet Rope Economy by Nelson D. Schwartz. Continuing books on corporate capitalism, this serves as an investigation into how Americans are divided by an economic velvet rope in every aspect of life where those inside experience a friction-free existence while everyone else is left to play out a Darwinian struggle for the ever dwindling middle class. Appropriately he divides the book into two parts: Inside the Velvet Rope with the following chapters: Envy, Exclusivity, Ease, Access, and Security; and Outside the Velvet Rope with Exclusion, Division, and Isolation. Again since the 1970s incomes outside of the top ten percent have remained flat while the top one percent have skyrocketed...even worse now with COVID-19 where 3 people have more than the entire bottom half of the US. The problem then comes as you can't shred the norms of reciprocity that make social cohesion possible and expect to have functioning democracy. With that and like the gilded age of say the classes of passengers in trains (the worst of which didn't even have a roof), he relates that to most industries today from amusement parks and sporting stadiums to more vital ones like healthcare and with climate change private fire fighter squads. The Pareto Principle can be applied here that states there is an optimal point that after which it becomes impossible to improve the condition of one participant without harming the condition of another. It isn't dividing a pie equally per se, but it distributes resources in a way that doesn't require a sacrifice from one group to better another. Now for those outside the rope. This goes into the defunding of schools and how PTAs have become a direct way to transfer wealth into their schools which can't really be reported, so looking at it now the statistics on student incomes I showed some time back with my "how many black kids were taught..." collage are probably even more disparate than I showed. I checked there was to be legislation for schools to reflect PTA funding, but haven't heard if that went through. This section also details the price cutting on city and community colleges the traditional social levers for people who had the ambition but not the money. It then goes into Division talking about the healthcare system looking specifically at the Bay Area. Doctor's Medical Center in particular, turned one whole floor of this public hospital into a ward for San Quentin prisoners which doctors noted the government rate of reimbursement costs to care for prisoners greatly exceeded the amount of coverage of their minority patients. This country also spends 4 times as much on those prisoners as a minority public school children compounding where priorities lay. And a lot of the problem is these healthcare companies that come to "streamline" public hospitals that are only concered with getting healthcare money and this goes into the money oriented criminal justice system as well. For example a county in Arizona (Maricopa if you want to look it up) still has in place marijuana possesion as a felony, BUT for $950 and participation in a privately contracted program, you can get off with a clean slate! You do have to pee in a cup a couple times a week that is at an additional charge handled by another private company and if at anytime you can't pay then the felony comes back. Ending on Isolation it chronicles the food deserts which I will detail one example in my stories since this has gotten quite long. To end, I had once written a Kafka-esque short story about flying into America because I hated how the experience compounded your socieconmic status complete with myself always getting the "random" security checks...but there was a bit of hope. I love flying Southwest Airlines where there are no classes and you just feel like all passengers matter. Always friendly and really the only way to get preferential treatment is by being active in pre check-in precisely 24 hours before. They are the most profitable airline in American history.
