Howling Of Hounds ~ Bela Talbot x fem!winchesterOC

Warnings: implied character death, no background for a character I have technically created a lot of backstory for, no beta

Takes place in the end of S3E15 “Time Is On My Side”

Dean was about to end the call, but Kate grabbed his shoulder.

“Stop the car.”

“What? No!”

“Stop the car Dean, or I swear to God I’ll kill you before the Hellhounds ever get to.”

He hit the breaks.

“Ok ok, sheesh.”

The Impala came to a rather abrupt halt in the middle of the empty dirt road.

Kate reached out her hand towards the front, “Phone.”

Dean gave up on the argument, simply placing the cell in his sisters hand.

She took it and exited the car, no words spoken between them as the brothers watched her walk to a tree on the side of the road.

She didn’t really know what to say into the phone, so she stared at it for a moment. The digital numbers on the display seemingly mocking her. 11:58, two minutes left and Kate couldn’t come up with anything to say. It wondered her that the woman on the other end hadn’t ended the call yet.

“Kate?”

She sucked in a breath, wasted about ten more seconds but then, “Hey Bell.”

“It’s good to hear your voice.”

She could hear the shake in Bela’s voice, it was almost jarring. No matter how scared or mad Bela got, she usually kept her composure.

But then again, she was going to die in about 60 seconds, what was the point?

Kate tangled her fingers in the blond looks on her head, clutching at strands to calm herself, “Yeah yours too.”

“I see you picked up the phone to listen to me die?”

“No… but I won’t let you do this one alone.”

She heard a sniff on the other side, then a tearful chuckle, “I’m good at doing things alone…”

Tears started welling up in Kate’s eyes, 30 seconds.

“Yeah well, not this one.”

“Kate-“

“Don’t.”

Bela sighed, “You know I have to-“

There was a small pause in her words, but it only made her next ones so much clearer. And so much more painful.

“You were the only person I ever truly loved, Kate Winchester-“

Kate was holding onto the phone for fear life, it was like a cold claw dug itself into her heart and tried to rip it out.

“Bela please-“

“-And that’s why I left back then… it scared me, I cared too much.”

Her words were broken, focused on holding back the tears, but Kate knew better, and her own tears finally started falling, cheeks stained with wet mascara, “I know.”

The howling of Hellhounds on Bela’s end made her shiver, ten seconds.

“But I’m going to be selfless for once.”

Like a ton of bricks, “What?”

“Goodbye Kate.”

“What?! No! Bell don’t you dare, I-“

The line cut off, the unmistakable beeping of an ended phone call, but Kate could swear she still heard the sinister howling of Hellhounds. As if the sound had dug itself a pretty place in her brain, and she doubted it would leave anytime soon.

Practically collapsing against the tree, Kate dropped to the ground. Burying her head in her arms, a few sobs left her lips.

“-love you too.”

After a few minutes, her brothers stepped out of the car. Both approaching her rather apprehensively.

Sam decided to speak first, “you okay, Katie?”

She looked up from her arms, face red and bloated, stained from teary makeup, and her hair disheveled from grasping at it in distress. One more sniff, as Kate wiped her face with her hands. Smearing everything together even more.

“No, not really.”

Older siblings in media are so often misunderstood. Either adored or hated, but never an in-between. The pressure is always there, never enough or too much.

It’s the Steven Crain’s who are hated, the Fiona Gallagher’s who are forced onto a pedestal, the Dick Grayson’s who are reduced to nothing but their mistakes and issues, the John Dory’s who is only ever the oppressor and never the oppressed, the Isabela Madrigal’s who are considered vain and self centered.

It’s the eldest child who has no one on their team because they are the leader, and that is either meant to be taken from them or only ever for them.

It’s the Kate Sharma’s and the Anthony Bridgerton’s. It’s the Bill Weasley’s and it’s the Dean Winchester’s. It’s the Eric Matthew’s and it’s the Elsa’s.

The eldest sibling whose mistakes are over analyzed or completely ignored, who are never seen as humans because they are something to claim or destroy. The first born who is never understood in media or by fans, maybe it’s because acknowledging the fact that they’re human means they aren’t perfect is too much. Or maybe it’s because acknowledge that they are human and therefore cannot be defined by their mistakes and the weight they carry is too much.

They are not allowed to be perfect and yet if they are anything but perfect the world would riot.
