I think this is the most angelic shot of aziraphale ever. and I mean ever. and it’s him lying to gabriel to thwart the will of god. isn’t that beautiful

The way Azirphale is underestimated and practically infantalized by heaven is so closely tied to his femininity and I think we should talk about it more because I just want to shout about how relatable the way he's treated in his workplace is as a woman working in a traditionally male field
It's in all the little niggling comments from your boss about personal things that hold no bearing on your work
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and the assumption that what you're doing must be simple if it was assigned to you
Tumblr media Tumblr media
your work is trivialized
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and you get these the placating smiles when you're told plans and proposals are rejected and passed over
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
or when your complaints are dismissed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and you get more of the same from upper management
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it all feels so frustrating and draining but you're at work so all you can do is take a breathe put on that mask and move on with your day
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is all so deteimental to your emotional well being and textually, so much of this is tied to Aziraphale's softness, his gayness - his femininity
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing about working in an environment and gives you this feeling - of being simultaneously destrought watching your belief in yourself get chipped away but also just so irate becuase you know you don't deserve it - is how it builds. It sinks under your skin and feeds into this indignant dejection until you can have a moment of release - but Azirphale doesn't get to bitch about it over drinks with friends, he doesn't get a lunch break where he can go for a walk and listen to an angry scandi death metal playlist, he doesn't even get the chance to cry about it in the bathroom for 5 minutes before confronting it again
(And I talked a little bit about it in the tags of this beautiful photoset but this all comes into play whenever Crowley dismisses his plans or calls him an idiot. These are purely emotional reactions; I really don't think Crowley means much by it - he respects Aziraphale's opinion and genuinely thinks he's brilliant - but Crowley is so quick to use this terminology when Aziraphale is making a decision Crowley thinks is wrong and he doesn't know how much this hurts Aziraphale. Just like Aziraphale doesn't understand the true impact the Fall had on Crowley, Crowley doesn't understand the ways heaven has been tearing away at Aziraphale's self worth)
Aziraphale has been facing this constant drip of denigration since before the beginning of time and has never released the pressure valve. At this point, he's a bomb waiting to go off

but can you imagine having the amount of faith that aziraphale does? we can argue all we like that it's naive and it's dangerous and its foolish, but to have that amount of faith in anything is truly and completely remarkable
and the matter at hand here is not where he puts that faith; it's the fact that he has seen the things he has, done the things he's done, and felt the things he's felt... and still believes? has faith anyway? that he's literally had his faith in heaven and god teetering on a precipice and managed to keep it standing, he's had his faith in humanity tested to the brink and yet proven it worthwhile by sheer will and tenacity, and his faith in crowley - in crowley being such a good and kind person that aziraphale knows he shouldn't have fallen - is the most unshakeable thing he has known, the true well from which his faith draws?
look, you might question if he should have that faith anymore, and whether he should stake it in the places that he does, and i agree - but the sheer gut-felt, unwavering, unassailable faith that he holds in spite of everything he has seen and done is one of the most admirable and divine things about him.

i love how unfatherly crowley and aziraphale both are when it comes down to it. sure aziraphale is more than willing to give the young people in his life help and advice and be their friend but he and crowley spent six years (eleven in the book) practically raising a kid (you just know his parents weren't around that often) and by the end they didn't even like him. crowley even suggested they just fucking kill him. he turned three kids into lizards for annoying him right after he destroyed their house. like it was that or kill them obviously but he did NOT hesitate with the newts. that's so funny to me. they're just inherently disinclined to parenthood. we need more characters like them actually

My Good Omens fanfictions are kicking off. Or, should I say, Lady Crowley is. In one of the stories, she was supposed to end up with Hastur. No, she decided she wants to be with Michael.
I guess, I'll need to come up with a seperate F!Crowley x Hastur storyline, because I'm not letting go of that ship.
F!Crowley x Michael... I like the sound of that. I really do.

Has happened to all of us, hasn't it? Your superior in the military waltzes in, and seduces the love of your life. Not to mention, that's his pregnant girlfriend, and when he finds out, it's too late.
Whatever, Calla Crowley can still end up an astronomy-obsessed, equestrian pastel goth, if General of the Heavenly Host is her stepmother.
I must say... In one story she's with Satan, in the other she'll be with Michael... Lady Crowley, honey, you keep pulling the Olympians. Good for you.
P.S. - I don't know how accurately to Good Omens I'll portray Michael, since I haven't seen season 2, and it doesn't matter. I have a very particular way I like to see the figure. Honestly, if she isn't the General, and the leader of angels in Good Omens, it's a crime. Because, if she is, why haven't I seen her in armour/uniform in any of the screencaps?.. Either way, her version I intend to paint is amazing.

okay. listen. whatever you do, don't think about how nothing about Heaven feels loved.
certainly not in the way Aziraphale's used to, a sunshine warm unexpected delight. there are no flashes of love from places or people falling and grieving and caring too much. it took him a while, but ever since he can tell the difference it's like forgetting how to breathe, can't stop the wheeze. within the air occupied by the angels (their chests don't move, do their hearts have a rhythm?) a wrong-shaped, lost cabin pressure meets him halfway, only they don't hang masks from that ceiling, he's looking down at the aeroplanes. he could always breathe easier with - red and black at the periphery - yellow too, if he's lucky. (he's not anymore)
put a hand to it, and he can pretend that the burning too high in his throat glows steady and low inside the chest; pray, so it matches someone, anyone, way Down below.

Crowley hated this.
No, not watching Aziraphale prance ahead of him, absolutely beaming with his plans for the meeting that night. It wasn’t that he hated. In Crowley's eyes - snake-like as they were - any moment spent admiring his angel was a moment well spent. He could never detest seeing Aziraphale so happy, exuding pure excitement and energy. Never.
What he hated was the distance. Aziraphale was barely an arm's length away, Crowley swaggered only a few steps behind - and yet, despite everything, despite the years of them being an "us, " it still felt like a chasm between them. Something keeping them out of reach from one another, this time entirely out of the influence of Heaven and Hell.
Though, in all honesty, it wasn't the physical nature of the distance that bothered him. For them - for Crowley - it would never be that simple. If only he could pick up his pace so he was walking side-by-side with Aziraphale, and everything would feel right in the world. If only their proximity was the issue.
No, it wasn't the gap between their bodies that he despised. It was what it represented. He hated the distance between them because it symbolized where Aziraphale would always be for Crowley.
Just out of reach.

"he said i could appoint you to be an angel"
he said I could give back the happiness that was unfairly ripped away from you, to see you make stars without fear. i'm directly going against the almighty's decision and pushing past my trauma of heaven for you. i want you to be happy again.

[[ unplotted starter for @hodgepodgebitches (Crowley)
Touch was something Aziraphale tended to overthink. He always had. He was careful about what and who and how he touched. Deliberate. So much so that he remembered each and every time he had touched Crowley. Not so much the times Crowley had touched him, of course, but every time, over the course of the last 6000 years, that he had reached out to touch his shoulder or back or arm in a crowd, every time he had pushed him out of the way of something, every time he had put an arm around him in drunken celebration or relief. All of them were carefully cataloged in his memory, each one a moment to be treasured. It was thrilling, to be adding so freely now to that list now.
Aziraphale, for the sixth time in four days, reached for Crowley. His heartrate rose, and he fought a giddy sort of smile, and he settled his hand firmly on Crowley's upper arm. "Hello," he said warmly, his smile turning soft and his eyes sparked with the joy that came just from Crowley's presence.

GO2 Spoilers ahead! Honestly I love all the theories (coffee, lie, magic trick) and think they're fun, interesting, and thorough, and while I think people are definitely asking the right questions, I personally don't think the Metatron overtly threatened Aziraphale or altered his state of mind in any way.
(the magic trick theory perhaps suggests that metatron just changed things to make Aziraphale more likely to say yes to him, but I don't know if I personally find that necessary)
There is Definitely Somethig Up with how Aziraphale retells his convo with the Metatron, but I really don't think it was an overt threat, esp not one to Crowley
(I think an overt threat to Crowley wouldve seen Aziraphale try to signal to Crowley in some way, they're good at that. And a pretty different/more stubborn, angry reaction on Azis part)
I could def be proven wrong next season, but Aziraphale seems Genuinely excited about the prospect of being Angels together with Crowley in Heaven and wanting that is 99.99% within his character.
Reasons I'm about to get into, but it isn't ONLY that it is within his character to want this, but it's also within his character:
To want to Check with Crowley First
Tumblr media
Like, we see Aziraphale Check in with Crowkey before even TALKING to the Metatron. He isn't going to turn down an offer of Angelic Status on Crowley's behalf Without Asking
Tumblr media
Like, yes of course Aziraphale is Excited, he Wants Crowley to say yes, there may have even been a disagreement or arguement if Crowley had said "oh you can tell them my answer is a resounding no."Like they may have still had the same convo bc Aziraphale hadn't been prepared for a No answer. (Ppl do this all the time, ask a genuine question then getting upset when the answer is no)
But ppl, I think Aziraphale was Attempting to Ask Crowley for their opinion, for what they wanted because Aziraphale never actually at any point tells Metatron "Yes" (or no)
I think being Angels with Crowley in a Heaven Aziraphale feels he can control ticks so many boxes of what he wants.
It lets Aziraphale:
Be together with Crowley in a way that is Safe for them both (his favorite thing)
It lets Aziraphale Do good and Help the Humans (his other favorite thing)---this may be a post for another time, but BOTH Azi and Crowley seem genuinely concerned for the souls and well being of the Humans they interact with that aren't, you know, freaking nazis. We see this with both Elspeth And Sitis (Crowley stops her from cursing God)
It lets Aziraphale give Crowley something back that he feels was taken away from Crowley unfairly (and in turn restore his sense of balance with the universe)
It lets Aziraphale be sure there won't be another Armageddon
It lets Aziraphale repay a debt i think he may feel he owes Crowley
It could even let Aziraphale help other angels he sees as like himself, hat he has something in common with like Muriel
And Aziraphale can always pop back down to earth when he likes
Like there are so many reasons for Aziraphale to think this is a good idea.
And those reasons are Not Even ALL wrong
The problem is Crowley doesnt Want to, for good reason, and Aziraphale will probably have less power than he thinks
Aziraphale Wanted to be able to say Yes
And he Might have said no to the Metatron if he'd just Asked Crowley with clear words on Crowleys opinion instead of just assuming and then being too shocked and hurt by Crowleys judgement and refusal to even be like "well I didn't answer dear, I wanted to check with you first. "
All that being said, I DO think Metatron subtly threatened Aziraphale, enough where Aziraphale still cared about safety, didn't forget that he and Crowley were unsafe, that Metatron reminded him in subtle ways of all the info that could be used against them Both, all while seeming a friend. I think the Or Death was implied, but I don't think Aziraphale quite caught on cognitively but instinctively (see reason number 1)
Metatron went for an obvious carrot and a subtle stick.

not about harry potter, but do you watch good omens?
and if so, thoughts???
i have perhaps an. unhealthy level of emotional investment in good omens
(psst there are ~4 days left of the official graphic novel kickstarter if anyone hasn't pledged who wants to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dunmanifestin/good-omens/description, it just hit its last stretch goal, THERE IS AZ FELL AND CO BOOKSTORE MERCH AS ADD ONS)
what are my thoughts? let's see. the ending of season 2 makes perfect sense as the second part of a trilogy but it still hurt me deeply and if aziraphale doesn't do the apology dance in season 3 i'll lose my mind. also if he does do the apology dance in season 3 i'll lose my mind. basically if there is season 3 and aziraphale is in it--
loved the conversation between nina and maggie and crowley at the end of s2, i watched it for the first time with a massive jane austen fan who was THRILLED the second he heard even a *reference* to her in the show (so naturally the ball was the absolute High Point of the season)
at the end of s1 it's basically explicitly stated that The Big One is heaven and hell vs. humanity so i'm intrigued to see what's going to happen in s3 to that end
i don't think the metatron actually wanted crowley to be reinstated to heaven, he just wanted to drive crowley and aziraphale apart and figured that offer would do it (and that it would sell aziraphale on the idea of changing heaven from the inside as Something He Could Actually Do) - i also am intrigued by how god's going to factor into all of it bc as we see with job god's totally down to fuck around with everyone (likewhatmaggieandninaweresaying) but in s1 god was basically just functioning as narrator and had that one conversation with aziraphale - so if god's going to become more active that would be fascinating, but i am also very interested in how exactly the metatron fits into all of this and the degree of control/influence there
i like the idea that muriel was memory wiped like they were going to do to gabriel (~institutional problems~) but i'm not sure how supported it is by the narrative - i don't know anything about muriel the angel like. biblically, or even if that's a biblical angel, so maybe if i knew more i'd have a more confident opinion afjslgkhjskdf
jon hamm in season 1 made me want to punch him in the face every time he showed up on screen and in season 2 i was delighted by basically everything he did. what a guy
i also desperately want to know if anathema heard about any of the events of s2 and if so what she thought of All Of That, so if anyone has like. fic recs for something of that nature let me know afjlskhgljskdf
and finally: crowley

Ok but knowing what we know now, how Crowley was there to jumpstart everything 'before the begining' and how enamoured he was of the whole creation and the world, i feel it adds an extra layer to Aziraphale's toast 'to the world' at the end of S1.
Like yes Aziraphale cares for the world in a general sense, but to me it really felt like he started caring 'specifically' because of Crowley. Because Crowley cared so much himself. And its where they could be together.
And also not related to the toast but i do fully believe that if Metatron hadnt mentionned a Second Coming before they take the elevator to heaven, Aziraphale might have gone to Crowley? But th Second Coming is very much not a good thing and Aziraphale is right that they need to change heavens and no one else but him will, so he needs to be there to protect the world Crowley loves even if Crowley is no longer with him
