Hooch Tragedy in Tamil Nadu: Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a financial compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who died, and Rs 50,000 for those who are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.

Chennai: At least 10 people, including three women, died allegedly after consuming spurious liquor in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu. Giving details, officials told news agency ANI that six people from Ekkiyarkuppam near Marakkanam in Villupuram district died on Sunday. Two persons in Maduranthagam in Chengalpattu district died on Friday and a couple died on Sunday, all caused due to illicit liquor consumption, officials said. They further added that more than two dozen people are undergoing treatment and are said to be doing well.

Two Accused Arrested

Police said two accused have been arrested for supplying illicit liquor and added that special teams have been formed to search for more suspects. Senior police officer Kannan, IG North Zone, stated that a total of seven policemen including inspectors and sub-inspectors have also been arrested.

MK Stalin Announces Compensation

In the meantime, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a financial compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who died, and Rs 50,000 for those who are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.

Police to Take Action Against Culprits

After the incident was reported, Inspector General of Police (North) N Kannan assured proper actions and said that all 10 victims possibly consumed spurious liquor with ethanol-methanol substances in it.

He further added that two separate incidents of spurious liquor deaths have been reported in the north zone of Tamil Nadu and as of now police did not find any evidence of a link between the two incidents but police are investigating from an angle to find any possible links between both the incidents.

“Two spurious liquor incidents have been reported, one in Chengalpattu district and another one in Villupuram district. In Ekkiyarkuppam village under Villupuram district near Marakkanam, yesterday 6 were hospitalised with complaints of Vomiting, eye irritation, vomiting and giddiness. On information, a police team reached the village and admitted ill to the hospital. In this four have died as they didn’t respond to the treatment while two are in the Intensive Care Unit. 33 are doing well with treatment,” the IG said.

Giving details about the second incident in Chengalpattu district where 4 people died, IG N Kannan said, “In the morning, one case was reported from Chithamur of Chengalpattu district where two persons of a family died. While another person was undergoing treatment in the hospital. Initially, we thought this could be a suicide attempt because of a family dispute but after watching their symptom we suspected it to be a spurious liquor incident.”

सीवान जिला प्रशासन की ओर से जारी एक बयान के मुताबिक, 'सीवान जिला अस्पताल में शाम करीब 7 बजे कम से कम 10 लोगों को भर्ती कराया गया. एम। रविवार को पेट दर्द, जी मिचलाने और चक्कर आने की शिकायत के बाद। जिलाधिकारी अमित कुमार पांडेय ने कहा कि पोस्टमार्टम रिपोर्ट के बाद ही मौत के कारणों का पता चलेगा। 'हमने ग्रामीणों से भी बात की है और उनसे आग्रह किया है कि वे अपने क्षेत्र में अवैध शराब के कारोबार के बारे में निडर होकर रिपोर्ट करें। किसी भी मासूम को परेशान नहीं किया जाएगा और एक मेडिकल टीम गांव में डेरा डाले हुए है। एक जांच दल का गठन किया गया है और पोस्टमार्टम रिपोर्ट मिलने के बाद हम और अधिक जानकारी दे पाएंगे', श्री पांडे ने कहा।

नाम न छापने की शर्त पर जिले के एक वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारी ने द हिंदू को स्वीकार किया कि कम से कम चार लोगों की मौत हो गई है और 14 सीवान, गोरखपुर (पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश में) और पटना के विभिन्न अस्पतालों में भर्ती हैं। हालांकि, ग्रामीणों ने कहा कि सीवान में मरने वालों की संख्या सात हो गई है, जबकि छह लोगों की आंखों की रोशनी चली गई।

EPS meets TN Governor, seeks action on corruption charges against DMK government

A 10-member AIADMK delegation led by Palaniswami submitted a memorandum to Tamil Nadu governor RN Ravi at Raj Bhavan against the DMK government over the recent hooch tragedy. 

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday led a massive procession towards Raj Bhavan raising slogans against the ruling DMK government for its failure to protect the people from illicit liquor and other law and order issues in the state.

The rally culminated at the Raj Bhavan and a 10-member AIADMK delegation led by Palaniswami submitted a memorandum to Tamil Nadu governor RN Ravi at Raj Bhavan against the DMK government over the recent hooch tragedy.

Talking to reporters after meeting the governor at the Raj Bhavan, Palaniswami gave a detailed account of the recent law and order issues, including the hooch tragedy where 23 people were killed in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts. He also referred to the death of two more persons in Thanjavur after consuming TASMAC liquor and demanded that the postmortem on their bodies should be performed in the JIPMER hospital to bring out the truth.

When a scribe pointed out that he had almost repeated the allegations already made by BJP state president K Annamalai, the AIADMK leader said, "You (media) should see against whom the charges are levelled. He came across these issues through print and media and sought action against them." Palaniswami said.

Traffic came to a standstill in Guindy, Saidapet, Little Mount and a few other places in the city due to the procession. Hundreds of AIADMK workers parked their vehicles on the roadsides, causing heavier traffic disruptions.

Office-goers, workers and the public were affected and were stranded on the road for more than three hours. Asked about this, Palaniswami said, "We have already informed the police and adhered to the guidelines issued by the police. It is the responsibility of the police to regulate the crowd."

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday informed party district secretaries about his plans to intensify party activities, beginning with taking out a procession to Raj Bhavan to file a memorandum against the DMK.

What caused liqour tragedy was not 'hooch', but methanol poisoning: Tamil Nadu DGP

At least 22 people have so far died after they consumed spurious liquor in Tamil Nadu's Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts. State DGP has said the liquor was found to be methanol. The probe into the matter was transferred to the Crime Branch CID.

Days after hooch tragedies claimed the lives of 22 people in the Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts of Chennai, state DGP Sylendra Babu said the liquor which was seized from the crime scene was found to be methanol.

The liquor was sent to a laboratory for testing, where it was found that the methanol was stolen from factories and was unfit for human consumption.

Meanwhile, the case was transferred to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID) for further investigations.

“This Methanol was sold by Amaran from Othiyur. After his arrest and subsequent enquiry, he admitted to having bought it from Muthu who had acquired it from Ezhumalai in Puducherry,” the DGP said in a statement.

The DGP also said a man identified as Amavasai was arrested in connection with the case.

A total of 1,40,649 cases in connection with spurious liquor were registered in 2022, based on which, 1,39,697 accused were arrested, while 37,217 litre of spurious liquor along with 2,957 vehicles were seized, the DGP said.

“Though distilling of liquor illegally has been almost curbed and smuggling of such liquor from neighboring States’ is being constantly monitored, a few have stolen poisonous liquor from factories and sold it which led to the tragedy. It is being investigated to find from which factory Methanol was stolen and who all are involved,” stated DGP Sylendra Babu.
