About:

Mia is the child of an unknown mother and Orville Mallory. She was the result of chromosomal experimentation, and is a set of fused fraternal twins known as a bicephalic chimera. Her daughter is Samya Amari.

As a bicephalic chimera, Mia is part of the conjugate family, and has a Base of 4.25. This gives her the ability to use clairvoyance, which includes mind-reading, a primitive form of hypnosis, and manipulating electric fields. She is lower in Base hierarchy than a Mallory clone, and as such is weaker in strength. Additionally, practicing clairvoyance puts an increased physical strain on her body; side effects include bloody noses, bleeding around the eyes or sclera, headaches, dizziness, or loss of consciousness. However, Mia is adept at using her clairvoyance after years of training, and can do things such as influence air pressure, conjure and use whip-thread, and induce weak magnetic fields. Since she was kept on clairvoyance-suppressants for so long, she often self medicates with alcohol and nicotine to avoid overstimulation.

Mia is outwardly sardonic and egotistical. She comes off as confident, but this is to hide her own feelings of inadequacy. She will say whatever's on her mind without filter, usually unaware of how her words impact the feelings of those around her. She understands social cues, she thinks they are stupid and largely ignores them. In rare moments, she expresses her desire to redeem herself and become a better person. Mia enjoys cooking, raw fish, anything apple flavored, and going to the beach.

Background:

Mia was created and born in the Mallory's Uzbek lab. From birth, she was raised there by various staff members as she underwent numerous tests of her clairvoyance. One particular nurse, Olma Safarova, became particularly fond of her, and acted as a mother figure to her during this time; she is the one who named her Hena, as her name up until this point had been a serial number. In actuality, Olma was her aunt investigating the disappearance of her estranged sister, Mia's mother.

When Mia was five, Olma staged an escape plan to get her out of the lab. Security, accompanied by Orville Mallory, finds them and shoots Olma, killing her. Mia becomes enraged and kills all who's present, including her father Orville. To avoid a public scandal, the lab is shut down, and Mia is adopted by Orville's adult daughter (and Mia's half sister) Cassandra Mallory. This is when she is officially renamed Mia.

Now living in Liverpool, Mia is put through more tests and experimentation. Due to her detailed insight into the brain from her clairvoyance, she is trained under Cassandra to become a neurosurgeon. Though she is passive, she is administered clairvoyance-suppressant drugs to keep her from escaping or otherwise being a threat. In the early 2000s when the Mallorys are still unable to produce another bicephalic chimera, Cassandra tasks Mia with doing research into conjugates.

After years of studies, Mia develops Base theory, and proposes that a new type of conjugate can be created. Using the egg of a bicephalic chimera (herself), Mia says that a functional clone can be created via pseudo-fertilization from electric stimulation. Though the initial findings are promising, all tests ultimately fail. Mia then discovers that only a certain type of electric stimulation can successfully produce a viable embryo: EBID, which needs to be harvested from a human brain.

While the Mallory scientists went about obtaining EBID, Oman Khurshid was hired as an equipment technician in 2009 to work in the Liverpool lab. Though they did not directly work with each other, they met by chance during Mia's smoke break. When testing equipment in her office needs repair, they form a friendship. She is especially interested in him and his life outside the lab, as she hasn't been allowed to leave Cassandra's custody.

After Cassandra decides that Oman will be a candidate for EBID harvesting and he accepts, Mia grows distant from him when he refuses to reconsider. She is forced to perform his craniotomy. Afterwards, when Cassandra gives her the option to choose which EBID donor to select for pseudo-fertilization, Mia decides to use Oman's as a result of their brief friendship. This fills her with guilt.

Over the next seven months, she takes care of and eventually carries the new conjugate, which has become known as a Mallory clone. She tries not to form an attachment to her, but eventually gives her the nickname Sam. Once she is born, she finally gains the agency to begin planning an escape. Before she can, however, Oman reappears, having been contacted by Sam, and breaks them out. He is critically wounded by Cassandra in the process, and Mia saves his life by performing emergency surgery.

While Oman is recovering, Mia takes them into the northern British countryside to hide from Cassandra. Now no longer on clairvoyance-suppressants, she uses her hypnosis to establish a living for them, notably by forging documents and stealing money. While Oman is content to stay hidden, Mia frequently travels both to keep the Mallorys off their trail, as well as experience the life she never got to live.

In 2029, Mia goes missing and is assumed dead.

Weekend Top Ten #544

Top Ten Psygnosis Games

Okay, there was a lot I was going to talk about this week – something DC-related would have been nice – but I can’t quite articulate my frustrations over the Batgirl cancellation, and my surprise at how much I enjoyed DC League of Superpets into a coherent list. So instead we’re relaxing by wallowing in nostalgia. It does mean two game-related lists two weeks in a row, but never mind.

When I was a wee lad, I didn’t know as much about the videogames industry as I do now, and so recognisable names became a much bigger deal. Ocean Software, US Gold, Team 17, Lucasfilm Games, were all imbued with a sense of power and mystique because I’d played games by them before. Even if a company like Ocean got a bit of a bad rap for its succession of film adaptations – sometimes fairly shonky ones – I always had a big soft spot for them because their glorious chromium logo adorned some of the earliest games I ever owned for my Amiga. And RoboCop 3 was the business; has there ever been a bigger gulf in quality between a great game and a shit film?

Anyway, one of the first companies I would get ridiculously excited about if their logo popped up whilst a game was loading was Psygnosis. A Liverpool-based developer, they were responsible for one of first games I ever played on an Amiga, Shadow of the Beast II, a deliriously difficult side-scrolling platform/adventure game that I thoroughly enjoyed to bits once I’d put the cheat on and couldn’t die anymore (you walk up to a bloke very early on and say to him “ten pints” – go on, try it out; I haven’t played the game for thirty years so it’s possible I’m mistaken, but I don’t think I am). Psygnosis became well-known for their gorgeous airbrushed cover art, often by Roger Dean, who also created their chrome-plated creepy owl logo. They were beautiful sci-fi vistas or horrific imagery, stuff that wouldn’t have looked out of place on a premium genre hardback, or possibly adorning the side of a VW van. These boxes – and remember, they were whacking great boxes back then – really stood out on the shelves of Electronics Boutique or, er, Chips in Middlesbrough (were there any other real game chains back then?).

Psygnosis ended up being bought by Sony and folded into the whole PlayStation Empire, becoming Studio Liverpool and turning into something of a Wipeout factory before getting shut down ten years ago. It was a sad end to one of the giants of 16-bit home computing, but that’s how these things go I guess; outside of huge American or Japanese companies, how many developers from the eighties are still really kicking around? Regardless, Psygnosis has a tremendous legacy and – of course – one game series in particular that transcends everything else. You know what I’m talking about. Let’s go!

Lemmings 2: The Tribes (Amiga, 1993): what else could it be? Lemmings is one of the greatest games and franchises of all time. Puzzling, hilarious, funny, addictive; one for the ages. And I do prefer the sequel as it’s more varied and colourful and user-friendly, but really either of the first two games (and their spin-offs and add-ons) could take this spot, masterpieces that they are.

Shadow of the Beast II (Amiga, 1990): an intriguing adventure game, with its puzzles and quests, that really taught me a lot about adventure games. Defining, for me, the early days of the Amiga, it helped me figure out what sort of games I liked. And whilst its difficulty is a bit bonkers it also helps that it’s gorgeous.

Hired Guns (Amiga, 1993): a unique first-person team-based RPG in which you control four characters at once via split-screen. This gameplay quirk made it really interesting, and technically it was impressive way back when, plus it had a really cool techno-western aesthetic. I think they remade it but no one cared.

Walker (Amiga, 1993): like a lot of games on this list, Walker had an interesting gameplay hook and visual aesthetic (and was also developed by DMA Design – funny that). This one saw you controlling a giant AT-ST-type vehicle, mooching around the level whilst strafing tiny soldiers. The micro-men, mere pixels in height, inspired a whole other game (Lemmings, you may have heard of it), but Walker is still dead good fun.

Agony (Amiga, 1992): I was never too much of a fan of those side-scrolling shoot-em-ups where you fly from left to right and, y’know, shoot things. Agony was a good example of the genre, though, and I enjoyed it. What I thought was really cool – apart from the typically good graphics – was that you essentially played as the Psygnosis owl. The one from the logo. Crazy, right?

Leander (Amiga, 1991): this feels like a much more obscure title but one that I had and really enjoyed as a kid, even if I was typically crap at it and almost certainly never progressed beyond the first level. Coming across like a more mainstream Beast, it’s a sprawling platform-adventure with an interesting mix of Japanese and Western influences. I remember getting sucked in to its more forgiving gameplay and relatively slow-paced action.

Puggsy (Amiga, 1993): I think this gained a bit more favour as a Mega Drive title but – obviously – I only had it on the Amiga. An intriguing adventure that was built around acquiring objects and using them correctly, my memories of it are of a bigger budget Dizzy with its own quirky style.

Bill’s Tomato Game (Amiga, 1992): now maybe this is the really obscure title. A colourful puzzle game about, er, tomatoes, named after its developer, as you try to rescue your girlfriend (a tomato, natch) from a squirrel by finding the right route out of tricksy levels. I remember it being a surprising delight and having a sense of humour right out of Lemmings.

Destruction Derby (PC, 1995): oh my god, a PC game! Although most people probably think of it as a PlayStation game or something. Anyway, in the infancy of 3D graphics, there were lots of driving games (good for showing off fancy visuals) but one thing I’d always wanted was just to properly knacker the cars. This game – although I remember it as being rather slight – scratched that itch, really letting you bash and smash to your heart’s content. Not quite Carmageddon in its vehicular violence but a pleasing diversion nonetheless.

Benefactor (Amiga, 1994): another sort-of puzzle game that required you to save a host of anonymous plebs, this differentiates itself from the Lemmings mould by having you control a bigger guy who has to essentially prepare the level to let your mini-mates pass safely. Carved out its own unique niche in my psyche with enough style and difference to get its hooks in.

What no Wipeout? I guess not having a PlayStation in the mid-to-late-nineties meant a sexy futuristic hovercar racer just didn’t have a fair chance of getting its claws into me when I could just, I dunno, keep playing Quake or something. Anyway, I think we can all agree that Psygnosis put out some cracking games in the Amiga era and beyond, and I really, really wish that Sony would do some kind of remaster of the first two Lemmings games and release it on Steam.

Depp v Heard: Warner Bros. Damage Control

As the Coronavirus Pandemic ultimately ends the 2020 movie season, it seems other forces are set to threaten the 2021 and even 2022 release schedule, but rather than a global life-threatening pandemic, this comes from the ongoing, highly-publisized domestic legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

This post will be predicting the state of play for the future careers of the two actors as well as the typhoon of trouble Warner Bros. find themselves in as they try to weather the storm they find themselves caught in as two of their biggest movie franchises find themselves in flux.

No More Grindelwald:

So yes, the latest headline in this ever-growing Depp v Heard battle is that Johnny Depp has been fired from the Fantastic Beasts movies in the wake of the actor’s libel case loss days ago.

Now clearly this is the direct action of Warner Bros. as all the headlines tend to include the words “fired” or “axed” rather than Depp himself stepping down, which is a very definitive difference as both Depp and Heard wanted to delay these court cases so they could get back to their respective roles which they have admitted they both enjoy.

Now to be honest, Johnny Depp in the role of Gellart Grindelwald has been tainted since the reveal of his casting in the first Fantastic Beasts movie. This was of course tainted by the fact that this legal battle was already going on but Depp was effectively vilified as the culprit in all this.

However, despite the very public controversy around the casting to the degree of a mass boycott petition for The Crimes of Grindelwald, for some fans like myself we enjoyed him in the role. It may not have been him back on the form of his glory days but considering his other work of late, his role in the Wizarding World franchise and his small yet crucial role in Murder on the Orient Express remind fans of when he was at the top of his game with the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Now that’s not to say Grindelwald is gone in the movies going forward. I mean yes these prequels are supposed to be about the history between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, but that doesn’t mean Grindelwald has to always be portrayed by Johnny Depp. He can change his face magically as he did in the first movie with Polyjuice Potion to look like Colin Farrell, a role by the way many fans believed he should have continued with, so why couldn’t he change his face again?

In fact it has been confirmed that Grindelwald will be recast as well as also being confirmed that Fantastic Beasts 3 has now been delayed due to this news from December 2021 to Summer 2022. I don’t understand how this franchise is still standing with all of this controversy...even without COVID the franchise is a hea

What Goes Around Comes Around:

Now I am not for one second siding with either Johnny Depp or Amber Heard in this battle, in fact I believe they are both at fault and the best way to resolve this with minimal damage prior to this libel case was for the two of them to both accept blame, get a divorce and move on from each other. However, Depp chose to sue a newspaper for liability and now we are where we are.

Why I am targeting this post at Warner Bros. specifically is because, in my opinion, as they publicly fired Depp from Fantastic Beasts, then there should also be some repercussions for Heard with Aquaman 2 unless the studio wants to be seen as siding with Heard in this ongoing case.

That being said, like Depp as Grindelwald I really enjoy Heard as Mera. That’s not me saying I like Heard, agree with Heard or anything like that. That is me doing what I always do which is not really paying attention to the artist’s personal life and simply focusing on the job they are hired to do.

The good thing about the Heard side of this argument is that Warner Bros. DC are already taking steps to potentially phase Mera out in the DCEU by introducing a new female character to Aquaman 2, that many fans believe will be Dolphin, as a potential new love interest for Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman. So unlike Depp’s Grindelwald who is a major pivotal part of the Fantastic Beasts movies, Mera, though essential to the Aquaman story for any DC fan, isn’t pivotal to the movies unfortunately.

DCEU Future:

Another linking factor that forms the unholy trinity creating the shitstorm for Warner Bros. is what to do with Ezra Miller in both Fantastic Beasts and at DC.

While maybe not as damaging to the franchises as the Depp v Heard case, or the J.K. Rowling controversy for the Wizarding World franchise, Miller has proven to be a problem child for Warner Bros. firstly as The Flash and then as Credence Barebone.

Now yes the final straw for many DC fans may have been the photographic/video evidence showing the actor throttling a civilian on a night out, but Miller has always been a wild card for any franchise given his somewhat unique artistic styling and wanting to put as much of himself into a role as possible.

Let’s face it, when we first saw him in Justice League as The Flash. We didn’t see Barry Allen, we saw Ezra Miller as The Flash. Now maybe the upcoming Snyder Cut will prove why Miller was originally cast in the role but I am putting my foot down onto my dislike of the portrayal by saying that Joss Whedon wanted Ezra Miller to fall onto Gal Gadot’s cleavage, Gal Gadot refused and they had to bring in a body double but Ezra Miller was still okay with it.

Am I saying that if DC fires Amber Heard they need to also fire Ezra Miller? No because not only has Ezra Miller been in the promotion of both the Snyder Cut and the upcoming Flashpoint movie, I feel it sets too negative a precedent of negative press or controversy equals being cut no matter how pivotal to the movie or show you are.

The Bright Side:

I do want to try and finish this on a lighter note because all there seems to be is doom and gloom at the moment. Not only has this happened to Depp and may potentially happen to Heard, but also it has been rumoured that Wonder Woman 1984 is set to once again be pushed back from its dual Christmas Day cinematic/PVOD release date to June 2021.

However, while I feel if Heard was to be cut from Aquaman 2, the movie would also be pushed back which would benefit both it and Black Panther 2 which are both currently slated for the same year and Black Panther 2 strongly hinted at introducing Namor who is effectively Marvel’s Aquaman, we do still have The Batman in our sights and that movie is at least being teed up wonderfully.

It does pose some disappointment in the fact that Colin Farrell probably won’t return to the role of Grindelwald due to his role as The Penguin in The Batman, but there’s a reason Batman remains DC’s strongest property due to the fact in the entirety of DC’s multimedia history it is always Batman-related properties that thrive in movies, television and games.

I mean, in regards to Colin Farrell returning to the role, never say never to Warner Bros. wanting to I guess appease fans by bringing back one of the few good aspects of this Fantastic Beasts movies considering when the characters went from Percival Graves to Gellert Grindelwald fans were screaming for a reversal. Especially as both The Batman and Fantastic Beasts 3 are being filmed in Liverpool.

Overall, as has been said before, I feel the Depp/Heard case is very sensitive and tricky to navigate but how it’s affecting the two actors’ respective movies is the part where I feel we fans can step in. Not obviously change things but at least have our say.

A number of Women’s Championship clubs have expressed opposition to playing games behind closed doors, while the Football Association has raised the possibility of voiding the top two tiers of women’s football, Telegraph Sport understands.

The governing body has held regular meetings with clubs in the Women’s Super League and Championship to discuss the latest developments around coronavirus since play was halted on March 13th, but has still yet to make a decision on when play will recommence.

It is understood that initially, the FA was adamant that play would restart and were reluctant to discuss the possibility that it would not; now, they are discussing other avenues, including ending the leagues or different outcomes for the fully-professional WSL and the part-time Championship. Finishing both leagues, however, is believed to remain the FA’s preferred scenario.

The FA has still not informed its clubs of any discussions around support grants, solidarity funds or a post-lockdown TV deal that would guarantee teams much-needed financial support should play resume. There is a feeling among some Championship clubs that, without additional support, playing games behind closed doors is only financially viable for women’s teams that can rely on support from well-established men’s teams. Those that cannot are reluctant to bring back football without promise of a support package to pay players, and are wary that games without crowds could dent the long-term sustainability of women’s football.

Telegraph Sport understands the discussions around resuming the men’s National League have already discounted the possibility of playing games behind closed doors, deciding that lower-level men’s football couldn’t function without funds from gate attendances.

Most Championship clubs are also understood to be against proposals to finish the season at St George’s Park given the forecasted costs of travel and hotels to reach the FA’s Burton base. This plan could hold more promise for the WSL clubs: part of the reason neutral venues remain on the table is because the women's league calendar will have to reflect the men’s given the number of groundshares across both games. The St George’s Park solution would also benefit the clubs that hire their facilities and might otherwise have to extend their leases.

Meanwhile, Liverpool Women dismissed reports that they are in favour of ending the league now as inaccurate. A club spokesman said: “100 per cent, we have not said we think the league should end.”

The club has formed a working group of medical and operations experts that meet virtually once a week to assess whether it will be safe for players to resume training later this month.

There will be no relegation from the Women’s Championship following the FA’s decision to void tiers three and below in the women’s game. The league’s leaders, Aston Villa, are currently seven points clear of Sheffield United in second.

The Women’s Super League is less clear-cut. Manchester City are top and a point ahead of Chelsea but have played a game more. Arsenal are four points behind the leaders with a game in hand. Two Champions League spots are still up for grabs and there is no guarantee yet that there will not be relegation.

Myrna Loy (born Myrna Adele Williams; August 2, 1905 – December 14, 1993) was an American film, television and stage actress. Trained as a dancer, Loy devoted herself fully to an acting career following a few minor roles in silent films. She was originally typecast in exotic roles, often as a vamp or a woman of Asian descent, but her career prospects improved greatly following her portrayal of Nora Charles in The Thin Man (1934).

Born in Helena, Montana, Loy was raised in rural Radersburg during her early childhood, before relocating to Los Angeles with her mother in her early adolescence. There, she began studying dance, and trained extensively throughout her high school education. She was discovered by production designer Natacha Rambova, who helped facilitate film auditions for her, and she began obtaining small roles in the late 1920s, mainly portraying vamps. Her role in The Thin Man helped elevate her reputation as a versatile actress, and she reprised the role of Nora Charles five more times.

Loy's career began to slow in the 1940s, and she appeared in only a few films in the 1950s, including a lead role in the comedy Cheaper by the Dozen (1950), as well as supporting parts in The Ambassador's Daughter (1956) and the drama Lonelyhearts (1958). She appeared in only eight films between 1960 and 1981, after which she retired from acting.

Although Loy was never nominated for an Academy Award, in March 1991 she received an Honorary Academy Award in recognition of her life's work both onscreen and off, including serving as assistant to the director of military and naval welfare for the Red Cross during World War II, and a member-at-large of the U.S. Commission to UNESCO. Loy died in December 1993 in New York City, aged 88.

Loy was born Myrna Adele Williams on August 2, 1905, in Helena, Montana, the daughter of Adelle Mae ( Johnson) and rancher David Franklin Williams. Her parents had married in Helena in 1904, one year before Loy was born. She had one younger brother, David Frederick Williams (d. 1982). Loy's paternal grandfather, David Thomas Williams, was Welsh, and emigrated from Liverpool, England to the United States in 1856, arriving in Philadelphia. Unable to read or write in English, he later settled in the Montana Territory where he began a career as a rancher. Loy's maternal grandparents were Scottish and Swedish immigrants. During her childhood, her father worked as a banker, real estate developer, and farmland appraiser in Helena, and was the youngest man ever elected to serve in the Montana state legislature. Her mother had studied music at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, and at one time considered a career as a concert performer, but instead devoted her time to raising Loy and her brother. Loy's mother was a lifelong Democrat, while her father was a staunch Republican. She was raised in the Methodist faith.

Loy spent her early life in Radersburg, Montana, a rural mining community approximately 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Helena. During the winter of 1912, Loy's mother nearly died from pneumonia, and her father sent his wife and daughter to La Jolla, California. Loy's mother saw great potential in Southern California, and during one of her husband's visits, she encouraged him to purchase real estate there. Among the properties he bought was land that he would later sell, at a considerable profit, to filmmaker Charlie Chaplin for his film studio there. Although her mother tried to persuade her husband to move to California permanently, he preferred ranch life and the three eventually returned to Montana. Soon afterward, Loy's mother needed a hysterectomy and insisted Los Angeles was a safer place to have it done, so she, Loy, and Loy's brother David moved to Ocean Park, where Loy began to take dancing lessons. After the family returned to Montana, Loy continued her dancing lessons, and at the age of 12, Myrna Williams made her stage debut performing a dance she had choreographed based on "The Blue Bird" from the Rose Dream operetta at Helena's Marlow Theater.

When Loy was 12, her father died during the 1918 flu pandemic in November of that year. Loy's mother permanently relocated the family to California, where they settled in Culver City, outside Los Angeles. Loy attended the exclusive Westlake School for Girls while continuing to study dance in downtown Los Angeles. When her teachers objected to her extracurricular participation in theatrical arts, her mother enrolled her in Venice High School, and at 15, she began appearing in local stage productions.

In 1921, Loy posed for Venice High School sculpture teacher Harry Fielding Winebrenner as "Inspiration"; the full length figure was central in his allegorical sculpture group Fountain of Education. Completed in 1922, the sculpture group was installed in front of the campus outdoor pool in May 1923 where it stood for decades. Loy's slender figure with her uplifted face and one arm extending skyward presented a "vision of purity, grace, youthful vigor, and aspiration" that was singled out in a Los Angeles Times story that included a photo of the "Inspiration" figure along with the model's name—the first time her name appeared in a newspaper. A few months later, Loy's "Inspiration" figure was temporarily removed from the sculpture group and transported aboard the battleship Nevada for a Memorial Day pageant in which "Miss Myrna Williams" participated. Fountain of Education can be seen in the opening scenes of the 1978 film Grease. After decades of exposure to the elements and vandalism, the original concrete statue was removed from display in 2002, and replaced in 2010 by a bronze duplicate paid for through an alumni-led fundraising campaign.

Loy left school at the age of 18 to begin to help with the family's finances. She obtained work at Grauman's Egyptian Theatre, where she performed in what were called prologues, elaborate musical sequences that were related to and served as preliminary entertainment before the feature film. During this period, Loy saw Eleonora Duse in the play Thy Will Be Done, and the simple acting techniques she employed made such an impact on Loy that she tried to emulate them throughout her career.

While Loy was dancing in prologues at the Grauman's Egyptian Theatre, portrait photographer Henry Waxman took several pictures of her that were noticed by Rudolph Valentino when the actor went to Waxman's studio for a sitting. Valentino was looking for a leading lady for Cobra, the first independent project he and his wife Natacha Rambova were producing. Loy tested for the role, which went to Gertrude Olmstead instead, but soon after she was hired as an extra for Pretty Ladies (1925), in which she and fellow newcomer Joan Crawford were among a bevy of chorus girls dangling from an elaborate chandelier.

Rambova hired Loy for a small but showy role opposite Nita Naldi in What Price Beauty?, a film she was producing. Shot in May 1925, the film remained unreleased for three years; but stills of Loy in her exotic makeup and costume appeared in Motion Picture magazine and led to a contract with Warner Bros. There, her surname was changed from Williams to Loy.

Loy's silent film roles were mainly as a vamp or femme fatale, and she frequently portrayed characters of Asian or Eurasian background in films such as Across the Pacific (1926), A Girl in Every Port (1928), The Crimson City (1928), The Black Watch (1929), and The Desert Song (1929), which she later recalled "kind of solidified my exotic non-American image." In 1930 she appeared in The Great Divide. It took years for her to overcome this stereotype, and as late as 1932, she was cast as a villainous Eurasian in Thirteen Women (1932). She also played, opposite Boris Karloff, the depraved sadistic daughter of the title character in The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932).

In 1932, Loy began dating producer Arthur Hornblow Jr., when he was still married to his wife, Juliette Crosby. Prior to that, Loy appeared in small roles in The Jazz Singer and a number of early lavish Technicolor musicals, including The Show of Shows, The Bride of the Regiment, and Under a Texas Moon. As a result, she became associated with musical roles, and when they began to lose favor with the public, her career went into a slump. In 1934, Loy appeared in Manhattan Melodrama with Clark Gable and William Powell. When gangster John Dillinger was shot to death after leaving a screening of the film at the Biograph Theater in Chicago, the film received widespread publicity, with some newspapers reporting that Loy had been Dillinger's favorite actress.

After appearing with Ramón Novarro in The Barbarian (1933), Loy was cast as Nora Charles in the 1934 film The Thin Man. Director W. S. Van Dyke chose Loy after he detected a wit and sense of humor that her previous films had not revealed. At a Hollywood party, he pushed her into a swimming pool to test her reaction, and felt that her aplomb in handling the situation was exactly what he envisioned for Nora. Louis B. Mayer at first refused to allow Loy to play the part because he felt she was a dramatic actress, but Van Dyke insisted. Mayer finally relented on the condition that filming be completed within three weeks, as Loy was committed to start filming Stamboul Quest. The Thin Man became one of the year's biggest hits, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Loy received excellent reviews and was acclaimed for her comedic skills. Her costar William Powell and she proved to be a popular screen couple and appeared in 14 films together, one of the most prolific pairings in Hollywood history. Loy later referred to The Thin Man as the film "that finally made me ... after more than 80 films."

Her successes in Manhattan Melodrama and The Thin Man marked a turning point in her career, and she was cast in more important pictures. Such films as Wife vs. Secretary (1936) with Clark Gable and Jean Harlow, and Petticoat Fever (1936) with Robert Montgomery gave her opportunity to develop comedic skills. She made four films in close succession with William Powell: Libeled Lady (1936), which also starred Jean Harlow and Spencer Tracy; The Great Ziegfeld (1936), in which she played Billie Burke opposite Powell's Florenz Ziegfeld; the second Thin Man film, After the Thin Man (1936), with Powell and James Stewart; and the romantic comedy Double Wedding (1937). Loy married Arthur Hornblow in 1936 in-between filming the successive productions. She was later rumored to have had affairs with co-star Tracy between 1935 and 1936 while filming Whipsaw and Libeled Lady.

She also made three more films with Gable at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM): Parnell (1937) was a historical drama and one of the most poorly received films of either Loy's or Gable's career, but their other pairings in Test Pilot and Too Hot to Handle (both 1938) were successes. While working for MGM, Loy was outspoken about the studio's casting hierarchy, especially based on race, and was quoted as saying: "Why does every black person in the movies have to play a servant? During this period, Loy was one of Hollywood's busiest and highest-paid actresses, and in 1937 and 1938, she was listed in the annual "Quigley Poll of the Top Ten Money Making Stars," which was compiled from the votes of movie exhibitors throughout the United States for the stars who had generated the most revenue in their theaters over the previous year.

By the late 1930s, Loy was highly regarded for her performances in romantic comedies, and she was anxious to demonstrate her dramatic ability. She was cast in the lead female role in The Rains Came (1939) opposite Tyrone Power. She filmed Third Finger, Left Hand (1940) with Melvyn Douglas and appeared in I Love You Again (1940), Love Crazy (1941), and Shadow of the Thin Man (1941), all with William Powell.

On June 1, 1942, Loy divorced husband Hornblow in Reno, citing "mental cruelty" as the impetus for separating.[46] Five days after the divorce, she married John D. Hertz, Jr. an advertising executive and founder of Hertz Rent A Car, at his sister's home in New York City.[46] They remained married for two years, eventually divorcing in Cuernavaca, Mexico, on August 21, 1944, with Loy again citing mental cruelty.

With the outbreak of World War II the same year, Loy all but abandoned her acting career to focus on the war effort and began devoting her time working with the Red Cross.[48] She was so fiercely outspoken against Adolf Hitler that her name appeared on his blacklist, resulting in her films being banned in Germany.[49] She also helped run a Naval Auxiliary canteen and toured frequently to raise funds for the war efforts. Around 1945, Loy began dating producer and screenwriter Gene Markey, who had previously been married to actresses Joan Bennett and Hedy Lamarr.[46] The two were married in a private ceremony on January 3, 1946, at the chapel on Terminal Island, while Markey was serving in the military.

She returned to films with The Thin Man Goes Home (1945). In 1946, she played the wife of returning serviceman Fredric March in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). Loy was paired with Cary Grant in David O. Selznick's The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947). The film co-starred a teenaged Shirley Temple. Following its success, she appeared again with Grant in Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948).

In 1950, Loy co-starred with Clifton Webb in Cheaper by the Dozen (1950), which was a box-office hit, grossing $4.4 million in the United States. The same year, she divorced Markey. Her fourth and final husband was Howland H. Sargeant, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and president of Radio Liberty, whom she married on June 2, 1951, in Fort Myer, Virginia. Sargeant, a Presbyterian, wanted the marriage officiated in the church, but they were unable to do so due to Loy's recent divorce.

Throughout the 1950s, Loy assumed an influential role as co-chairman of the Advisory Council of the National Committee Against Discrimination in Housing. In 1948, she had become a member of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, the first Hollywood celebrity to do so. In 1952, she starred in the Cheaper by the Dozen sequel, Belles on Their Toes. In 1956, she appeared in The Ambassador's Daughter along with John Forsythe and Olivia de Havilland. She played opposite Montgomery Clift and Robert Ryan in Lonelyhearts (1958), Dore Schary's adaptation of Nathanael West's classic 1933 novel Miss Lonelyhearts. In 1960, she appeared in Midnight Lace and From the Terrace, but was not in another film until 1969 in The April Fools. In 1965, Loy won the Sarah Siddons Award for her work in Chicago theatre. Loy, a lifelong Democrat, publicly supported the election of John F. Kennedy in 1960.

After divorcing her fourth husband Sargeant in 1960, Loy relocated to 23 East 74th Street in Manhattan's Upper East Side. She later lived at 425 East 63rd Street. In 1967, she was cast in the television series The Virginian, appearing in an episode titled "Lady of the House". In 1972, she appeared as the suspect's mother-in-law in an episode of the television series Columbo titled "Etude in Black". In 1974, she had a supporting part in Airport 1975 playing Mrs. Devaney, a heavy-drinking woman imbibing Jim Beam and Olympia Beer mixed together; a foil to the character played by Sid Caesar. In 1975, Loy was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent two mastectomies to treat the disease. She kept her cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment from the public until the publication of her autobiography in 1987.

In 1978, she appeared in the film The End as the mother of the main character played by Burt Reynolds. Her last motion picture performance was in 1980 in Sidney Lumet's Just Tell Me What You Want. She also returned to the stage, making her Broadway debut in a short-lived 1973 revival of Clare Boothe Luce's The Women. She toured in a 1978 production of Alan Ayckbourn's Relatively Speaking, directed by David Clayton.

In 1981, she appeared in the television drama Summer Solstice, which was Henry Fonda's last performance. Her last acting role was a guest spot on the sitcom Love, Sidney, in 1982.

Her autobiography, Myrna Loy: Being and Becoming, was published in 1987. The following year, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center. Although Loy was never nominated for an Academy Award for any single performance, after an extensive letter-writing campaign and years of lobbying by screenwriter and then-Writers Guild of America, West board member Michael Russnow, who enlisted the support of Loy's former screen colleagues and friends such as Roddy McDowall, Sidney Sheldon, Harold Russell, and many others, she received a 1991 Academy Honorary Award "for her career achievement". She accepted via camera from her New York City home, simply stating, "You've made me very happy. Thank you very much." It was her last public appearance in any medium.

Loy died at age 88 on December 14, 1993, at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan during a surgery following a long, unspecified illness. She had been frail and in failing health, which had resulted in her being unable to attend the 1991 Academy Awards ceremony, where she was to receive a lifetime achievement Oscar. She was cremated in New York and her ashes interred at Forestvale Cemetery in her native Helena, Montana.
