Depuis mes débuts dans la vie professionnelle, j’ai (presque) toujours travaillé sur des projets d’espaces de vente : dessiner des stands, aménager des boutiques, espaces permanents ou mises-en-scène éphémères pour le lancement d’un produit, parfois des lieux mixtes où d’autres activités se mêlent au parcours du client via de l’exposition pédagogique, historique ou culturelle, une dégustation ou un atelier, ceci pour enrichir l’expérience, nourrir le lien avec la marque, favoriser la fidélité et stade ultime, transformer son client en « brand ambassador » tel que le décrit le jargon marketing, « augmenter »  la transaction marchande, et le simple acte de mettre un produit dans un sac.

Et le rôle du design de ces espaces, par la conception du parcours, des flux, du zoning, de l’organisation des produits dans l’espace – la science du merchandising : pas trop haut, pas trop bas, pas trop proche de l’entrée, espacement, répétition, etc. – est d’encourager et faciliter cet acte d’achat / de vente.

Dans une société repue d’offres – comme les centres urbains occidentaux – (Hella Jongerius parlait de « world of plenty ») la tâche se complexifie, il faut émerger d’une concurrence féroce. En fonction des secteurs et des types de distributions, les moyens diffèrent. Dans le secteur des biens « premium » comme la parfumerie par exemple, il faut miser sur l’impact visuel, le « eye-catching », mais aussi sur le story-telling, le message, l’histoire que la marque propose et la mise-en-scène pour se différencier, paraître unique.

Et puis ces dernières années, est arrivé … ou plutôt est revenu … – dans mon contexte urbain occidental - ce qui pour moi est le point de vente ultime : le point de vente atelier, ou plutôt l’atelier qui devient point-de-vente dans une séquence précise, une fois la production effectuée.

Avec le retour des commerces en -erie : brasserie, laiterie, collecterie, ressourcerie, distillerie … sur le podium des commerces alternatifs attractifs pour urbains en quête de sens, mais dans la lignée des traditionnelles boucheries, charcuteries, pâtisseries, blanchisseries, etc.

Post 2, Pgs. 111-138 Thinking With Type

On page 112 I got to learn that when centered text is breaking lines it’s called breaking for sense which was a new term to me, but makes sense so that each line gets its own individual chunk of space so what is being read is more pronounced to the reader. Some examples that were mentioned are like tombstone or wedding invitation. For the flush right/ragged left reminded me to be careful how to set up your columns because it mentioned that it can attract or repulse the reader, and when I was first introduced to Adobe Indesign, I would just start implicating type however it fits but then I’d be committing “type crimes” especially the issue with justified for long columns for magazines for example with narrow gaps. I really enjoyed seeing the work of other designers however and how they structured their type because it  brought attention to the fact to me that type doesn’t have to always be necessarily a right or wrong way like the Design by Januzzi smith, all of the edges are ragged and different in each paragraph but it flows and another thing was color! The yellow block put behind the text brought it all together, which is a design concept that I will think about now when structuring type. A design that I just thought was genius was the Hella Jongerius book by COMA, I would have never thought to use transparent paper but it creates such an aesthetic outline for the rest of the text. I believe it even creates more intrigue for the reader to read the next page because you get a glimpse of the words before hand.

Week 1 Task 2 - Case Study 1

I chose to include Woven System as one of my case studies because I loved the way the artist played with the different yarns and weaves and combined them into drawing pieces. Even though her work feels minimalistic the attention to detail is amazing. The artist structures each piece carefully choosing the yarns and adds a abstract look to each one which is pleasing to the eye. I am inspired with the abstract element in the artists work and I feel I could work in a similar way. I would love to use yarn and experiment with the patterns I find in The bridgewater photographs. I like the idea of using yarn to draw out lines and also link it to the idea of walking around the gardens and drawing out the experience. I am fascinated by her use of lines and if you look closer each layer is placed in a different direction and some of the yarns are thinner than others which looks like the lines have been faded out. I like how the artist included a bold area in the middle area of the art work which your eye is instantly drawn to. The woven systems makes me tempted to zoom in and look closer. The yarns and weave have been thought out and I think this because of the way the artist has constructed the piece to be.
