I've got another meme fic request to go along with the Living Hei Feizi Zhang Qiling. Now the Hei Xiazi x Xie Yuchen Heihua pairing gets to deal with their own snakes as Hei Xiazi inadvertently picks up something else with the blindness on that tomb raid.

It started with the Cockscomb Snakes flooding their tents constantly, to the complete exclusion of the other tents. The snakes don't feel like biting either Hei Xiazi or Xie Yuchen and would rather crawl into every nook and cranny of their bodies. Wanting to warm themselves and placing their eggs on top of their bodies.

Then the gigantic Yin Candle Dragon would close its singular eyes on the trip and approach Xie Yuchen in a manner not unlike a puppy. He made sure to scratch right behind the crystalline frills and under the littol leggy weggies.

The absolute last straw was the Albino Candle Dragon hitching an escape with Hei Xiazi after Gutongjing collapsed. Technically it was allowed to be a guest since it wasn't attacking anyone or inflicting pheromone visions on anyone. Xiazi nicknames this snake FeiFei (with the characters for 'luxuriant' and 'snowfall'. FeiFei happens to find itself interrupting intimate moments of Heihua. Snuggling with them in bed, the bath and at meals, demanding attention from both.

“How often can one person get kidnapped, honestly?”

For long hours, Xie Yuchen had waited, ears pricked up at the slightest sound, desperately awaiting rescue. He had, during the most boring and uncomfortable minutes, even tried to imagine the relief he would feel, his joy at seeing friendly, familiar faces, at feeling the sunlight on his skin again - that one might have been a little overdramatic, admittedly. It had only been a couple of days since he’d been captured and even less since he had been tied up in this small cell after kicking the gang leader in the teeth.

Whatever he had expected… was not this.

Keys rattled in the lock and that stupidly long silhouette appeared, leaning against the threshold, blowing a lock of scruffy hair away.

Xie Yuchen glared at it.

“Took you long enough.”

Hei Xiazi strolled into the cell and looked around like he was considering investment. At last, the shine of his glasses turned toward Xie Yuchen and a lazy smile spread over his lips.

“Behave yourself or it could take longer.”

Not for the first time, Xie Yuchen wiggled against his bonds, but with perhaps more intention than before. That’s what he should have done, he thought. Visualize that idiot, and the sheer annoyance would have burned the ropes away from him. Not that it was terribly effective at the moment, but it would have been worth a try, if only for the distraction.

“Untie me,” he ordered.

That was obviously the wrong thing to say.

It did bring the man closer - not too close, just out of kicking range, but close enough to see the droplets of blood drying on his cheek - and his smile widened as he took in the details of Xie Yuchen’s position.

“Why, and ruin such a promising view?”

Even through the dark lenses, Xie Yuchen saw the man’s eyes catalogue the scratches on his exposed knees, the creased and torn fabric of his clothes. Part of him wanted to straighten up out of reflex, another wanted him to watch and regret coming so late. He was sure that Hei Xiazi had come alone, too. Fucking action hero.

Xie Yuchen growled.

There was only a small bruise on the side of his face, but he knew when Hei Xiazi’s gaze reached it by the way his smile faltered. The man quickly recovered and flashed his teeth obnoxiously.

“In fact, the only way to improve this would be to add a muzzle to your pretty face.”

The answer brought a huffed laugh out of Xie Yuchen’s chest.

“What, am I a mutt like you to need one?”

Hei Xiazi took one of his bewilderingly fast steps and came to stand between Xie Yuchen’s thighs in less than half a second, bypassing all of his defenses at once. Xie Yuchen’s mouth fell open in a surprised gasp. With another infuriating grin, Hei Xiazi brought one of his disgusting fingers up to it and ran it along Xie Yuchen’s bottom lip before he could realize what was happening.

“Nah, you’re more of a show dog. All yappy and bitey.”

It took more time that he would admit for Xie Yuchen to react to the jab. Once his eyes refocused, he set them directly on Hei Xiazi’s face, took a deep breath and -

Bit into thin air with the sharp clack of teeth on teeth. At the last second, Hei Xiazi had removed the offending appendage, proving that he had at least some sense of self-preservation.

Too bad.

Xie Yuchen felt his own lips spread in a matching grin. He had been bored for too long, and if there was one thing that Hei Xiazi wasn’t, it was boring. Though he couldn’t see his eyes, Xie Yuchen knew they were sparkling with excitement like his. God, that idiot made him feel alive.

Hei Xiazi suddenly looked down, busying himself with extracting a knife from its belt holster and bending over Xie Yuchen’s shoulder to cut the ropes. From this close, Xie Yuchen couldn’t avoid his perpetual smell of leather and sweat and gunpowder, and it should have been unpleasant but it wasn’t, only the cold bump of dog tags against his exposed clavicle was, and even then, not so much.

There was a joke about domesticated mongrels to be made there but Xie Yuchen’s heart wasn’t in it anymore. What had the man done to him?

He could feel his respiration quickening, their chests flush against one another, bodies pressed together almost everywhere from shoulder to hip, and when Hei Xiazi pulled the knife decidedly through the last knot, jolting his wrists, Xie Yuchen felt his own heart miss a beat.

The cut ropes fell away from his hands with a soft rush and he took a split-second decision.

“Kiss me,” he commanded.

His rescuer startled and straightened up, holding the knife edge down and away from their bodies on reflex. Xie Yuchen saw him blink through the glasses, mouth slack with surprise and god, he looked dumb.

It was Xie Yuchen’s favorite look.

He waited a few more seconds for the knife to be safely back into its holster and stood, taking the man’s jaw firmly into his own hands.

“Unbelievable. I have to do everything myself here.”

Before he could act on his impulse, Hei Xiazi’s hand had shot to his waist and pulled him into a messy kiss.

Hm. Maybe he should get kidnapped more often.

Summary:

I wrote this fic for @mnemonicmadness-blog for the Hurt/Comfort Exchange, this fic has been my absolute baby. I started working on it almost immediately after getting my assignment and it just... consumed my existence for the duration. It was one of those stories that just had to get out of me once I got the idea for it and of everything I’ve written, it’s probably one of the ones I’m most proud of. And I just realized I never shared it here. Oops? ;D So yeah... it’s a roller coaster, but I tried to write it so it would be comprehensible even if you haven’t seen Dollhouse, so I hope you’ll give it a try? ^_^

My dear recipient, the day assignments went out, I opened your letter and read that sentence and all I could think was "IT SURE DOES" and "YOU'RE RIGHT AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT." And this AU then absolutely consumed me for the next two months. I cannot thank you enough for planting this idea in my head, because writing this fic has been exhilarating and possibly the most fun I've had writing in a while. A few notes on setting: This fic is a fusion with the TV show Dollhouse, but I've tried to write it so that people not familiar with that canon can still understand what's happening. It is still set mostly within DMBJ novel and Ultimate Note canon, just with the Dollhouse framework. For November Prompts - Day 11 "Shooting stars"

Shen Wei had to admit that Wu Xie was correct. If he were to attempt to recover his pendant himself, it would be easier for him to be killed or imprisoned again and the contents of the pendant discovered by Hell's Court than for him to succeed. But what would become of Zhao Yunlan now if Shen Wei still couldn't even get close to him without causing him harm, if he lost Wu Xie so soon? Once, under a sky as starry as tonight, Shen San had told Shen Wei that he could make wishes if he saw shooting stars.

Everyone DMBJ + Shen Wei has been working very well to me. I hadn't antecipate how good would be to bring these characters together, since I mostly put Zhao Yunlan to interact with DMBJ boys sjkksjs From Humor to Angst, it's been really great to work with them all.
