Diving into Heather Fire Emblem
So Heather Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn is a character with very little screen time but as Fire Emblem's first 100% canon lesbian she has always had a special place in my heart even before I was out or really looking for representation I was drawn to this woman and her affection for other women. Today, I want to dive into her character, my reading of her and why I think she is a really great character who has potential to be a truly amazing character if she was ever given the spotlight and focus she deserves in some kind of Remake.
Heather is a poor woman, raised in the rural areas of Crimea which of the Beroc [This world's humans] nations is one of the more peace loving but least wealthy nations. Heather has a sickly mother at home, one who she cares for deeply. In her caring for her mother her job a thief has a strict purpose, bring money home for mom, take care of her, even if you have to get into riskier situations to get that money. It is in her mother's illness that Heather knows she must go out boldly and runs into the events of Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn.
If she dies she cries “Mother... Forgive me... I...lied... I stole... And this...is my punishment...” showing her mother doesn't know how she cares of her or the lengths she goes to to tend to her mother lying about how she makes the living for the pair of them. This speaks to a core element of the character, she is a soft hearted woman, she cares for her mother a lot and would do anything for her and she learned that in this world she needed to lie and steal to survive. Heather is a compassionate survivor who wears the masks she needs to wear in order to make it in the world.
As mentioned earlier one of the most notable things about Heather is her position as Fire Emblem's first canon lesbian a positioned she would be alone in until Fire Emblem Three Hope's Monica entered the screen 15 years later. This means something in her own world as well though, while the land of Tellius more certainly seems a little more inclusive in terms of women's places in society that does not mean queerness has been elevated into being a norm. For the most part we don't know much about queerness in the continent of Tellius we see through Heather that there is still heteronormative expectations at work for common women. Kyza's supports also imply at least a small pressure for people to be a bit more private about their sexuaity and gender.
Heather is hit on by men and likely has been hit on by men as a fairly traditionally attractive, unmarried adult woman for some time. She learned how to manipulate men into getting meals and other things from them outside of just robbing them but her manipulation is totally harmless, it is men doing things for the expectation of something Heather has never promised or even implied, simply a man's expectations for women. We know Heather has no history of abuse from an interview question where it was also affirmed she is simply a lesbian, that is just her nature and that she was never abused. So this kindness comes not from a place of trauma but in a place of solidarity with other women. We can see that the harassment of men is a factor for her though from her ability in the fire emblem TCG "Buffoonish men are in for a thrashing!" which shows how much she is just done with men being an asshole to her.
Unlike the men of the world her love for women comes with no expectation that they'll romance her, she likely thinks she is the only woman who likes other women, that she will be alone in her desires. So she simply works to make pretty women happy, content to give them a small flirt and a gift then leave them to do their own thing. Just getting to see a pretty woman is what she wants from a desire to see Princess Elenica and see if she lives up to the stories to wanting to help women like Nepheene and Illyana. She knows both that her taking care of her mother most come first but also that she's unlikely to be able to meet another woman to love.
I don't think it's an accident that the two women we see her be most into are bother fellow commoners when you look at Heather a a woman who is focused on solidarity between women. Heather's mechanics in Fire Emblem Cipher tend to lean on her attraction to women as well having women based abilities. In fact one of her abilities is called "For the smiles of girls!" showing that what she is doing is simply to see another woman smile. The end goal isn't marriage, isn't sex, isn't a relationship but just to see other women smile. This places her as a woman who is deeply rooted in community with other women and solidarity with them.
All of this comes from so little in the game and card game but I think together it paints a picture of an extremally kind woman with a roughish slant. She can be a scoundrel but only to people who deserve it and she is willing to steal and blackmail but it's always for a woman who is in need. At the end of the game Heather returns home to her mother, she lies and says she won't go be a thief again but she makes sure her mother is taken care of for the rest of her mother's life. She has no paired endings and is left alone at the end of it, proving that her own assumption is correct that she wouldn't find love so instead she would settle for smiles.
I want the best for Heather and I wish her love with many women. In my head she has a nice polycule to go see and helps nurse her mom to good health but regardless I think she has so much potential that was not explored thanks to Radiant Dawns bad support system and in general just being a minor character in a very massive cast. I love her and I hope I showed a bit of what draws me to her and why I think she is so special. If you enjoyed and want more, let me know and maybe I'll do more character deep dives. Little ending note here, I wrote this before Heather got announced for FEH! I am so excited and I will totally be listening to her voice lines and stuff and seeing if there is any more gold about her, maybe I'll update this if they have something I feel adds to my reading but as it looks like now it's same old lesbian Heather being gay for Nephenee and women in general.

Why so many mentions of Barb in S4? Because it's not just about Nancy
@chirpsythismorning @lilitblaukatz I finally have a theory. I didn't understand what all those mentions meant until I found another one in 4x01.
A hidden reference, in a school project, to Barbara Henry, the woman who teached little Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to attend the all-white William Frantz Elementary School, New Orleans. Barbara, Henry and William. And El had Henry as a mentor...
EDIT (spoiler of The First Shadow) There's another mention in . The name of main character of the play in the play (Joyce's play) the Dark of the Moon, is Barbara Allen.
So, if most of these Barb mentions/references are connected to Will and El, maybe she's not just important for Nancy's arc, but the writers are also using her story to hide hints about Will and El's story.
I talk about the references here and here. For example, Lenora is in Santa Barbara County, the hint being 805, the area code number on the Surfer Boy Pizza van. There are two Barbaras in Brenner's crossword puzzle, the day of the massacre. This means twin imagery= Willel (and Henry/Edward) and maybe different timelines.
Another twin imagery is in S2. The owls.
Also, Rick's house, where Eddie is hiding, is at 2121, Holland RD. Barbara Holland. 2121, another twin imagery, and 12 mention (the number associated with Will), but reversed. Rick is a reference to Dr Richard Brenner, mentioned in two articles in S1 (here). One of them is The boy who came back to life. The kids also say that there are 12 Ricks... I don't think these are coincidences.
So, S1 is all about the boy in the UD and the girl who escaped from the lab. Brenner refers to them as the boy and the girl. Will and El, the keys to save the world. In fact, this is the first question Joyce asks after Will's vanishing: 'Where are they?' (the keys) After they showed a key on the wall and keys on the table in Hopper's house.

Also, close up of the number of Hopper's badge, in his first scene: 380 (11) Imo, a hint that Will and El are the keys, and Joyce and Hopper are their parents.
But S1 is also about finding Will and another girl, Barb. So my theory is that Barb represents El and the writers hid some important hints in their parallels.
The boy and the girl
Barb is bleeding when she's taken to the UD, and her attack is different from what happens to Will. But she's attacked right after the scene in Will's room, where Should I stay or should I go starts playing, and the light gets brighter, something that only happens when El and Vecna use their powers. Also, Joyce sees the Demogorgon in the wall. They connected Barb to Will.
Another connection. El finds them in the void, and Joyce helps her. She helps El to find the boy and the girl, a parallel with her trying to find the keys in 1x01. And if Will is one of the keys, Barb represents the other key, El.
If this is true, what are the hints about Will and El's story?
1. Water. They find Will's fake body in the quarry, and in S1 there are random shots of lakes. Something bad happened in the past (more here and here)
Barb is taken in a pool, and water is important in the show, but it's mostly associated with danger/death. They mention another death in the quarry in 1976. Will has the first vision of the UD in 1x08, when he's washing his hands, and a vision of the Mind Flayer after he washes them in S2. El sees Heather in the bathtub, Billy sees the Mind Flayer in the shower. The song when Hopper and Joyce revive Will (I don't want to swim forever... When it's cold I'd like to die- the same song that plays when Max dies). And Owens says that El is going to drown in the water tank.
This scene in S2 also seems to hint at a parallel between El and Maria's drowning scene in the movie Frankenstein.

And after the shot of Maria walking towards the lake, they show the radio and the number 11. Maybe this means that in the past El died, too, and was revived?
Also, the first time Will communicates with Joyce, she only hears him breathing. Then she tells Hopper that she knows her son's breathing. But in 1x08 Will is not breathing. In S2, when he sees the storm, he feels frozen, like when you can't breath or move or do anything. He says it again in S3, three times. In S2 Becky says that Jane wasn't breathing, and the first thing Terry says to El is: Breath.
And this is also connected to the other big hint hidden in Barb's story.
2. The official "cause" of her death, the experimental chemical asphyxiant (so she couldn't breath) is a parallel with Agent Orange and a hint about the real connection between Willel and Hopper
In S3, Will, El, Hopper and Joyce are all connected to the word orange. I didn't notice it when I watched S3 years ago, because I didn't know Hopper's backstory, but now...
Robin sees a pretty girl with read hair and says: 'Twelve o'clock!' Orange and 12 mention. Will.
Then El explodes the cup of another girl. Curiously, another redhead. Imo, another twin imagery that connect the two scenes. Also, there are four cups: Hopper, Joyce, Will and El. And the guy's outfit reminds me of a lab orderly. (I'm not forgetting Jon. I just thinks he is Lonnie's son)
In this shot the word orange is behind Lucas, but he's telling Hopper that the Mind Flayer destroyed his cabin: Hopper's connection to the events of 1959 and the curse are haunting him and his family?
Then my favorite part, because it connects all of them to Agent Orange and the keys.
Murray gives Jon and Nancy the keys of his house.
Then we see one of the keys, Will, with Joyce. When she hugs him he says that he can't breath.
And even when the camera moves on Hopper and El, we can still hear him saying 'I'm suffocating'.

And here. Billy (William), El and the Mind Flayer/Henry, the other person connected to the curse.
The reason why I decided to analyze Barb's connection to Will and El is a strange detail in S4.
When El blames Brenner for all the deaths, the flashback shows Bob's death first, then Barb's. But in 4x02 the journalist says that it all started with Barb's death. I'm not sure what this "error" means. The only thing I could think of is the score at the Arcade in S2.
1st, 75 (12) 2nd 65 (11)
11 comes before 12 but in the Dig Dug score it's second. Barb dies before Bob, but in the flashback they show her death after his. Maybe this is also about something in Will and El's past? There's still a lot to analyze.
And, of course, Barb is very important for Nancy's arc, too. I just noticed a connection to other characters and wanted to see what it could mean.

LGBTA Headcanons for the Tellius Cast
Now that I’m replaying PoR, I can’t stop thinking about the characters, so here are some LGBTA headcanons:
Ike is gay and also on the ace spectrum. Due to comphet, he doesn’t realize that he experiences attraction to men (however infrequently) until late into the events of Radiant Dawn. I feel like being around a bunch of beast laguz (who I headcanon are more open about sexuality), Ike finally gets a clue.
Soren is gay, and 100% in love with Ike. His entire character arc in PoR is (unintentionally or otherwise) a metaphor for coming out.
Ranulf is bisexual, which I headcanon as being more common among laguz. It’s not necessarily that there is a higher percentage of bisexual people, but there is so little stigma about sexuality that laguz are more likely to be open about their bisexuality.
Kieran is definitely gay, though I doubt he understands it. He is misinterpreting his feelings for Oscar, like that meme about sending a letter to a girl you have a crush on to tell her to leave your school. In fact, Oscar probably figures out Kieran’s true feelings before Kieran does. He is deep in denial.
Oscar is bisexual, though not open about it. He put his entire life on hold to look after his brothers, so he’s definitely not even looking for romance in the events in PoR. And while he bonds with Kieran in PoR, I don’t think it’s until RD that Oscar’s feelings turn romantic. I like to imagine that, post-RD, when Oscar re-enlists in the army, he finally confesses to Kieran.
Nephenee is a lesbian, but suffering from comphet just as badly as Ike. It’s not even until she meets Heather that she realizes that girls can like other girls, and that opens up a whole can of worms for Nephenee. It takes her a long time to untangle her thoughts, but post-RD, Heather and Nephenee return to Ohma, and live out their sapphic dreams of living on a farm with their dozens of rescue animals.
Mia is aro/ace. She may be a romantic, but only in the sense that she dreams of being a dashing hero, going on adventures, and having epic duels at dawn with a fated rival. She has never been interested in dating or marriage, and doesn’t understand why everyone else cares about it so much. But she tries her best to be supportive, nonetheless!
Tibarn is bisexual, and Reyson is gay. I imagine that their feelings for each other have remained mostly unspoken by the start of PoR. Perhaps they are reluctant to bridge the gap, unsure of how it will affect their friendship. By RD, however, they are 100% sharing a bed, in love and not at all secretive about it. I like to think that seeing them together was the beginning of Ike’s gay awakening. At first, he’s confused why they are sharing a tent, and he asks Ranulf, who is just like. Is that a joke? And Ike gets his first lesson on sexuality!
Sigrun and Tanith are in a relationship by the start of PoR. In the beginning, Sigrun was a person Tanith greatly admired, aspiring to be as strong as her. Once they began looking after Sanaki together, romance between them blossomed, though due to their positions, they have to keep it private. (Plus, I doubt Begnion is super queer-friendly.)
Lucia is a gallant, charming woman, and I imagine that she has many admirers of all genders. Lucia herself is bisexual, but she is married to her job above all else, and doesn’t have relationships that last longer than a few months. She becomes Melior’s foremost serial heartbreaker.
This post is getting super long and I am getting tired, but I may continue this at another point. I clearly hold too many LGBTA headcanons…

HEIGHT MATH
This shit ain't fun, I’ve been cross referencing head canons with sprites (who is taller than who rather than counting pixels) and I’m quickly coming to the conclusion that where scale is concerned canon has no idea what it's talking about.
My saving grace has been Brom, don't know Zihark’s height? Oh there's a screenshot of him talking to Brom
Nephenee and Heather? Oh look they're both taller than Brom, I have plausible deniability to make Heather 6’0”
Nailah? The game is wrong, she’s 6’4” because I said so (she probably would have been taller than like 6’0” max RD Ike if Brom were there, I have faith in him)

Secret cave under Mount Charleston, 1962
Crews working on turning Kyle Canyon Rd (SR 157) from a dirt road into a two-lane highway discovered a cave. Sheriff’s Jeep Posse members Orvy Clark and Wayne Kinnie, also a Review-Journal photographer, made their way to cave to report on the discovery for The Nevadan magazine. Kinnie described a room is “as large as a gymnasium” with a 50-foot ceiling draped stalactites and stalagmites. The cave had steep ledges. The photographer became trapped during the excursion and had to be rescued. But the location of the cave – somewhere in the area of Lee Canyon and Deer Creek Rd (SR 158) - was ultimately kept a secret.
Explorers found that the cave's ceiling was fractured and unstable, creating a safety hazard. Sometime between ‘62 and ‘65 - sources vary - entry to the cavern was sealed with a concrete plug. It now falls under the Federal Cave Resource Protection Act of ‘88.

so i finally picked RD back up and i just finished 3-5. couldn’t get the meteor cause i went up there too late + my heather has 18 atk, but i did make a separate save file for it so i can try again if i need to
is the meteor worth it? i don’t have any other far range tomes and ofc i’m going for the soren shit so i need something to attack miccy with
i was considering just doing rescue stuff with haar and/or the hawks but idk if it’s better to just try and get meteor

I love how every corner of the city carries with it the memory of a moment that feels like a lifetime in and of itself. NE on First between The Postal Museum and Union Station is an old haunt that always creeps up unexpectedly. Euclid occupies a very specific part of my mind. Columbia Rd. for Heather. Glover Park; something like home. left my heart on wisconsin. the whole of Rhode Island Ave.... from Logan Circle all the way up into the state of Maryland is a like a timeline marking the million versions of me I had been back then.
Baby-me grew up on visits to the mall and Georgetown... with the occasional late night stop at McCormick's in downtown to pick up my dad's child support check for me.... Ventures that penetrated DC only an arms length from home. A thether I'd never cut even after having lost my innocence just a couple years later and a couple blocks away. umbilically tied to the idea that I couldn't survive in the city alone, even though I did, night after night (nevermind that I'd been surviving since age 4).
These memories sting just as much as they tingle. I hope I can go back. grieve what I was and what I never became and confront the potential that still persists.
I miss everyone and everything and no one and nothing.

Most Wanted Engage DLC stuff
Okay, I did my smart brain, what I think the Engage DLC will be but now it's time for brain off just what I want to see in Emblem Bracelets including skins I wanna see for characters already announced that I just hope are already in game.
I think we should get Heather or Yuri or Niles or Rhajhat or Doretha for being land mark queers in the games.
I think we need some kind of Laguz, it would just be cool to have a Laguz, any Laguz would be cool but the coolest Laguz and most profitable is Naliah as shown by FEH.
I think Elenica should be in the game as the 3rd lord in RD and with the other two already in, you know she just makes sense.
Minverva is such a huge thing in the games I'd love her and I just want Florina, I just want her.

Bret Ian McAfee, age 54, of Townsend, DE, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on June 15, 2023. Bret served as a Trooper with the Delaware State Police. Before graduating from the police academy, Bret earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from attended Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC.
During his career as a State Trooper, he began his journey as a member of the 65th DSP Recruit class on March 16, 1996. Bret was assigned to Troop 3 patrol, where he excelled in his role and even trained numerous recruits along the way. In 2010, he joined the Critical Incident Stress Management Team (CISM) and Conflict Management Team (CMT), further showcasing his commitment to his profession. Throughout his career Bret was a constant presence at Troop 3, where he became one of the longest-serving Patrol Troopers. Master Corporal Bret McAfee 962 last day worked was on June 1, 2023, after serving for over 27 years. He received his final transfer and is now serving on Eternal Patrol. His loving family always sent Bret off on his shift with “Come home safe” now Bret is eternally “Safely Home.” He served God, his church, Fairwinds Baptist Church, Bear, DE where he served for many years as a deacon, his family, and his state honorably.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Rachel (Mallonee) McAfee, whom he married on October 18, 1997; his beloved daughter, Lauren Rileigh; his mother, Janet I. (Geary) McAfee of Danville, PA; his brother, Sean (Lolita); sister, Heather (Carl) Cahill; brother, Brandon; brother Ryan (Rebecca); sister, Tiffany; and nieces and nephews. Bret was preceded in death by his father, Terry K. McAfee.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 27, 2023, from 10 AM-1PM followed by the celebration of life service with Active-Duty Honors by the Delaware State Police at Fairwinds Baptist Church, 801 Seymour Rd, Bear, DE, officiated by Pastor Carlo DeStefano. Committal service will be Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 12 Noon at Jacob's Church Cemetery, Paxinos, PA, near his childhood home. Arrangements are by Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, Newark, DE.

Leigh plays Tellius prt 22
It's time for part 2 at long last! Though, I can't help but feel like "intermission" is a more apt name for this section, since it's far shorter than the 3 other parts. But name aside, I am happy to see some familiar faces.
Elincia's struggle to gain respect and recognition from the nobles is so frustrating to watch. I do not blame Ike and company from nope-ing out of that situation. Even so, while their intention was to help Elincia, instead they've essentially abandoned her. Thankfully, Elincia has plenty of friends who are there to support her, such as Marcie.
I didn't use her in PoR, but I think I might use her in RD, depending on her growths. Historically, I have a hard time keeping pegasus knights alive, but I love Marcia as a character too much to not at least try to keep her on the team.
Can Haar actually talk to his wyvern, or is he being funny here? Can all dracoknights talk to their wyverns? Why is this aspect of the game never explored? We really never learn much of anything about wyverns and pegasi. How are they chosen? Also, we learned from PoR that pegasi can live a long, long time. Is the same true for wyverns?
Anyway, I breezed through this map with ease. Elincia is basically invincible during the prologue, and Marcia didn't deal much damage, but she dodged nearly every attack aimed at her.

I can only imagine what Ike would say if he was around to hear that. Yeardley, you are very, very lucky he wasn't.
It's the lesbians!! Poor Nephenee took such a rough beating here, but I was determined to get her to talk to Heather as soon as possible. I took my time on this map, mainly because I wanted to get Neph as much exp as possible. Also, I love those cows up on the righthand side of the above pic.
It's Ludveck time! I'm sad we don't get to brutally murder him the way we did Jarod, but whatever. Also, because of Jello's playthru, I couldn't help but read all his lines with a Southern gentleman accent. It just fits him so well. I hate seeing him flirt with Lucia here, especially knowing what will happen later.
Though, I do have to wonder why Lucia thought this plan wouldn't rouse suspicion. She brought several laguz (of different types, no less) to Ludveck's territory for the sake of sampling their berries? Yeah, sure, nothing suspicious about that.
I also have to wonder why Ludveck is keeping confidential documents in a random cave outside of his manor. Surely his manor would be better guarded?
Oh, Elincia...
I really feel for her here. She's just been put into this impossible situation. But I suppose that's what makes her character arc so compelling.
Aaaand that's the first half of part 2 of Radiant Dawn completed. I can't believe it's almost over.
But I'm excited, too. I am missing the Greil Mercs so badly.
