In May 2021 Muhammad Abu Hattab lost 10 family members in an air raid strike on a refugee camp, surviving with his brother and 5 month old child, and now in 2023 he and 10 *more* members of his family were killed, it looks like ending not just his family line but the Hattab name. He was a reporter covering Israel's actions in Gaza and had just returned home from a live broadcast when his home was destroyed in an airstrike the IDF is denying even happened. When the news of his death was given to Palestine TV Journalist Salman Al Bashir, Al Bashir broke down crying on air and ripped off his press helmet and vest.

I can't help but feel like if people had cared enough the first time, maybe some intervention could have happened but I know that's not how world governments operate and it's disgusting....

houria | حـ(و)ـرية, an experimental film directed by raafat hattab, intercuts between a violinist (boodi el esawi) playing on a beach at manshiye who is joined unexpectedly by a mermaid (played by raafat hattab himself), a person getting their chest tattooed, and an interview with hattab’s grandmother, yousra, talking about her parents’ flight from their home in jamaseen al-garbi when she was a baby, during the 1948 nakba (“catastrophe”), during which thousands of palestinians were killed and an estimated 700,000 were displaced because of Israeli ethnic cleansing. The gender fluidity of hattab’s mermaid, the permanence of the tattoo, and the impermanence of palestinian life and homeland in yousra’s story come together to illustrate the paradoxes and grief of dislocation that palestinians face daily. - deepa's full review, including content notes at the end

Palestine TV correspondent Salman Al-Bashir throws his press vest and helmet to the ground live on air moments after his colleague Mohammad Abu Hattab was martyred in an IOF airstrike on his home in Khan Younis.

In 2013, Weinstein pleaded guilty to running a $200 million real estate Ponzi scheme. In 2012 and 2013, while he was out on bail for that Ponzi scheme, he did another financial scam involving “purported sales of pre-IPO Facebook shares and Florida real estate”; he pleaded guilty to that one in 2014. He was sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison for all of this, but in January 2021 President Donald Trump commuted his sentence and let him out of prison. I don’t know why Trump let him out, but possibly he admired Weinstein’s moxie and sense of humor and wanted to see what else he’d get up to.

That faith in him was richly rewarded yesterday, when Weinstein was charged by the US Securities and Exchange Commission and federal prosecutors in New Jersey with doing a new Ponzi scheme in the two years since he left prison. Pre-IPO Facebook shares were very much the current thing in 2012, before Facebook went public, but in 2021 through 2023 the things were apparently:

» “In or around late 2021, Optimus [one of Weinstein’s companies] started raising money directly from a small number of investors to finance purported transactions related to COVID-19 medical supplies.”

» “In or around May 2022, WEINSTEIN (posing as Mike Konig) asked CC-1 and CC-2 [two unnamed alleged co-conspirators] to raise money from investors to finance the purchase and delivery of three million first-aid kits (‘FAKs’) to USAID to be distributed to the people of Ukraine during the Russia-Ukraine war (the ‘FAK deal’).”

» “In or around May 2022, WEINSTEIN (posing as Mike Konig), asked CC-1 and CC-2 to raise additional money to finance Company-1’s purchase of 100 million N95 masks (the ‘N95 Mask deal’).”

» “Similarly, in or around early August 2022, WEINSTEIN (posing as Mike Konig) asked CC-1 and CC-2 to raise money to finance the purchase of approximately 29 shipping containers of baby formula from [alleged co-conspirator Alaa Mohamed] HATTAB’s company, Hattab Global, in order to capitalize on supply chain issues which had created a shortage in baby formula (the ‘Formula deal’).”

Just pick a thing in the news, and he was allegedly pretending to supply it. Of course prosecutors say he was not actually doing any of these things and was instead stealing the money

a poem for yousra and for palestine

i am not palestinian; this is a poem to express my solidarity, grief, outrage, and everlasting hope for palestine and the palestinian people across the world. it is inspired by queer palestinian filmmaker raafat hattab’s short film houria حـ(و)ـرية (it's seven minutes, highly recommend watching it) and dedicated to his grandmother yousra, who is featured in the film.

A POEM FOR YOUSRA AND FOR PALESTINE the merperson of jaffa يَافَا, the bride of the sea carries what's left of the home that was stolen from them in their leather-cloth tail wherever they swim. how else can they carry it? how else to keep it fresh and close? the merperson carries what's left of their home to the beach that was al-manshiyya المنشية to the beach that was al-mas’udiyya المسعودية to the beach that was al-jammasin al-gharbi الجماسين الغربي to the beach that was al-shaykh muwannis الشيخ مونس to the beach that was ijlil al-qibliyya إجليل القبلية to the beach that was ijlil al-shamaliyya إجليل الشمالية to the beach that was al-haram الحرم and perhaps to beaches further to homes stolen from them and homes stolen from their neighbors the homes that were theirs. we all of us carry our homes in our bodies in our bones, in our veins, on our skin but most need not swim back in time to return dragging our homes wet on the sand behind us.

The past few days have seen escalated bombing by the IOF. Civil Defense first responder Nooh Al-Shaghnobi documents his team’s response to the bombing of the Al-Hattab family home in Al-Shawa Square. He reports that 2 were killed and dozens injured.
