I honestly wouldn't blame her for getting pissed. What Nagito said earlier was uncalled for, dude. But at least it would be nowhere near as bad compared to the absolute roasting he would get if that was Chiaki's mom he was talking to.

Pardon me, but why are we bringing Chaiki's mother into this?

Have you ever heard of a person who goes by the name of Harumi Nanami?

No, I have not? Is she highly famous or something? Because I know that Chiaki comes from a rich family, but I never understood how she reached that level of success at all. Care to elaborate on that fact?

Well, let's just say that in 1980, an infamous murder happened at the Takamatsu Junior High School in Toyko. It began like any other normal school day, but the homeroom teacher for Class 2-B, Mizuki Yumiko didn't show up for class that day.

S-So what happened to her? Did they ever find where she was?

Eventually, they did, just... not in the way everyone was expecting. She was found dismembered, with her body parts placed into separate trash bags near the school incinerator, most likely to dispose of the evidence as quickly as possible.

Oh my goodness...

The police were stumped on how to conduct the investigation, even when one of the bags was opened and discovered by two students. One of the students managed to piece together who exactly committed the murder and led the police to the killer, a disgruntled former student of Mizuki.

That quick?! I would've expected an investigation to take months to piece together, yet she solved that in just a few seconds!. How is that even conceivably possible?!

Trust me, I have no idea how she did it, but within a day after solving the murder case, Harumi became the police's best forensics investigator, despite being a woman. In fact, she's probably the main reason why the police force hasn't utterly collapsed on itself due to the political and societal backlash it's been getting since the '60s.

My underlying theory is that they're keeping her within the confines of law enforcement simply because of her unique and incredibly talented abilities as a forensics expert. After all, not many people can hold the claim of having solved and deduced 450 cases before in the span of four to five years.

HOW MANY?!

F-Four hundred and fifty?! B-But that's unrealistically impossible!!

Nope, it's entirely realistic and believable for someone like her to accomplish that. She even formed a crew of some of the most well-renowned, highly skilled, and accomplished members in the law enforcement world, consisting of the police commissioner's son, his best friend, a lawyer, and the heir to the Kirigiri Clan, under her leadership.

She's so well respected in fact that she even received two medals from not only the Prime Minister but also the Purple Heart from United States President Ronald Reagan himself, alongside Class 49, due to her contributions to fighting for the free world and her severe crackdown on narcotics and drug trafficking, despite her being from the Reserve Course.

You're joking, right? This can't be real. It can't! There's absolutely no possibility that one person managed to accomplish the record of 450 CASES in the span of a decade, but also got awarded two highly prestigious medals by the Prime Minister and by Ronald Regan of all people! And being from the Reserve Course no less!! I'm... speechless right now.

I mean, that's why they call her names like "The Terror Of Toyko" for a reason, I guess? But she's really an incredible person and kindhearted as well from what Chiaki described of her.

Now, I bring this all up due to this simple fact: With a reputation as infamous and highly feared among multiple crime syndicates and criminals the world over as Harumi, whilst still being a member of the Reserve Course, you would think somebody would learn how to give respect to talentless people coming from the Reserve Course, but Nagito unfortunately doesn't understand that.

So what you're basically saying is that Harumi is most likely going to absolutely murder Komaeda the moment he utters even a single sentence about his beliefs on talent and the Reserve Course to her, correct?

Yep! I don't think she'll resort to murder, as that isn't what it appears like from a distance as well as considering her position in law enforcement, but considering Komaeda's statements earlier, she's going to be less than pleased if she meets him in person. Picking a fight with someone as insecure as Hajime is already low for your reputation, but picking a brawl with someone who has incredibly close ties to the legendary Class 49?

Yeah, Nagito's basically screwed himself over at this point. There's no doubt about it, it's just a matter of time before he'll eventually get his comeuppance.

am i really the only one who thinks nanami looks kinda ugly in the new ep? idk his walk looked funny and the shading just. didnt feel like it did much for him. him snatching harumi was fun though, but that shot of him dragging harumi up really didnt do much for me visually :/ He didnt look bad per se but im not seeing the mind blowing attractiveness yall are and i feel like im missin something

Coming to Terms with Citrus

Before we get into this Wednesday’s topic, I need to put out a disclaimer so that we’re on the same page. What I am about to say is coming from a place that takes the story at face value. I am NOT good at this, and I will definitely get things wrong. So please,

Go NUTS in the comments...(No, really. Please share your thoughts after this. Help me know what I got wrong.)

I put off writing my thoughts on this particular series for many good reasons. For a start, I am but just a straight man and given that I’m about to judge a series about two lesbians....It doesn’t look like a good sign for me. But, seeing as how I have been joining several groups and observing comments towards this particular subject.

I feel like I can finally make a good statement as to what my thoughts are for this series while explaining a little deeper in regards to the audience this series has attracted. Let’s discuss...

- < Citrus > by Saburouta -

< Citrus >, if you didn't know. Is an infamous Yuri incest Manga that follows our first main character, Yuzu. (the blonde) whose mother just remarried to a man and said man has a daughter who is of the same age as Yuzu. Upon her first day of attending the new school that she was transferred to, Yuzu unknowingly ran into the student council president; Mei (the ravenhead) who to her shock, turns out to be her new stepsister.

As a lovely time of first night bonding over what’s it like to kiss someone. (He says sarcastically) They did...THIS.

Description: Mei getting on top of Yuzu and forcefully kissing her. See why I don't want to talk about this series now?

While this isn’t the only series that involves Yuri (Girl’s love) and Incest. It was my personal introduction to what the Anime community considers as “trashy fan-service shows” Given that the Anime ended with a cliffhanger. I decided to read the Manga to give it a chance of redemption.

Believing myself to have gone through heaven and hell over this very series. I wondered to myself. Despite it being “trash”, why can’t I look away from it? After joining several forums and interacting while observing the community. I think I’ve developed several theories.

- Just Cute Girls, Doing Cute Things -

A little archaic as a pointer but, its just the truth. Upon first impressions, the creation of Saburouta is just plain pretty. From the settings to the main characters, to the designs of the supporting roles like Matsuri, Harumi and Himeko. Even the one-off characters like Sara and Nina are just as pretty.

But at its core, < Citrus > is a very lackluster and fan-service series with little to no substance to the actions of certain characters with an all too vile display of invasive scenes and moments between certain characters. From Mei’s tendency to non-consensually attack Yuzu, to Matsuri getting all too close to both MCs on occasions. In summary, just a Gay old time!

For context, I read the series for a whole three days and while reading. I can’t help but feel that the drama feels hollow and the ending (trying not to bring up spoilers) was unearned. While I may have not struggled with questioning my preference, I do understand some of the reasons as to why Yuzu and Mei chose to keep their relationship hidden from their family and friends.

Chalking it up as just “being very close to my step-sister” Adding on, if the situation was a real-life incident. It would get very messy and awkward during family gatherings.

Several forums speculate that while Saburouta’s intent was to make a wholesome Yuri with incidental Incest. She had to make more “commercial” changes to ensure that the series sells. As an old marketing saying goes “sex just sells”

While that is based on purely speculation. Its not that strange of a theory. Romance in any shape or form is always exaggerated in media. (Just ask the heteronormative ones) Like it or not, by creating more raunchy scenes between the characters. < Citrus > managed to make bank and with the anime in the works while the manga is nearing the finale.

Uta was given the confidence to take the narrative deeper with a more liberating direction in < Citrus Plus >. Expanding on what happened in-between the several last chapters and removing the raunchy tendencies little by little. On the forum, several commentators recommended a stark contrast when compared to < Citrus > The critically acclaimed Yuri Manga; < Bloom Into You > by Nio Nakatani.

- A Modern Yuri Fight -

When discussing the more modern Yuri scene, < Citrus > is often compared to < Bloom Into You >. Which is not surprising since the respective Anime’s came out on the same year in 2018 under different seasons. (Citrus on Winter and Bloom Into You on Fall)

As a comparison, The relationship with the MCs; Touko and Yuu (the light pink haired girl) are far healthier and less invasive. The series is less fan-service and more about the characters discovering themselves and learning the meaning of love. To prevent myself from ranting, I highly recommend < Bloom Into You > to new audiences of the Yuri manga scene but for the sake of this post. Let’s just say while it may not be perfect, its just better.

As for the fans of both series, we are well aware as to why and how it is better. Instead of invasive fan-service incest, we have a cute one-year-older senior and junior relationship with friendly banters and teasing. As a bonus, we also have a rather complex and relatable character like Yuu. (Further expansion required)

Needless to say, I’m a far bigger fan of how unpreachy < Bloom Into You > was. Showcasing the romance itself as just simply...love. Here in lies our second problem. < Citrus > and < Bloom Into You > are two very different stories centered on just the fact that WE the audience, classify them as Yuri (Girl’s Love).

Like comparing apples to oranges, < Citrus > feels like something written for an audience that fetishizes same gendered relationships while < Bloom Into You > feels a lot more relatable and realistic to actual people who too, struggle with their preference. Pealing away the fetish aspect and making it about the internal turmoil's of a complicated character. As mentioned in an old post of mine;

Being queer in real life is complicated and is often met with prejudice and strong judgement. In some countries, you could even die just for being queer so, to see queer characters being represented in a certain media or to even watch a character learn to come to terms with their preference is a proud thing.

That being said, it still doesn’t answer the main question. What was the theory? Pretty characters, questionable motivations stacked with the issues of how the industry views romance in any form. It sounds like there is no salvage to this ship. For that, we will have to turn to Uta’s newest addition; < Citrus Plus >

- I Want to Love -

When joining the forums about the Yuri scene, I managed to stumble across this question to the followers and members of said community.

“Why is it difficult to be a straight person but liking same gendered relationships, even if it’s from a Manga?”

The question may sound like an odd Segway but to entertain the idea. I decided to read the comments to get an inkling as to what the discourse thinks. By pure observation, there is an issue of the audience hypersexualizing same gendered characters and relationships which speaking from experience, can warp our perception to the subject.

The problem with say, a straight male liking Yuri manga or Yuri media despite it being just a piece of media one prefers to consume. May come across as a viewer seeing what they consume as all that it is. A Fetish. While unintended and its no fault to someone like say, Saburouta. It is after all, a piece of public media. How the audience interprets it is up to them.

That being said, some of us just like warm, fuzzy, less angsty romance stories. I personally, am a hopeless romantic as mentioned in [The Thing With Shipping] But even I have moments where I fall into this tendency of shipping two female characters together, way too hard that it becomes very dangerous. At the same time, Even I have standards as to what makes a ship good.

< Citrus > was a tough spot for me personally because while it is a pretty looking Yuri. Its core plot and resolves are extremely questionable with hollow substance as to why I should support the ship itself. But, thanks to the addition of < Citrus Plus > The audience, (or the ones who stayed because they are completionist. cough* ME!) The relationship between Yuzu and Mei becomes a little bit more understanding. I still hold my initial comments the same as I did after catching up to < Citrus Plus> until I realized something through one picture.

Out of context, this is just a typical fluffy fanart to tug on the viewer’s heartstrings but when you are like me, someone who is invested in the series from the very beginning to its current state. You’ll recognize it more. The works of Saburouta IS IN FACT, an incest Yuri...but so much more.

Its about Mei finally being able to open up her heart to someone after being cold and distant for so long. Its Yuzu learning to come to terms with herself and the love she had for her step-sister and partner. Its Mei being able to find genuine comfort with Yuzu and vice versa.

Its about acceptance to one’s feelings while also being aware of the messed up situation that they’re in. Its the character’s respective turmoil being put to rest and them finally given peace with themselves after the various obstacles they had to go through. A quick PSA;

This post does NOT condone Incest or any blood related/ not blood related conoldle doodling.

For a messed up story, < Citrus > is perhaps similar to the likes of a < Domestic Girlfriend >. An all too fictional-but-could-be-real drama that just keeps getting more interesting and we can’t turn away from it. After struggling to find a proper statement as to why I liked and hated this series at the same time. I think I may have found my defense.

In the end of the day, for all the messed up moments they bring us. We just want to see them happy. I want to see them happy. What I've learned to come to terms with < Citrus > is that, just as how a good story can have messed up moments. A messed up story can also have some good moments. In fact, I liked some of the more tender moments Yuzu and Mei shared every once in a while. Yes, I am aware that there are stories out there with better representation.

I STILL feel the same as I did with the overall plot and I believe that the ending was still, heavily unearned, but this series truly was much less about the ending and more about the journey. The series < Citrus > has now become a household name for "Trashy fan-service Yuri" consumers will always have a strong opinion for which I will like and strongly critique, always.

The bad arc Mod Bubbles made, the one Anon is referring to, would be Oncoming Storm, generally considered to be the worst arc of the entire blog, when it was revealed that Kyoji was helping the people who kidnapped Mahiru and Hiyoko, and Umeko was blocking the Anons from letting the others know. Though Bubbles himself would give the title of Worst ASOOT Arc to Twisted Sister. Also, no writer of any kind is flawless. Everyone has their bad moments, even the pros. So don't get wrapped up in your own mistakes. Especially when you're just starting out

// I actually never reviewed or seen Twisted Sister before so I can't judge. I think I saw it once back before when I was on Tumblr and I thought it was an okay arc with a good story, although the idea of erasing Kanade's mind felt uncomfortable to me, even before I became a writer.//

Chisa hummed as she finished hanging the last garland from the doorway, finishing off the trim. Everything was exactly where it should be, decorations everywhere, the tree, the presents… and there were a lot of presents! She had a lot of people to buy for, after all! It had taken three nights between her and Kyousuke to wrap them all, though she did attribute part of that to the fact that Kyousuke was a total perfectionist and would spend twice as long on one gift than she did.

It had eventually taken until Juuzou came and assured him that he was in fact overthinking, and with the three of them combined they managed to finish without taking a whole week. Chisa wasn’t sure she would be able to take that long, anyway! Surely the children would have figured something out by then, and she was adamant that these kinds of things be a total surprise!

“… Chisa,” Kyousuke looked up at her from where he stood on ground level. Chisa herself was standing on the stepstool still, having finished her door trim. “Juuzou says we should start plating the food now, before the first guests arrive.”

“Ah! Of course!” She grinned and hopped down, unable to help the big grin that went across her face. “Do you think the kids want to help?”

Before she could even answer, a familiar smaller redhead came skipping into the living room. “Mom! Look!” She held up a wreath, which had been lovingly decorated with all kinds of little ornaments and tinsel. The most important contribution though were the little paper cutouts of their family, the six of them.

Chisa grinned. “Wow! That looks fantastic, Ayaka! Let’s put it up~” She took the wreath and hung it on the back of the front door. Once it was secured she lifted the girl up into a hug. “What an artist I have!”

“She gets it from you,” Kyousuke said with a faint smile. Chisa grinned in his direction.

“Let’s start setting up, shall we~?”

It wasn’t long before guests started arriving, and the festivities truly began. Chisa was grateful that their house was relatively big, though in hindsight maybe it would have been a better idea to ask someone like Hiyoko or Nagito to host, with their mansions. Then again, this kind of intimate atmosphere was better for this kind of party, wasn’t it?

The first ones to arrive were the Nanamis, of course. They arrived well before anyone else, enough time to help with preparations. Chisa gladly let Mikan help with some cleaning and the remainder of the cooking (she couldn’t keep Juuzou cooped up in the kitchen forever). She even showed her the wreath that Ayaka had made, though of course that led to lots of happy tears. Or at least, Chisa hoped they were happy.

Others started to trickle in, and soon enough Chisa had a full house on her hands. She was pretty sure an entire food tray alone was devoured entirely by Kagami… though she did see them feeding carrots to Ryouta, so maybe it wasn’t entirely their fault. She had to steer Peko away from the kitchen more than once, trying to reassure her that she really didn’t need any help and that Peko was a guest in her house. She wasn’t sure how she felt about Nagito bringing Kibou over, but at least the dog was well-behaved and she didn’t think anyone was allergic.

“Chisa!” She jumped at the sound of her name, but turned to see Juuzou beckoning her into the kitchen. Shaking off her initial surprise, she happily went in.

“Whatcha need, Juuzou?”

“I’ve got a problem.”

She blinked, tilting her head a little. “… A problem?”

He nodded and opened one of the cupboards. She knelt down a bit to look inside, and when she realized what was there she couldn’t help but giggle.

Inside the cupboards were two small purple-haired bodies, curled up around each other and snoring softly.

“How cute!”

“Chisa, I need to get to those pans if you want me to bake anything else.”

“But Juuzou, they look so peaceful!”

“Chisa…”

“Don’t worry about it~” She hopped up and ruffled his hair, stretching up on her toes to do so. “You shouldn’t let yourself be cooped up in here, anyway! Go have fun with Satou-chan.” She skipped out of the kitchen, off to see how everyone else was doing.

Hajime, Fuyuhiko, and Kazuichi were chatting over glasses of wine (or… was that orange juice? Did he bring his own orange juice to her party?), Nagito was sitting nearby with Izuru, Maki, and Kibou… Peko of course wasn’t far away from Fuyuhiko. Natsumi plopped down next to Nagito of all people; Chisa wondered when they got close. Satou was in the process of dragging Juuzou out of the kitchen to socialize (Chisa couldn’t help but grin a little at that). She was glad to see that Hisako-chan was no longer hovering around Kyousuke… she wasn’t sure what they were talking about but Kyousuke had that “I’m teaching you important life lessons” expression on. Hiyoko seemed to be bragging to whoever would listen about her perfect wife and daughter (said wife was more than a little flustered). She wasn’t entirely sure what was going on with Sonia, Akane, Nekomaru, Teruteru, and Gundam over by the snack table but she wasn’t entirely sure she would understand even if she asked.

She hummed and went down the hall, peeking into one of the reading rooms, and was unsurprised to find Mikan, Chiaki, Kumiko, Hikaru, Ryouta, and Chihiro in there. She wondered, if too many introverts chose the same hiding space would it no longer be a safe space for them?

“Enjoying the party~?” She asked, tilting her head with a big smile.

“A-Ah! Y-Yes, of course!”

“It’s lovely, sensei.” Chiaki gave a faint smile, squeezing Mikan’s hand gently. Chisa was glad to see that they weren’t too overwhelmed right now.

“Are you going to go check on the children?” Chihiro asked, looking up with a smile. Ryouta seemed like he wanted to know the answer too, so Chisa gave them both a grin.

“That’s my next stop!”

“Good… let us know how things are going.” She nodded, understanding. Kumiko and Hikaru seemed to be completely tuned out, Kumiko on her GameGirl and Hikaru leaning over to watch, so she skipped out to head towards the playroom where the other children were probably all hanging out.

“Nyooooooommmmmm!!”

Chisa paused in her step, and approximately three seconds later a pair of children ran right past her. “Ah… there goes Asuka-chan and Shinobu-chan…”

The next children to zoom past were Daisuke and Hisako, apparently Daisuke has convinced Hisako to ride on his back as he ran around after the two girls. She tossed a “be careful, Daisuke-kun!” after them, but she wasn’t entirely sure he heard them. But he was the big brother, so surely he would be responsible, right?

Once she was reasonably certain no more children were going to barrel her over, she peeked into the playroom. It seemed that Ibuki was content to spend time with the children, and she was currently reading some colorful-looking book with Mimi. Akihiko and Harumi were nearby, chatting with Iren and Kieran. She took a moment to admire Iren’s festive outfit—he really was kind of extravagant when it came to fashion!

“Everyone doing okay~?”

“Yup! Ibuki is doing super great! And Mimi-chan too!”

“… We’re doing all right,” was Akihiko’s contribution.

“Glad to hear it!” Chisa ducked out of the room and hummed, already starting to plan her next step.

“All right everyone! Gather around, I have gifts for you~”

“Ah… you didn’t have to get us anything, Yukizome…” Hajime blinked, rubbing his neck.

Chisa just gave him a grin. “Call me Chisa! And of course I did! You’re my precious students, after all!” Even after all these years, despite having multiple classes since then, she could never quite forget her first class.

“Here you go, Chisa.” Juuzou finished pushing out the large box she had set aside. “I still don’t know how you managed to put all these together…”

“Never question a wife’s methods~” She giggled and started opening it, revealing what was inside—a bunch of candy and sweets trays, one for each family who attended. The first one she pulled out was decorated with pink and purple ribbons, which she handed enthusiastically to Mikan.

“F-For us…?”

“Of course! I even made sure there’s some healthier options in there too~” She gave Mikan a knowing wink, patting her head as she started to cry again. She started dishing out trays to everyone else—some of them bigger or smaller of course depending on how many people were in the families. Once they were all passed out she sat back and enjoyed their reactions. Several of the children wanted brownies right now, the parents admiring her handiwork.

“… Thank you, sensei!” Nagito gave her a bright smile, kicking off a whirlwind of thank yous and compliments. In fact, Chisa started to feel a little overwhelmed, feeling her face heating up under all the attention. Once she started to recover though she returned the smile.

“You’re all very welcome! It’s my pleasure!”

“… Good job, Chisa,” came a quieter voice by her side, and she looked up to see Kyousuke smiling down at her. Something about that made her blush go twice as bright.

“Yeah, good job.” Juuzou joined in too, resting his chin on Kyousuke’s shoulder. Chisa couldn’t help but grin as she stood up and pulled the both of them into a hug.

“Happy holidays, everyone~”
